On this stormy night, you find shelter, but at what cost? Your time to see my portfolio piece and admire the stormy nature of my project, yay!! In this project, I made a simple and short level design project of the player navigating through a tiny forest on a stormy night who will then find a mysterious cabin to stay in.

This project was designed not to be the next game on the market, but to flex my level design skills with particles, and for the first time to use Tree Creator and wind zone to create trees and wind respectfully. The assets (including the fps controller and one of the trees) are mostly borrowed from the Unity asset store, except for the trees I created (which will be shown one by one later in the video).

WHAT I LEARNED:

· How effectively I can use the Tree Creator to create main roots, growth, leaf frequency and growth, textures, branches, LOD, how effective are they in the wind, size (including leaves), and crankiness of branches of trees

· About how to use the wind zone for the first time and how effective and complex it is to use to enable to blow the trees around like the real-life wind.

· How I can make small particles float around until they reset their starting position to play the particle again.

· How I can shape particles. E.g. the dust flying around and the rain particles falling respectfully.

· Rotating around skyboxes to fit in with the scenes better. · Using code to make a randomized range with an enumerator to flick the lightning (directional light) between 15- 20 seconds.

· How effective using flare lights can be used to get players' attention from a distance,

WHAT I IMPROVED:

· I improved on mixing different terrain textures with each other to make it seamless and blended together as possible.

· I managed to control how high and low the terrain is to distinguish which are hills/mountains and walkable areas.

· Getting a better hang with the lighting and post-fx respectfully.

· Snapping modular pieces such as planks and steel roofs to corners of the little house to reduce z-fighting visuals.

WHAT I COULD HAVE DONE BETTER?:

· For rain particles, I could have added a splash particle when the rainwater collides with the terrain to make it more realistic and alive instead of it going through the ground.

· Not all the trees look exactly what I call “natural” trees, some looked a bit randomized with branches and a little bit blobby, so I will need to practice with the Tree Creator in the future to get better realistic trees.

· I would need to be careful how many leaves and branches are attached to the trees, otherwise, it will increase the polycount in the scene and crash the game.

· I only used a minimum of post fx this time because I thought without the player having a flashlight or lamp posts around, the player would struggle to find their way around if the post fx is too dark. So next time I should have a flashlight or lamp posts for the player to navigate around and use more post fx to enable me to use more of my creative freedom of it.

OVERALL:

Not only was this something a little different and a good exercise to improve my level design skills including sculpting the terrain and creating particles, but to try out new things like using the tree creator to create trees and using the wind zone to control how much wind to blow trees. Next time I may need to practice on the terrain editor and tree creator more to create more unique trees and terrain or just simply create trees and land from modular sets instead all respectfully, but that would depend on the next game I will be making. Overall- good exercise to expand my level design toolbelt.

KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park - Ultimate Fan Super-edit Version (2023 Upgrade) from KENN NARDI on Vimeo.

Last summer, I rose to the challenge raised on a KISS message board of creating a fan edit of KMTPOTP/AOTP that attempted to make the film a little less "cheesy". I initially scoffed at the idea, but after a second thought I decided to take a stab at it.

What is this version:

The film is completely (nearly shot-by-shot) re-edited using virtually every frame (and bit of dialog) from both KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park and Attack of the Phantoms. The vast majority of the footage is taken from the Attack DVD in KISSOLOGY 2, which has been upscaled to 1920x1080 (HD). I have also kept the original ratio this time (which is a bit wider than the standard 16:9 format). Everything else comes from the best source of KMTPOTP I could find. No amount of color-correction, AI or filtering will ever match the Attack footage, short of an actual film transfer, but I've done my best to make it less distracting than it would be if I just dropped those shots in here and there.

I ultimately decided to remove all the non-film live sequences I had added to the Halloween version. This was comprised of Largo 77, the A2 promo film and various 8mm clips. I originally wanted to give it a bit more of a concert film feel, but decided it was too distracting and a bit much for the flow of the story. I DID however use not only the original film(s) live footage, but also most of the Valencia outtakes which actually were filmed for the movie. This means we get a short "Love Gun" sequence and a bit of "Firehouse" to give the fire-beathing context.

ALL of the music has been remixed for the live sequences (with tracks isolated and then remixed to match the film performances). Rather than studio lip-syncs of everything except for a very rough version of "ISYL" we have all live music for the concert sequences. "ISYL", "SIOL" and "LG" use remixes of the A2 versions, "RARAN" is from the LA Forum 77, with "Black Diamond" ending and "Firehouse" using remixes from Alive!. The intro/credit sequence uses a brand-new mix of "RARAN" I did using Double Platinum, DTK and Alive! which features the full arrangement including the Ace solo from Alive! to make a studio version of this version. Along with all of the original video from the film it also uses most of the Alive II promo footage. The ending credit sequence uses a remix that is comprised of drum tracks from DP and Alive! to create a new "studio" version with beefier guitars and live vocals. The footage used is Largo '77, various 8mm '77 clips, Land of Hype and Glory footage, etc.

Most of the background sound FX were also re-done using various samples and clips I grabbed from YouTube. With a couple exceptions, all of the fight sequences and other non-live scenes use various remixes I did from isolated tracks to create (mostly) instrumental versions of songs from Destroyer thru the '78 solo albums. As mentioned in previous posts, "Beth", for example, is a brand-new version I created using a finger-style guitar part combined with live vocals rather than the (acoustic) studio track that appears in the original films. "Rip and Destroy" uses a remix that uses "Alive! and the film's vocals, along with many more mistakes, feedback, etc to create what, to me, is a more realistic version of "Robot KISS" fit for the anger and boos it receives. And yes, I was tempted to use a "current KISS" backing track as a little inside joke but decided '70s KISS was a better choice. Other songs accompany various character and work as their "themes" (not lyrically necessarily). Sam and Melissa have "Easy Thing", Devereaux has "I Can't Stop the Rain", Gene has "Man of 1,000 Faces" and various versions of "Almost Human" accompany the robots throughout the film. I really did want to include WAY more KISS music than the original film, since music is a huge part of KISS. Rather than shoe-horn in solo tracks that didn't particularly fit the scenes (and especially after I removed the additional live sequences) I looked for creative ways to include a good sampling of (mostly) their '77-'78 era catalog. The soundtrack for this new edit includes (if only in part) these songs...

According to the previous dynamic image, this should be a mixture of two textures, and the method should be similar to the previous Rain Base Material. I make a hypothesis to use the two rain textures I previously used blend them with Panner animation and enable multiplication. Obtain the effect shown in the following figure.

The first step is to add Panner movement animation to the falling texture, and the texture starts to loop down. The operation here is the same as the previous study on rain stickers.

Next, convert the final effect into numerical values and connect them to the next Panner, which controls the animation effect of the second texture. The UV coordinates of the second Panner should be the same as the first one to maintain consistency in the effect.

Obtain the final effect as shown in the above figure. The rainwater still shows a partial falling effect. I am gradually inferring the developer's intention. I think adding Noise to the later nodes is also to break the effect of falling too quickly. By adjusting the parameters, we can obtain the display effect shown in the following figure.

To make the raindrops more realistic, a mixed node approach can be used. Copy the material nodes that were originally formed, and then multiply them with the data from the previous drop map on the second node to form a complex doubled blend data, increasing the complexity of the map. Use Max to select the maximum value of two texture data, and the final result is shown in Figure 3.

Lumion 9 feature spotlight: Real Skies and Atmospheric Rain and Snow

A combination of beautiful Real Skies, Sky Light 2 and atmospheric rain and snow heighten the “living” look of the environments surrounding your designs.

Location, location, location...

It may be an old, overused cliche but there’s definitely some truth to it in the architectural world. Buildings are inseparable from their locations, and when communicating your design to the outside world, making sure the viewer understands the design’s context is everything.

Something as simple as the look of the sky can act as an anchor, grounding you to the reality of your project’s environment. Weather such as rain and snow beautifully demonstrates how your design will endure through both climate and season.

With Lumion 9 Pro, achieving this “living environment” look is surprisingly easy with new features such as Real Skies (w/ Sky Light 2) and Atmospheric Rain and Snow.

In just a few clicks, you can give your design the strong, blue light of a clear, sunny day, or you can present a more dramatic look with heavy shadows as thick rain clouds roll in.

With the 39 new, pre-configured Real Skies effects in Lumion 9 Pro, you can instantly dress your render with a beautiful, realistic sky in Photo, Movie and 360 Panorama mode.

As you saw in the video, heightening the beauty of your scene with the Real Skies is likely one of the easier parts of creating your render. Below, we’ll go through the different sky categories and demonstrate a couple things you can do right away to customize your render’s look and get the ideal sky for your design.

There are 39 new Real Skies covering several different categories, including Cloudy, Evening, Morning, Overcast, Sunset and Clear.

And within each of the categories, you can find a number of different skies. The Real Skies possibilities are shown in the gif below.

In addition to the 39 Real Skies options, you can achieve an almost limitless variability by opening the effect and moving the sliders around. You can change the heading, the sky’s brightness and the overall scene brightness. You can even flip the sky for a different look.

While the Real Skies and Sky Light 2 have the most impact when applied to exteriors, this feature can also be highly effective when attentively applied to your interior renders.

The same is true for the new atmospheric rain and snow feature under the Precipitation effect in Lumion 9 Pro.*

The new atmospheric rain gives your structure a soothing, relaxing backdrop. The atmospheric snow reinforces the cozy, wintery environment that may be a crucial part of the building’s setting.

Applying the Atmospheric Rain and Snow

Here’s how to get the most out of the atmospheric rain and snow in the Photo and Video modes.

To start, click on the “FX” icon and simply go to the Weather and Climate category. Click on the Precipitation effect to add it to your effects stack. From here, click on the effect again to access its customization options. Here you will see a range of sliders, including Rain / Snow, precipitation phase, particles quantity, particles size, blocked by plants, blocking distance, extra fog addition and block bias.

To create an atmospheric, rainy look for your designs, make sure the Rain / Snow slider is positioned to the left (moving it to the right will transform your rain into snow).

To give your scene the look of a cozy, winter wonderland, you can simply shift the Rain / Snow slider to the right. The rain will change to snow, and you can customize the exact look of the falling snow and the snow on the ground by moving the effect’s sliders around.

You can easily change the look of the rain and snow on the ground, as well as the level of precipitation, by tuning the “phase” slider.

For instance, with an earlier phase (meaning the slider is tuned to the left), you can have rain and dry ground, as shown here:

At a later phase (moving the slider to the right), the rain has been falling for some time and has formed puddles on the ground, as shown here:

Additionally, if you want to change the size and amount of the individual raindrops or snowflakes, you can adjust the particles quantity and particles size sliders.

Also in Lumion 9, the rain and snow are blocked by buildings, overhanging objects and other objects that would block precipitation in real life. You can even adjust some of these settings with the blocking sliders.

*If you have Lumion 9 (not the Pro version), you will still have the Precipitation effect in photo, video and panorama mode; however, you won’t have the new atmospheric rain and snow updates.  

Living environments to deliver new levels of realism

To get the most impact from your 3D architectural renders, it can help to show the beauty of the location’s skies and then give an atmospheric perspective as your design stands in all sorts of weather.

Heavy snowfall all day: the deepest it’s been in a real long while. Supposedly it’s gonna continue coming down tomorrow, maybe even into the next day. I hope it continues for a while, although it probably won’t. I like it when it snows. It’s one of the few times when I feel alone, yet at peace. There’s this strange kind of thrumming melancholic hum that settles in over everything, blankets out all the other usual anxieties and palpitations, leaving only a sense of coldness: detachment without alienation. The utter absence of sensation, good or bad. It’s like a sadness devoid of pain.

Anyways, I finished up the camera FX for the sinkhole and spent the rest of the day touching up the rain. I started by revisiting the audio, which turned out to be much quieter than I remember. I went back to some recordings I made over the summer and layered into the original second, denser rain track. I think it sounds a lot better now: there’s a greater sense of impact upon vegetation especially, which was pretty lacking before in retrospect.

I also re-implemented the splash decals on the ground surface, and significantly increased the amount to “realistic” quantities, depending on the number of droplets currently active in the room. As part of this process, I revisited all of the existing cells and mapped out no-rain-splash regions in all of the relevant ones. I had to turn down the effect pretty substantially for certain rooms -- currently, the outpost and the generic forest areas are most impacted -- so hopefully I can figure out a more elegant solution than just spawning in hundreds of objects every step. Either way though, even if I can’t find a better solution, it probably won’t matter that much: it looks okay as is.

Lastly, I added a new VFX overlay for rain, which features a pseudo-dynamic lens effect that simulates water droplets accumulating on the screen. It ended up looking a lot better than I expected. I’m currently investigating the possibility of implementing some kind of basic system that reduces visibility over time when it’s raining, forcing the player to manually direct Avery to wipe away rain in her eyes every few moments. I think that would significantly deter players from spending too much time out in the rain directly (on top of the existing dirtiness accumulation), but I have to figure out how to implement in a way that makes sense visually first. Hopefully I can get that in by tomorrow...

Creating a Rainy Effect at Night

My plan is to add a rain effect to the final promotional video and present it in the later editing. There are many ways to achieve the effect of rain, and I will use blueprints that consider adding rain and stickers on the water's surface to achieve the effect.

I previously studied rain stickers and after testing, the effect can still achieve the expected effect. However, the author has made a deeper level effect on rain stickers, achieving different effects in the X, Y, and Z directions.

As shown in the figure, different effects can be seen on the three sides of the cube, as it is composed of three different stickers pieced together. 、

This display effect is very realistic. In the X and Y directions, relative effects can be achieved by rotating the decal, but different effects can be achieved in the Z-axis direction. Water droplets may remain on the surface and have a tendency to bounce up. This effect can be compared with a reference to real rainwater falling on the ground.

On rainy roads at night, reflections are generated under the illumination of lights, but the road surface is not so smooth, and the resulting reflections are relatively blurry. I think the reflection will be stronger on smooth roads and weaker on rough roads. I think one of the difficulties is how the bubbles and splashes formed by rainwater on the Z-axis surface are displayed in the stickers. Due to time constraints, I referenced this Dynamic Rain blueprint. It can quickly create the effect of rain.

I do agree with the point above, and I think it’s an astute observation.  Too Much Detail or hyper-realism is just as likely to set off our uncanny-valley senses as anything else.

But I do have to point out that in the scene above, the T-Rex is not CGI.  That’s a life-sized animatronic.  They built two of them, specifically for this sequence (though used them in others), and there are a lot of great stories online about all the trouble they had with them. (Particularly in this scene, because of the rain, and the T-Rex was partly made of a foam that absorbed the water, and... yeah.)

So in some cases, in “Jurassic Park”, the reason the FX look so great is that they aren’t CGI.  I mean, yes, early CGI *was* used in that movie, and it does actually still hold up pretty well!  But some of the “realistic” stuff was actually real (in the sense of being a physical object and an example of amazing craftsmanship).  This goes for the velociraptors, too, which in some instances were people in suits. 

The T Rex first appearance in Jurassic Park.
