Day 5: Nature

Summary: Over the past few years, Elain has learned to grow many types of plants. When Lucien is sick in bed, Elain can't help but use her growing expertise to tend to him.

AN: Starting this fine Thursday off with an Elucien drabble. Be aware, I have never written a sickfic, even though I posted Tuesday, this is technically the first Elucien thing I wrote, and my knowledge of herbal remedies comes from Google. In short, I hope this doesn't suck.

Elain had been a faerie for nearly five years now. If there was one thing she had learned in that time, it’s that very little separated fae males from human men, when it came down to it. In other words, no matter what race a male may be, he became an absolute toddler when he fell ill. 

Lucien was no exception to nature’s flaws.

He had been working hard lately, juggling his duties to Night and the human lands as well as assisting Spring’s recovery. Its High Lord had finally come to accept reality in the past few months. The pieces of his court were starting to mend, albeit slowly. And Lucien for whatever reason put himself in the middle of it all. And she could feel the toll it took with five courts between them.

And when he returned to Night… that bond between them was a curse. At least she wanted to call it that. But after five years her mentality had begun to shift. Perhaps it was how disgustingly happy her sisters seemed with Cassian and Rhys. Perhaps it was some faerie breeding instinct, as Feyre had once admitted when Elain dared ask what was expected of her when it came to the bond. If she was required to accept Lucien. Or perhaps it was something she was entirely too afraid to admit. Lucien was courteous to her wishes, charming when they did speak on occasion, respectful to her and every other female she’d seen him near—which was more than she could say of most human men.

So that was why with him near and unwell she felt the need to… help.

It was just a common cold of course. Nothing he should be acting as if he was dying over. But the strain of his travels and work had weakened his body and the “male bonding”, also known as Feyre pushing Rhys and his brothers to invite Lucien to their annual snowball fight so relationships could be mending from all sides, had been the catalyst. Even fae bodies needed time to recuperate and Lucien hadn’t been respecting his health enough.

She stood from her seat, leaving her book on the bench to head down to the kitchen where she knew Nuala was working. Having learned the cultures of the fae, Elain knew better than to cook anything herself, but she was sure Nuala would help her with that much.

“Elain,” the wraith greeted her. “Can I get you anything?”

“I thought you might help me prepare something for Lucien. A broth, perhaps.”

Nuala gave a hint of a smile. “Of course.” Without further comment, she set to work over the stove, leaving Elain to her own business. In her research and experimentation over the past few years, Elain had learned quite a bit about growing and preserving medicinal herbs. The aerial portion of the echinacea was beneficial in curing common ailments such as this, strengthening the immune system among other things. A tea would be just fine.

A few moments later she had everything plated and gathered on a tray, easy enough to carry to the room Lucien was keeping upstairs. Adjusting the tray against her hip, she gave a soft knock on his door. “Come in.” The second she stepped into the room his attention zeroed in on the broth and tea. “Elain—”

“All I touched was the herb for the tea.”

His posture eased and he set his book aside, nose scrunching a bit. “Herb?”

“Echinacea,” she confirmed, amused by his skepticism for traditional medicine. “Your immune system was weakened by stress and overexertion. Human medicine may seem simple compared to fancy healing magic, but it still gets the job done.” She set the tray in his lap with a smile. “So, broth and herbal tea for you. I hope you feel better soon.”

“Wait,” he called as she turned for the door. She cocked her head. “I’m not contagious at this point if you’d like to stay? Talk for a while. Your sister feels bad for sending me out in the cold and sent a heap of books this morning, if you’d prefer silence.” 

She nodded, warily settling in the chair beside the bed. He passed her one of the books from his bedside table. “Feyre told me once that all the old fables and tales have been washed from human history. Care to read a few?”

Sitting in silence once more, Elain began to read, for the first time in a long time feeling at peace.

I've read so many Elucien fanfics by now that I've lost count of them at this point. Like... I be laying in my bed at night and I remember a part of a certain fic that I read and that I REEEALLY liked and I start trying to figure out in which fic this happened but in the process all the fics start to get jumbled up in my brain and I no longer know if that said thing/scene/plotline happened in that 12 chapter fic that I read a month ago, or in that 34 chapter one that I read three months ago... OOOR now that we're on it hmmm... maybe it's in that oneshot that I read last week. OH GOD AAAAAA 😭🤦🏽‍♀️

I've been in a major writing slump for a couple of weeks. Like, I've only been able to force out 3 or 4 paragraphs a day. It wasn't fun anymore. I felt like everything I wrote was wrong and would have to be fixed anyway. I felt like nobody would ever want to read it even if I fixed it, so why try? I talked to my partner about it, and he said I need to stop spending my writing time worrying about things in the real world like editing and critics, and just live in the world of my story.

Logically I know that the most important rules of writing are that your first draft doesn't have to be perfect, and don't write with your critics in mind. Those things are important to remember because it's so easy to slip into that destructive mindset. I sat down to write today and finally churned out the rest of the chapter I've been struggling with for days now, and it was fun.

You only get to ride the high of your first draft once. Your first draft is just for you to live in your world without worrying about the details. Don't ruin that joy with perfectionism and self criticism.

Hello everyone, I’ve been on hiatus dealing with the real world. However, I have started chapter five and made the mood board for it. I also have events and ideas for future chapters.

hi guys I’ve had this idea in my head recently of an aftg purple heartsAU. I thought of it after listening to the purple hearts soundtrack and some of the lyrics were just sooooo andreil coded. But the problem is although I’ve read genuinely a million fanfics in my life I’ve never written one so itll be a challenge

Boy, this is one of THE things that will make me drop a fic like a hot skillet almost every single time. I don't ask that you have 100 percent accuracy with lingo, and if you're writing it that way on purpose, because Aragorn's "kinda-sorta" can work with a comedy that's not pretending to care about accuracy or if it's done one (1) time, but if in the middle of a dead serious adventure story not so much. And more often than not, it's an issue with learning how to write voice, since more often than not, when a writer struggles with character voice this way they struggle with Same Voice Syndrome as well. Maybe their specific style measures out to write Character A but because they haven't quite learned how to differentiate voice, all the characters end up sending like Character A. Like, there's a trick to it absolutely, and unless you've got an uncanny ear, it's a skill that needs to be honed like any other, and I absolutely understand how common it is and why. Still drives me absolutely nuts, though.

A young fae no older then five got into night raven campus and has being running amok. obviously, you: the defenseless, Magic-less human with no knowledge of fae or even how some of this basics of this world work, you were the schools best bet against this ‘threat.’ And so, your oh so kind instructor pushed this task onto you and left.

Thankfully, you were well equipped with a grumpy cat-weasel who is so glad to help and definitely did not try and run away.

This threat was a real threat!

You had learnt that after you had stumbled upon the frozen dinning hall; all of this was from the baby fae! What on Earth were you suppose to even do once you caught the child!

Grim grumbled from your shoulder, just then a ball of fire came hurtling towards the two of you!

“Sorry!” A no name student called out…

“We should leave… and fast.” You said as you turned to leave in a hurry. You tripped on the ice almost tripped on the ice while you left.

“Are you mad at me?” He looked up at you with teary eyes.

“Why would I be mad at you?” You asked the small boy curiously, blinking at him a big confused at the question. His large electric green puppy eyes weren’t exactly helping you stand strong and not coddle him either.

“Because I made the rooms a mess…” he rubbed his large cheeks free from stray tears. Not that he was any good at it either, you just shook your head and kneeled to the floor, wiping them away for him.

Something about this boy made you wanted to care for him and protect him- he was just do cute. “Nonesense, you were scared. A little mess is fine as long as you weren’t hurt.” When you looked at him you felt something akin to cuteness aggression. This little fae was adorable! If Crowley didn’t find his parents you’d take him in!

Ignore how poorly you yourself lived in ramshackle! And how much of your food was canned tuna because Grim insisted on it over actual food.

The boy nodded, cuddling into your side like a small cuddly cat.

Children were a handful.
