// woww look at u anon ur so edgy and cool for sending me this. anyway have a menhera jrh rui board thank u for the idea 🫶
// genuinely tho this is kind of a really fucking rude thing to send because I can tell u do not fucking know what menhera means and idk I dont appreciate the misunderstanding of that term being thrown at me as a person with mental illness!! over an rp blog that has several warnings about heavy angst. almost like its purpose is for fun and for coping. who woulda thunk it.
// board sources under cut (note: some colors are edited, not to the point of unrecognizability but let it be known)
fanart: this is the artist as far as I can tell, though it seems they've taken this specific piece down.

I thought you read all of Homestuck? Sorry this is not an accusation or anything, I just swear that I remember you saying that... Memory is weird lol. And it's not like I have read it or planning to do so anytime soon, but yea
went on a bit of a rant here oops
i have read all of homestuck and it sucks. sometimes you become older than 14 and understand more about the world and realize this thing you used to think was cool actually sucks in a lot of ways. to be fair though, i did also think parts of it were shit when i was 14, so like. yknow. there were also parts i didn't understand before which i now understand, which makes me hate them, cuz they sucked. mostly the ableism and racism. there was other stuff but i refuse to re-learn anything about homestuck so I guess my other complaints will fade away as i live a life free of homestuck.
coming back to finish it when it ended was a slog but i couldn't stand the idea that I'd read most of this really long thing and had tapped out near the end.
the fans of it can also be a pretty mixed bag. what annoys me isnt normal fandom cringe stuff, but rather that a lot of them don't seem to be able to disconnect homestuck with the common tropes homestuck is pulling from. sometimes it's like homestuck is the first and only piece of literature they've ever actually engaged with meaningfully so they go into other stories and go "this is just like homestuck" because homestuck is so big it's got tropes from fucking everywhere.
someone once called Maureno a Lusus cuz she's a big animal who takes care of a kid, as if being raised by a magic animal isn't one of the most classic tropes out there common in mythology all over the world. it'd be like if every time i saw a mentor and their charge i was like "omg this is literally eda clawthorne" regardless of context or if the dynamic was the same at all. it's funny a few times but after a while it's just obnoxious. at least it is to me.
i'm biased tho since i hate homestuck, i don't usually care about people saying "this is just like my blorbo" about literally anything, ever, but for homestuck it's just slightly annoying. cuz i don't like it.
that being said i have been known to reblog homestuck art from time to time. cuz it's good art. and i don't begrudge people for liking homestuck, i used to like it too.
ALSO I'mma be real that post I made before was a jokey joke. like, drawing the characters as black is some of my favorite fanart. it won't make me enjoy homestuck again but it WILL make me appreciate the black artists who put so much time and thought into their fantastic designs.

Attention TW Fandom
Okay so I’m to this to actually lose it cuz I’ve been tumbling over a ridiculous amount of reposters on Wattpad. Like, whole books filled with reposted and stolen pictures and I just. have. enough.
Here’s what I found until now:

(why so many spanish folks tho)
Seriously, I’m so exhausted just looking at this. Most of them have said “credit the authors/artists, they’re not mine and I don’t want problem” and I just want to say no. Stop. Stop thinking what you’re doing is okay and you’re actually being cool because you said that dumb excuse. Stating this won’t give any credit to the artists, you’re just proving to everyone how lazy you actually are by not making any effort into giving their names. You don’t know who drew this ? No problem ! Go make a reverse image search on the internet and look who did it, nothing simpler than that. But even if you even did the effort to do it, we’re still not done with you. Reposting a picture, a piece of writing or anything means posting it a second time on either the same social network or another, and if you’re not the owner of the item then you’re being illegal. Because you have stolen someone else’s work and claimed it as yours, wether you like it or not. So everytime I read “that picture isn’t mine but whoever did this’”, it’s. just. bullshit. Because all the fame this picture will earn will only go to them. People won’t magically know which artist made this or that drawing, and they won’t take them into consideration. For real, they’re being so direspectful to the whole community of artists, this is insane. Those artists work super hard to share their artworks with everyone and in the end, all the fame and acknowledgement they deserve to get will go to people who actually just don’t give a damn shit to them and just want their own recognition without making an effort. I think people really don’t see how disappointing and depressing it is for them and how it basically destroy their motivation to keep going, otherwise we won’t get those cases of reposting.
I don’t say it’s bad if you want to be famous, even if you don’t have the talent or the means to make your own drawings (or anything else) and post them. But find another way to reach your goal rather than by stealing others’ artworks. Because yes, some will like the content you “produce”, but others will know you deserve none of this fame and you’re just a thief.
To everyone reading this, if you see someone reposting someone else’s artwork(s), don’t stay here saying nothing ! But at the contrary go talk to that person and convince them (or at least have a talk with them) to take them down! I know it’s difficult to talk with a stranger, especially in this case because I feel like I’m seeking for fight to people who have asked for nothing. But otherwise, you’re just being as bad as the reposters since you’re aware of what they’re doing, you know it’s wrong, but you still don’t do anything.
I don’t know if in the end people will care about this, but I’m just so exhausted. There have been multiple case of reposts lately and I feel like not enough people pay attention to this and actually take action. Appreciating some arts is good, but never ever forget there’s someone behind it.
Edit: I add more names to the list as I keep findind them. Also, some of them are not only reposting fanarts but also the characters’ drafts from the Twisted Wonderland Artbook. I’ve already sent messages to take them down but seriously, they really aren’t aware of the troubles and the issues they might get... We’re talking about copyright issues here (+spoilers for those who don’t want to see its content), Disney and Yana Toboso themselves could take them to court if they happen to see it.

I don’t watch anime, like with the exception Yuri on Ice once/ being in the room when it’s on, I never have.
So anyways I started My Hero Academia solely because I saw some dope fanart for characters and was like “okay I’ma try it.”
I have no clue what it’s about but here are my reactions: (will add to this in reblog was I go)
This green haired kid makes me sad- stupid foot bone
Wow mom not cool
Eww the blonde kid is an asshole
How many names do they all have?!
Is that the captain America guy? He looks like such a tweaker
Oooooooooo secret time

Green goo monster is real wack
SECRET POWER MONTAGE
Pollution is shitty, pick up your trash fools
HE EATS A HAIR. ohhhhhh this feels very Ed Gein
Go little green haired twink gooooo
Oh sheiiiiiit he is like not doing great
I don’t like the magic belly button idk why but it freaks me out
Metal calves is a little much. Someone give that boy a sedative
Oh shit. On NOOOOOOO
Also metal calf’s with the look and run- what a duck move
Save the nice mouse girl!!!!
Oh crap sauce he broke his whole shit! Like floppy legs and everything
He has to get in tho bc like that’s the whole point of being a main character THEY BETTER LET HIM IN AJAKAJSKAJAKA
HE HAS BEEN SQUEEZING HIS GRIPPIES FOR LIKE A YEAR GIVE HIM HIS ACCEPTANCE MOTHER FUCKERS HE AMA ✨pure✨
Yo this teacher just rolling up looking high as shit in a sleeping bag is a whole ass mood™️ like same bro. If I could I’d live in a sleeping bag
that scarf is chill
Sirius Blck vibes for no reason
Wooooooooooab expelled?! He might be less cool than I thought
Oooof this is painful, like Izuku is so sweaty all the time but also like much smol bean. Feel deep need to protect
Still really like this Bakugou dude- idk why. Maybe it’s the damage 🤣
All Might out here flexing for 3hrs a day with the muscles but like what does he do for his other classes? Does he not have any
Diggin the costumes
Except why he look like the energized bunny tho. It’s supes cute his mom made it but also
Seriously Bakugou looks legit as fuck
What’s up with that half and half hair kid I’ve seen in all the art? He looks like someone glued cotton puffs to his body. I don’t like this outfit
How is anyone this optimistic?
Of COURSE they have to fight each other bc plot
Woah man, I’m like into grenade hands but this seems harsh
DO NOT SHOOT THE BOY YOU CLEARLY HAVE MIXED FEELINGS FOR ITS RUDE
holy FUCK
Toasty handz done lost his fucking shit
That attack tho was clutch with the timing
Half and half hair guy- like I literally watched this show bc someone made cool art of you and you’ve said one sentence
But you still have potential
When you ditch the marshmallow outfit also what’s your power quirk thingy
Also this bird faced dude and frog girl I’m kinda confused by
Woooooah metal calf’s taking this real serious™️ and that’s on type A personality shit
Running running running
I feel like team hero would be all like that but one of them is barfing rainbows and little Izuku is straight up *le dead*
Yo, the nurse lady with the kisses is gon get so tired of his ass
Me @my partner in the other room “DOES HE EVER STOP BREAKING SHIT OR IS HE A ONE HIT WONDER FOREVER?!”
Apparently it takes ✨patience✨ he got swole In like one episode and now? Like 8 broken bones
How am I on episode 8?
This theme music was annoying but now I’m dancing in my room because okay then
shoot spicy hands is in trouble- like idk why I like him? Is it because I like toxic problem children with deep seeded issues?
And also why does he feel like he is secretly not with the straight
Is everyone going to be straight? The art I saw promised the gay- it’s why I’m here
Okay- Momo whoever you are: nice boobs but that BRAIN THO

Hey!! Your art is awesome :) Where did you learn to draw? Did you go to school or are you self taught?
Hello!! Thank you so much!! :D
It's a bit of both really, I mean I studied art at gcse and A level (which I guess is basically the UK equivalent of us high school level?? Idk how to describe it since school systems are different in every country lol) but I've not studied it at university level or like a proper private art school kind of place or anything.
But also, and I this is gonna sound cliché or whatever, I guess I've been drawing since I was little so aside from school lessons I've had many years of practice of just kinda figuring stuff out for myself basically.
(LOL and I would also say that sometimes school art lessons weren't always that useful, especially for a couple of years when we had rly bad teachers lmao. We did some stuff that was beneficial like life drawing classes and such but in my experience so much of our time was spent writing a load of fake pretentious bullshit instead of actually being taught how to draw LMAO but that's just my feeling...I could write more abt the way art is taught but I won't xD)
Right now I'm not studying anywhere, so I'm working on getting better at drawing by myself. I only really post my fanart on this blog but sometimes I do other stuff like exercises and anatomy studies that I don't post, which are helpful,, maybe since I'm already waffling I'll mention a few things I find useful to do in case it's if interest to you or anyone else? Under the cut tho, since this is getting long LOL
Observational studies/drawing from life is something that's very useful I find; just in terms of generally training yourself to look at something and try to represent it accurately and learning more about what things, textures, shadows, etc actually look like. Lately I often take a sketchbook out with me and do things like sketches of people or buildings or studies of plants, flowers etc. None of them are masterpieces, but it's just the activity in itself that's fun. Sketching people or animals forces you to be quick, because you don't know when they might move positions or leave or whatever, and being able to quickly and confidently get down the basic lines and forms of something is a good skill to have and to practice.
I also enjoy human anatomy and figure drawing so I'm trying to get better at that. Anatomy is a huge subject and it's too much sometimes to get hung up on trying to learn all the bones and muscles; a while back I got myself a textbook and found videos with that object in mind, but eh. I realised it's kind of a little ambitious when there are still so many things abt drawing in general I still don't know how to do, so I'm going to leave properly teaching myself detailed anatomy until later. Running before you can walk kind of thing, maybe.
That said though, doing a few studies now and then is still very useful, just learning a bit at a time and gradually getting used to remembering certain aspects about drawing the human body is progress enough.
In school, life drawing classes were pretty useful but I don't have access to any rn sadly. However, and this is not a #spon or anything jfjffj it's just what I do, I like this website called line of action which has photo references for artists to use; obviously there are countless sites like it but I like this one because it provides you with a timer tool kind of thing, so you can set it to 'class mode' and it will give you images to draw from in stages of 30 second sketches, then moving to a minute, then longer 5-10 minute studies and so on.
Even if you don't know shit about muscles and whatever, just observing the human figure from the outside (via images on the Internet if you understandably do not have access to real humans to pose for you lmao) and drawing it a bunch of times is still beneficial. The other I day I realised that ab muscles were confusing to me, so I literally just googled male abs and copied from a few pictures, just noting how they look, what basic shapes to remember etc.
Another good exercise that I haven't done for a while actually is to do some continuous line drawing, which means drawing something without taking your pen off the paper. For a subject you can use something/someone from life or just a picture on your computer or whatever, but basically just focus on keeping your pen/pencil on the page without lifting it, it's really useful in building up, like, confidence in your line work I guess, and it can look pretty cool actually, because it makes this kind of squiggly effect.
I'm just answering this on mobile right now and don't have time to post any pictures, but I'm thinking I could always post some of my studies and practice work now and then. Some of them will be messy LOL but I guess it might be a good thing to show this kind of stuff instead of finished, polished pieces all the time idk?
Anyway this got long and you didn't rly ask for it sorry chjfnfkf but thank you so much for the ask!!! Hope you're having a good day :-) ❤️
#asks#ask and ye shall receive unprompted blah blah blah ing from lisette#lemme know if any of this was interesting or if anyone wants me to elaborate on something

So I would love to progress on my art and try comics any tips? ÙwÚ
Hi! I’m so sorry about the late reply. D: I hope you don’t mind if I take this opportunity to address all the anon messages about how we can improve as artists.
I have a tough time answering this question because there is so much I need to learn. I’m super flattered that some of you feel that my art is good enough to ask me for tips, first of all!! So thank you, guys.
It’s a struggle because I only recently started taking up art again. So I’ve forgotten a lot of the things. So I’m probably not the best person to ask about this.
I used to draw all the time as a kid, but after high school, I stopped drawing. I stopped drawing for almost a decade, pretty much. I really regret it. I feel like I could have come such a long way if I did keep going. My parents really discouraged me from pursuing art, even just as a hobby, too. Even when I left home (I’m back now tho), my ex-spouse, greatly discouraged me from doing art too. I mean, “proper” art. They told me my art wasn’t “real art” because it’s not studio art, it’s “sellout” art, like anime/cartoons/fanart. I had even worse self-esteem as I do now, and I listened to them and gave up. I convinced myself I hated drawing.
Please don’t deny yourself things that make you feel engaged and connected. If drawing makes you feel good, if it makes you not realize how much time has passed and makes you feel like you’re accomplishing things, even little by little, please don’t stop. Even if you suffer from depression and feel like things like this are pointless, remember that just doing things in general will help you. Drawing is an awesome way to get into the flow state. To me personally, it’s almost like a meditative state and I find it helpful in dealing with chronic pain and mental health issues.
Anyways, I’ll try to compile some advice sort of things.
ART IN GENERAL
1. Draw what you enjoy! I think the most important thing is to draw what you like. It’s okay if it’s “dumb stuff”. Draw your favorite characters or pairings from your favorite tv shows if that tickles your fancy! You’re much more likely to be spending more time drawing if you’re drawing stuff you like. And as long as you’re drawing, you’re improving. (But still, challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone!)
Especially for those of you who are planning to pursue art as a career, it’s essential that you don’t view practicing art as a chore.
2. Draw from life. If you really want to take your art to the next level, drawing from life is vital! I think many of us have come across artists who are just amazing, but there are things that look a little “off”. For example, the anatomy doesn’t look quite right, or the perspective is a little wonky. Things like that can be a tell that they’ve learned to draw from other people’s art rather than from life. Or just haven’t practiced the basics enough. (My art isn’t amazing or anything close to that lmao, but it definitely suffers from this. I need lots of life drawing practice.)
There is nothing wrong with learning from your favorite artists, but to really train your “artist’s eye”, you need to strip away all the stylistic choices and go back to the basics. Training that Eye is one of the most crucial things you could do as an artist.
Just take a piece of paper, a pencil and start drawing what you see. If you can, take figure drawing classes at your local community college, or draw the animals you see at the zoo. Sit on a bench and draw the scenery in front of you. Over time, you’ll start to recognize common patterns, simplify/think of things in terms of lines and shapes.
If you can’t afford a class or have the ability to go outside easily, drawing from photographs can be the next best thing. (See the Resources below for an online figure drawing tool.) I’m not experienced enough to definitively say why this isn’t the #1 idea, but from what I hear, there are things that you’ll miss out on, such as subtle shifts in shadows, colors, and other things that will happen from small movements in pose changes, a cloud moving, or whatever else. A different “feel”, if you will.
With the digital art boom, a lot of artists are learning how to do cool digital effects and fancy things, but forgoing basic anatomy, perspective, shading, etc. Which is all fine if you’re just having fun, but isn’t the best idea if you’re really serious about improving. Practice the fundamentals!
(If you have been dreaming about CalArts at one point like I did when I was in high school, one advice I came across from everyone who went there was to draw from life. All the time. It’s not an answer I expected from people who draw funny looking characters all day. You mean all these people who draw such simplified cartoon people and animals can actually draw like masters? Perfectly rendered bowls of fruit? I didn’t realize how much work goes into animating simple characters.)
3. Put in the time.
It’s really easy to get suckered into just watching “how to improve” videos all day and thinking about improving. Watching how other artists work is an important learning tool, but you’ll never actually make progress if you aren’t practicing.
Sometimes, the best thing to do is to not think about it. Just do it.
It’s like when I’m spending a whole lotta time thinking about getting physically fit than just, you know.. just doing it. “Tomorrow for sure.”
It may seem like it’s worthless, but doing those lame 5 push-ups a day instead of the 20-minute workout you wanted to put in, is better than nothing at all. You are making progress, no matter how small it may seem.
Make it a habit to practice every day. That way, you don’t even hesitate. It’s as automatic as brushing your teeth.
All the artists you see who have fantastic, awe-inspiring art may seem like Unreachable Gods sometimes, but those artists didn’t just pull that out of their ass one day. They put in hours and hours and hours of work. Let’s not disrespect other artists by ignoring that and chalking it up to “talent”. No one is born with an innate ability to draw. WE can get there too if we practice!
I want to get good enough to draw the things I have in my head one day!
Some resources that may be helpful:
Draw a Box - This is a site for free lessons for absolute beginners. Look under “Lessons” to learn. The creator of the site is the mod for r/ArtFundamentals. You can post your work there to get critiqued.
Check out Proko’s videos on gesture drawing, art fundamentals, etc. Daily routines of successful artists.
Use this site to practice figure drawing, gesture drawing - Set aside some time to practice drawing people and animals every day. Start trying to see things as lines, shapes, and go big. Don’t get too caught up in the details, and tiny drawings. Learning to draw fast (not draw FAST as in speed, but as in capture the gesture in a post, the “feel” of the movement) will force you to do this more, and with more experience, make your figures less stiff looking.
And it’s okay if you’re aren’t good at it. You’ll make loads and loads of shit drawings until you can get decent.
I’m most definitely in this stage right now, trying to train my Artist’s Eye. As in, I can’t just draw a figure from memory. I don’t really know what goes where without a reference, or how they move, etc. You can tell by how stiff my drawings look.
Lulusketches How to Improve video - She has similar advice, but her point about looking at “Art of” books something I have come across from multiple professional artists; Her advice on worrying about finding your own “style” is really good too. Do challenges like she said!
Her playlist of art tutorials & advice is great. They’re short and sweet. Her beginner digital art tutorial got me started on digital art (the one with Ginny Weasley).
Not free ($30 a month), but these online Schoolism classes look helpful. It’s run by Bobbie Chiu. I saw some great reviews and I want to try them someday. They’re taught by artists in the animation/film industry. But you gotta have a basic grasp on digital art/photoshop for many of the classes, I think? I’m not 100% sure. They’re pre-recorded video lessons.
You can pay more for feedback from the teachers, but you can also just use it as a self-learning guide.
This drawing faces from any angle video was pretty helpful for me. The artist has loads of other tutorials.
COMICS
I don’t feel qualified enough to give much advice on comics. I mean, I don’t even draw the lines for the boxes, haha.. However, these comic books are basically required reading for some courses:
Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics & Making Comics.
I can’t remember which one it is that I read, I think it was Making Comics? But wow, if I remember correctly, it was FULL of really useful things about how to make effective comics. I lost the book while moving years ago, but it was FANTASTIC learning material. I loved every panel of it.
He talks about everything from perspective, placement of characters, speech bubbles, how big panels should be, etc.
If you can afford it, get a used one and start reading! Even if you don’t want to make comics just yet, it’s super interesting.

heyy!! i really like your work and think you're SUPER MEGA cool, and hope you get REALLY good at animating!! drawing is the first step, so making it move is the next haha. (once i save enough for a tablet i'll practice a lot!!) but i have a question: how do you improve as an artist? do you actively seek out critique or does it come with time and sub-conscious decisions to not do the bad thing anymore? what did you do? love you, keep fredding on!! ----some stupid idiot who wants to be anonymous
thank u anon this is super sweet!!! it means a lot<3
also ive been an animation student for 5 years now so i know a little bit but probably, less than i should.....i do Not practise enough
as for tips! let me try and compile a short list of things that help me!
• u hear it all the time but its true-practise practise practise!!! sketchbooks, digital, whatever strikes ur fancy. practising is the MOST important thing u can do
• understand and research the basics. you dont need to be an expert on anything, god knows im not, but its good to know a bit! this includes but isnt limited to:
colour theory! why colours go together, what colour schemes look good, etc. heres some basics on it! personally
[i also find symbolism of colour just as important. obviously symbolism varies from person to person and culture! but heres a quick guide on the usual symbolism of colour. if something sounds wrong to you though, mess with it yourself!]
tthe form of subjects-this means drawing basic shapes, and using them to construct [basically] anything! the idea is its much easier to draw and move around a series of cubes and cylinders, than a whole human body. heres a guide on how form works.
draw a box is a challenge recommended to me by my lecturer for improving on drawing shapes and forms! i highly recommend it!
value and lighting are important! heres an explanation on value. im not sure much can be done to cheat lighting and value, except for master studies (we’ll get to that shortly!) and observation.
the most useful tip on value ive learned, is to turn your art black and white, and see if it all has enough contrast without colour. if not, time to work on the values!
composition, babey. how subjects are arranged in a piece. heres a bunch of stuff on it [im still learning this one...rule of thirds i will Die for tho]
anatomy! this is the hardest shit. i still dont get it. my lecturers recommend andy loomis [heres a pdf of his figure drawing book] idt his way was quite up my alley, but u never know!
• speaking of anatomy-life drawing is an INCREDIBLY useful reference. so goddamn useful, u dont even know. they help u figure out anatomy! this includes gesture studies, and more detailed things. i recommend googling how a typical life drawing class goes down/tips for it
life drawing classes are very difficult to access atm, so here are a couple of online resources! [all of these will obv contain nude bodies]
croquis cafe-contains free videos that simulate a life drawing class! videos are more useful than images. has a variety of ethnicities and body types, which is wonderful!
line of action- a site with a variety of images on figure drawing, animal drawing, as well as hands & feet, expression/face focus, and environmental things. you can set it to play as a slideshow for as long as u like, or set it up to be similar in timing to a real life drawing class
online stock photo artists such as senshistock, who has compiled a useful little list of similar accounts over here!
• reference reference reference!! references are so incredibly useful, and anyone who tells you using a reference is cheating is wrong on every conceivable level. reference from photos, from movies, from videos, everything.
something ive had to do in every level of art education is recreations and master studies.
this means collecting artists work from professionals-be it historic painters, movie screenshots, concept artists, anything!
it makes you focus on their compositions, how the lighting works, the colours used, pretty much everything.
this is useful bc it can 1: get you out of your comfort zone and 2: make you use new techniques you might never have considered
online tools such as designdoll and justsketchme have poseable models for you to pose as you please and reference from! suuuuper useful, especially for perspective poses.
• experimentation! fuck around. use brushes youve never used before, try a new medium, collect every free sample from the craft store and just Do Shit with it.
• absorb every goddamn piece of art u have ever come across, and save what you enjoy.
and i mean save everything you enjoy. u like a movies lighting? a certain shot? an outfit? a random piece of fanart u came across? save it! look at it, figure out what it is u like
make a private pinterest board or a folder on ur computer, save everything.
absorb and yank bits from art u enjoy. obviously dont imitate someones entire style, but if u like the way someone draws hands, or noses, or eyes, reference it. recreate it. see what u like, and incorporate it into ur own art
art is a big mess of taking things u like and making it ur own
• study professionals! animations, artists, illustrators. they know what they’re doing.
heres a useful resource with a lot of rare concept art from animated movies! i go here a lot.
buy art books, or acquire pdfs of them, im not a cop, i dont care
• as for critique, i do look for critique, and pay attention to it, but it’s important to know not to take it personally. and i recommend asking people whos opinions you value!
i think thats all i can think of right now in terms of General Art....
if u want me to elaborate on anything or show me art, ask for help or just talk art stuff [character design is my fav and my speciality, ive been studying it for a while 👀] please dont be afraid to dm me or just send me another ask!
best of luck anon, i rly hope this helps! :D

Look we all miss Molly but-
The lack of Caduceus art is so sad.
Yes there is some lovely pieces, but for every Caddy piece I see there are at least 5 Molly if not 10.
We all miss him, but can we start moving the fuck on and start loving Tal’s newer character more?!
I mean jeez after last week’s Talksmachina with Liam and Tal and the joke of wanting to “learn” things from Caleb I was expecting to see at least some fanart or a fic pop up, but nope. A wonderful shipping moment with nothin for it.
I mean we’ve got a damn size difference here; start shipping that shit damn it!
For real tho, Caduceus needs more love and Molly should be on a back burner. It’s nice the fandom wants to keep pretending he’s alive but we shouldn’t shaft another character to do it, especially someone as chill cool clueless as Caddy.

I know I'm late to this train but bear with me
So, recently I started watching Merlin (well, re-watching it, as I first discovered it back in 2013) and now I fucking stan for it, I've been binge watching it (as much as I could because, school), I've been looking for photos and fanarts, I've even started reading long and short fanfics when I haven't picked up an actual literature book in months, and I don't like long fics.
But where I'm trying to go is... I've been so immersed into the series that I dreamt with Merlin, it's a quite short thing but I'll just put it here cause I just need to get it out.
(As more of a context, last night I stayed up late looking for images of the series, and while I found really cute and cool art, I also came across some spoilers. I haven't yet finished series 4, but I know shit goes down by series 5, don't know why or how, or even what exactly, but I know shit happens and it's bad)
———
The first thing I remember, is opening a wide, heavy wooden door that lead to a long hall, bright from the warm light of midday that crossed the multiple windows on the side.
It was clear and almost empty, I looked around in awe and realized that the company I had in front was young Arthur in his full armor, his vibrant red cape waved slightly to the incoming breeze, like it appeared just to make him look even more audacious.
He wasn't alone. A little boy was beside him, clutching his hand with a piece of cloth like had just cut his hand accidentally. The little clumsy thing.
Arthur had a hand on the boy's shoulders, telling him something I couldn't quite make out. Calming word most likely. He couldn't have been more than 10 or eleven, the small and skinny boy with dark blue shirt and a red neckerchief.
Merlin.
I didn't even reasoned against the logic of this temporal universe that would only exist in my head for a while. I couldn't be logical, not there, not right in front of them. I only felt overwhelmed with emotion.
I've seen this boy grow up, I've seen him poisoned, tortured, broken, bloody and weeping.
And there he was. Young and oblivious to what the future would, or could, hold to him. He was right there and he was so small and inocent. Complaining about something that, to me, seemed like a summer breeze compared to all the things he would have to go through.
I felt like crying tho I could only smile. And surprisingly, Artur seemed to know me, or at least to comprehend what was going through my head.
He lifted Merlin and the boy embraced him like he would protect him from anything, including the cut on his hand. And Arthur walked towards me.
I tried to speak, to ask something, "m-may I...?" I could only say.
But Arthur understood. He went close to me and let me hold the young boy.
It was like we all knew each other, like we had knew the other one for a while, for years. Of course this would be the case for Merlin and Arthur, but why me? It was like they already knew that I knew them, that I trusted them and they trusted me in exchange.
I hugged Merlin tightly, putting one hand on his back and the other one on the back of his neck, holding him as close as I could. It felt so strange to feel him hug me back. I could swear that if felt so real.
"Take care" I thought, not being able to bring the words up. I didn't wanted to scare him in anyway.
He would have to grow and learn, but it felt amazingly awful that that young boy right there, could one day be suffering things no one could imagine.
That was the last I remember, a wholesome embrace that would slowly let go, and I woke up, still feeling the warm breeze of summer coming through windows of a long white hall in an old castle that was never really there.

Wholesome Questionare Tag Meme
Tagged by @80sglamcowboy Rules are: -Post the rules -Answer the questions given to you by the tagger -Write eleven questions of your own -Tag eleven people
This is long as Hell, friends and I apologise.
One inquisitive bitch has asked me:
1. Name one person (real or fictional) that you think you could 100% take on in a fight
Foaming mouth guy from Avatar. He’s got no stamina, barely any health, no skill. He’s unfocused and weak and my noodley nerd-ass could take him. (Though I am a little concerned he has rabies.)
2. What’s your favourite snack rn
Grilled cheese w veggies, mustard, and grilled tofu w a side of ketchup made by my roommate. It’s honestly the purest thing.
3. Which apocalypse do you think you’d do the best in? (i.e. Nuclear winter/ robot uprising/ Too many vampires, etc)
O man. I love apocalypse movies and I love survival horror (that one episode of the X Files where they’re trapped in a cabin, anybody?). I also genuinely love camping and I’m a bit of a medical hobbyist. I also watched an unreasonable amount of prepper videos on YouTube. That said, as mentioned above, I am a couch potato weekling. Furthermore, I don’t do well in conflict so if the world hierarchy collapses into a power vacuum where you have to Orange is the New Black-style intimidate ppl for supplies, I would melt and die quickly.
My best bet, it would seem, is an Arrival-esque alien apocalypse where the ones who have enough patience and sci fi knowledge to communicate w aliens are at the top of the food chain. And worst case scenario it’s better for my ego to die at the hands of an alien than a human.
Sci go apocalypses are just cleaner y'know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
4. Best and worst fandom you’ve been in? Or have you somehow managed to avoid fandom completely?
Worst has to be Steven Universe. I regret not just moving on after I got bored. Ah well.
(I also think celebrity/real ppl fandoms are a dead end.)
My other fandoms all have various pros and cons and it’s hard to pick a favourite.
Adventure Time has great fanart, great meta and ppl have yet to descend into Homestuck-ian chaos. That said, they’re quiet af. People also fixate way too much on the fake fanfic AU Fionna and Cake. I have yet to read a really good Bonny/Marcy fic and that is a tragedy (a few have come close tho). Bottom line for AT tho is that it’s my go to wholesome cartoonist fandom. I like that it has depth but that it’s generally very simple and fun and that the fans are mostly shut in animation adults.
AtLA/LoK fandom’s biggest pro is that it’s huge and you literally never ran out of quality content. I’ve even made a few friends via this decade old franchise. It’s also enjoyably rich and complex. One of my favourite (now inactive) blogs was one that connected world building and little background Easter eggs to real Chinese history and culture. That wAs so cool!! I defs think as a Chinese person it allowed me to connect to non-western culture in a socially acceptable way.
The downsides tho are many: it can be overwhelmingly complicated (esp as someone who knows jack shit abt Chinese history), people take it too seriously, The Great Shipping Wars, it’s so big it’s a little lonely, the show itself has so many flaws upon greater inspection you wonder why you wasted your time on anything related to it, it’s an Asian themed story created by white dudes who make fun of their fans, the best parts of the show were written by other writers but those same white guys get k the credit. Also as w any fandom related to POC culture, racism happens. Anyways most of you know this already. IMO the best thing to have happened do the fandom is korrasami. Now it’s just abt Asian lesbians ruling the world.
(Though I also thoroughly enjoy the Family Rivalry part of the fandom. There are so mNy dysfunctional families to choose from!)
Rick and Morty is technically speaking my newest fandom. It’s got a lot of obvious cons (pickle Rick sexists, Szechuan sauce racists, asfhkkh incest) but one other con is just how pedantic and overly analytical people are abt the world building. I can’t breathe wo being corrected. RM has a misleadingly complicated high sci fi aesthetic that begets the kind of overanalysing my brand of overanalytical nerdiness can’t handle. Too many alternate universes. It’s just too complicated.
However one thing I like is that conversely I can overanalyse the writing and characters’ psychology/relationships (which I LOVE) and ppl take me very seriously. (At least they used to.) it’s kinda validating to have your 3k word essay on an old man’s bedroom and what that signifies for his depression get over 1k notes.
Rm also attracts the fun, super talented animation crowd so there’s boundless fanart and memes. I never knew I would like a gravity falls crossover retirement home AU btwn Rick and Stan so much but the art is objectively gorgeous?? So ??
I really dislike the lack of attention the female characters get from fandom bc they’re all really great? Female rep is limited but both canon and fic really do their 2-3 tokens justice. Also the jerry hatred is getting old (that male aggression… Like… Calm down, Jake) but it’s a refreshing departure drom when Megg from family guy was the butt of the joke.
Harry Potter, one of the pillars of nerd society, has both changed my life and irreconcilably annoyed me to death. (W no thanks to the racist creator herself!) One can’t underestimate how huge the hp fandom is which offers you as many reasons to love it as reasons not to. Harry Potter’s canon has complex world building that’s also charming enough not to take itself too seriously and much the same could b said of fanon. To a degree. Certain corners of the fanbase are fantastic shitposters and meme-ers and can draw you back in like a black hole. Casually enjoying Harry potter imo is where it’s at. The fanfic is probably one of the most impressively vast. Strangers at Drakesaugh, believe it or not, still updates and not only that, I still read it.
Not casually enjoying Harry potter is, um, yikes? HP and Hunger Games love to insert themselves appropriately in real life political traumas and honestly the dedication of the fandom can be overwhelming.
The HP fanart corner of deviantart circa 2010-12 and @flocc HP comics however are the best.
Meet the Robinsons, Ye Olde Fandom, still stands to this day. (Thanks in part to me ngl) As Iroh might say, they are a proud people. MTR is so bizarre and tiny it’s the only fandom I was able to read EVERY fic summary in existence (ones published on obscure sites excepted). The fandom has never ceased to surprise me for better or worse and mostly due to its age range. The original movie was intended for 8-12 yr olds and their (jaded) parents which means that now, ten years later, the fans are anywhere between 12 and 25. It has approximately 20 pieces of professional-grade fanart and fic and I am downright serious abt the quality and thoughtful complexity of this minority of fanart. Like I shit you not some of it’s almost too dark. However, tragically, one can’t talk abt obscure Disney fandoms wo also mentioning the incest ships (this is what happens when middleschoolers have to resort to cartoons to explore their sexuality in an anti sex ed world), the disorganised crossovers, and the blinding lack of imagination. Nonetheless, that a fandom of any kind could sprout from a 90 min cgi movie before the recession, based off an obscure but objectively fascinating children’s book, is still impressive. The fandoms smallness can in many wars work to everybody’s benefit: it’s a tightly knit community w little to no drama. And lots of memes (that I mostly make) to enjoy sincerely or ironically.
I’m also going to mention, very briefly, the Twin Peaks fandom, most of whom, even the die hards, are v casual when it comes to fan content (I need more fic damnit). Nonetheless it’s a decidedly cool art kid crowd for an art house show and I really enjoy befriending twin peaks watchers.
5. What’s one hot food that you prefer cold? (or, alternatively, one cold food you like hot)
Is it snobby to say I like food to be the temperature God intended?
Like I like cold pizza and salad-y pasta but I wouldn’t mind if everything were room temperature as long as the food itself was well made.
6. ya like jazz? What music do you enjoy listening to? Can you recommend any songs/ artists from that genre?
I think in some contexts I can like jazz. It’s very cosy and nostalgic, it can make you feel like a grand dame stepping out of your limo into your martini filled mansion as records pop around you and your fur carpeted living room. I also occasionally like jazz covers and alternate genres of jazz like electro swing etc.
Generally though I also think jazz is a little antiquated and a little all over the place. I lean more towards the ambiguous minimalism of mellow techno music like Jonna Lee, Grimes, Björk, early Lorde, Yasmine Hamdan, Austra, TRST, etc
I mean I don’t stick to just one genre (I imagine most ppl don’t). I like alternative (Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, Joanna Newsom) and some musicians who seem to completely exist outside of genre like iMonster and the Gorillaz. Not to mention straight up pop like broods, Ellie goulding, lady gaga and Lana del rey. (I mean technically Ldr isn’t pop but u get the ideer)
7. What binge worthy show do you like?
So many man. There are so many out there! Twin peaks, Transparent, Love, Grace and Frankie, Adventure Time, House of Cards, Bojack Horseman, Rick and Morty, Mad Men, Girls, Broad City, Black Mirror, Avatar TLA, 6Teen, Chowder, Over the Garden Wall, Flapjack, the first season of Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, etc
The list goes on. I’m a TV fiend.
8. What’s an old meme that you miss and wish would be brought back?
Always liked the Gothic [x town or whatever] meme. It was like a text post version of the cursed images meme. Currently I’m really enjoying the song from another room meme and I hope even after it gets old it’ll make a comeback.
9. Tell me your aesthetic
O man. That’s a can of worms! Okay. Deep breath.
I like futurism, of all kinds. I like strong lines and clear shapes. I like colour blocking and minimalism and glass and holographic LED neons. I like white Japanese urban tiled buildings. I like aliens and ruins and cubes and white and colour blocking and black. I like technology and aliens and Comme des Garçons and Issey Miyake. Rooms that are empty but for one light and one window and one plant. Love that.
I like the midcentury cubism and Mod and 30’s futurism. Clear and strong industrial shapes and curves and post modernist abstractionism.
I also love nature, I love most every Björk and Iamamiwhoami music video. I love the mountains and the forests and the desert and the winter tundra and most of all I love the water. A vast expanse of sky and sea w so many colours and textures. I love the 2000s and funny blob shapes and y2k’s obsession w secondary colours and shiny round things. Love pink. I am a grown adult who will never tire of pink. (Though I don’t really like when people overdo pink.) I love cursed image family photos taken with flash in a suburb. I love the grime and the sanitary aesthetic of suburbs and hospitals and brutalist office spaces. The fluorescent lights of the institution but with purple carpeting!
I love 70s mod and I love colorful 80s brutalism I like it when houses are shaped weirdly and they have carpets and polished curved wooden countertops and spacious nothingness where everything looks clean and cosy and bizarrely ugly and it all looks like an art gallery w too many plants.
I also really love maximalism and wood and detail and fur and velvet and embroidery and silk and windows and wood carvings.
I love 70s kitsch like John waters movies and Shrimps designer fake fur CDG17 where they just piled on knickknack after knickknack onto white dresses w food long trains. Toys and novelty items and lamps shaped like a woman’s leg in a fishnet stocking. (See also: most Tim burton movies, wes Anderson, Carrie fishers house)
An overwhelming mishmash of wool patterns with clean cubic 70s architecture and so many plants and windows and wallpaper and candles and cobwebs. Also really like witchy mourning jewelry and essentially every house in Harry potter. Love the unfortunately racist boho/hippie aesthetic. Any house designed by bill kirsch is a masterpiece. Woven baskets on the ceiling piles of hats and art supplies everywhere. Stuff!! Everywhere! Hidden passageways reading nooks fireplaces the Pink Palace from Coraline!
Everything!!!
I’m a cartoonist who’s a nerd for design so I like when concepts are taken to the extreme in a humourously charming and clear-minded way. Whatever aesthetic someone chooses, they should go all out and really dedicate themselves to the highest form of that aesthetic. It has to be perfect without being sanitary of fake. It has to be alive yet beautiful, frozen in one perfect moment.
10. Favourite time of day and why?
Dusk. I think it’s a nostalgia thing. I loved the hours before bed time as well the hours before dinner when it was getting dark and the sun was reflecting freaky colours along the horizon while I ran around the grass. It’s cozy but it’s spacious and adventurous. So many things can happen at dusk!
11. You have the choice to live in any fictional universe - which one do you pick and why?
Harry Potter!!! You get the best of both worlds: magical, over-romanticised Victorian/medievalism, wish-fulfillment surrealism and wifi. It’s great. Likelihood of dying is so low, medicine is so advanced and even then ppls n°1 choice of lethal weapon (Avada Kedavra) is painless. Me and Luna could hang in her garden. I’d never have to pay for the subway again. I could live a nomadic life in a tent w infinite space. If you chose to live as a wizard amongst Muggles you’re basically god and you can cheat capitalism. Gravity is my bitch! And I’m not gna lie my dream house has always been a combination of The Burrow, the Lovegood house, and Shell Cottage.
My turn to pick your brain:
1 Favourite texture?
2 Favourite smell?
3 Favourite children’s book/children’s TV show? (I’m talking about the bizarre abstract ones for toddlers)
4 Best and worst prank you’ve ever pulled?
5 Weirdest beginning of a friendship?
6 When you’ve been in fandom for a while you start to notice you’ve a habit of staying in the same corners. What corner are you in? Are you part of the fluffy ship corner? The intense world building spec meta corner? The shitpost comic fanart corner? Etc
7 If you could invent a class that would be obligatory for all high schools across your country what would it be?
8 What’s the weirdest thing you’ve gotten at Halloween while trick or treating?
9 Weirdest family tradition of yours?
10 Describe your significant other (or your crush, or your dream partner or if you’re aromantic your fave person) through only TV references.
11 Favourite piece of dialogue in a movie?
I don’t know 11 ppl but nonetheless tagging: @that-guy-in-the-bowler-hat @skairheart @nochangenohope @eventheslightestrayofsunshine@autistic-jaredkleinman@phoenixkluke
…and YOU (if you were not mentioned above and so choose to accept this mission)

Haha I'm sorry if I was a bit to intense on my post🤣💜 I guess one of the reasons why I'm so passionate about my dislike of Pudding is because I joined the OP fandom around the time of her villain reveal in the manga, and me and my friends/the whole OP fandom on Tumblr were absolutely vivid about it XD I still remember the countless evil!Pudding fanarts, theories about her possibly manipulating Big Mom with her Devil Fruit and being the secret puppeteer of the Yonko crew, not to mention that her character really seemed like the perfect opportunity to challenge Sanji's views on how women 'are always fragile with pure tears and need his protection'. Yooo I recall someone even started a post about a possible Pudding vs Sanji fight situation and we were all losing our shit about it although it was super unrealistic to happen, even back then XDDD One Piece was even trending because of the chapter, the picture of Sanji crying while failing to light his cigarette was everywhere we were all collectively losing our marbles auqbdbw
I still remember when me and my friend praised Oda in dm's for subverting our expectations, how he was being so self-aware and smart for deconstructing his arguably most overused trope to hit us with this intense and insanely well timed villain reveal- damn, it sure was something🤣
And then, when the wedding happened,,, it was like a cultural reset. Scratch noise and freeze frame. Ice Age 5: Collision Course. It was that moment when Patrick excitedly ran out of the store to have fun but Spongebob yelled "NO WAIT PATRICK!" and he completely froze in place, face filled with uncertainity of the future and regret.
Posts praising Oda for Pudding were deleted and replaced with memes about female characters being unable to be pretty + evil. The OP fandom was a soap opera and we were living the good life XD
You're definitely right tho, it's also a lesson learned- if you don't get your hopes up too much in the first place, you're less likely to end up so disappointed :'D
About Hiyori- I really hope her relationship with Zoro will just remain some "other characters think they're a thing when they're actually not" kinda joke??? Idk I felt seriously bad for mosshead in the anime OMG he looked so confused and uncomfortable whenever Hiyori threw herself at him aqudjwnw like girl give the guy some space please XD
Rip the anime truly turned Hiyori into a monstrosity :'D I don't remember most of her manga presence and how it differs from the anime tbh because the pacing was pretty different and unlike in the episodes Oda didn't spend eternities on a single scene... I still laugh when I think back to the sumo fight in the anime and how Luffy and that yokozuna guy spend a whole ass minute franctically waving their arms trying not to fall out of the ring pfff
Huhu and I love the headcanon of Hiyori being a lesbian, and Denjiro making sure she never has to deal with dudes being all grabby or disgusting towards her in private. Also would have been cool if he taught her to defend herself, especially considering the 'field' she's working in but oh well- It would be funny if she got to meet Hancock and Pudding and they all collectively come to the conclusion that they're actually gay and over-exagerrating their 'crushes' on the Monster Trio 'cause they don't know how to deal with people being real nice to them and immediately jump onto this weird 'omg guy is not a douche to me does this mean we're in love?!?!' train many lesbians experience before they realize that they don't like guys XD
Pudding's case is fascinating - because this is an example of a WELL written subplot, but Pudding's design doesn't match the given backstory AT ALL. Would it make sense for a young girl from abusive family who spent her whole life mocked by mother and siblings for her appearance and developing a complex because of it to turn sides because someone finally treated her like a human being and said something nice to her? Of course! (part 1)
Oh boy this is gonna be a bit long I'm sorry xD
I feel like I should preface this by saying that Pudding is one of my absolute least favorite characters in OP for many reasons, but since most of them don't have anything to do with the topic at hand I'll try to keep myself from straying too much :'D
But before I get to the issue with her design, I have to say this: although the premise of Pudding's subplot makes sense and fits in with the overall theme of domestic abuse present throughout WCI, the execution of her character is,,,, not really something I'd call very well-written, to be honest😅?
Her insecurities or inner hurt is not explored beyond the flashback/compliment, which was also not build up at all, there isn't another significant moment where she reflects more on how Sanji's treatment of her contrasts with what she previously faced, or even the many parallels between them and how they both stem from abusive households yet choose to deal with their inner pain in different ways is never explored.
I always thought it was kind of a waste that you have an arc supposedly centered around Sanji being the 'kindest', yet his kindness didn't really seem to inspire her to change her view on herself. Which, if I'll be honest, was what I was expecting after Pudding broke down- that she would get to have a genuine talk with Sanji, demonstrate her initial conflicted feelings at his comment because she was never complimented before, and go through some self-reflection and exploration by really looking at their stories of abuse and how that molded her into who she is now. But... naga. She is turned into somewhat of a joke and everything her character did before is pushed aside and not adressed again.
With the premise Oda set up there could have been done so much more with her, but in my eyes, Pudding is one of the most disappointing characters he has written post-TS and a good example of unused potential.
She had great potential as a villain too, and I won't lie, I was incredibly disappointed when she was revealed to be just another 'tragic' female character, but even then her 'redemption' or whatever it was that happened with her could have been handled so much better and just feels like a repetition of what we've already seen in this, and even previous arcs: aka, woman has man call out her problems/take care of her problems, she has a realization, her character development is done.
As far as princesses go her character breaks out of the mold a little, admittably, yet her struggles are barely explored, and given how much excitement there was for her to be an actually unexpected female villain after her betrayal of Luffy and Sanji, her suddenly breaking down crying and having that flashback felt incredibly flat and honestly,,,, kinda forced, after everything that happened? Also why did Oda first set up a vague connection between her and Lola, their shared desire of being free, but then,,,, completely switched to making her character all about being insecure about her physical appearance instead? Especially when we get Katakuri later and his position/struggles within the family are, imo, explored a lot more than Pudding's, even though she's had far more screentime and is arguably more important to BM's overall cause.
Eeeeeeeeehhh but I'm ranting again lol there is much to be said about her character, but on how that ties in with her design:
I completely agree on that, Pudding looking the way she does and being referred to as a 'monster' honestly felt like a fucking slap in the face xD I mean even some of her weird '100% human' siblings (Perospero, Opera, whatever the hell Kato is-) look more like monsters than she does. Also in her flashback Pudding was only shown to be bullied by her mother and citizens- (none of her siblings were shown to be involved, they generally seem to turn more of a blind eye when it comes to the abuse from their mother? Which is just as bad tho) but I kept wondering, "which citizen in their right mind would bully the daughter of a fucking Yonko, especially when there are so many other freaky things walking around in Tottoland xD?"
It's blowing my mind and honestly made her backstory even less believable.
The other examples you mentioned are all things I wholeheartedly agree with as well- hhhh Hancock's overplayed 'crush' on Luffy is still something that haunts me whenever it's brought up, the same goes for the unfortunate treatment of Tashigi rip
I absolutely think that Oda is partly influenced by editors, and of course when it comes to female characters, fanservice for future merch must play a big role as well- yet at the same time I can't help but wonder, when every women looks almost identical to the next one, are fans really gonna be that excited about new merch anymore...?
I mean look at this and tell me Robin and Hancock don't look the exact damn same-
My worst issue with how Oda writes women lately is that you can sometimes see what he's going for, what he could be doing, but he hardly carries through anymore and instead reverts to over-used tropes. I was really expecting Komurasaki to be this hardboiled samurai daughter who doesn't take shit from anyone and proudly stands her ground, but then he turned her around and gave us Hiyori, whose interactions with Zoro I can barely watch,,,, and let's not even talk about Toki,,,,
Kiku is like the only female character I care for in Wano so far.
Man I just wish we could have something like Otohime, Bellemere, or pre-TS Robin again :( Who were allowed to be actual characters-
Or a case like Connis, who was first introduced as a maiden-like character but then began questioning what was happening on Skypeia and ultimately had this badass bazooka moment while denouncing Enel hhhh---

i took 3 grams of magic mushrooms & saw ghost in the shell (rupert sanders, 2017)
ramblyyyyyyy but here we go
- not an adaptation of the oshii film or the manga and a distressing amount of dipshit fans & critics will scorn it for this but fuck 'em - very very aware of the multiple schools of thought on ghost in the shell (in conceptual reverence as much as aesthetic, this was clearly a film made by ppl who had intimately explored the possibilities of ghost in the shell & decided that this would be the most palatable configuration for an american audience in 2017 - the script, as a consequence mostly of the "for an american audience in 2017", is very banal & while it respects franchise legacy & prior characterizations it is also A Superhero Origin Story so that scarjo can have a non-marvel franchise BUT as a standalone film aside from the screenplay's cloying ambitions of franchise-building it is very good & enjoyable - kin very much 2 johnny mnemonic & for more reasons than just being a highly polarizing hollywood attempt at cyberpunk w/ a prominent beat takeshi supporting part, it has that same strange glee abt taking the big studio budget and going "now let's tease out past/present/future of an aesthetic", it's a film built entirely in its tiny little details (costuming, set design, the general dreamlike vibe, the sound editing, physical gestures) - scarjo is amazing in this!! i am generally not a fan but her interpretation of motoko kusanagi is fucking fascinating & weird & very much in the spirit of standalone complex's ver. of motoko (not quite at that level of brashly confident & comfortable yet, but possessing the same intensity & directness); she approaches the idea of "playing a robot" like, not just as "oh i've gotta be clumsy w/ my speech & motions + not emote very much" but instead like, genuinely behaving in a kind of alien impression of what "humanity" is??? like it's not even the usual sort of "robot that wishes it was real" shit, like she's hostile & inscrutable in affect in all moments where she isn't being hostile & there are so many weird little facial twitches + bits of odd body language she uses 2 communicate this is idea of like, struggling w/ being a constructed version of human rather than an authentic person and the arc is that she kinda just makes peace w/ the idea that she was once a person and now she isn't but she still retains like, this faint shred of this prior experience + she'll use it as fuel 2 live her new one fully in the terms afforded her, it's fucking weirdly heavy-lifting in acting terms for what plays out in plot beats as basically just tryna chum up ghost in the shell's whole franchise history into a post-raimi superhero origin story - the scene w/ the prostitute that's been in every trailer since the earliest teasers is a great moment for showcasing this performance's general vibes in a nutshell, she's like...not just doing bog-standard "oh wow this is a real human, how i'd love 2 be her" sorta wistful detachment, she's forceful + very fixated on how tactile & real the other woman is, like she wants 2 touch her not because she doesn't understand touch or the form of a face or the nature of skin but because she has an intense hunger for her original human perceptions of these ideas and she's got 2 find a way 2 reconcile this w/ her new body in a tangible way instead of just intellectualizing it - michael pitt's hideo kuze on the flip feels very much like a gimmick performance, but it's also a fun one: he's working w/ a lot of the same basic themes, but like cast as a villain for the bulk of it he's gotta dumb the shit down 2 shtick + so he's got the prosthetics & CGI freak body + he does a max headroom meets microsoft sam voice and he screams clumsily w/ every mannerism "I WAS HUMAN, I FEEL THAT I MAY STILL BE, BUT THAT I AM UNSURE I AM HUMAN IS AN IRRECONCILABLE TRAUMA" but he's fuckin' michael pitt so he's having a lot of fun w/ it and it's an interesting contrast of scarlett fucking johansson doing this very subtle character work while pitt's ham monologuing w/ scratched CD stutter tics at her from under cover of darkness - like seriously fuck this dumb screenplay it's very trite but unhelpful 2 focus on cuz this is a film that functions on so many more levels in ways that are compelling - the action is cool, riffing a lot on the peppier moments of oshii's films + kazuchika kise's arise OVA series but never just settling for carbon copy, uses 3D well (reminded me a lot of the sense of texture & movement & space in tron: legacy, which is a tragically overlooked film that maybe just doesn't work quite right outside of a theatre unfortunately) - pilou asbaek's batou is surprisingly good, i had him written off as far 2 generic action man but like he clearly did his research, his batou has a heart & a sense of humor & he absolutely has the body + the voice necessary 2 pull this character off (he manages 2 make the inherent goofiness of rendering batou's tiny camera eyes as a real thing on a person totally workable by having batou be proud as fuck of his augments & not remotely uncomfortable at the notion of them as a replacement for his real eyes, which considering they give him a dramatic "he got hurt on the job" moment after introducing him 2 the audience as a dude w/ normal eyes is cool & not corny cuz any other fucking film would've milked this for a subplot where batou could go "MAJOR, I ALSO FEEL YOUR PAIN, FOR I LOST MY EYES AND THEY GAVE ME ROBOT ONES, THAT'S JUST LIKE LOSING YR HUMANITY, RIGHT??" and that would've sucked) - beat takeshi gets way more screentime than you'd expect and as much as his performance is very much just him Doing His Thing that's honestly an ideal vibemarriage for the daisuke aramaki character + this also feels like a corrective 2 how sloppily he was used in johnny mnemonic hahaha like hollywood just karmically owed this dude one and he finally got it - chin han is a very good togusa, like all incarnations of togusa tho he gets fuckin' paltry screentime compared 2 everyone else and he also is just there 2 be like "he's the normal guy who is a pretty good cop" which is a downright shame - the rest of section 9 all feel like characters who are begging for a sequel and/or spinoff 2 rly flesh out proper but that also means they serve in a perfect capacity for fulfilling both the superhero origin shit (give you a hook 2 intice you 2 dig deeper) and also just like the general cool fringe sci-fi genre piece vibes (everyone looks badass, there's some neat little distinct tic or visual quirk on top of said general badassness that makes you think "maaaan i wanna see more of this guy" which fucking like all of these movies have, like again johnny mnemonic, that's an entire film of characters like that) - i love the retrofuturist plastic shell cars, it's extraordinarily "some high school kid's loving blade runner fanart" but it's executed w/ a respectable unwinking nature abt its whole shit, like it doesn't try 2 make this like the slick CGI ver. of a retrofuturist plastic shell car, it's just a shitty old car w/ hyper-stylized plastic shell on it hahaha - most of the spider-tank scene pales in comparison 2 mitsuo iso's beautifully animated take from the oshii flick but the actual exact sequence where motoko breaks 2 pieces prying the tank open is fucking gorgeous & riffs on iso + oshii's original work sublimely w/o just straight-up jacking it (this is a moment where the 3D rly shines, the frantic swaying of the arm as the last tendons shred and it pops off)
overall this was dumb as fuck but very gorgeous & kept compelling by performances that are strong & play well w/ the genre elements
