ArtBlitz 4: A DIY Creative Showdown with a Mission in Orlando
If you were anywhere near Arena Art Bar last weekend, you likely felt the buzz radiating from inside as the 4th Annual ArtBlitz turned up the heat. Eight artists faced off in a head-to-head creative battle, where paint flew, the music bumped, and the crowd held their breath to see who would emerge victorious. But ArtBlitz is more than just a competition—it's a project born from a love for creativity and community.
The article is made possible by:
John Q, one of the masterminds behind ArtBlitz, has been pushing this event since 2018. “We did two rounds before COVID hit,” he said. “Afterward, it was tough to find venues that made sense financially, but we knew we wanted to bring it back. The first post-COVID event was a hit, and now here we are with ArtBlitz 4.”

But John didn’t do it alone. His long-time collaborator, Kyle, joined forces with him to bring the vision to life. “Me and Q met about five or six years ago at the Social,” Kyle explained. “The owners wanted to give the staff a chance to run passion projects, so we thought, why not put on a live art battle with local artists and some chill music? It turned out to be way bigger than we expected.”

The structure of ArtBlitz is straightforward but high-pressure: artists have 30 minutes to create a piece in the first two rounds, with votes split 50/50 between the audience and hidden judges. The top two artists from each round move on to the finals, where cash prizes are awarded.

“It's not just about winning,” said Kyle. “We wanted to give these artists a platform. The first time we did it, some of them sold their work, and that was the goal—getting them exposure and helping them make connections. Even if we didn't make much money from the event, that alone made it worth it.”
John Q echoed this sentiment, saying, “What I love about ArtBlitz is watching people do things I can’t do. It’s just exciting to see these artists come in and create under that pressure. It’s a vibe, and we’ve been fortunate to have such a great turnout.”

Part of what makes ArtBlitz special is the culture around it. “John is the glue,” Kyle added. “He’s built a community with his radio show, events, and just being a connector for people who love local art and music. That’s why this event has grown.”

i won't be going over every detail of nathan's computer (like his email with his sister, which deserves its own post about them, who i've also brief a bit about), but just some notes i find interesting.
so, sean emails nathan briefly in-game. he also writes him a letter i keep saying is an email, it's just because of the text pop up so my brain goes "email" even though i can see with my own eyes that's a letter lmao. we see this one:

sean says several interesting things. a) make an appointment which coincides well with "don't bother me at work". this coincides well. nathan should know how to "put himself on the books" to see his dad basically. making an appointment with his mom isn't the inference i'm getting, but he is extending to nathan that his mom is also there for him.
b) calling nathan nate. he is nate to his father when things are good or he needs him ... but he is bad to nathan when nathan is not complying. but he seems to "feel" for nathan, telling he understands that nathan is stressed out. this is how he gets his son back in all the time; being "there for him". to say sean's abuse of nathan is just physical is silly. in fact, physical violence (to me) is not his go-to method for nathan. it's his last resort. he's more violent to his wife (or was, it's "smoothed out" over the years, less often as nathan became a teenager). nathan cannot be "nate", though, not here in oregon. nate lived in florida, nathan lives in oregon. nathan is also what sean calls him when he's being strict, nate when he's being supportive.
c) ik nathan is being booted by his psychiatrist so the inference of this "dr. bill" (dr. phill) and his effing book tour is so ... something. to me. nathan had a psych professional for like five years and now they want him to go to this joker on book tour? okay. but that's the type of guy that won't present the problems dr. jacobey did, and will likely supply nathan with medicine without issue.
d) he needs nathan to be calm and quiet. nathan is prone to screaming out his dad's name all the time in public (not jefferson’s, his father's name). pan estates is something nathan knows about, maybe not a lot, but he knows it's huge. it's for him, after all. it's his legacy through his father's hand.
e) sean speaks of cleansing arcadia bay. people take this as him knowing there was a storm. i think he was planning to essentially "burn arcadia down" because "god did not plant the seeds of this arcadia ... i did" is the vibe. he is the storm coming. he doesn't know how this co-exists with max's very real storm. he's going to gentrify and epcot the shit out of arcadia bay to make his (first) city. for the best and brightest ... affordably!
f) sean infers that his father was the same as himself now, and he will guide nathan the same way. that he is there for nathan to show him the right way; to their destiny. their destiny.
g) "when the moment is right" will pair well with a later line from sean where he infers that time is basically running out and nathan needs to be ready sooner than later. that party play fun time is over and it's time to get serious fast. is sean dying? ... i don't know. something weird is happening with him, though, and he needs nathan to take over more quickly than he thought. but nathan also isn't really "fit for the business", so sean is creating a self-sustaining legacy for nathan to build off of ... so he can do the family business. what makes a lot of sean his real money. the dark room. it's time to take your shot, nathan.
h) don't fuck it up. they speak quite casually with each other, i think, yet have an air of professionalism always.

i just needed this, too. nathan can clearly write quite well, has good grammar, spelling, etc. he just texts like a maniac. he's not stupid. he gets good grades, and sure, some of that might be a bit of fluff from his mentor and some rich kid privilege but he definitely earns a lot of his marks, especially with his passion: photography.
also, their dynamic is endlessly fascinating to me. he wants them to match so bad. i like to think they match outfits a lot, actually. he is her clone, after all.

the same reputation that we see is contradicted all over the place; nothing about nathan is actually consistent. some say he's great, some say he's a terror, and some are petitioning for him to be outright removed while others rave a glowing review. nathan is as inconsistent to others as he is himself.
nathan and wells see each other because they're both too fucked up to be at that school but they persist. nathan crawls to those classes, wells is all but constantly on the floor. thank god for that chair, huh.

we also know nathan has kate's video up on repeat. he's the biggest view count probably. nathan watches that video for many reasons, mostly because he's that kind of guy. i'll get into that for another post, too, but yeah.
this post is literally here to get to this letter (why do i keep saying email, im literally stupid forgive me:

"due to some vortex club activity" "on your part" "shame you've once again brought to this family" nathan brings "shame" onto his family a lot, nathan wrestles a lot with the concept of shame, feeling shame, and being shamed.
the vortex club was meant to be nathan's distraction, to keep him quiet. i've mentioned outright that sean knows nathan is partying. how do i know this?
he mentions to victoria in his email he told his dad outright to keep the cops away. sean complies. why do you think a teenager would not want the cops at their party? ... drugs? drinking? underage no-goodery?
sean isn't stupid, and neither is nathan. sean knows nathan is up to a lot of things he shouldn't be, he harps on nathan to just stay the course with his meds, and like ... he knows nathan. to suggest otherwise is strange. nathan has no problem screaming his dad's name all over that campus and town as a threat to others.
everything nathan is doing ... sean knows he is doing. sean is helping delay in finding rachel amber, sean is getting security for the dark room, sean is the reason jefferson is there (why buy a school that conveniently has that guy coming in to manipulate your son?). to me, also by the way, there is no way that nathan has access to his inheritance monetarily yet.
he gets allowances from dad, sure, but how do i know this: because otter's grandma is part of a trust written by her father that indicated she cannot access it until he died, and when he died, it was written specifically to be accessed in specific ways, not just an open piggybank. yes, a lot of rich kids get access to their accounts at 18 ... but not nathan. josh? yes. nathan? no.
"i've given you everything you've ever wanted, including blackwell academy among other things we shall not mention, but nothing is ever enough for you." again, to say that sean only abuses nathan, and i have assuaged how terrible he is, is still not accurate entirely? he spoils nathan, nathan is like this because sean allows him to be despite insisting otherwise. he's inactive in nathan's mental health. he throws bandaids at it. he tries to guide nathan. he's just so terrible at doing anything in that regard, and he's also an insane narcissist? so? makes sense to me.
what are the things that sean has given nathan that are not mentionable over text / written form (a trail) … but that nathan knows he is speaking of?
the dark room. that's a big one. arguably we never know where nathan gets the gun, everyone seems so nervous to even think of nathan with a gun, so probably frank. i think that is the one thing nathan does not want his dad to know tbh. that's probably something he's hiding. but what else has sean given nathan? worth investigating, right?
