Brand Photographer California: Elevating Your Business Through Visual Storytelling
In today’s visually driven marketplace, establishing a strong brand identity is crucial for any business. From website design to social media presence, the images you use to represent your brand can make a significant impact on how potential customers perceive you. That’s where a brand photographer california comes in—professionals skilled in capturing the essence of your business and translating it into captivating visual content.
In this article, we’ll explore why hiring a brand photographer is essential for your business, what sets California brand photographers apart, and how to choose the right one to help elevate your brand’s presence in the marketplace.
Why a Brand Photographer is Essential for Your Business
Creating a Consistent Brand IdentityConsistency is key in branding. A brand photographer works to ensure that your visual content is cohesive across all platforms—whether it’s your website, social media profiles, or marketing materials. By maintaining a unified style, tone, and color scheme, a professional photographer can help reinforce your brand's message and values, building trust and recognition with your audience.
Telling Your Brand’s StoryA skilled brand photographer goes beyond just taking aesthetically pleasing photos; they capture the essence of your business. Through thoughtful imagery, they communicate your brand’s story, values, and personality, enabling potential customers to connect with your business on a deeper level. In a saturated market, brand storytelling through visuals can differentiate your company from the competition.
Boosting EngagementHigh-quality visuals are a powerful tool for boosting engagement across digital platforms. In fact, research shows that social media posts with compelling images receive significantly higher engagement rates than those without. A brand photographer creates images that resonate with your target audience, encouraging interaction and driving traffic to your business.
ProfessionalismFirst impressions matter, especially in the digital space. Poor-quality or inconsistent visuals can deter potential clients from engaging with your brand. Professional brand photography conveys a sense of professionalism, competence, and attention to detail. It shows that you value your business, which in turn helps customers feel confident about choosing your services or products.
What Sets a California Brand Photographer Apart?
California is a hub for creativity, innovation, and cutting-edge businesses, making it an ideal location for brand photographers to thrive. But what makes California brand photographers stand out?
Diverse Landscape and InspirationFrom the bustling cityscape of Los Angeles to the serene coastlines of San Francisco, California offers a wide range of locations for photography. The state’s diverse environments provide endless inspiration, allowing brand photographers to tailor the visual content to your business’s unique aesthetic. Whether you want your brand to evoke a laid-back, beachy vibe or a sleek, urban feel, California has the backdrop to match.
Creative CommunityCalifornia is home to a dynamic and innovative creative community. From Silicon Valley startups to Hollywood entertainment giants, the state fosters a spirit of collaboration and creativity. Many brand photographers here are not only technically skilled but also have a keen understanding of current visual and marketing trends. They bring fresh, innovative ideas to each project, helping businesses stay ahead of the curve.
Experience with Diverse IndustriesBrand photographers in California often have experience working with a wide variety of industries—from tech startups and fashion brands to wellness companies and real estate firms. This broad experience allows them to adapt their style and approach to meet the specific needs of different businesses, creating tailored content that speaks directly to your target market.
Understanding of Digital MarketingSuccessful brand photographers in California don’t just take great pictures; they also understand the importance of digital marketing. Many photographers offer insights into how to optimize images for social media, websites, and online advertising. This knowledge ensures that the visual content aligns with your overall marketing strategy, driving better results for your business.
How to Choose the Right Brand Photographer in California
With so many talented photographers to choose from, finding the right brand photographer for your business can seem daunting. Here are a few tips to help guide your decision:
Look at Their PortfolioA photographer’s portfolio is one of the best ways to assess whether their style aligns with your brand’s vision. When browsing through portfolios, look for diversity in their work. Can they capture the essence of different businesses, or do they have a one-size-fits-all approach? Additionally, consider whether their photography style complements your brand’s aesthetic, values, and goals.
Read Testimonials and ReviewsTestimonials and online reviews can provide valuable insights into a photographer’s professionalism, reliability, and quality of work. Look for reviews that speak to the photographer’s ability to understand the client’s brand, meet deadlines, and deliver high-quality visuals. A good brand photographer should have a reputation for being responsive, adaptable, and easy to work with.
Discuss Your VisionBefore hiring a brand photographer, schedule a consultation to discuss your brand’s goals and expectations. A professional photographer will take the time to understand your business, target audience, and overall branding strategy. They’ll ask questions about your brand’s personality, tone, and message to ensure that the final product aligns with your marketing objectives.
Evaluate Their Creative ProcessAsk about the photographer’s creative process. Do they offer mood boards or concept development to ensure your vision is accurately captured? How involved will you be in the planning stages? Understanding how the photographer works can help ensure that you’re on the same page and that there are no surprises during the shoot.
Consider Budget and DeliverablesWhile budget is always a factor, it’s important not to choose a photographer solely based on price. Instead, focus on the value they bring to your brand. What deliverables are included in their package? Do they offer editing and retouching services? Are the images optimized for web use? Clarifying these details upfront will help you avoid hidden costs and ensure that you receive the highest quality product.
Maximizing the SEO Potential of Your Brand Photographer
If you’re a brand photographer in California, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is essential to ensure that potential clients can find your services online. Here are a few SEO strategies to help boost your visibility:
Optimize Your Website with Relevant KeywordsIncorporate keywords such as "brand photographer California," "California business photography," or "corporate branding photography in Los Angeles" into your website’s content, blog posts, and image alt text. Local SEO is also essential—be sure to include location-specific keywords like "San Francisco brand photographer" or "photography for California businesses."
Blog About Your ServicesRegularly update your blog with posts that highlight your services, share photography tips, or showcase case studies from past clients. Blogging helps establish you as an expert in your field and improves your search engine rankings by keeping your website fresh with new content. For instance, a blog titled "Why Your California Business Needs a Brand Photographer" can help attract local business owners searching for branding services.
Use High-Quality, Compressed ImagesSince you’re a photographer, image quality is crucial. However, large image files can slow down your website, negatively impacting SEO. Make sure to compress your images without sacrificing quality to keep your site loading quickly, which improves your search engine rankings.
Leverage Client TestimonialsIncorporating client testimonials on your website helps build trust and credibility, which search engines value. Reviews also generate more content for your site, boosting your chances of appearing in search results when potential clients are looking for a brand photographer in California.
Conclusion
A brand photographer in California plays a vital role in helping businesses establish a strong, consistent, and visually compelling identity. By capturing the essence of your brand through professional photography, you not only elevate your business’s presence but also enhance customer engagement and trust. With the right photographer, your brand can thrive in today’s competitive marketplace, standing out from the crowd through powerful visual storytelling.

Big Libs in bed with big oil GASP!
Big Libs in bed with big oil GASP! It’s a good thing they solved the climate issue in Dubi or this might look SUPER hypocritical. The author suggests these families got intertwined prior to their “peaks of wealth and power”, they bonded over “old bones”, Science and wine AND the Getty’s only had a few billion at the time.
This is a very recent article did anyone else hear this on main stream media? It’s fascinating how privileged all of these Dems are.
Direct Quotes:
The Gettys, too, are on that list. Founded by oil baron J. Paul Getty who moved under the radar until his "outing" as the richest American by Fortune magazine in 1957, the subsequent four generations of his family have been in the spotlight navigating fields from environmentalism to fashion to business, music, digital archives, arts, LGBTQ rights and politics. With five wives, the patriarch of the dynasty, J. Paul Getty, fathered four sons who lived to adulthood, and the family tree has flowered to some 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
In the wake of the sale of the company in 1985 to Texaco for $10.1 billion—at that time the biggest corporate acquisition in history—$3 billion was partitioned into four separate trusts. Currently, the family's combined net worth could be in the neighborhood of $20 billion, which will finally be divided among all the heirs upon the death of J. Paul Getty's last living son—Gordon, currently 88.
As the family has navigated personal and professional successes and failures, it has also become inextricably enmeshed into the California political fabric, with longtime close family friendships developing between the Gettys and current Governor Gavin Newsom, Vice President Kamala Harris and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, as well as their families. William A. Newsom II, Gavin's grandfather, was a surrogate father to Getty sons John Paul Jr. and Gordon. William "Bill" Newsom III, Gavin's father, was even the bearer of the ransom money when John Paul III was kidnapped. Newsoms, Harrises, Pelosis and Gettys are godparents to one another's children and make appearances at important family events.
Left to their own devices, Paul Jr. and Gordon spent a good deal of time at the nearby home of their St. Ignatius prep school classmate, William "Bill" Newsom III, and his five siblings. This lively Irish-Catholic household was presided over by William A. Newsom II, a real estate developer and campaign manager for Edmund G. Brown, governor of California from 1959 to 1967 (whose son Jerry subsequently reclaimed the office in 1974 for the first of his four terms).
Their great affection for him endured. When Paul Jr. died at his mansion in England in 2003, a framed photograph of Newsom II was near his bed. This intimate family friendship between the Gettys and the Newsoms spanned generations, including Gordon's four sons—Peter, Andrew, John and Billy—and Bill's son— Gavin, California's 40th governor.
Since moving with her husband to the Pelosis' hometown of San Francisco in 1969, Baltimore-born Nancy had her hands full taking care of their four children; their fifth child was born in 1970. Though she'd grown up in a political household, the idea of herself taking office was still nearly two decades off.
As they grew up, Billy Getty and Gavin developed an appreciation of good wine from their fathers, both passionate oenophiles and best friends. In the years after these families met and became intertwined, as they rose to the peaks of wealth and power, there have been inevitable accusations of cronyism. But they bonded over old bones. They were all fascinated by the science—
At Billy's 1999 wedding to Vanessa Jarman, held on a ranch in Napa Valley, Judge Newsom officiated, and Gavin served as best man. Among the 165 guests was a new assistant district attorney in town, a 34-year-old up-and-comer named Kamala Harris, Vanessa's new friend. Two years later, Harris threw the shower before the birth of the couple's first son. When their daughter was born, Kamala was asked to be the godmother.
Over the years, Newsom political opponents have tried to weaponize his connections to the Gettys, portraying him as a child of privilege.
In the election cycle of 2020, some airtime was devoted to pondering Kimberly Guilfoyle's path from Gavin to fiancé Donald Trump Jr. "Life's interesting," Newsom said
Amid the pandemic, the Gettys were shaken by back-to-back tragedies. Ann, the matriarch, died of a heart attack, and son John, 52, was found dead in a San Antonio hotel room. According to the medical examiner's report, he died of "cardiomyopathy and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], complicated by fentanyl toxicity."

The higher the quality of your property photos, the more likely they are to be shared on social media platforms and real estate websites. This increased visibility will result in more leads and a higher chance of selling your property quickly.

Taking photos of a property can be a time-consuming task, especially if you're not experienced in real estate photography in San Francisco or elsewhere. By hiring a professional, you can focus on other aspects of selling your property while they take care of the photos.

— THEIR CURRENTS ;

— MOST CHERISHED ;
Even though it brought up extremely bad thoughts into her head, one of her most cherished memories is finding out that she had a sister. Growing up the only thing she ever wished for was a sibling so being able to have Saige in her life has been a blessing she wasn’t she would ever have. The two are currently attempting to get to know one another and create that bond.
— THEIR LIFE STORY ;
The beginning of Lindseys life was never going to make it into some sort of fairytale book, her mother – only seventeen – had been ‘entertaining’ men in Las Vegas when one of them left more than she bargained for behind. With no money and no actual way to raise the child, she made the selfless decision to put her up for private adoption where parents who were unable to conceive could finally be parents. Lindsey, at only 5 days old, ended up in San Francisco to one of the wealthiest families in the Bay Area. Father being in law while her mother was in real estate (buying…not selling) they had built a little kingdom and all they were missing was their princess. Lindsey was given everything in the world – but was expected to produce the life her parents wanted for her in return. Pressure after pressure, Lindsey felt like she was slipping away from her reality – as if she didn’t belong. At nineteen, she got pregnant right before she took off for New York to be on Broadway. Things took off surprisingly fast for her - she quickly was the lead in plays. Her name in lights wasn't enough - there was an empty spot in her that couldn't be filled. So she turned to drugs and a lot of them. Always chasing the next high, Lindsey began to work less and less - until she wasn't working at all. As her money began to dwindle, Lindsey’s last resort was sleeping with her drug dealer for the products. Two things sent her running back to San Fransisco, the passing of her father and when the pregnancy test showed up with two lines. Lindsey knew she needed to get her life together for the sake of both her children. Upon returning home, she once more was plagued with that feeling that she didn’t belong. Doing a DNA test to figure out more about herself…hoping the health checks could give her some insights to her brain, she was surprised to learn that she was not only not her parents daughter, but she had a sister in San Francisco. After having a big fight with her parents she went off to find herself, luckily finding out she had a knack for photography on her way.

"Street in Chinese Quarter -- San Francisco" Stereocard of Emperor Norton on Chinatown's "Fish Alley," Washington Place (at the intersection with Jackson Street), c. 1870s. Possibly taken by the studio of Thomas Houseworth & Co. Image courtesy of Wolfgang Sell of the National Stereoscopic Association.
Emperor Norton: peculiar and improbable advocate for Chinese Americans
In a city that would become legendary for its many local characters during its first century-and-a-half of existence, the self-proclaimed, “Norton I,” the “Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico” occupies a singular place among the public figures of his day as a defender of Chinese Americans from persecution and exclusion.
The basic facts of Joshua Abraham Norton’s life and career after his arrival in San Francisco in 1849, emergence as a commodities trader and real estate speculator, and eventual financial ruin during the 1850’s are well known. (See Arnold Woods’ fine synopsis here: https://opensfhistory.org/news/2019/09/16/the-emperor-in-san-francisco-a-closer-look/)
Emperor Norton, c. 1878. Photographer unknown (from the Bradley Rulofson Collection, California Historical Society).
Norton re-emerged in September 1859, laying claim to the position of Emperor of the United States.
“Now Emperor Norton immediately set about to rule, issuing a proclamation on October 12, 1859 abolishing Congress,” Woods writes. “In 1860, he proclaimed the dissolution of the Republic. Following these themes, he abolished the Democrat and Republican parties in 1869. The Emperor kept himself informed by reading newspapers, attending state legislature sessions in Sacramento, and patronizing public lectures or debates. Though open to debate as to its authenticity, Emperor Norton reportedly declared that anyone using the term “Frisco” to refer to the City was guilty of a high misdemeanor punishable by a $75 fine.
“A few of Emperor Norton’s proclamations proved incredibly prescient. He called for the formation of a League of Nations approximately 50 years before it happened and ordered the construction of a bridge and tunnel between San Francisco and Oakland over 60 years before the Bay Bridge began to take shape. He advocated for women’s right to vote over 40 years before they received it. He frequently called for the fair treatment of minorities, including Chinese, African-Americans, and Native Americans.”
Norton’s contrarian and visionary proclamations were issued during an era of virulent anti-Chinese agitation. Over the next two decades, San Francisco newspapers published at least 14 proclamations calling for an end to violence against the Chinese in California, fair labor treatment of Chinese workers, and for the Chinese to have equal standing — including the right to give testimony and to have proper representation and defense — in state and federal courts.
With the onset of anti-Chinese agitation in the 1870′s, Norton presciently called for the renegotiation of the Burlingame treaty to avoid continued acceleration of strife over the Chinese presence in the City and the nation.

The recasting of the Burlingame Treaty did, in fact, occur, and the Treaty Regulating Immigration from China (a.k.a. Angell Treaty) of 1880 included a suspension of Chinese immigration two years before Congress enacted the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. However, violence and depredations against the Chinese in San Francisco would continue, and Norton would be compelled to take a courageous stand against the mob.
As Norton historian John Lumea writes in his brilliant compilation of Norton’s pronouncements about the Chinese here, “on 9 April 1878, Emperor Norton issued a Proclamation prohibiting all the Sunday afternoon sand-lot [anti-Chinese] meetings as a disgrace to his city. He dispatched the Proclamation via telegraph to the Sacramento Daily Union newspaper, which published it the next day.”

[THIRD DISPATCH.] Kearneyism Effectually Squelched — An Edict from the Emperor — Assessment.
SAN FRANCISCO, April 9th. — The Kearney movement is at last effectually squelched. Emperor Norton issued the following proclamation to-day: PROCLAMATION. — Whereas, The Sunday afternoon sand-lot meetings are a disgrace to this Queen City of the Pacific, they are hereby prohibited, under penalty of banishment of the leaders, etc. NORTON I. Imperial to-day levied an assessment of 20 cents.
Later that same month, Emperor Norton acted upon his own proclamation in favor of the Chinese on April 28, when he confronted leader of the racist Workingmen’s Party, Dennis Kearney, at an anti-Chinese sandlot meeting across from the Old City Hall (at the southwest corner of Eighth and Market, across Grove Street from the current Main Library).
Emperor Norton’s confrontation was no idle gesture. Less than a year before in July 1877, Kearney (himself an immigrant from Ireland), had led an anti-Chinese procession and incited the sandlot crowds into what would become a bloody riot against San Francisco’s Chinese community. The rioters to seized and killed a Chinese man who was passing by and then marched on Chinatown. The Chinatown pogrom began on July 23 and lasted until late July 24. It claimed the lives of four Chinese residents and cost over $100,000 in property damage to Chinatown. Twenty laundries were destroyed by the rioters, who smashed the windows of the Chinese Methodist Mission by pelting it with rocks. The mob also attacked the wharves of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, because this shipping line was the primary mode of transportation for America-bound Chinese immigrants headed to California.
Norton’s personal courage on April 28, 1878, was reported as follows:
Excerpt from article, “Kearney Catching It,” Daily Alta California, 29 April 1878, p.1. See full article in the California Daily Newspaper Collection here.
“Precisely at half-past two o’clock — there being present on the stand (besides Kearney,) Knight, Rooney, and others — Kearney called the meeting to order, but was astonished to observe the apparition of Emperor Norton standing on a box a few feet from the stand, his head and shoulders elevated above the crowd, haranguing them in a voice almost inaudible at the stand.
“’Emperor!’ said Kearney, hailing; but Norton did not recognize him, and kept on.
“’Emperor, will you please take a seat?’ said Kearney; an inquiry which, seeing there were no seats save the sand, must fairly be construed as an Irish bull.
“In a moment, however, amidst laughter and ‘Put him out,’ the Imperial person was dethroned, and his stalwart form and fancy feather were soon after observed on the outskirts of the crowd, and Kearney made his OPENING SPEECH. . . .”
The crowd would laugh off the entire incident, and the cause of anti-Chinese exclusion would march on from the city, state and eventually to the halls of Congress which would enact the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.
Today the historians of the Emperor Norton Trust rightly celebrate him as the “Friend of Immigrants” for his righteous stand on the “Chinese Question” and his fellow Chinese residents of San Francisco. (http://emperornortontrust.org/blog/2019/3/13/emperor-norton-friend-of-immigrants)
Quixotic as he was regarded in his time, Emperor Norton stands with his contemporaries, such as Frederick Douglass and Samuel Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain), as one of a handful of public figures who befriended and even welcomed the Chinese American pioneers of their day.
One likes to believe that a genuine sense of amity for, and comfort among, his fellow San Franciscans of Chinese origin brought Norton -- this most improbable and smiling advocate for Chinese America -- to pose at the intersection of Washington Place (a.k.a. Fish Alley) and Washington Street sometime in the 1870’s. His then-peculiar agenda of full rights and privileges for the Chinese would not be realized fully for almost another century, but, like the Bay Bridge he envisioned, history proved him oddly prescient.

1988 interview with Dean. This is a really good one and helps bring more of his life into perspective. Note: the newspaper originally censored his swearing, but I’ve put it back.
Guthman, Edward. "Dean Stockwell: Third Time's a Charm." The San Francisco Examiner (San Francisco, California), August 14, 1988.
“Six years ago, Dean Stockwell's acting career had turned to dust. Reduced to playing parts in unreleasable, made-in-Mexico movies that now make him cringe, Stockwell decided to chuck it all and get out of Hollywood.
“Along with his second wife, Joy, Stockwell moved to Santa Fe, settled down under the wide New Mexico sky and applied for a real estate license. He even placed an ad in Daily Variety to announce his exile: 'Dean Stockwell will help you with all your real estate needs in the new center of creative energy.'
“Stockwell never sold a house; he didn't need to. Instead, almost as soon as he'd relocated, things started happening to the former 1940s child star. It began with a small part in David Lynch's 'Dune,' and escalated with an important supporting role in Wim Wenders' highly regarded 'Paris, Texas.'
“Moving back to California to cash in on his fortune, Stockwell acted in 'Beverly Hills Cop II,' 'Gardens of Stone,' and 'To Live and Die in L.A.' He also played a cameo role, as Howard Hughes, in the newly released 'Tucker: The Man and His Dream.' And in 'Blue Velvet,' David Lynch's American nightmare, he delivered a chilling cameo as Ben, a waxlike, sexually ambiguous drug dealer.
“And now, at 52, Stockwell says he's found 'the favorite role I've had, by far.'
“The picture is 'Married to the Mob,' a dark, romantic comedy by Jonathan Demme ('Melvin and Howard,' 'Stop Making Sense') and Stockwell plays Mafia don Tony 'the Tiger' Russo. Wearing an Al Capone fedora and full-length vicuna coat, Tony is a rich, sardonic, larger-than-life character -- the kind Stockwell has never had a chance to play until now.
“Opening Friday at the Galaxy and UA the Movies, 'Married to the Mob' has been touted as Demme's first shot at a genuine box-office winner. Set in Long Island, New Jersey and Florida, it stars Michelle Pfeiffer as Angela DeMarco, a young Mafia wife who tries to start a new life when her husband, Frankie 'the Cucumber' DeMarco, is pumped full of lead during a hot-tub tryst at the Fantasia Motel.
“When Stockwell's character isn't ordering hits, drug deals and the dumping of toxic waste, he's lusting assiduously after the gorgeous widow. Meanwhile, bumbling FBI agent Mike Downey (played by Matthew Modine) is jumping through hoops trying to shadow Angela and 'catch Tony with his pants down.' Instead, he falls in love with Angela.
“During a recent luncheon interview, not far from his central California home, Stockwell spoke about the film, about his new happiness as the father of two children and about the bizarre trajectory of his long career. Dressed in a long-sleeved shirt and slacks, wearing a Panama hat and drawing first on a cigaret, later on a cigar, Stockwell emanates prosperity and calm.
“'I don't know why I was unemployed so long,' he says, reflecting on a fallow period that started in the '60s and lasted the better part of two decades. 'The only thing I can figure out in my own mind is that, for some reason or another, I was being made to wait until a certain time in my life when my talent would reach its full maturity and fruition.'
“Ironically, he says, he felt just as equipped 10 years ago to do the work he's doing now -- 'only I couldn't get fucking arrested.'
“Today, Stockwell sees harmony in the fact that his new success coincides with the arrival of two children. His son, Austin, will be 5 in November, and his daughter, Sophia, turns 3 this month. Inordinately proud and protective, he refuses to allow his children to be photographed, and also requests that the town in which he and his family reside not be named. (There were no children from his first marriage, to Millie Perkins, which lasted from 1960 to 1962.)
“'I want to make a lot of money and I want to put it away for my children,' he says. To that end, Stockwell has been snapping up job offers. 'A lot of people ask me, "How have you been able to choose these wonderful things you're doing? Have you been very selective?" And I have to tell them, "I haven't been choosing what I'm doing." Things have been coming and I've been accepting virtually anything that's come.'
“Stockwell's ambition is so great that, for the first time in his life, he actively pursues aspects of his career that he once shunned- interviews, for example.
“'My entire motivation in life is my family,' he says. 'I don't need to get an award. I don't need recognition. I've had that already. What I need is to provide. The best way I can provide is to be successful, and the best way I can be successful is to take advantage of all the things at my disposal to achieve that, one of which certainly is press.'
“Take a look at the young Stockwell, specifically the version that emerges from old magazine and newspaper interviews, and you meet another person altogether.
“Robbed of a normal childhood, Stockwell had made 22 films by the time he was 15 -- including 'The Boy with Green Hair,' 'Kim,' 'Anchors Aweigh,' and the Oscar-winning 'Gentleman's Agreement.' Working nonstop, he had a privileged life that millions of children probably envied, but he loathed it nonetheless.
“The son of show-business parents -- his father, Harry Stockwell, was the voice of the Prince in 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,' and his mother, Betty Veronica, was a former stage dancer -- Stockwell made his professional debut at 7. It all happened by a fluke: when Stockwell accompanied his older brother, Guy, on a Broadway audition, the casting director took a liking to both boys, and cast each one. The play, aptly enough, was called 'Innocent Voyage,' and it led to an MGM contract for curly-haired Dean.
“From the beginning, the pressure on young Stockwell was intense. His parents had divorced when he was 6, and when his father defaulted on child-support payments, Dean reluctantly became the family provider. Over a six-year period, he averaged three to four films per year.
“At home, he says, 'There was a lot of friction... I was getting all the attention, but I hated it. [Guy] couldn't appreciate that, because he wasn't getting the attention. He had all these friends, his peer group, that he took for granted. I had none and I resented him for being able to live that way. I was fucking lonely.'
“When he was 13, chained to a seven-year contract, Stockwell was described by one magazine as 'a young rebel who despises acting and resents every moment it takes from his fleeting boyhood.' Many years later, Stockwell told columnist Hedda Hopper, 'Child actors exist in a sort of limbo between childhood and maturity and belong to neither. Adults take them too seriously and other children are either awed or hostile. A child actor can find friends in neither group.'
“Finally, Stockwell fled Hollywood when he was 16. He cut off his curly locks, started using his real name, Robert Stockwell, and for the next five years roamed the country, working menial jobs and disavowing his true identity. 'People that might have known me from seeing my films knew me as a young child,' he remembers. 'Now I was 17 and I wasn't that recognizable.'
“Around the time of his 21st birthday, Stockwell was pushing papers as mail boy to a Manhattan plumbing firm. 'Of all the jobs that I'd had in those intervening years,' he remembers. 'I think I hated that worse than anything. I came to the realization I had no training at anything. My primary education was very skimpy, very poor, and happened under the worst type of conditions. I was literally at the mercy of the world.'
“Most of Stockwell's childhood earnings were squandered by crooked accountants, he says, and he knew that the tiny sum being held in a trust wouldn't last forever. 'So I thought, "What am I gonna do? Well, let's go back and attack this [acting career] again, and see if I can do it a little more on my terms."'
“What followed for Stockwell was a brief but impressive 'second career.' He starred in the 1959 film 'Compulsion,' based on the Leopold-Loeb case of the '20s, and won a joint acting award with Orson Welles and Bradford Dillman at the Cannes Film Festival. He played the lead in the 1960 film of D. H. Lawrence's 'Sons and Lovers,' and in 1962 scored the plum role of Edmund Tyrone in Sidney Lumet's film version of 'Long Day's Journey Into Night,' holding his own alongside Katharine Hepburn, Ralph Richardson and Jason Robards.
“Stockwell was winning the best parts, but found his attention drifting elsewhere. What was happening, he says, were the first signs of the '60s youth revolution. 'It captured my imagination as much as anybody's. And it represented to me -- I can see this in retrospect -- something in childhood that I had missed: the freedom and loving being alive, without responsibilities and work and having to report to the studio every day, and deal with fans and interviews and shit that I hated when I was a kid.'
“So Stockwell called his agent, said, 'I'm not workin',' and dropped out once again. When he tried to come back three years later, though, 'I found it very difficult, 'cause I'd been out-of-sight, out-of-mind.' What followed was a long period of marginal employment: He found some TV work, took parts in low-budget trash ('The Dunwich Horror') and occasional oddities (Dennis Hopper's 'The Last Movie') and co-directed a film with musician Neil Young ('Human Highway') but often just didn't work at all. At one point, he went 18 months without a job.
“Today, along with his buddy Hopper, Stockwell is enjoying a major career renaissance. And with his starring role in 'Married to the Mob,' he says, he's never felt more confident.
“'I knew before I started the film that this character was going to work in spades,' he says, adding that Demme, as director, deserves credit for taking a risk with such offbeat casting. Instead of picking Peter Falk, Vincent Gardenia or another ethnically identified actor to play the Mafia don, he went with Stockwell (who is actually half-Italian on his mother's side).
“Demme's inspiration occurred on a flight from Los Angeles to New York, when he opened a copy of the Hollywood Reporter. Stockwell had just changed agents, and in order to announce the fact, had taken out a full-page ad. Demme saw the picture, and instantly recognized his Tony.
“Weirdly enough, Stockwell made another film immediately prior to 'Married to the Mob': a Canadian feature called 'Palais Royale,' due for an October release, in which he plays a character almost identical to Tony Russo.
“'It's very curious,' he says. 'For all my years I'd never had a role like this come my way, and here it was twice. The Mafia don in New York, the Mafia don in Toronto, both of them colorful and charming and also threatening. And I just thought, "What am I gonna do? It's the same character." So I decided to do the same character in both those movies.'
“To take the coincidence 'one nauseating step further,' Stockwell says he's also got a part in the recently completed 'Backtrack,' Hopper's next film. This time he plays a corrupt mob lawyer, dropping the Italian accent for a generalized East Coast sound.
“It would be difficult to find a film actor who's busier than Stockwell at this moment. And it would be difficult to find anyone whose job history better illustrates the vicissitudes, serendipities and insecurity of a Hollywood career.
“Looking back on his misfortunes -- at the career that he was forced to accept as a child, and the humiliation he felt when he couldn't maintain it as an adult -- Stockwell says he's not bitter. 'When you reach your maturity, I think it behooves you to accept the fact that it's absolutely futile and fruitless even to speculate on changing anything in your life. All you can do is get embittered. So I accept everything that's happened as part of my life, and try to push it in a positive direction from the moment right now.'”
