I had a coworker say to me today that he's a bad Christian because he hasn't read the Bible all the way through, and that is a ridiculous thought
Was Stephen, the first Christian martyr, a bad Christian because he died before the New Testament was written and never read the Bible all the way through? No.
Are Christians who are illiterate bad Christians because they haven't read the Bible? No.
Are Christians who don't yet have the Bible in their heart language and are unable to truly understand it or even read it bad Christians? No.
Yes, reading the BIble is a good thing. Yes, being able to read the Word of God is a wonderful privilege that we have. But your status as a Christian is not dependent on how many times you've read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. (That would be a works based religion.) Your status as a Christian is based on the Holy Spirit living within you and your being transformed by Him.
So read your Bible, but don't feel that your worth as a Christian comes from doing so.

Reina Valera Revisada (1977)
Proverbios 31:10-11
10 Mujer virtuosa, ¿quién la hallará? Porque su valía sobrepasa largamente a la de las piedras preciosas. 11 El corazón de su marido confía en ella, Y no carecerá de ganancias.

I fall into self condemnation rather easily. I have been having wonderful quiet time in the Word and Prayer at night and last night I was thinking how I used to do quiet time in the morning as well and for a moment I felt as if I had failed God because I have two small children who need me as soon as I wake up.
And I do read a quick chapter and go through a brief prayer list the first time I wake up with the baby after 3:30a (cause I set my phone to turn off all other apps at that time to remind me).
But even without that, I do not stand condemned before God.
These habits are worthy and important but they are to help me grow and thrive and connect with Christ, not to save me. I am not less saved because my morning quiet time is a bit brief. It's evidence of the Spirit's work in me that I long to draw near Christ throughout the day, always more than what I do now.
These habits are for my growth, not my salvation. I cannot habit myself to heaven. Christ's sacrifice, and my acceptance of it, already made me a co-heir with Christ.
There is freedom in knowing that.

Now, I'm not saying that my Good Omens hyperfixation led to me reading the bible...
But I am saying that I'm reading the bible. I don't know why. But I'm blaming Good Omens.
#good omens#to write a book about a religion is to understand the religion I guess so here I am#reading the bible#getting a feel for it yk#it feels horrible#the pages are so thin#probably because it's old as sin and that's just how older books are#I'm honestly surprised it isn't falling apart in my hands#crumbling to dust#because of how old it is#it has footnotes#why? just why?#the first page took me 20 minutes to read#I'm actually braindead

The Book of Job Chapter 7
Job talks to God, continues the theme of the first chapters
Remember how I said that the first chapters reminded me of The Magicians in the way that getting God's attention was a VERY BAD IDEA? (in the magicians, it's polytheistic so any god could be awful to you. In Job, it's God but there's an angel named Asshole who responds to G-d when he gets overly praising.) So a lot of this chapter is Job asking G_d why he's paying attention to him.
He's not a dragon who needs to be set watch over. (Ok. just a second while I look up what that word in Aramaic is...Behemoth. The word is Behemoth. I guess that's a better translation than Robert Alter going "Bear"). He shouldn't be watched like he's a beast.
So the beginning is like Qoheleth - havel havelim - with Job describing his life as a clouds flying away and weaver shuttle. Also his skin is broken and festering and he's covered in maggots. Yummy. We are all going to die and no one comes back from that.
The next part is Job being personal. Why are you looking at me, God? Am I really that interesting? Is it really entertaining that you want to terrify me and give me bad dreams. At this point, I am loving Job's line "I will not speak with restraint. I will give voice to my anguish."
Note that this is a part of the grieving process. Job started out not speaking and then only speaking to himself. But now he's saying directly to God "No, I won't shut up."
And then we get to "what is man that G-d would even care?" and it's a tough question. No easy answer but Job is more on the tear of asking G-d to just leave him alone. He's already miserable. Why not just let him swallow his spittle in peace. He's going to die soon anyhow.

Hebrews 4:12 (NASB) . “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.”
“The Living Word” By In Touch Ministries:
“Through the Bible, God speaks personally to His children.”
“The Bible is the most amazing book ever written. God used human beings to record His thoughts and words in writing so that others could know Him (2 Peter 1:20-21). The One who spoke the universe into existence still speaks just as powerfully through the pages of the Bible that you hold in your hands.
At the moment of salvation, believers receive the Holy Spirit, and lines of communication with the Lord are established. Then, whenever the Scriptures are read, children of God can hear His voice, and the Spirit enables them to understand and put into practice what they have heard.
The Bible isn’t just a good book that’s filled with comforting words; Scripture is effective and always achieves God’s purpose (Isaiah 55:10-11). Today’s passage describes it as “active and alive,” and 1 Thessalonians 2:13 tells us the Word of God is “at work in you who believe.” This book has the power to change our life if we will believe the Lord and do what He says.
God uses the Bible to transform us from the inside out. Before reading Scripture, ask Him to help you hear and understand what He’s saying. As you believe and obey, your spiritual hearing will become more acute, and your time in the Word will become an intimate conversation with the Lord.”

We stand for a bride coming down the aisle, for a judge entering a courtroom, for the declaration of the Pledge of Allegiance, for the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, and for other people of particular importance entering a room. Why do we stand for these things but not for the reading of the Word? (via Please Stand For The Reading Of The Word)
