2017 Readers' Favorite International Book Award - YA Horror The Caging at Deadwater Manor Inspired by true events: Long ago, my dad worked at psychiatric hospitals for short periods to make ends meet. He'd come home upset, but he never said why. So I finally asked him many years later. He said he was disturbed by the patients admitted against their will because they were a family embarrassment. He talked about patient routines and outbursts. He shared a typical day. And then he told me about a discovery he found in the attic that was used years before...human cages. One was pink and one was blue - nursery colors. They were as wide as a twin mattress and you could stand in them. They had wheels. Chains still hung from the rafters. This bothered me and I wondered what it must have been like for these patients. So I wrote a book called The Caging at Deadwater Manor about a young girl, who's admitted against her will, stuck in a cage, and dealing with the demons from her past as well as treatments that shouldn't be used today. This is a disturbing read and not for the timid. It's a fictional account of the atrocities these patients endured. And it's written in first person to take you along for the ride. My dad passed before the book could be published, but I know he'll be proud of me today as I accept my book award tonight. Let's not forget these patients.
