The Tapestry of History, 22 – The Rise of the West, 17 – The Nineteenth Century, 4 – Nationalism, 2
Image – Congress of Vienna, 1815 – Image Credit – Britannica The first wave of nationalism to wash over Europe came via the French citizen armies of the Revolution and Napoleon. The military world was transformed henceforth. The old ways of limited warfare conducted by professional soldiers and an aristocratic high command could not withstand the sheer power and weight of numbers of a mass army…

the only place that the predominantly anarchist (but not exclusive to them) trend of being anti-everything or defining yourself largely in opposition to other things will bring you to is reactionarism, adventurism, and a stunted view of political change. An actually developed political position is worth more than 20 anti-whatever labels

Crypto fascist far right candidate won elections for president in my country. Watch me being unable to complete my animation degree and him to defund trans health care bcs he wants to privatize everything there is, any public service. He is a fucking zionist, hates minorities, wants people to have free carrying of weapons, wants to ban abortion and said all Argentinians must suffer for a bit and be "patient" with his nuts economic program that will only make the working class to suffer. But no one cares, people are just filled with hatred and reactionarism... sigh

russia and the prc are not and never have been even remotely close in power, influence and bloodshed than the us but the way people talk about it is indicative of having little interest in learning what living under these countries' diplomatic influence actually looks like, like what these govts try to lobby and what kind of narratives they manufacture etc. there wasn't just a spontaneous outburst of extremely restrictive anti-gay and anti-trans legislation in central asia, georgia etc. an international power pushed for that, an international power that is not just simply responding to us homonationalist efforts (though they are certainly a major factor) but also pushes for extreme reactionarism as a means of asserting their political and cultural influence in its own right

i do think a person's openness to talking about akio is a metric of how they engage with rgu's themes. he's much easier to digest if you keep him at arm's length, an abstraction of a concept rather than another person inside ohtori who is suffering because of patriarchy. i've seen this fan reactionarism that just acknowledging this is apologism, so - yes, akio does grossly abuse power by being an adult who surrounds himself with easily manipulated children. it's also true that rgu is a show where just about every character does heinous things to other characters, oftentimes the characters for whom they claim to care the most deeply.
rgu is about the deceit of binaries: the princes and the princesses, the abusers and the abused, and how the ways in which all of these are assigned to patriarchal concepts of gender blur how we even define 'abuse'. sure, it's easy when we see saionji or nanami hitting anthy, but does that change after the positions they later find themselves in because of touga? does shiori's need to see juri weak cancel out juri's impossible idealization of her? what about what miki and kozue do to each other? what anthy does to utena? you're not going to have a good time with this show if you need to sort every character into a finite category of 'abuser' or 'victim' - and i would argue that you've missed the point if you are.
so how could akio be both sides of the coin? anthy calls him on it in the end, that he as well has chosen suicide by pursuit of eternity. his sunlit garden of princehood, the devil who could not be a prince, who set up a game nobody can win without ever realizing he is included in 'nobody'. the entire system of ohtori is structured to mirror him in its every reproduction and he still isn't satisfied, because he's also playing a role i suspect he's begun to realize that he barely even likes. and you don't arrive at that fascinating a dissection of patriarchy if you're just saying 'akio bad' and calling it a day.
it's very relevant that akio is the acting chairman of ohtori. the closest we come to meeting the actual chairman of ohtori is meeting his daughter, and look at what happened to her.

Good thing about anti-civ is that they are so utterly shit, so fucking unable to offer any benefits to their vision, so unappealing to any semi-sane human being that they will never be anything more than an insignificant nuisance, as all insane reactionarisms should

Media literacy and critical thinking is so fucking dead in the water in Singapore that god forbid you are mildly negative about something. Whenever I talk about why xyz media is bad I get told that I'm thinking too much over a show/ I'm getting too upset over a show, that people complain about a show being too "preachy" or "political". More and more Singaporeans are relying on fucking chatgpt. We are becoming so allergic to reading and thinking, and that's why even the younger generation is backsliding into reactionarism.

Irony isn't lost on how right wingers for years tried to claim the Rich™ and Stablishment™ somehow favoured left wingers and financed them as a gotcha, with some "the right is the true to counter culture because of Netflix series with gays in it" and almost since the beginning of the year 2023, we had nothing but exposure of how much money is shoved into right wing reactionarism, from hosts on the daily wire receiving contracts of 50 million in installments to Fox News hosts being exposed as liars who admited they knew what they were saying about election fraud was bullshit, they thought Trump and cronies were unhinged dumbasses and admited the only reason they started their election fraud narrative is because they were afraid of losing views to Newsmax, the same channel that attacks and shutdowns veterans live on air.
Again, the single reason why Fox News started their slander and mudslinging at the elections is because it came out as being unprofitable to not do so, but no are part of establishment and mainstream because you like gays on Netflix shows.

they possibly mean the part about male modesty in The Metaphysics of Sex, idk if anything more specific. I haven't read the entire book.
Feminists literally ruined everything that’s attractive in men. There’s nothing hotter than a guy behaving a little crazy. Like tailing your car all over town until you stop just so he can ask you out. Idk I guess I like everything that’s considered toxic masculinity or whatever it’s called. Women have been so brainwashed. This is not creepy behaviour, it’s just a guy that likes you shooting his shot. So much more fun than sending a dm on instagram or something. I like them crazy, period.

It is not enough to be angry at capitalism, you also have to have a systematized approach to criticism at it and to the alternatives you seek as a result of the identification of capitalism's faults. The easy paths to follow are those dictated by bourgeois logic: resignation and apoliticism, fragmentation down to the individual and identitarianism, the defeatism hidden behind lesser-evilism, nostalgia for past times, ultrareactionary and ultraliberal positions. All of these trends are easily communicated and spread, especially amongst the youth, and all of them are connected multifacetedly to the interests of the corresponding sections of the bourgeoisie.
The current context of the growth in reactionarism and accumulating social tension march in lockstep with the disillusionment felt by wide fractions of the working class towards the management of capitalism by social-democracy. The children of the proletariat have assimilated a present of resistance and resignation at the misery presented to them as the only possible reality.
To demand of oneself the practical task of building a proletarian hegemony means taking that anger, and transforming it into a coordinated, popular response to the capitalist crises. This necessitates abandoning every position of expectation and rearguardism, in the contrary, it demands active and energetic conditions for struggle that can place communism in a disposition to lead, organize and amplify its positions.

while i appreciate and even see a necessity in the dialectic between tradition and innovation, and it's best to stay away from the brink of reactionarism, as for myself - i want progressivist thinking unambiguously purged from my being. for me, it was very literally life or death.
no matter how psychologically appealing it can be at times, a lack of accountability will ultimately destroy you. in addition, identity politics is consubstantial with selective empathy. when there is a total alienation between your sense of entitlements and the source and cost of those 'rights' demanded, that leads inescapably to social fracture and unkindness, and never to worthwhile, lasting reform.
