Becoming A Conductor: Step 115 out of 54830 - Status Update
Hello friend.
It’s been a while since I’ve posted one of these. Prepare for a long read. I hope I did not forget anything. Prepare for edits and ask if stuff is missing.
Previously see x.
1 - Instruments
a) Piano
In the process of changing piano teachers, because of the aforementioned imcompatibility teaching-wise (I am still a beginner, I simply lack the technique required to be productive with the current teacher as I have confirmed even more in the past 2 years, 3 years with her in total. Plus the language barrier is huge). Trial lessons with a new teacher done, have talked abt my requirements (even mentioned conducting), so far all seems ok and we are both excited and language barrier way smaller since we both are fluent in each others mother tongue.
Still not advanced enough to serve any purpose in choir rehearsal or conducting practice.
b) Vocals
Took another 3 voice lessons. Good relations with the teacher. Also sung a solo part in a choir concert and liked it very, very, VERY much.
3 - Choirs
Currently still singing in 2 choirs.
At some point also helped in another choir as an extra. In the process of giving up one choir, doing the last rehearsal cycle now. (reasons are multiple and interrelated, basically new conductor, section sizes are very, very much varying, more time required by job, plus other choir continuously schedules more concerts and concerts interfering with this choir)
4- Composition
Got nothing done.
started on some kind of quintet in summer 2017 while travelling/jetlag but stopped due to lack of piano available atm. roughly 10 bars maybe? does that even count? have not touched anything since.
5 - Research
continuously reading books in musicology from the library. Not a lot but consistently. Going ok. Purely following interest, no logic in my curriculum.
6 - Conducting
a) Education
Currently working with the Phillips book (university class text book) in a autodidactic way. Basically it’s me conducting in front of a camera or mirror. Definitely learning a lot. Still feel it would be even  better if I had experienced person giving me feed back _and_ if I was conducting somebody who produces sound (in contrast to my bedroom wall)
Challenge: Working continuously on the course at night at home (still working my normal engineering dayjob which has increased in workload)
b) Practice
Slacked in the preparation of choir music.
Often tried to do one or two songs in detail, got frustrated for not understanding all and ... yeah
Intermediate plans: Start with studying the new program intensly of one choir (We are going to play with the orchestra that kicked me out, so that is going to be quite the challenge on the mental level. But I really truly want to be ready if the stars align and they would need a conductor in addition to the choir responsible and the orchestra responsible ones ;) )
c) Interning
well. I would not call it interning. BUT, this happened. So, WOHOO.
It was short-lived, however. I have reached out to the conductor, they gave me tipps on how to improve (no feed back on the actual thing but more like what they would recommend I should do). Unfortunately, the conductor had to leave due to some very sad and very unfortunate circumstances.
So back to square one.
7 - Theory
Not much has happened. Need level-appropriate resources.
Tried a few youtube channels, have not found the one with the right ratio of solid information and funny bits yet.
8 - own project
By now have done a total of 3 small projects in this town on my own. They went ok.
Am behind on planning the 4th one. By now I have well defined what I want this small series to be, but currently I have not found the next appropriate piece yet. Am pretty behind, since it should be happening in spring this year because of other job logistics. For now people are still motivated to engage in these small projects.
Common negative aspect of these projects is that I am always making music myself, too and that I am mostly the least accomplished musician. This will not change in the foreseeable future. (Musicwise, it is more of a chamber music situation, so a pretty egalitarian input from everybody. I will take the lead most of the times. However, I still list it since I do the whole project management).
I have learned that I absolutely need to set the “concert”. I would like to address more people, currently it is more a pretty private thing. which is also fine from an artistic point of view.
Bref, I really should start planning for project No 4.
Currently do not have the energetic capacity to think about something outside my small little series.
9 - Networking and coming out
a) networking
Slowly growing. Because of my involvement with the choirs I get to know people, even a few professionals in the local classical music business. Still not the biggest network.
b) coming out
have talked to more friends and choir members about this conducting dream. Most of them are supportive on an abstract level since they have not seen my conduct.
And then of course talked to my conductor in the aftermath of the famours warm-up. First coming out to a professional conductor: done. As metioned above, they had to leave and unfortunately we do not have any personal connection. Even when saying good bye to them I was so stressed to do the right thing I could not ask to keep in contact (but at least managed to thank them in specific terms for what I have learned from them). Not sure over all about this.
Next steps (short term):
-get project no 4 in line
-get in contact with a vocal coach to work on the stuff suggested by the conductor
-study the new program in detail (focus on the choir pieces)
-have a warm-up sheet ready (hell yes)
-finish the conducting text book
-find a theory book suitable for my needs.

Kanye West Biography, Age And Net Worth
Tumblr media
Kanye West is a Grammy Award-winning rapper, record producer, and fashion designer who is known for his outspokenness. Kanye West: Who Is He? Kanye West first rose to prominence in the music industry as a producer for well-known acts. With his 2004 debut, College Dropout, he demonstrated his rap ability, and albums like Late Registration (2005), My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010), Yeezus (2013), and Yeezus (2014) confirmed his spot atop the hip hop world (2018). West is a Grammy Award winner who is also noted for his awards show antics, excursions into fashion, and his marriage to Kim Kardashian. Kanye West Life Style And Birth Kanye Omari West was born on June 8, 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia. Ray, his father, was a photojournalist for the Atlanta Journal and a member of the Black Panther Party; he eventually became a Christian counselor. Donda West, West's mother, was a teacher who went on to become a professor of English at Chicago State University and then her son's manager before dying in 2007 at the age of 58 from heart illness following cosmetic surgery. Her death would have a huge impact on West's musical career as well as his personal life. When West was three, Ray and Donda split amicably. Following that, he was reared by his mother in Chicago's middle-class South Shore neighborhood and spent summers with his father. West traveled to China with Donda when he was ten years old, where she taught as part of a university exchange program; he was the only foreigner in his class. West was lured to the South Side's hip-hop scene after returning to Chicago, and he befriended DJ and producer No I.D., who became his mentor. West received a scholarship to study at Chicago's American Academy of Art after graduating from Polaris High School, but he dropped out to pursue music full-time, a move that would later inspire the title of his first solo album. Kanye West Net Worth Net Worth: $6.6 Billion Date of Birth: Jun 8, 1977 (44 years old) Gender: Male Height: 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m) Profession: Record producer, Songwriter, Singer, Actor, Film Producer, Rapper, Businessperson, Screenwriter, Fashion designer, Music Video Director Nationality: United States of America Kanye West Music Career West created a trademark sound known as "chipmunk soul," which features sped-up soul samples, after spending time producing for local musicians. Following that, in 2001, he relocated to New York. He got his big break here, working on the production for Jay-song Z's "This Can't Be Life," which debuted on the album Dynasty: Roc La Familia in 2000. He reinforced his rising fame the following year by producing four songs on Jay Z's The Blueprint, widely regarded as one of the best rap albums of all time. West went on to create for other notable artists including as Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Ludacris, as well as singers Alicia Keys and Beyoncé. West, on the other hand, was not content to be a sidekick. He aspired to be the main attraction, but found it difficult to be taken seriously as a rapper at first. He begged Roc-A-Fella Records to let him rap, but as co-founder Jay-Z told Time magazine later, "We were all raised as street kids who had to do whatever it took to get by. Then there's Kanye West, who, as far as I'm aware, has never worked a day in his life. I couldn't see how it could possibly work." Other labels reacted in a similar way to West. He said, "I'd leave meetings crying all the time." Damon Dash reluctantly signed West to Roc-A-Fella in 2002, but he did so only to keep him as a producer. West was injured in a head-on vehicle incident while driving home from a recording session in a California studio in October of that year, leaving him with a cracked jaw. With his jaw still wired shut after reconstructive surgery, he wrote and recorded "Through the Wire," a song about the experience. While recuperating in L.A., he wrote the most of the rest of his debut album. However, once the album was finished, it was leaked on the internet. West chose to improve it by revising and rewriting songs and fine-tuning the production, which included the addition of heavier drums, gospel choirs, and strings (he paid for orchestras out of his own pocket). Dropout from College The album was finally published in February 2004 and quickly became a hit, selling 2.6 million copies and propelling West to stardom. The College Dropout defied the gangsta-rap mold, including topics like as consumerism (of which he was critical at the time), racism, higher education, and his religious convictions. "They say you can rap about anything but Jesus," he rapped on the tune "Jesus Walks," "That means weapons, sex, lies, videotapes/But if I talk about God, my album won't get played." The College Dropout reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart, and West garnered ten Grammy nominations, winning three of them, including Best Rap Song and Best Rap Album for "Jesus Walks." West formed his record label, GOOD music — an acronym for Getting Out Our Dreams — with Sony BMG shortly after the album's release. He'd release songs by John Legend, Big Sean, Common, Pusha-T, and others. Registration after the deadline West spent a year and $2 million on his sophomore album, enlisting the help of an orchestra and composer Jon Brion, who had never worked with a rapper before. According to the New York Times, West, the restless bourgeois-creative, wanted to "see how far he might expand" hip hop. The results were outstanding, with Best Rap Album winning again, as well as Best Rap Song for "Diamonds from Sierra Leone" and Best Rap Solo Performance for "Gold Digger," and Best Rap Song for "Diamonds from Sierra Leone." Late Registration premiered at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200, a feat West would replicate with each solo album release after that. In Rolling Stone's five-star review of the album, Rob Sheffield stated, "On Late Registration, the Louis Vuitton Don doesn't just want to create pop music — he wants to be pop music." "As a result, he improves his lyrical game, displays his epic production skills, reaches higher, pushes harder, and declares the entire world of music to be hip hop turf." West appeared on an NBC program in September 2005, a month after the release of Late Registration, to collect donations for Hurricane Katrina victims. When he declared live on air that "George Bush doesn't care about Black people," echoing widespread criticism of the president for not visiting the damaged city of New Orleans straight away, he ignited a national media storm - his first, but by no means his last. West's remark enraged Bush, who subsequently described it as a "disgusting moment." Graduation West was motivated to create hip hop more anthemic, to be performed in stadiums and arenas, after traveling with U2 in 2005-2006. He began to incorporate elements of both rock & roll (the Stones, Led Zeppelin, and the Killers) into his music (which originated in his hometown of Chicago). Graduation, his third album, was released on September 11, 2007. It was released on the same day as 50 Cent's album Curtis, in a struggle for hip-soul hop's between the educated showman and the bullet-scarred street thug. But there could only be one winner with Graduation's breakthrough (for hip-hop) palette of layered electronic synthesizers and sloganeering wordplay — "I'm like the fly Malcolm X/Buy any jeans necessary," he sneered on "Good Morning" — West's album went straight to No. 1 after selling 957,000 copies in its first six days. With the music industry wringing its hands over the internet's impact on profit margins, West simply embraced the change with his video for the single "Can't Tell Me Nothing," in which he hired comedian Zach Galifianakis to lip-sync along to the lyrics on an alternate version, resulting in a YouTube viral sensation. The Death of Kanye West Mother West was on top of the world, acclaimed as the musician who had put gangster rap on the verge of extinction. Then catastrophe happened in November 2007. Donda, his adored mother, died of a heart attack after cosmetic surgery. He dedicated a performance of "Hey Mama" to her on his first show after the funeral. West split up with his fiancée, Alexis Phifer, a few months later. 808s & Heartbreak, his next album, was released 12 months after his mother died and was laced with grief, agony, and isolation. West even gave up rapping in favor of singing through an Auto-Tune vocal processor, which gave his voice a robotic tone – a technique that is now commonplace in hip hop. "Hip hop is done for me," he declared after describing the new album as "pop art" (not to be confused with the visual art movement). (It wasn't; he won Grammys for guest raps on Estelle's "American Boy" and TI's "Swagga Like Us" that year.) Kanye West Earnings By Year Follow Money Year Earnings 2007 $17,000,000 2008 $30,000,000 2009 $25,000,000 2010 $12,000,000 2011 $16,000,000 2012 $35,000,000 2013 $20,000,000 2014 $30,000,000 2015 $22,000,000 2016 $18,000,000 2017 $22,000,000 2018 $90,000,000 2019 $100,000,000 2020 $200,000,000 Total: $437,000,000 Taylor Swift's VMA Feud and Diss The fragility of West's mental health was brought into question the following year at the MTV Video Music Awards. He stormed the stage during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for the Best Female Video award (for "You Belong to Me") at Radio City Music Hall in New York to argue that Beyoncé should have won instead. The reverberations from that moment are still being felt. West apologized, then retracted his apology in a New York Times interview in 2013. By 2015 they had become friends and were even spotted at dinner together. Then in 2016 Kanye rapped on his song "Famous": "I feel like me and Taylor might still have s*x/Why? I made that b**** famous." Swift responded from the stage at the 2016 Grammy Awards, this time unapologetically, with the words: "To all the young women out there, I want to say something: There will be people who try to undermine your success or take credit for your successes along the way... Don't let those folks get in the way." Fashion West took a break from music after the Swift fiasco to focus on fashion. Since 2006, he'd been collaborating with limited-edition sneakers with brands including A Bathing Ape and Nike. To obtain experience, he reportedly interned at Gap in 2009 and later Fendi. In 2011, he debuted his first collection in Paris, however it was critically lambasted. Long Nguyen, style director of Flaunt magazine, sniffed, "You can't just dump some fox fur on a runway and call it luxury." At the show's after-party, West delivered a wounded-sounding address. "Please take it easy," he said. "Please give me the opportunity to mature." After a lackluster response to his second collection a year later, West stated that he would no longer be presenting in Paris. In 2013, he collaborated on a capsule collection with the French label APC, and in October 2015, he struck a $10 million agreement with Adidas, launching his first sportswear collection, Yeezy Season 1, with the brand. The label has received mixed reviews, while Anna Wintour praised his Season 5 collection in February 2017. She told the New York Post, "I really liked it." "A little more attention than we've seen from him before." My Dark Twisted Fantasy West returned to music in November 2010 with his fifth album, a bombastic and towering monument to self-aggrandizement that sounded "like an instant greatest hits," according to Pitchfork. It was a bombastic and towering monument to self-aggrandizement with paranoid celebrity and rampant consumption as the dominant themes: it was a bombastic and towering monument to self-aggrandizement that sounded "like an instant greatest hits" according to Pitchfork It was Kanye West's best and worst all bundled into one: a magnum work that bordered on the insane. It spawned four songs, including "Monster," on which West, Jay Z, and Rick Ross were famously beaten into second place by Nicki Minaj's furious guest verse. In 2011, West and his old sparring partner Jay Z released Watch the Throne, a joint album that delivered seven songs, including "Otis" and "Niggas in Paris," as well as three additional Grammy awards for West and Jay Z. Relationship In 2012, West released Cruel Summer, a compilation album including artists from his GOOD Music label. However, his romance with reality-TV star Kim Kardashian, which began in April, dominated the headlines that year. They married on May 24, 2014, in the medieval Fort di Belvedere in Italy, after West proposed at the AT&T baseball stadium in San Francisco on October 21, 2013. As Kardashian came down the aisle, Andrea Bocelli performed, The designer Rachel Roy, tennis champion Serena Williams, film director Steve McQueen, and music performers Legend, Q-Tip, Rick Rubin, Tyga, and Lana Del Rey were among the visitors. North (born June 15, 2013), Saint (born December 5, 2015), and another daughter are the couple's three children (born via surrogate January 15, 2018). Psalm, the couple's fourth child, was born via surrogate in May 2019. Yeezus West's sixth studio album, Yeezus, was released in June 2013 and had little evidence that the rapper was living a happy life. West had engaged producer Rick Rubin to make sweeping alterations just days before the album's release, thus the sound was aggressive, raw, and almost entirely melody-free. On "I Am a God," which featured the iconic phrase "Hurry up with my stupid croissants," West sounded neurotic and egocentric to the point of bathos. With the exception of the excellent glam-rock-inspired hit "Black Skinhead," West stated the album was a "attack against the commercial," and it certainly included nothing that was radio-friendly (the first of only two singles from the album). Yeezus is the only album by Kanye West to have sold less than one million copies in the United States. Nonetheless, it was highly welcomed by critics, including rock veteran Lou Reed, who told Rolling Stone that "It's as if you're crafting a movie with each tune... The guy is incredibly gifted." Beef on Jimmy Kimmel In September, West and Jimmy Kimmel had a Twitter dispute after the talk-show host ridiculed an interview West had given to the BBC in the United Kingdom. On his show, Jimmy Kimmel hired young actors to recite some of West's more bombastic remarks. West, on the other hand, was not amused. One of a series of outraged tweets said, "Jimmy Kimmel is out of line to try to mimic in any manner the first piece of honest media in years." During his next episode, Kimmel happily read out West's tweets, eliciting more ire from the rapper, who shared a link to a Slate piece headed "Kanye was right." West returned on Jimmy Kimmel Live the following month, and the conversation lasted the most of the broadcast, with multiple free-flowing Kanye monologues covering everything from his career to his thoughts on the paparazzi, Steve Jobs, and Jesus. "I don't know whether you're aware of this, but a lot of people believe you're a jerk," Kimmel said, before complimenting West's portrayal. West had been hurt by Kimmel's characterization of him, as it turned out, because the two had known each other before to the disagreement. "When I'm cooking up a comedic routine," Kimmel said, "regarding a celebrity's feelings is not something that comes to mind." They had cleared the air by the end of the show. More Public Outbursts, Collaboration with Paul McCartney, and Rihanna West made history as the first rapper to collaborate with Paul McCartney, releasing the tune "Four Five Seconds" alongside the Beatles icon and Rihanna at the start of 2015. But a month later, there was yet another award-show snarl, this time at the Grammys, when West protested to Beck winning Best Album. After the ceremony, West remarked, "Beck needs to respect artistry, and he should have presented his trophy to Beyoncé." In an interview with The Sunday Times newspaper in England a few months later, he withdrew his comments. "My image of a gentleman who plays 14 instruments not respecting craftsmanship was incorrect," he admitted. West, along with other artists such as Beyoncé, Jay Z, Rihanna, Madonna, Chris Martin, and Nicki Minaj, was introduced as a co-owner of the music-streaming service Tidal in March. Despite a petition with 135,000 signatures requesting for him to be removed from the lineup, he headlined the Glastonbury festival in the United Kingdom in June. The Life of Pablo Picasso In the lead-up to his seventh album, The Life of Pablo, there was even more controversy. West made headlines before the film's release on February 14, 2016, for a series of inflammatory tweets, including one declaring Bill Cosby, who is on trial for drugging and raping women, to be innocent. He began a feud with Wiz Khalifa, a musician he mistookly believed had ridiculed his wife, Kim Kardashian ("I am your OG and I will be respected as such," West tweeted.). He also expressed regret for appearing to disparage Michael Jordan in his lyrics. West then oddly advised his fans to lobby Facebook founder Mark Zuckerber the day after his album was released. He also expressed regret for appearing to disparage Michael Jordan in his lyrics. West then oddly pushed his fans to lobby Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to spend $1 billion in West's "ideas" the day after his album was released. He also claimed to be in debt for $53 million. Thealbum was yet another departure from the norm, as well as a triumph. It has a considerably broader sound than Yeezus, integrating a wide range of sounds, styles, and inspirations, ranging from trap to gospel to Auto-Tune crooning, avant-pop, vintage soul, and dancehall. Frank Ocean, Chance the Rapper, Rihanna, Desiigner, and Kid Cudi were among the guest vocalists. It was West's sixth solo album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 list in a row. Cancellation of the Tour and Return to the Spotlight West paused a show in Sacramento on November 20, 2016, while on his Saint Pablo Tour, to go on a rambling diatribe about radio playlists, MTV, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Beyoncé, and Jay Z ( "Call me, Jay Z... I know you've got killers. Please don't shoot them at me "(Imaginative+ paraphrase). He had ranted onstage and proclaimed support for Trump for the second time in a week, and this time it seemed like a public breakdown – he did not finish the act. He canceled the remaining 21 concerts of his tour the next day, citing tiredness, and spent the next eight days in the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. Pusha T, the president of GOOD music, revealed in an interview in February 2017 that West was working on a new album. Rumors about the album's progress persisted, with some stories claiming that the Grammy winner had sought creative inspiration in the Rockies of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. With the announcement that he was authoring a philosophy-themed book, Break the Simulation, in April 2018, West re-entered the news cycle. Days later, he verified the rumors of new material in a rapid-fire sequence of tweets, announcing that he will release two albums in June, the second of which would feature longtime collaborator Kid Cudi. The artist then caused a sensation when his tweets turned to his admiration for President Donald Trump, referring to him as "my brother" and claiming that they shared "dragon energy," even sharing a selfie wearing Trump's "Make America Great Again" cap. West later clarified the situation by adding that he adored Hillary Clinton as well and that he didn't agree with everything the president stated. "I don't agree with anyone except myself 100 percent," he wrote. Read the full article

We’ve all been caught up in this at one point... the thought or belief that your next car, next romance, next job, next place, next trip, next purchase or program will somehow “finally make me happy”.  It’s referred to as 'destination addiction'. Make every effort to be happy right where you are in the here and now and it will allow happy to find YOU.  Every day is a process where we’re thinking and overthinking about 90 percent of the same thoughts as we did the day before.  As much as I can, I simply stop “thinking” and move in a flow/cadence/rhythm to the next movement as if I was in a song.  As much as you can - just for today - STOP thinking about the past, be fully present in this moment and lean towards your future.  I know this can help/contribute to you and your life!!! We're putting the final touches on our newest audio mp3 release MyBeliefWorks™ for Inspiring and Igniting Your Creative Spark, aka 'The Creatives'. This is for those of you who are artists, musicians, performers, writers, intuitive healers and empaths and it can assist you in getting unstuck, releasing brain fog and getting your creative juices flowing again! This audio WILL raise your vibration and attract new opportunities that could open up that next BIG opportunity for you!  Look for this to be released the first week of August! Here's what a few of the early listeners have said: "After listening to the recording, I felt all anxiety around my book melt away and was able to approach the page with neutrality and then curiosity and then positive excitement.  Pretty quickly I was actually being compulsive about writing---which is something I've always dreamed off.  Thanks Jimmy!" - Ann Pope "Just when it does not seem possible, Jimmy produces yet another stellar offering.  I had some sales calls to make and thought what needs to be more creative than a sales call?  The meditation was literally out of this world.  My body started vibrating shortly after the start of the program.  Jimmy has such a soothing voice that just instantly puts you into a calm hypnotic trance.  I just loved how I felt it was my higher self/soul being guided.  Tears rolled down my face at the end of the meditation...not crying..it was a knowing.  I received a profound idea for my sales calls immediately after the meditation which will truly be another great service to offer these potential clients. Thank you!" - Kathryn M.

From the Fish Box
"Hey Jimmy! I started the prayer service again 9 days ago to help my dad, as I was telling you he had just returned home from the hospital after suffering from a 3rd recurrence of cellulitis in 4 years, plus congestive heart failure. But once he was back home, the cellulitis came back even worse with his legs breaking out in huge blisters which became very red and raw and continued to leak fluid. This was going on for days and it looked like he was heading right back to the hospital when I contacted you. No joke, the very next day after the prayer service started he began feeling better! Things improved VERY quickly (so much so that 4 days into the prayer service the nurse who does his therapy commented on how quickly things were turning around)! He continues to make more progress every day, too. Thanks so much Jimmy, I have no doubt at all that you and Spirit made all the difference here! Just like it did for my mom years ago when she broke her hip! Thanks, just thanks for everything buddy!" ~Kevin M.

TGIWednesday ... are you caught up in destination addiction?
Tumblr media
TGIWednesday News

Serendipitous Melody 13/?
Summary: Everyone has dreams. You might dream of becoming an astronaut or teacher, or you might want to become a doctor and save as many lives you can. Emma Swan’s childhood dream was being a singer. But with life getting in the way and never finding the courage to overcome her fears, she never had a chance to follow it. That is until a little push from her friends lead her to cash on an opportunity; and, who knows, she might even get more than what she’d wished for.

A/N:   I’m back!! Exams season finished earlier than thought so here it is: a new chapter ready for you. And a pretty long one too *throws confetti around*. The plan is to write the next chapter before going on vacation but I guess we’ll see if the muse likes the idea too or not. Anyway, comments make my day so if you liked this chapter or if you’ve just started reading this story, don’t be shy! I’m a sweet potato you can ask around :’). Seriously, I love being shouted at. I am needy.
As always, thanks to @the-reason-to-sail-home and @londonsbridge, my wonderful friends and betas, for helping me with the editing and to all the CS Writers’ Hub ladies for all the sprints and brainstorming sessions. A special thank you goes to @mahstatins too for helping me deal with this beast

After Emma’s performance on Saturday, time passed in a bit of a blur. She understood why Killian had decided to vote for Elsa - the apologetic subtle glances he’d directed her were pretty self-explanatory - but that didn’t mean it hurt any less.
Killian had tried to talk to her after they were done with shooting, but with all the people busy with their tasks buzzing around them, she just bid him goodnight with a tight smile on her lips. He didn’t try to contact her again after that, at least, not too soon. She was almost expecting to get a text from him the morning after, but apparently, he just knew she needed time to be by herself. On Sunday, she had spent two solid hours stressing about why he hadn’t reached out to her yet. When twenty-four hours later he finally did, she just ignored his text for a while. He’d wanted to know if she would have liked to see the show with him that night, but she wasn’t sure if she was ready to face him again so soon, not by spending the evening with him anyway. So, when Emma got a call from her boss that day giving her a new case to work on, she let out a sigh of relief. Bringing her phone back from her ear, she quickly typed a reply to Killian.
E: I’m sorry but I can’t make it tonight. Gotta work.
Considering how much time had passed since he sent her the text, she was surprised to see the three dots appearing under her message.
K: No problem, love.
K: Please, be careful.
K: I know you are more than capable of defending yourself, but if you need any help, even just company during stakeouts, remember I’m just a phone call away.
Emma rolled her eyes at the screen. Always the gentleman, that man.
E: I always am and thanks, I’ll keep that in mind.
Days passed without any improvement on their situation. She would always find an excuse every time he suggested spending time together outside the studios. Even when they were there rehearsing the duet the mood was far from the one that there used to be during their lessons. And he missed his friend, his Swan. The last time he had seen her like that it was when she had been chasing that poor excuse of a man, Felix. And he was scared, so, so scared that had happened to her again, that the person Emma told him she was supposed to catch had hurt her either physically or psychologically just as Felix did.
As he came to that realization, blood drained from his face. He just hoped the reason she had been so distant lately was that she was mad at him, because he really didn’t want to see her so broken and fragile ever again. He just couldn’t.
“Hey, Jones!” A voice called behind him as he was finishing collecting his stuff after rehearsals with both Emma and Elsa and a long day at the studios.
“Good morning Lady Bell,” he greeted her, only giving a brief glance in the general direction of the door. She was standing on the threshold, her side laying against the doorframe, wearing her characteristic old, faded Pink Floyd’s tee and with a messy bun on the top of her head.
Tink wrinkled her nose, “Don’t call me that.”
“Don’t call me Jones then,” he answered back playfully, as he got closer to her putting a guitar away in the process, “You only do that when you’ve had a few libations and it’s been a while since we both drank that much alcohol.”
“Well, you’ve all been busy lately. We all have.” She said, giving him a weird look as they left the room and walked down the corridor, “I was talking about it with the guys earlier and we decided it’s high time we went out again. You know, like old times.”
Killian rose his eyebrows in surprise, “That sounds lovely.”
“You are game then?” She asked casually, “No pretty blonde to pillage and plunder or whatever you pirate types are up to these days?”
“I- I am,” he stuttered. Did she know about him and Emma? Not that there was a ‘him and Emma’ anyway, but their relationship was much more than what it was supposed to be. And even if it was, how could Tink know anyway? They had been careful. Perhaps someone had told her? Did she see them somewhere? But most importantly, did anyone else know?
“I- There isn’t a- Why are you asking?” Killian finally managed to spit out as he moved his hand up to rub the back of his neck.
Tink eyed him curiously for a moment, taken aback by his reaction. However, she just brushed it off, giving a playful push on his arm as they got outside and walked towards their cars, “I was just joking, Killian. I know I’m the only blonde in your life.”
Killian laughed nervously at that and said, swiftly changing subject, “Have you guys already decided when we’ll go out?”
“If you count ‘someday around next week’ a solid decision then yes,” she joked as they approached her shiny new BMW, “Otherwise…”
“Why does this not surprise me? It’s not like we ever decide to do anything last minute.”
“Of course not, we are responsible people,” Tink snorted, not able to keep a straight face anymore.
“Oh, definitely,” Killian nodded with a grin. He had missed hanging out with his friends. Working on Enchanted while also doing their job as musicians, left all of them with just enough time to spend their time with their significant other and family - if there were any, of course. But he had none of those. No family, not in quite a while, and the woman he was in love with was his not only his best friend, but also a contestant.
He didn’t have the time to dive into the fact that he had just accidentally admitted to himself the depth of his feelings for Emma, because Tink spoke again.
“Don’t tell the others but, you know Killian, I’ve kinda missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too,” he admitted, caressing her arm before giving her a quick peck on the cheek, “It’s late. Go home, Tink. I’m sure Jefferson is waiting for you.”
“Yeah, he is.” Tink blushed, “Good night, Killian.”
As she sat on the driver’s seat, Killian shut the car door behind her. While the sky tinged pink as the sun set, Killian watched her drive towards the studios’ gates. He may have forgotten what it would feel like coming home to a loved one after a long day at work, but he could feel the joy radiating from her when he mentioned her boyfriend. They’d managed to keep their relationship secret for months, to protect Jefferson daughter, Grace, from the spotlight. And even after she had announced it to the world, Tink made herself clear that she wanted to keep her private life just as it was: private. Everyone understood that, fans and even journalists, so why wouldn’t this work for him and Emma too? If he wanted to keep her in his life - and he certainly did, even if that meant keeping his feelings for her by himself and remaining just friends - then he had to fight for it. She probably didn’t realize it, but just by being herself she was putting him back together, piece by piece, day after day, healing the scars cutting through his heart with only a smile. And he hoped that it was the same for her too.
A week passed and nothing had changed.
She felt a bit childish at holding a grudge for that long over something as trivial as not getting Killian’s vote last week, but it wasn’t that simple. He had been right, after all. Honestly, she was surprised no one - besides Elsa - seemed to notice or question their atypical relationship. But still, it was too risky for them to keep that up. Both their careers (well his career and her future hypothetical one) and their reputations were at stake.
So she avoided him as much as she could. And she felt horrible about it, she really did. She could see the hurt he tried so hard to conceal in his eyes during rehearsals; she could almost hear the disappointment in his voice in all the ‘Oh it’s okay’s and ‘No problem, love’s he texted her whenever she turned him down.
It’s for the best, she used to tell herself. But no matter how many times she repeated those words in her head, keeping her distance from him didn’t get any easier.
Dammit, she was hurting too! She missed her best friend so much it hurt. Yes, she had Ruby and David and Mary Margaret, but it was not the same. Killian could - as he so proudly liked to affirm - read her so easily it was almost scary. And he was as much of an open book as she was for him too.
Rehearsals in particular were absolutely the worst.
There definitely wasn’t any goofing around and never ending fits of laughter. No innuendos (well not many anyway; the man clearly couldn’t restrain himself sometimes), no terrible puns, no babbling incoherently at the mic. They were tense, walking on eggshells around each other both when singing and when discussing their song. And you could hear this new uneasiness between them in their performance too. She knew that. He knew that. But no matter how much they tried, they couldn’t recreate artificially something that wasn’t there anymore. Not without exposing themselves, by baring their souls and forgetting anything had ever happened.
It had been a Monday (and Emma hated Mondays) when, while another fruitless rehearsal came to an end for her, Elsa walked in the room, greeting them both with a warm smile on her lips. After muttering a ‘hello’, both Emma and Killian’s eyes followed her as she plopped on the couch to revise the lyrics of her duet.
“I’ll just -,” Emma started, putting her sheet music back into her bag, eyes focused on everywhere but his, “I’ll just go then.”
She was marching to the door when she heard the soft and quick thuds of Killian’s feet on the parquet flooring right behind her.
“Emma, wait! Could I please have a word with you?” He glanced over his back where Elsa was watching them curiously before adding in a whisper, “In private.”
Not trusting her voice, she nodded, eyes anxiously darting around.
“Thank you, love,” Killian said softly. He then turned around to face Elsa, who tried to fake nonchalance. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
“Oh, sure! Take your time!” she replied quickly with a shrug, sending Emma a piercing look as if to say ‘We are so gonna talk later, girl’.
Killian opened the door, holding it for Emma as he said, a gesture of his hand following his words, “After you then, Swan.”
As soon as the door closed shut behind them, and after checking that there was no one around in the corridor, he shifted closer, the space between them getting almost nonexistent.
Emma almost choked on a gasp of air. She could feel his breath tingling her nose, and the scent of leather and faintly spiced cologne filled her nostrils.
“Are you alright, love?” he asked, an unreadable expression on his face. “The guy you were chasing, he didn’t hurt you did he? I know you are amazing at what you do and more than capable of defending yourself, but you’ve been distant and the last time I saw you like this…”
As realization dawned on her, a pang of guilt shot into her stomach. He thought the case she had been working on all those days back, the job she never told me she had been done with in a little over a day, had been like Felix’s all over again.
Taking her silence as affirmation, he paled as his eyes turned a steely blue with fury, searched hers frantically, as if he hoped to find there something that would tell him otherwise.
“Killian, calm down,” she told him, and then continued when she saw he was about to counter, “I’m fine. And before you ask me again, he didn’t hurt me, physically or otherwise. I caught him pretty quickly, actually. All it needed was a nice red dress, batting my eyelashes a bit and booting his car.”
Killian relaxed at that, breathing out a relieved giggle, which mixed with Emma’s nervous one.
Biting slightly her lower lip, she spoke again, “You are right though. I haven’t been myself lately, but after last week -” She trailed off, “I know it sounds childish but, even though I understood your reasons, and even though Elsa is a friend, I was a bit mad that you preferred giving your vote to her at first. But then I took a bit of time to think about what you said back then and you were right. We can’t keep this up, it’s just too risky. For the both of us.”
Emma took a deep breath, looking directly at him before lowering her gaze, as she ended her thought with a whisper, “I just… Maybe it’s better if we spend some time apart, Killian.”
“Emma, no…” Dumbfounded, Killian reached for her hand, his tone almost pleading.
Emma pulled it back quickly, but not fast enough to prevent his fingers brushing against hers, sending a spark of electricity running down her spine. Keeping her eyes on her feet, she tightened her grip on her purse in an attempt to give herself some strength. And she then walked past him, an apology barely escaping the prison of her lips; his name dying on the tip of her tongue.
Mondays did indeed suck. If she needed any proof, well, this was it.
Killian hated Wednesdays. He always had, ever since he was a child. If you asked around, most people would tell you that they hated Mondays the most. Even though the events of that week might have made him reconsider, he was still headset on his opinion. Wednesdays were just too far away from both the excitement of the beginning of a new week and from the relief that only the approaching weekend could give. In hindsight, judging by how the week had started for him, he could have predicted that that Wednesday would have been as bad as the previous forty-eight hours, but honestly, he didn’t think things could get any worse than they already were.
He had been so wrong.
It all started when he got a call first thing in the morning from Regina telling him - well, more shouting than telling - that there had been a change of plans and he had to get his “leather-panted ass to the studios and do the damn promotional shoots”. And that’s how he spent hours standing in front of a bright blue screen under a set of bright white lights, as a photographer snapped picture after picture of him, telling him to tilt his head just so and more ridiculous things.
By the time he got home, he barely had the time to shower that his phone went off again. Groaning, he swiped his thumb on the screen of his phone and put it on speaker so that he could freely look for something to wear for dinner with Robin and the girls. Ariel had gotten a reservation in one of those few fancy restaurants that got so popular among celebrities in LA because they wouldn’t allow any paparazzi to snap pictures of their customers while inside. She also invited Belle to tag along, which she happily agreed to.
“Killian! Oh, thank God you answered!” Tink’s exasperated voice came from his phone from where he had dropped it on his bed.
“Good evening, lass.”
“Hey. I need a favor for tonight.”
“Well you know I’m always up to do a favor or two to a beautiful woman like you,” he snickered, putting out of the closet a plain white shirt and a black vest.
“Not like that, you pervert!” She laughed, “There was an emergency at the hospital and Jeff had to go, but his car is at the mechanic so he had to take mine. Could you by any chance give me a lift?”
“Of course. Have you found anyone to watch over Grace yet? Because if not you could try ask Regina. I’m sure the lass will love hanging around with Henry.”
“That’s a great idea! I’ll call her then.”
“If that’s alright with you, I’ll be there in about an hour. How does that sound?” He asked fishing a pair of socks from the drawer.
“Perfect. Thank you, Killian,” Tink said before closing the call.
Killian took a look at the watch and then at the pile of clothes he threw on his bed as he passed a towel on his still damp hair.
Great, he thought, now I have even less time than before.
Surprisingly, both he and Tink managed to arrive just on time.
The place was as posh as he remembered, with black mirror-like walls and soft dim lights illuminating the room, but the food was even better. After some initial awkwardness, Belle fit right in with them, asking questions to them all and listening to Robin’s ridiculous stories (“Remember when a couple of fangirls approached me after one of your concerts Ariel, only to ask me if I could introduce them to Killian?” “Actually I don’t.” “What do you mean you don’t?!”). Killian hadn’t had that much fun since… Well, since the time Emma spent the day - and then the next -   with him. He couldn’t forget the spark in her eyes and the way the genuine, happy smile resting on her face seemed to illuminate the room as they watched Disney movies together.
Speaking of Emma, the fact that none of them had asked him about her yet was equally a concern and a relief. Didn’t they really notice anything? Why weren’t they pestering him with questions?
“Mate?” Robin called him, waking him up from his stupor, “Did you hear anything of what she said?”
“Oh, no. I’m sorry. What was the question?”
“I was wondering how Emma was?” Belle asked kindly again, “The show is almost over and I’ve never had the opportunity to actually talk to her. And she always seems so, I don’t know, distant?”
Killian froze.
“She’s truly amazing,” he started after taking a few moments to think what to say and how, “She’s funny, compassionate and, let me tell you, she has a hell of a punch, but she doesn’t trust people easily. It took me a while to gain her trust. Actually, at the beginning we didn’t really get along, but I’m glad we went over that.”
He was so busy weighing up each word before it escaped his mouth, that he didn’t notice the fond smile that appeared on his lips as he talked.
Belle didn’t miss it though and she observed, “You sound like you know her pretty well.”
“Well yes, she’s a friend,” Killian told her right away without thinking. Realizing what he had said, he felt the tips of his ears turning red. “I mean, by now I consider both her and Elsa a friend,” he stammered, trying to explain himself, “But Emma… I’d love to keep her around after all of this will be over, that’s all.”
He tried to ignore the pointed looks both Tink and Robin were giving him, but it was hard with the silence that had fallen after he spoke.
“Maybe we should get going,” Ariel suggested, breaking the silence as she took a glance at the horde of photographers that was starting to form behind the restaurant’s doors.
By the time they got ready to leave though, exiting the building without making much of a scene had been impossible. Killian and Tink were the first to get outside, his hand falling automatically on the lower of her back to guide her through the crowd as Robin followed them shortly with Ariel and Belle. Flashes were going off nonstop, pics were snapped and questions fired at them. It was disorienting and overwhelming.
As soon as both of them got inside the car though, they let out a relieved sigh, before following their friends’ cars out of the parking lot.
During the drive back and the rest of the night until he fell asleep, Killian prayed he wouldn’t wake up to any twisted articles about that night. It had been just a dinner with friends and colleagues, but he had been under the spotlight long enough to know how this world worked. However, a little hope never hurt anyone.
When the next morning he checked his phone though, he groaned. He had been right. Wednesdays did indeed suck more than Mondays.
After getting back home at three in the morning the previous night thanks to a last minute job her boss had put her on, the only thing Emma wanted to do on her conveniently scheduled morning off was sleeping. But of course, she got woken up far too early for her liking by someone banging at her door. Groaning, she took the pillow next to her head and she put it on top of her face to muffle the noise in the vain hope whoever it was would go away.
Suddenly the knocking stopped, only to be followed by the fumbling of keys against the lock.
“Emma, it’s me!” Mary Margaret shouted, closing the door behind her.
Emma sighed and moaned with the voice still rusty from sleep, putting the pillow back in its place, “Lemme sleep!”
“There you are,” her friend exclaimed, unceremoniously entering her bedroom and switching on the lights.
Breathing out another sigh, Emma winched at the sudden change of light.
“What are you doing here Mary Margaret?”
“Have you checked Twitter yet? Because if you haven’t, then just stay away from it. Don’t look at gossip magazines either,” she said quickly.
“I don’t - What..” Emma frowned, confused, “You’ve literally just woken me up, how could I possibly have checked Twitter or anything else? And why should I stay away from the Internet?”
“Oh, right. Well just don’t look okay?”
“No. What is it?” Emma pushed, taking Mary Margaret’s hand and pulling her down to sit with her on the bed.
“It’s about Killian.”
Emma’s eyes widened, taking her phone to check for any messages from him, “Did anything happen? Is he okay?”
“He’s fine Emma, calm down.” She reassured her, putting a hand on her shoulder, “You are going to look anyway, aren’t you?”
Emma just nodded and watched her friend pulling reluctantly her phone from her purse.
“It’s just, you’ve been a bit off in the last few days and you’ve stopped mentioning Killian at all. I don’t know what happened and if you don’t want to tell me I won’t ask, but you seemed pretty close and now with this…” she babbled, finally handing Emma her phone to see.
It was an article on one of those trashy magazines. Big pink flashy letters screamed at her ‘Has the Fairy found her Pirate? Scroll down to find out the latest Enchanted scoop’. There were pictures under that. Lots of them. They were all of Killian and Tink, she dressed in a skintight dark green dress and him in a tux. In some he was helping her out his car, in others, he had his hand on her back as they left a restaurant. There were also older pictures of them talking in the studios’ parking lot and of him kissing her cheek.
“It might be nothing, you know,” Mary Margaret said softly but Emma ignored her.
She skimmed through the article instead, the words barely registering into her head. It said something about the blurry picture of Emma and Killian at the coffee shop being actually a picture of him and Tink since he’d never commented anything on the identity of that woman. It talked about a ‘secret boyfriend’ and how close Tink and Killian always were. Emma felt sick.
“Emma? Are you alright?” Mary Margaret asked, worried by her silence.
No, she wasn’t alright. She was hurt, she was jealous and she was scared because she shouldn’t be feeling like this. He was her friend, nothing more. He couldn’t be anything more. But apparently that wasn’t enough to prevent her from developing feelings for him.
Giving the phone back to Mary Margaret, she just shook her head.
“Oh honey,” she whispered, taking Emma in her arms, “I’m sure there’s an explanation. Everything will be alright.”
Emma had never thought there would be a day worse than Monday, but apparently, it had just turned out that Thursdays were possibly even worse.

Blog #13: POP! Reflection // Jessica Rahel
May 11, 2017
Tumblr media
On Tuesday, May 9th, we did our POP show with the other AAS 218 class. POP stands for Producing Our Power, which I think really fits what the performances in the show are about. I think it is about producing and earning the power that was not handed to us in the first place. Whether it be our age, the color of our skin, the languages we speak, our gender, or the way we present ourselves, there are people who look down on us. There are people who do not see us the way we see each ourselves and each other. Each and every one of us know our own strengths and weaknesses. POP was a way to express ourselves and to step outside our comfort zone.
Before POP, I was really clueless as to what I wanted to do. Because it is my last semester of college, I really wanted to take it easy for POP and do something that I’m comfortable with, like play the piano as background music or be an extra in a video. On the other hand, I was also very inspired by everyone in class to go all out for POP. It’s my last semester after all. If not now, then when? I felt conflicted.
I ended up going all out.
I ended up doing something that I’ve always wanted to do since I was younger. To star in a music video and record a cover of a song.
Our POP group, DNA, made a complete remake of the song and music video of the song “Awake” by Jin of BTS. I wrote a really long blog post about how I came up with the idea to remake this song, which you can read about here. I’ll write a shorter version of the story here anyway. I listened to the song for the first time at 4am in the morning on a Thursday (April 6), came up with the idea at 1pm, and pitched the idea to my group in class at 4pm. It was a really impulsive decision since everything happened within the span of less than 12 hours. I could not even keep up with myself that day. My excitement level drained my energy so much that I asked myself that night, “What the hell did I get myself into?” Here’s what I got myself into:
1. After forming our groups, I had to switch mindsets. I had to go from “I just want to take it easy” to “LET’S DO SOMETHING NEW!”
2. I re-learned how to breathe properly in order to sing properly with my old choir teacher, Rosa Ng.
3. I learned how to use a software that composes music. I’ve never done that before. I’ve always composed music on paper. Composing music on a computer felt so professional to me.
4. I learned that viola players read music in what is called an “alto clef”. I didn’t know what an alto clef was until this project happened. I didn’t know that such thing exists aside from treble and bass clefs. Thanks, KC, my friend who is an orchestra director, for telling me about the alto clef BEFORE I composed the viola part to the treble clef!
5. I experienced that feeling of being stuck in a recording studio for 5 hours, fueled by boba, water, and fries.
6. I started paying attention to how K-Pop males have their makeup done (I just wanted to look like Jin ok…)
7. I learned how to wear white. That’s considered a miracle, to those who personally know me.
8. I learned more ways on how one can move the camera to create beautiful shots. Thanks, Floris.
9. I experienced a wave of disappointment after realizing that we won’t be able to use any of the viola parts that we recorded. I worked so hard to compose it and even learned a new clef.
10. I got back on my feet after that disappointment and took it as a learning experience. I got to compose music for the viola! If I need to compose for a viola part in the future, I now know what to do.
11. I learned how to accept the things that I can’t change and change the things that I can.
12. I learned to let go and hand over big responsibilities. In the past semesters, I’ve always taken the big responsibilities so that I don’t have to worry about other people messing up. This semester, I had to leave it to the more experienced people and let it go. It was hard at first, but I finally convinced myself to just let go and focus on doing my part, which was to compose the music and look pretty for the music video.
13. I learned that I would rather die than have my group members skip a meal.
14. I am still learning that not everything has to be perfect.
15. I got some basic Mandarin lessons (IN COLLEGE) from “Professors” Hu (Chao) and Cheng (Peter).
16. I got to sing in Korean and Mandarin!
The end result:
youtube
Originally, I chose this song because I felt the lyrics when I listened to it at 4am that one morning. The chorus, “Maybe I, I could never fly… but I will still struggle and fight” really stood out to me. I always feel this way. I don’t think I’ll ever reach the “level” of where some of my friends are, but at least I can try to. My friends are earning higher degrees in college while I’m here graduating with a bachelor’s degree. I’m average in playing piano. I’m average at a lot of things. This could be due to how I’ve been spreading myself too thin throughout college. I did a lot of things, but I was average. I learned a lot of things, but I’m still average. I don’t stand out from the crowd, because I’m average.
To relate this to the concepts we learned in class, we decided to make this song about Asian-American success. What defines success? Is it becoming an accountant? Lawyer? Doctor? What about becoming a teacher and inspire children to be the best? A professional musician? A YouTuber? As Asian-Americans, we feel like we have to follow the crowd of other Asian-Americans. Our parents and society expect us to achieve a higher education. They expect us to become nurses, doctors, lawyers, or working in business. In the music video, I had 4 occupations: doctor, marketer, pianist, and a photographer. Other people expect us to become doctors or work in business. However, becoming and musician or a photographer is a big risk because it’s very hard for us Asian-Americans to succeed in those areas.
What about our own dreams? This song talks about how even if we don’t feel like we’re enough and that we feel lost in life, we can still struggle and fight for our own sake. It’s not too late. The word “awake” in this song, in my opinion, means that we are aware of who we are: not good enough. But we still keep going and run a bit more. It’s okay to not be what our parents or society expects us to be. Their meaning of “success” can mean “failure” to us. If we are rich and successful in someone else’s eyes yet we are unhappy, our success means nothing. If we are still seen as a failure in their eyes but successful and happy in our own eyes, then we have succeeded nonetheless.
This project is a literal example of how I relate to this song. I don’t know how to sing, but I’m going to try. I don’t really know how to compose music, but I’m going to try. I’m not that pretty, but I’m going to try to look pretty. None of us are professionals, but we did it. And we succeeded.
I love how everyone brought something to the plate. At first, I was concerned that not everyone will contribute because of the limited roles that I had written down. I wanted to be the only singer at first, but that wouldn’t include everyone else. Eventually, we added more singers- Lucy, Seoyoung, Haruka, and even Chao! I think Lucy’s voice stood out the most. She has no problem reaching those high notes that everyone usually struggles with. Seoyoung and Haruka are also really good, even though they said they can’t reach the higher notes. They have such beautiful and distinct voices. Chao honestly wasn’t that bad when he is serious about singing. When I heard him sing prior to recording, he wasn’t serious about it so he didn’t sound very good to my ears. I thought that was how he really sings, which was why I hesitated to put him on the track. However, putting him on the track gave the song a bit of humor because he’s the only male singer and the fact that a male suddenly sings at the end of the song. Peter and Chao helped greatly with translating part of the song to Mandarin and also starred in the music video. Eric helped Floris direct, and Floris put everything together. We all worked hard together and I’m so proud of everyone. Floris and I listened to the finished song in an Uber on the way back from a shoot. I was tearing up because it was so beautiful. Floris made everyone sound like little Sam Smiths (not really but close enough). I love the song and I love how we got to sing it for this class.
Tumblr media
Shoutout to Cornerstone for letting us use their recording studio! :D
I also enjoy the music video. We were inspired by the original music video and re-created some of the scenes, such as in the beginning when I took off the earphones, the hallway scenes, and the Polaroids. Ever since I discovered Fort Point with my friend last year, I started bringing my other friends there. It was like a secret place to me. Fort Point is a beautiful place with dark hallways and has a great view from the rooftop. It’s free admission, too! When I found out that Floris wanted to shoot there, I was THRILLED. That place means a lot to me and I’m glad that we got to shoot there. I also love the shots that she took of me. She made me look like Adele (again, not really since Adele is bae and I’m lame). I learned a lot from her and Eric, and hope to make my own content in the future one day.
There are also some things that we could have improved on. For example, we could have found a better person to sing the first and second verse. Even though I can reach those low notes doesn’t mean that I should. The recording doesn’t sound as good as me singing it out loud, but what’s done is done. I also didn’t compose the entire thing from scratch. The music at the beginning of the music video was taken from the original music video all the way until the first verse starts. So, the piano at the beginning wasn’t me, and the violin part also came straight from the original. Also, throughout the song, the violin part was taken from a Youtuber named Jun Sung Ahn since we couldn’t use Allayne’s viola recordings (it did not fit well with the song).  If I had known that we couldn’t use Allayne’s recordings, we could have found a violin player who can play for us. This was a learning experience where I had to tell myself to let it go. So what, those parts are not from scratch? We still did our best. The deadline was coming up soon. There was nothing much else that we can do. In terms of the music video, I honestly could have looked better. The loose hair strand in the beginning of the music video bothers me more than I should, even though no one cares other than me. We did a great job overall. That’s what really matters.
Special thanks (This is going to get real cheesy)
Thank you, Professor Irene Duller, for this opportunity for me to live my dream and express myself in a way that I never thought I would ever get to do in my college years.
Thank you, Kevin, Mav, and Khanh, for believing in us, encouraging us, and helping us keep up the progress throughout this project.
Thank you, Allayne, for learning the song and coming to the recording session.
Thank you, Uncle Harry, for taking the time off your workday to help us with the drums.
Thank you, KC, for teaching me more about orchestral music and helping me compose.
Thank you, Rosa, for being patient and teaching me how to sing again.
Thank you, my friends from outside this class, for your excitement, encouragement, and prayers.
Thank you, Troy (the only Wontonkatsu member who isn’t in our group) for your support for us and believing in us.
Thank you, DNA for all your hard work in making a dream of mine come to life.
POP Highlight
I loved every single moment of the show. I was really hungry and asked someone from the group chat to bring us food, and thankfully Chao saved the day with some bread and boba. First, I enjoyed Dreamer’s skit because Troy is in it, and seeing one of our own group members on stage gave me a proud big sister moment. In this skit, Troy was the main character’s friend and the supporting character. I think they did a really good job in touching upon a really touchy subject, which is depression, without overly exaggerating or offensive. I also enjoyed the fashion show. I could tell that they put in a lot of work putting together all the outfits. My favorite is Linh’s dress. I think it’s really pretty and feminine, and it looks like you can wear it to any kind of party without being overdressed or underdressed. And Dangerous Divas… I love how they stayed together as a group and kept their name. It just shows how powerful they are and what they can accomplish together. I recorded their entire performance because I love their dances so much. They did a really good job in showcasing what it means for women to be empowered. Shaolin Showdown was amazing. The spoken word guys were very powerful and their words really touched me. Allayne did a great job playing the viola in an intense fashion. The very last group ended the show with a brilliant dance performance that left everyone shook. We took photos afterward. It was an amazing night filled with lots of talent and fun.

The Power Of Creativity Summary | learn how to build lasting habits, face your fears, and change your life.
Print | Free Audiobook | Print(In)
This book is for new writers, musicians, filmmakers, artists and anyone who has ever asked questions like “How can I become more creative?” or, “How can I get more ideas?” or “How can I focus on my thoughts and just let them flow?” Through The Power Of Creativity Summary ill try to answer your questions. So let’s begin…..
The power of creativity infographic summary
The Mirror:
“We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.” – Anais Nin
Tweet
You and I have too many dreams, we both wanna achieve & have too many things but to want something & to be brave enough to pursue it are two different things.
Procrastination is the problem we all face. The problem is you are afraid to start, afraid to think big.
Once you reach a certain age you get caught up in the day to day job, other people start depending on you, worried about paying bills and conscious about what others will think about you. All these reasons hold you back from taking creative decisions and doing what you like.
All you have to do is just start small and keep improving each day with incremental changes.
The theory is nice but the practice is better
Moments Of Inspiration:
DREAMS!!! if you don’t know let me tell you all the masterpieces ever existed came from dreams. These are known as moments of inspiration.
For example, Paul McCartney wrote the song,” yesterday ” which came to him in his dream. He had no idea how wrote it. He just woke up one morning with the song in his head. Isn’t it cool.
Similarly, painter Salvador Dali preferred having a sweet sleep before working on his big ideas.
He wrote in his book,” in undertaking an important pictorial work which you are anxious to bring to successful completion and on which your heart is particularly set, you must before anything else begin it by sleeping as deeply, as soundly as possible for you to do”.
This doesn’t mean you’ll just sleep & keep waiting for the dream to inspire you or give you an idea. All these masters can do it cause they have fertilized the soil/brain and seeded their ideas long in advance.
The creative process is as much about preparation and good habits as it is about moments of inspiration. So focus on preparing yourself, creating good habits, make a schedule. – Bryan Collins

Sacrifice Non Essentials:
Stop wasting your time on useless things. You have to replace your bad habits with a good one
Are you willing to sacrifice tv, social media, trashy books, night outs??
Because when you sacrifice the non-essential parts of your day, you’ll gain the momentum you need to progress your big ideas.
Favorable Environment:
Remove everything from your workplace that distracts you (television, Games, magazines like that).
Cause willpower is finite and, trust me, you don’t wanna waste it on fighting with distractions. Leave clues like notes, bookmarks like that.
Be Efficient:
Both good & bad ideas appear at an unusual time and unusual places, like in the shower.
So you must be efficient in your daily routine.
That is why keep everything organized and easy to access, so you won’t waste time looking for pens, notes, etc.
Be Effective:
Set deadlines for your creative projects.
Turn up every single day to do what you meant to do and then stick to your routine. At the end of the month or so, review your routine.
Feed Your Subconscious:
Before going to bed read, write, or try to remember what work you did today.
Doing this will pass the idea to the subconscious, which will continue to work on the idea/thought while you are asleep.
Next morning try to remember what you dreamt & write it down quickly before it fades out of mind.
Reward Yourself:
To keep motivated yourself, mark small victories, like keeping a new creative routine or reaching a little milestone, etc, and reward yourself for it.
Doing this will build a mental link between your new routine and positive experiences.
Commit To Your Ideas:
Creativity doesn’t appear whenever you want.
You have to work every day, engage yourself in doing your craft, you have to be dedicated.
Turning up every single day builds the creative resources regarding your craft in your subconscious mind. This way you prepare your mind and body for your creative work.
Trace Your Creative Roots:
You can spend your life doing thousands of worthwhile creative goals/work. But the harsh reality of life( paying the bill, having a job, settling down, etc) complicates your ability to do what you want. As you get older, your chances of doing it go down.
Talent, hard work, opportunities are useless if you don’t know where you are going.
Purpose:
You can’t give your best if you don’t know,” why you are doing what you are doing”.
You have to educate yourself about what drives you & inspires you.
The purpose will guide you through the tough times. Find your guiding purpose!!
Mission Statement:
Most of the time you are so afraid of what people will think about you, you feel demotivated.
In such times you need a personal mission statement, which will keep you on track & keep reminding you why you do what you do.
Write your mission statement now!! Keep reviewing and updating your mission statement monthly.
Learn The Demands Of Your Craft & Audience:
You don’t have to care or worry about, what others think of you & your ideas. That’s the only way to know what your craft & audience wants.
Many great ideas are born because somebody had a problem they wanted to solve. But No one wants to invest their time, money, energy in creating a product/solution which no one wants.
That’s why instead of assuming what the audience wants, develop an early concept/prototype. Share it with your audience, get feedback, and use it to improve your product/Solution.
Start learning the fundamentals of your craft first. Keep track of your progress so you can know, how far you have come & how far you still have to keep going.
The lifelong practice is what separates amateurs from professionals & professionals from creative masters. – Bryan Collins

Find A Mentor:
The path to success is full of struggle & huddles. You’re not the only ones who struggle, want to think outside the box, needs the motivation to keep going or craves for critical feedback.
Almost everyone faces these problems and having someone or following someone who has completed the journey you are on will save your efforts, time & energy.
Having a mentor offers opportunities to learn creative skills faster & gain access to creative insights and resources. Mentor will show you how to avoid committing common mistakes and help you learn skills faster.
You will become more accomplished and creative if you have a mentor guiding you. There are two types of mentors, good mentors, and great mentors.
Good mentors are easy to find. Good mentors can be teachers, your friend, your colleagues who are more successful than you.
Great mentors are fewer and harder to come across. These are the people who motivate you, their work keeps inspiring you.
It doesn’t matter if your mentor is alive or not. Napoleon Hill suggested in his book, ” think and grow rich” to have an imaginary council of mentors.
Hill’s council included Edison, Charles Darwin, and 7 others. Similarly, you can also have imaginary mentors of your choice. Learn everything from their works, books, etc.
When you encounter a problem, ask yourself what would your mentor do, and act like that.
Strengthen Your Mind And Body:
Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional. – Haruki Murakami

One of the best ways to stay motivated, turn up every single day, and keep going is running and meditation. Meditation and exercise will help you embrace positive change in many different ways.
Meditation is a scientifically proven way to improve concentration and memory and also to make you smarter.
When you meditate you are able to focus more on tasks & fewer mood swings occur. If you are not able to meditate then you can try running. Running is a lot like meditation.
When you are passionate and working too hard on a project, it is very necessary to have a break, so your body and mind can relax.
When you are physically and mentally healthier, you are better able to concentrate on your work and ideas.

Side Project:
A musician must make music, an artist must paint, a poet must write if he is to be ultimately at peace with himself. – Abraham Maslow
Tweet
You can be only happy if you can express yourself by doing what you really like.
If your main gig isn’t giving you enough time or space to write, draw, paint or play if you spend your nine to five responding to the demands of others or if you work on the project only because they pay bills, then you need a side project.
When you are messing around, when it’s just for fun, when nobody gets hurt, paid or laid, it’s a side project.
When you are stuck, can’t make decisions, feel like procrastinating, at these times you can work on your side project and relax & have some fun doing what you like.
All the work, the research you do, during your side project
You never know when this side project becomes your main gig. This book was Bryan Collins’s side project which later turns out to be 3 parts book series.
Side projects help you procrastinate and still get things done.
They also help you create new habits without taking risks or investing a lot of time & money on a single idea.
Also switching from the main project to side project gives you much-needed break.
And don’t feel overwhelmed by the scale & ambition of your side project.
Look at your side project as an experiment, be bold, do things differently, allow yourself to fail.
Work on several things at a time, and you will connect them in exciting and unexpected ways.
What you practice for just an hour or day on your side project, can change your life in the future.
Go To War Against Your Fear:
There’s only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure. – Paula Coelho
Tweet
You don’t know if what you are doing, creating will have the potential to survive in the market, and each day is like a struggle while working on it.
Your fear of what people will think, hold you back.
You are afraid of starting, but you are even more afraid of being found out. That people will criticize you, your work, your ideas, that you are not good enough, etc.
Remember it’s really very important to turn up every single day and get things done.
Eliminate useless daily tasks & activities which waste your time and focus on creating creative habits. Make it a ritual so you perform it every single day without thinking.
Another thing which holds you back is self-doubt like, I am not good enough and all.
Accept negative self-talk for what it is. Just talk. – Bryan Collins
Tweet
The best way to avoid self-talk & get them out of your head is journaling or meditating or exercising.
Rejection/ failure is part of the process. Everyone who succeeds has to face Rejection/failure.
Start acting like a champion. Be confident & bold with your ideas, thoughts, and answers. Keep doing this and your success will be inevitable. If success were easy to accomplish then conquest wouldn’t worth it.
Passion:
“Passion!! Being crazy about something, doing something which makes you happy, is very important. Find your passion.
Once you find your passion, you’ll have the reason to get up every single day and create what you actually love. Passion will keep you going when nothing will.
Practice every single day even if you don’t feel like it.
The road ahead is long and winding, but you are bolder, stronger, and more powerful than you can imagine. – Bryan Collins
Tweet
I wish you luck. You can do it!!!!
Conclusion:
The biggest problem in your life: you are afraid of starting.
Begin your creative project after sleeping as deeply as possible.
Sacrifice useless activities & habits.
before sleeping think of the project, you working on. And write down every detail of your dreams the next morning.
Celebrate small victories by rewarding yourself.
Find your purpose!! Make a personal mission statement. These two things will serve you as a road map.
Don’t make assumptions about what your audience wants.
You will become more accomplished and creative if you have a mentor guiding you.
When you are physically and mentally healthier, you are better able to concentrate on your work and ideas.
Have a side project, which will make you feel happy, relaxed.
You are afraid of starting, but you are even more afraid of being found out.

My Musical Journey
Josh Wickins
Tumblr media
First off, I just want to say how truly excited I am to be part of the Volume 11 team. Being able to bring music content to the masses, as well as, sharing my passion with you all! To fully understand my music background, I have to bring it back to the beginning. My parents, and grandparents were always playing music in the house; singing, dancing, just having a good time and enjoying the music, it didn’t take my siblings and I long to jump into it and join them. Singing anything from Elvis, ABBA, Celine Dion, AC- DC, the list goes on and on. I think those moments started shaping my love for music.
My grandmother always had an acoustic guitar in her house, and I was always fascinated by it. I begged and pleaded for my Nana to let me try it and for her to teach me… so one fateful night, while my family was visiting her house; She finally let me play it. She ran me through the basics of reading sheet music and finger placement, and within minutes I was playing the songs. I can even remember the specific song, it was Amazing Grace, and that memory will be with me forever. My family was amazed at how fast I picked it up and a little while after that, they signed me up for private guitar lessons. I still have and use the first acoustic guitar my parents got me for my 10th birthday, it’s one of my most treasured possessions. From that moment on, learning songs, ripping tunes in my teacher’s basement studio, I knew this was what I was meant to do.
Since then, I have been always doing something with music, from just jamming and playing at home or with friends, to school bands and Sea Cadet bands playing the trumpet. Music was always the centerpiece of what I was doing.
Once I reached high school, things really started taking off; I befriended a lot of other musicians and people in various bands, I became that stereotypical high school band kid and I finally felt at home.
By 16, I was regularly attending shows, jamming with my friend's bands, at band practices, studios record songs and albums, playing shows.
Over the years, I’ve seen too many shows to count, and going out to them is still a huge part of my free time. Shows have been, and always will be, such a release for me; it is such an experience and extremely cathartic. I also am a bit of a fanboy when it comes to bands or artists I really like, I’m that guy that is trying to talk to the band members and just meet my idols face to face.
While music has always been my passion, it was not something I always pursued. I was always told to “find a real job”, or “that won’t make you any money”. So, I did what I thought was right, and started working, doing jobs I hate just to make money and just follow in line. After years of being miserable and feeling like the void in my life was getting bigger and bigger: It was time to make a change. I applied for Music Business Management, at Durham College, I got accepted, quit my job, and started this wonderful and scary journey to improve my life. It was finally time to do something for me.
Though this journey has just begun, I’ve already learned so much, especially about myself. To date, I have several business endeavors in the works, and with the help of this program and the knowledge, I’m gaining I hope that they will take off and I’ll become a household name in the music industry. I’m here to take the music world by storm, and no- one can stop me now. If you are ever feeling lost or stuck, my advice is: it’s never too late to change your life and chase your dreams. I’m living proof!

Interview // Jean-Michel Blais
Tumblr media
I interviewed Jean-Michel Blais for 7digital.
You’ve just come from Berlin. What were you up to there?
I met with Ableton. It’s interesting, because this whole album feels like a spectrum between the purest classical and electronics, so I met with Ableton to discuss what software is missing for classical pianists to use electronics. Like, how do we integrate that? I realised I know nothing, and that there’s always room for improvement and creativity and change.
A couple of years ago you worked with Montreal electronic musician, CFCF. How did that collaboration help you bridge the gap between your mostly-classical debut and this new, more electronics-focused second album?
It was a way of segueing. When I lived in Berlin, I was really interested in the relationship between minimal electronics and minimalist music, like that of Philip Glass. It’s interesting because you don’t consume them in the same context, but they share so much in the repetition, and in the trance they create. I’ve always been interested in this bridge, and Red Bull Music Academy and these other people in Berlin have been supporting the project for a year and a half now. They said, “Ok, CFCF and Jean-Michel: you guys meet, create a show.”
I think we met 10 times and we wrote seven songs and we recorded five, and that was the EP. It was not supposed to be an EP, just a show, and then people were like, “We want to hear that again,”so we were like, “Ok, let’s record it, then.” And really, Michael of CFCF is the guy that introduced me to software and plug-ins. I couldn’t differentiate a midi controller from a synthesiser a year and a half ago, which shows the limitation of a classical education. So CFCF helped me work that out, and with the new album he’s involved, because often I go to his place with my laptop like, “What should I do with that?” and he’s coaching me. Not in the composition side, but more like the production side. There are some really interesting pianists now, who play with software and programming, almost artificial intelligence. It’s just exciting.
You mentioned your classical training, but you were initially self-taught on the piano, right?
Yeah, and I started quite late. Usually classical pianists – in Canada at least – they get into the Conservatory around six years old because they’ve been pushed. That is not my story. There was an organ in the cellar of our house, and I started playing around with it. And I had this little keyboard where I could record and I started layering all those ideas of composition and improvisation. A friend of mine who had just moved into town, his mom has a piano at home and is a teacher, and that’s how I got started. She slowly introduced me to structure, like, “What about writing things down? And what about other people before you? What about this guy called Mozart?” She introduced me to classical work, preparing me for the moment where she was like, “Ok, now I think it’s time for you to move on. So I will prepare for you to get into the Conservatory.”
I got into the Conservatory at the age of 16, which is super late to get in. And I was super lucky because in the class there was someone who just left, and they took me not because I was good but because I had the potential to become good. It was amazing training but also I was so frustrated because I felt like I couldn’t explore everything I wanted in the music, so I quit playing piano for a year. And for 10 years I wasn’t really thinking about doing music just because I needed something concrete: I needed to help people, and give a meaning to my life. It really felt like music was this aristocratic, posh, bourgeois thing and I was like, “There’s people dying in Guatemala, so I’m gonna help them instead.” So that’s why I went to Guatemala and started working with kids in orphanages. I was travelling and searching myself a lot.
You were a teacher, right?
I was a special educator; working with children with special needs and behavioural difficulties. It really brought me to look at it as a systematic issue, because it’s political and it’s economical. That’s why I went to university: to come back and transform things as a teacher. I didn’t teach music at all. Mainly, I wanted to help my students to develop their own way to think about the role we play in society.
But so often I have people reach out to me, sad and depressed, saying, “Your music is helping me.” It’s common for musicians probably. And, in terms of connecting with people, I did a show in Paris a few days ago, and suddenly I just started challenging the audience, asking, “Can Parisians sit on the floor?” And they were so offended that they all sat. So you have, like, 600 people sitting and suddenly people started crying, diving into themselves. It was really beautiful, and then I realised it’s not about me; it’s about what create together, you know? There’s a need for it.
Are we right in thinking that music had therapeutic properties for you too, when you were growing up?
Yeah, when I was young, it started all of a sudden. It’s called Tourette Syndrome and it often comes with OCD and ADHD. There was a mix of the things that happened to me. I’m from a small town, almost a village, and there was no will to label [the condition] and buy pills or drugs for it. It was more like, “That’s how he is.” My friends were so patient with my tics or making noises. And we realised that when I was playing piano – from the moment I touched the keys to the moment I stopped – everything would stop. Like, no tics and my concentration was completely there. It was like magic. So I think piano played an important role in self-treatment.
And playing music is one thing, but composing and improvising is also like a diary. It’s expressing in a secret language concrete things that people won’t understand. Maybe that’s why I think sometimes that my music is talking to people, somehow? My song ‘Roses’, for example, is for a friend of mine whose mum passed away from cancer. You know how when someone passes away it’s hard to know what to say? Well the music came somehow. There’s hope and grief in there. So it’s like my music channels something else, or that I’m just a tool through which emotions can pass.
Have you played the song to your friend?
Yeah. Ooof. She wants everyone to hear it. For the album there’s a photo for each song, and for that song it’s her hands. I think each track [on the album] has a story. I was scared at one point when I started doing music, like, what about if I get tired of the songs? But people’s reactions make every night different. And I was scared not having more inspiration but now I realise that it’s ok because I don’t need to just talk about me. This album is much about other people and I’m really happy that it can work that way.
Do you see common themes running through Dans Ma Main? For sure. Because I discovered Ableton, I had insomnia for this week, and I almost composed everything in one week, at night. I think the record grasps this moment of truth of when you go to sleep. Like, there’s always this moment where you’re alone with yourself before you fall asleep, and that’s where you think. I think that’s where the album is set; in this moment of nice solitude and of truth.
And you know those moments when you start dreaming? A song like ‘Blind’, that’s what it encapsulates for me. It’s piano and then this weird synth comes in and suddenly you’re somewhere else, until the piano comes back and then you’re like, “What just happened?” I think the night-time feel is strong.
Another thing I loved about living in Berlin was the period from 5am to 7am, where the early workers are taking the same S-Bahn as the people who come home from partying, and they’re in a similar mood. I think it’s beautiful that the night brings together people from two extremes .
The song ‘Outsiders’ samples Jean-Michel Basquiat discussing anger. Can you tell us about your connection to Basquiat?
It’s interesting because quoting Basquiat is trendy somehow. But at the same time, how I got to know Basquiat was not because it was trendy. I was young and I searched for my name on Google and I found Jean-Michel Basquiat.
This quote is something beautiful. The silence after his words, brings me back to John Cage’s ‘Silence’. Silence is extremely powerful. Silence is music. And [Basquiat’s] way to not answer question implies, “Look at my paintings.” It’s like, why are you even asking him? What do you want from Basquiat? Taking everything from the inside? On the song, the piano comes in an answer somehow, and as something soothing. Art is there for expression when the words won’t come. When I was younger, music was my diary. Things I couldn’t say, and things I was living inside, I would transform into art. I think that’s what Basquiat did.
Having almost fallen into this career as a professional musician, what are your ambitions?
Instrumentally-speaking, the piano as an instrument has somehow stagnated and I think the instrument should be questioned and pushed beyond its limits, integrating digital and acoustic and analogue technology. Introducing digital music is really important for me because it feels like all these classical composers were always working with the finest, most technologically advanced instrument of their era. So why would I now work with old instruments? Also, coming from working with people as a special needs educator, in poorer districts, I don’t want to create something elitist or disconnected from people. I wish I could open those doors more.
But I’m so not an ambitious person. I mean, two years ago I was not playing piano. It sounds cheesy but if I had ambitions it would be to have the strength and the creativity and the courage and the time to keep this going up to where it could go.

Mental Music: Maintaining Motivation
By Lee Egerton
Staying Motivated can be one of the most difficult tasks especially when things aren’t going well. You may feel like sticking to something until you master it is the best policy, which it sometimes is, but doing the contrary can allow you to reach to the same goal. Discovering something new is, for me, one of the most underappreciated things this world, and, also in my opinion, one of the most beneficial things the world has to offer. Being open minded enough to try something new can open you up to a world of possibilities you may not otherwise experience. There are a number of ways to achieve your goals and is another way to develop character in your playing. In order to stimulate the mind enough so that progression happens quickly, we have to find our limits, balance, and inspirational triggers that keep us interested in the goals we are trying to achieve. Let’s take films for example. I like action movies. But if I saw a film that included a 3-hour fight scene I would get bored, as I would feel that the fighting lost its impact. The same rule applies to food. IF I eat too much of one food type I begin to find that food bland, and distasteful as I would become accustomed to the taste. So, if we do too much of one thing it becomes tedious and no longer stimulating. Therefore, when preparing practices, writing songs, gig set lists or producing music, it is vital that we have enough tricks up our sleeve to deliver the right move for the right occasion. Here are some methods you can try in your musical training that can increase your motivation and prevent boredom.
Changing Style/Genre
The amount of times I hear people tell me they don’t like a style of music because they find it boring is incredible. In particular, classical music is often brought up by people. I will always question people as to why this is as I find it interesting to know. The most common answer I have had to date is, ‘It’s boring’. In some cases, this may be the case. Not every piece of music can be everybody’s cup of tea. However, I am a firm believer that we can all learn something from it, and sometimes this so-called boredom, derives from a lack of understanding. The same as a jazz musician should take influence from the blues, I believe metal musicians, should look to classical music for inspiration, for the benefits it can have on their melodic, harmonic and dynamic ear. This can improve their ability to create ideas for solos, riffs and contrasting phrases. The heritage of any musical genre is a development of something before it. Merging different elements of each genre not only develops us as musicians but also develops our genre. The benefits of this are that you can begin to appreciate the strengths of musicians, expand your awareness, increase technical dexterity, grow your sense of character and make more definitive and creative decisions.
Change the context
You may have a very specific reason behind what you want to do. For example, when I was younger, I wanted to learn to sweep pick, because I had heard the technique used in some Trivium and Avenged Sevenfold songs. It was something I had never practiced in any other type of song. If I had have tried it on broken chords or found other songs that used the song until I had nailed the technique, and then began to build up speed, I may have been able to achieve it. But being stubborn and maybe slightly immature I never managed to achieve this. In hindsight, this is what I would have done, but hindsight is a wonderful thing, so I can only prepare things for my students, which are designed to encourage this kind of independent thought and these methods. Learning skills in a variety of different contexts can also develop a better understanding of the techniques and give them a purpose. Once again this is great for decision making, soloing and adds depth to your musical knowledge and Genre/style, giving you a much more rounded and broad skill set. The more you understand the uses for something, the more likely it is that you will achieve it.
Watch or show other people.
Watching other people playing something can give you a bigger scope of what you need to know. By watching someone do something, you can develop the understanding by asking questions that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to. This can be great for visual learners and also for developing the processes of different tasks. By watching others perform, we can observe the habits and practices that achieve the results we are aiming for in our individual goals. Observing good practice can jog the imagination and make you more attentive to your own practices and what habits are maybe aiding or preventing you from achieving your targets, or even add new and more purposeful habits to your armour, therefore eradicating any barriers from your performance.
On giving advice, you will be able to develop communication and be more focussed on how you are completing tasks, as your demonstrations will need clarity to transfer to the observing person(s). This gives you more incentive to be conscious of your own practice and ensure that you pay more attention to detail when you are practicing your preaches. For this your explanations will need to be direct, succinct, and clearly communicated, to allow the observer to be certain on how to properly apply the advice.
There are a number of different ways to do this. Videos on YouTube, listening to podcasts, reading articles or physically seeing other people in the flesh. When I was trying to learn my trade as a Guitar Teacher, I took lessons from a peer to see how he taught me and that enabled me to see the disciplines and how to explain them in a people friendly way. However, it is also important to question the practices to understand the point behind the exercise being demonstrated. From this point on, I am still developing other aspects of my teaching from observing the students and listening to audio books on motivation, communication, relaxation and persuasion. Notice how there is a range of research and not just coming from one source as the ideas you are looking for may link to other areas, so be sure to create clarity and open your mind to various resources and practices.
Set reminders and Developing habits.
Reminding yourself of the purpose of your practice is always a good way to stay motivated. Why did I want to do this? What do the results look like? What feelings do I want to generate? What type of person will I be if I achieve this? And sometimes (not always) How will others perceive this personality? Give your time and effort to these questions and consistently question them to remind you of your progress and the purposes behind the hard work. Generating and creating clarity of your goals are a brilliant way to set your mind straight and stay focussed on working towards them. Set an alarm 3 times a day to make sure you are aware of what your goals are. Write down daily tasks for yourself that work towards them so you can keep track of your progress. Surround yourself in the environments that will help them. When you practice your instrument, set practice routines that will relate to your goals in some way. Write check lists and tick them off. Or keep some sort of spreadsheet that helps you to analyse what areas you need to develop rather than just focussing on your strengths.
It is important to keep the targets achievable and challenging to build both strength and positivity. Don’t see things that you have not yet mastered as being a negative thing, we can’t do everything. But by creating the right environment, mind set and understanding, you can then improve by way of habit, routine, and structured practice. A friend of mine recently said ‘Motivation is nothing, Discipline is everything’. By developing the appropriate habits and working hard to achieve tasks that are related to your goals and aspirations, you are already one step closer to achieving your targets. Anything that can’t be done now, can be improved. That is something you will need to remember when you are practicing.
Conclusion
To finish off the penultimate episode if you like, motivation is a major part to success as it is the beginning of all success. It’s the thing that encourages the development of the individual and the thing that keeps us going when we feel at our lowest. It is the thing that reminds us of our purpose and gets us out of bed. So keep reminding yourself that you do have something to fight for. Believe that you do have goals and aspirations and believe that they are achievable. Think big and dream even bigger. Chase the dreams and reach for the sky. But don’t ever forget who you are, how far you have come and what you have already achieved in your life, and don’t ever stop yourself from achieving more. Your life is yours to live, and it is up to you to own what you have. Thanks again for taking the time to read this blog and I hope that they are helping.
