While I’m thinking about Iathrim-Dwarvish cultural exchange, let me present an AU:

Instead of a physical altercation over the nauglamir-silmaril, the dwarves just... withdraw all of their services from Doriath. Conclusively. Doriath is now under dwarven boycott until they return stolen cultural artifacts and re-negotiate labor prices.

Do the Iathrim know how maintain Menegroth on their own? I doubt it! A handful might have the skills, but I doubt there are enough of them to maintain the whole city. See also: jewelry manufacture, access to metals, and (with Nargothrond gone) access to... any trade at all.
