what do the dragons in cookie run ovenbreaj do when they're in heat... and they don't have a partner yet (they havent met s/o)
Finds someone to help them out — they either choose a devoted mortal worshipper of theirs that they don’t care about breaking, or they find another, weaker, dragon that’s willing to help them deal with their heat.
-> ananas, lotus, lychee
Deals with it on their own — maybe they’re too prideful to ask for help, or maybe their standards are just too high, but either way they prefer to deal with their heats on their own.
-> longan, pitaya

AN: Very into yandere core rn, idk why. 🤷‍♀️
Tumblr media
Oneshot
Warnings: Yandere, kind of willing reader, implied blood
-Be Mine-
You carefully ran a hand over the delicate envelope, admiring how the pretty off-white seemed to glow in the daylight.
It was laced with the same scent it always had as well. A very feint sweet smell would fill up the room.
It looked so pristine that, if you hadn't already known better, you would have thought it was completely ordinary.
That was far from the truth, though.
These letters has been appearing at your door none stop, all signed with the same name being "Your true love".
You weren't dating anybody though.
What's weirder is that they had all been written with an odd ink.
A bloodied red.
Maybe you should have been more concerned, but you weren't.
The way the ink had dried, how it felt against your finger as you began to gently trace the letters.
The heavenly white accompanied by that deep red was truely a sight to behold, and you couldn't help but admire the letter for hours upon hours.
But it had only two words on it.
Two small words in the center of the page.
"Be Mine."
This was by far the shortest letter you had received.
But that didn't make it any less intriguing.
Your hazy eyes re-read those words over and over again.
You should have been concerned with all of the concerning the letters would say.
But the only concern you had was if you'd ever be able to meet this mysterious lover.
Maybe it's about time you write back a response.

Dragon Lily has a dark side? Or something like that?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don't forget that she is still Longan's daughter.
She may be the most pious and sweetest of her lineage, but she still has thorns in her.
A beautiful flower with such poisonous thorns inside.
Here are a few facts about Lily that I would like to share!
The tip of Lily's tail has a flower, usually it is closed, but when it opens it is able to expel a sleepy gas, along with a large thorn that secretes lethal poison, so if someone tries to hurt her, they fall asleep or die right there.
Lily's crown has part of Longan's armor, specifically those two things on the sides of their head (you know, the part that Pitaya managed to hit), her crown was made by the dragons, recognizing her as their leader and ruler (even though she doesn't like the crown.)
Lily is able to create butterflies, they are white in color and radiate a light green light, just like Longan's eyes, those butterflies act as Lily's eyes, helping her to see further and communicate with those far away from her.
Lily's thorns act like the roots of her father, Millennial Tree, allowing her to feel and give her power to others, as well as take it away, but the downside of the thorns is that they also hurt her.
Lily was alone for the next few years of her crowning, as her father was busy re-establishing order and her aunt and uncle put themselves into hibernation, leaving her alone with her regrets about killing her parent.

tbh i like to think that whenever longan and timey cant see each other they write love letters to each other and theres prob lots of those.
i feel like timekeeper has a neat handwriting and takes her time to pour their heart out. also i bet she uses half the space in the tbd office to store the love letters she got or items that remind them of longan. also i feel like timekeeper re-reads old love letters over and over.
longan’s handwriting is probably a bit messy, but theyll get the hang of it. i like to think they pull all nighters to write the letters, making sure that everything looks good and that they cant mean anything else that could be wrong. i feel like they cherish keepie’s letters like treasures. they definitely still write with ink and a feather im telling u(+those yellowish papers if u get what i mean)
in conclusion: they are so madly in love

So, I felt like re-drawing DragoBond. It's pretty obvious he's supposed to be related to Longan dragon in this version.
Fell really far from the tree on that one, ey? I'm still debating on some things but I'm pretty happy with this design currently.
His scales are a rare hybrid of sea and mountain dragon scales. Light and flexable enough for fast water travel but also extremely tough. They also have a slight opalessent coloring. Is he being hunted by dragon hunters? Abslo-fucking-lutely.

Vampire is caring and Mango is stressed post
So let's take a look at Vampire's dream over here. it's about fucking labor
Tumblr media
let's just take in note that this is his dream. he wants everyone to have fun, stop being so worked up over their jobs and stuff
lets take in note that these cookies are workaholics techinally
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pastry, Almond, Madeleine, Espresso, Beet, Blackberry and Sparkling. They work a lot now don't they? Vampire wants them to get rest,
Tumblr media
Hence them agreeing with Vampire he wants them to get rest SO bad that they''re in his dream, agreeing that they should get rest and (stop) working
He ACTUALLY cares for them, and dreams are usually based on thoughts and experiences Blackberry works as a maid 24/7, I think you can tell by Espresso and Almond, Sparkling Madeleine and Beet are overworked in some way
Them working is getting more and more worrying throughout their entire life, and THOSE are Vampire's thoughts, the reason they're in his dream is vise versa
now to the mango part? im guessing mango doesn't really think this in the real world but he definitely does that
Tumblr media
mango has a hard time being a tour guide, hence people thinking his life is happy and all that when this POOR child has been into way too many situations (ananas update, longan update, durianeers ETC)
NOW this is one of his only lines that proves shit
Tumblr media
yes he surely loves his job but this poor kid is struggling,
Tumblr media
he talks alot and that's actually something you- what am I doing nvm ignore this post
they possessed me again

re: tag, aye yes can eat seed!!! here dried ones easier find than fresh ones in its pod thing
Tumblr media
[id: picture of 2 lotus seed pod. they green n circular on top with seeds scattered, n round at bottom. end id]
u peel seed out of spongy pod, then peel green skin off, n u get white lotus seed!! in it there green “sprout” thing that look like mini leek (lol), n that bitter (lotus seed said have medicinal properties n forgot if it specifically this bitter part that give that property) so am usually,,, take that out. without it it taste… fresh. am bad at describe n also been while since ate it.
lotus seed esp dried lotus seed can use brew water (common combo here is with dried longan + dried dates), make porridge (e.g. 8 treasure porridge), cook with, etc!
Can you tell us about the lotus root?
They're a really popular vegetable in Asia! The rhizome of a lotus flower is edible and has like... air pockets in the middle! I really like it because it absorbs the flavor of what you cook it in and stays crunchy!
Here's a more in depth description:
I buy it in already peeled, blanched, and sliced packets! I put the rest in a Pyrex glass dish with a lid along with the liquid in the packet and it lasts for a long time in the fridge so I can take a handful out to put in stuff. Looks like this:

Longan steals a child and pass him as their own- The AU.
Couldn't stop thinking about this idea I had, so I did some sketches! This is an AU where Longan was the one who found Pineapple Tart as an egg instead of Beet, and decided to 'raise' him to continue their rule in case something happens to them- But keeps him secluded from the outside world and most likely knows he's Ananas son, they won't even allow him to call them 'parent'.
And They re-named him Kohala, bc that's another kind of Longan heeey.
The timeline doesn't make sense but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

LINGVA LATINA PER SE ILLVSTRATA - CAPITVLVM QVINTVM DECIMVM
Jen!
Tumblr media
Do, kompreninte finfine la signifon, mi scivolis kial uzitis komparativon anstataŭ simple adjektivo. Ĉu eblus ambigueco aŭ miskompreno?
Sufikso «re-»
Aperas ĉi sufikso, kiun ni jam bone konas.
Titus tibi mālum dare non potest, at ego tibi malum dare possum, nisi hic et nunc Tito librum reddis!
Ambaŭ vortoj diferenciĝas parole ĉar A kun signo estas pli longa ol A sen signo. Mi trovis ĝin tre tre kreema. Tiaj frazoj multe helpas onin memori vortojn.
Kiel?? Tamen!
Do mi guglis latinan vortaron kaj trovis la vorton tie. Do, uf, problemo solvita!
Nun vidu kie interese:
Pueri autem priorem libri partem tantum audiunt, nam antequam magister partem libri posteriorem recitare incipit.
Aperas vorto «lectulus», signifante «malgranda lito». La libro mem diras ke ĝi signifas tion, sed kursivigante la leteroj UL.
Latin Is Simple diras ke «considere» estas «sit down» kaj «sedere» estas «sit». Serĉante ĉi-ambaŭ vortoj ĉe Glosbe, aperas ke «sit down» = «sidiĝi» kaj «sit» = «sidi».
Do, mi alvenis la finon.

Ok I’m adding my thoughts on the twin dragons now since we got more lore
Twin dragon cookies
So obviously they didn’t get their cookie form before the split. The twins were in eternal conflict as they did until dark cacao showed up and went “stop it!” And spritzed them with a water bottle- I mean sword
Anyways they because fiercely loyal to him and the dark cacao kingdom, they got their cookie forms during the time dark cacao was missing (because au differences) they were layed to rest in the remains of the castle where they got reborn and the whole settlement kinda thought they were ghosts. And the twins decided to protect the castle until the king returned.
But uh, ok this one is more an idea but im looking at the new Ovenbreak event and realizing Ananas and pitaya would not fight like that and so now the question is who would,
And I’m slowly looking over at the twins and realizing longan would definitely be the type of guy to see them living their best split lives and go “ew, weak” and put them back together to use as another subordinate.
And uh, so monochrome dragon cookie is an idea I’m playing with. Because the twins got their cookie forms the black and white dragon being rejoined would keep that.
That’s it that’s the thoights.
But I’ll continue with the oc rambles since there’s not much to say.
Blueberry dragon cookie
Blueberry dragon cookie is a literal child, she was a baby dragon orphaned because of the final fight between the tea knight order and the dragon that wiped them out, but Tea Knight killed the dragon, then realized it was rampaging because the village had its hatchling. And for his own reasons Freed the hatchling.
But since the baby didn’t know how to hunt on its own yet she died. And we got blueberry dragon cookie. She very much is one of the uh, won the universal lottery type situations. She’s not a legendary dragon, she’s a minor one who got an upgrade after reincarnation.
She’s like an epic rank of we are doing that (or dragon I guess but epic fits more)
Silver dragon cookie
This oc is newer but another case of winning the universe lottery is a guy I’m calling Silver dragon cookie, he’s a selfish ass but a drake who got cookie reincarnation. Still a wip so I don’t have much else to add here
Candied orange dragon cookie
This is another case like snapdragon. Stillborn egg. Little egg was another of longans brood but in the future Ivy kinda works at the tbd on contract, thinks maple Taffy is cool, and manages to convince longan to let her give him one of the stillborn eggs for relic reasons.
To everyone’s surprise when maple puts it in the incubator it hatches into a dragon cookie.
He gets to keep the baby though so that’s cool. As for why this baby hatched as a child and not a dragon like snapdragon? Coin flip. Or maybe the baby was dead longer so it has to re learn how to dragon meanwhile snapdragon was only dead for a little bit so they just needed to learn the opposite or something.
Ivy dragon cookie
Ok Ivy is less a unique case in the sense that she’s one of longans offspring so of course she’d be dragged into the cookie reincarnation thing. Idk the exact timeline but she fled the palace in dragon form and at some point got killed and reborn. She hasn’t been able to access the dragon form again but that’s probably a mix of being a teenager and unresolved daddy issues.
She’s got mad issues with her parent it’s a whole thing.
Fuck it I’m rambling anyways.
OKAY SO DRAGONS.
Ground rules for my au: the dragons got their cookies forms after they died and got reincarnated as cookies.
Why does this happen? Dragon’s valley flow/cycle of life.
The dragons valley essentially made dragons in the first place a loooooooong time ago (in modern days dragons are more plentiful in many areas but their ancestry can be traced back to dragon valley) and it likes these little bitches.
However over the decades as dragons were hunted out of fear or greed and the legendary dragons were slowly hunted into hiding. The valley came to the conclusion that the legendary dragons would not survive this new cookie world. The minor dragons (the more animalistic ones) could recover, as some cookies recognized their importance in echo systems and food chains and advocated for protection, or at least not their eradication, but the legendary dragons were clever, powerful, and fucking stubborn.
The legendary dragons were also the only ones to be able to fully utilize dragon tongue so unless it wanted a whole magic language to die out those big bitches had to survive and pass down the knowledge, if not to other talking dragons than to cookies but as they currently stand, most legendary dragons would rather die than teach cookies a word of dragon tongue nor give them the magic to utilize it
The valley itself isn’t so much sentient as it’s a force of nature. And all It knew is it doesn’t want these legendary dragons to die out. Because dragons aren’t immortal but they live for a stupid long time. Like a couple centuries at LEAST (still debating if minor dragons also live that long or have slightly shorter lifespans when compared to legendary dragons, which is like comparing the length of gigantic sky scrapers) so it used the flow of life to come up with a plan.
The legendary dragons would inevitably die, whether of old age, being killed, or some other method that causes their demise, and using the flow of life, it’d bring them back as cookies. Without their original memories, and resetting the aging counter a bit.
They’d eventually regain the memory’s of their past lives and their full power, but until then they could live among the cookies and gain a new perspective or appreciation for them, and ideally that’d allow them to at least be willing to co exist with cookies, if not protect them.
There is some variation in how each dragon came back and I’ll get there but for now here’s what’s consistent:
The dragons have to die in order to be reborn
They will not have the memories of their past life immediately, at the very least they’ll start to regain them in about 10 years
They will not regain their full dragon power and ability to turn into their dragon form until they start to regain their memories.
They will come back a bit younger than how they were mentally before they died. (There is reasoning for this)
I will also note exceptions: this reincarnation thing isn’t limited to just the legendary dragons, this can also include any dragon that is powerful, can speak, or just wins the universal lottery.
Using ocs as example- Blueberry dragon by all accounts should not have been qualified for the dragon cookie reincarnation thing and yet she was, was it because she died so young? Did she have some potential the flow of life sensed? Or was it some work of fate?
Fuck if I know and frankly I hope it’s debated in universe.
I’m currently unsure if this dragon cookie reincarnation will apply to minor dragons like the wyvern, but since minor dragons are animalistic in nature and are slowly recovering Imma say it likely won’t happen unless someone gets really fucking lucky. Or some insane bulshit happens. One of those
But back to the legendary dragons-
As for the five dragons cause of death and circumstance when they were reborn, I haven’t got everything down yet so I’ll go in order of what I got down ish (the exact timeline is still a wip and I haven’t settled on anything yet. Plus I’m not including ocs in this just yet)
-Pitaya dragon was the last legendary dragon to die, killed by Knight cookie himself when he was an older teenager (because blorbo bias I made him cool) when they were brought back as a cookie they were around young adult older teen age mentally. And frankly has the worst case of the reincarnation amnesia.
Doesn’t help pitaya isn’t actively trying to regain their past memories. Idk why, maybe they don’t care, maybe they suspect their previous self was a dickhead and don’t want to ruin their opinion on the cookies, maybe it’s a secret third thing! But this refusal to remember has made them slower in regaining their full power, they can’t even consistently turn into their dragon form yet. The Hollyberry castle one? That was a fluke and haven’t been able to do this again.
However they arguably get along the best with cookies! After the castle event they sorta became a main stay in the kingdom, they may act tough and crass but they are kind of like a giant fussy cat that likes to fight. They really are a giant lizard. They sort of unofficially declared themselves the protector of the Hollyberry kingdom, claiming that place is also their nest, outside of dragons valley of course.
Plus I’m playing with the idea with the current red dragon event that this will be the event that gets them actually thinking about their past and lost memories, because a deal they made as a dragon that they forgot about is actively biting them in the tail and now they’re slightly worried about any more deals they forgot. I’m thinking by the end of this event they can take their true dragon form at will. Depends how things play out but I like this story arc.
-Ananas is an interesting case, they died of old age or possibly sickness at the tropical soda islands. And they were a dragon who hated cookies, saw himself as above them that sort of thing. So they’d need extra work to even be willing to negotiate with cookies.
So the cycle brought them back as a young child.
They were taken in and raised by the mango tribe, and when they started to regain their past life memories and full power the integration kind of worked. They still had that complex but swore to protect the island and it’s cookies, and is forever grateful to the mango tribe, even going to them for help when he adopted a baby cookie and realized they had no fucking clue how to parent.
Honestly they still have a ways to go when dropping that dragons pride thing, I plan for an arc where they decide to reclaim that so called pride and make a new thing that’s way healthier or something. He at least becomes less bitchy about caring for cookies.
Also he’s got his full power back as shown with going full dragon on command.
-Lotus dragon also was a dragon who disliked cookies, seeing them as simply batteries to drain of life energy to sustain herself. So safe to say she also saw themselves as above cookies.
Lotus dragon died when the lotus paradise was wiped out all that time ago. And when the villagers went to search for the dragon they found a young child in the wreckage that had a resemblance to the dragon said to live in the paradise. And the village raised her while they rebuilt the paradise.
When she started regaining her past life’s memories she decided to take part more in the rebuilding effort, the lotus paradise was her home, and she declared herself the guardian of the paradise. They still ended up keeping that sort of symbiotic relationship with cookies, but instead of going full parasitic went a bit more mutualistic?
She’s drain a bit of life energy during wish festivals and power herself, but would grant wishes in return (within reason, she’d do illusion magic for the stuff outside of her power) she still said cookies mean nothing to her but her actions show otherwise.
This is especially shown when longan wrecks her shit and she decides she wants that bitches head on a silver platter how DARE you stone HER cookies and destroy HER home!
And of course the cookies and their reliance on her not as batteries but as a guardian did help her regain her dragon form and realize ‘hey this is nice actually’ and after the apocalypse is over she’s likely much nicer to cookies.
Now she informs the cookies of the energy draining and gets their consent first. Or something, The wish festival still happens but it’s less something idk yet. Less bad? Less leechie? Idk details are fuzzy but it’s nice and fun and she thinks cookies are cool actually.
-Lychee I’ll admit I don’t have the details on yet, they’re likely second last to die but I’m willing to be flexible on that? Idk yet. They likely were a dragon who didn’t care much for cookies, just agreeing with longan because she liked them even before or something idk.
I’m playing with the idea they were briefly raised by the ancient rambutan tribe when reborn, but after getting her memories back decided to run away and live in a cave with monsters instead, idk I think the parallel with Ananas could be fun especially if that didn’t work for them.
Plus it’d make her character arc with the current rambutan and her tribe kinda cute and come full circle and look this is very wip right now. But they do eventually side with the cookies, just takes a lot of work and a whole ass crisis during the apocalypse.
I’m open to suggestions for lychee.
And finally Longan dragon
Dear Sweet Longan dragon.
This bitch gamed the system.
-So they can’t be the first to die but did recognize the reincarnation thing going on, and probably did a little forseeing of their own about it. They already knew the dragon population would dwindle and that cookies would rule the world. And they hated that. Their first plan was having a lot of eggs but that was more of a backup (plus they were more concerned about having the ‘perfect heir to the ivory dragon name’ than the actual growing the population thing so you can imagine how well that went) After observing as much of this reincarnation cycle as they could, they decided a plan.
They’d seal themselves in their palace, and I guess set up something so lychee can wake them up a fuck long time later, and sink it into the ocean, and then they’d er- well- cause their own death- and ensure when they were reborn (which they knew would happen) they’d be stuck in the palace until they regained their memory and power back, and thus would learn nothing and gain no appreciation for cookies so when they came back they’d be no different than before and thus undermined this entire fucking system and I am shaking longan like a leaf MOTHERFUCKER YOU CHEATED.
I mean it is in character, longan is so stubborn to change and even considering the possibility of dragon kind adapting to this new world, no longer on top but still very much a part of it to be respected and feared, and decided to do the whole bring back the past plan instead.
Because all the foresight in the world cannot stop you from being stubborn as a brick wall.
Im not gonna go into my dragon cookie ocs in this post, if interest is there I’ll make a separate one but
-TLDR I made a whole system where the dragons reincarnated as dragon cookies because the universe wanted them to learn to adapt to change and longan looked at this and said “no”
AND THIS ALL STARTED BECAUSE I WANTED KNIGHT COOKIE TO BE A DRAGON KILLING BADDASS GOODNIGHT EVERYBODY!
-for real though any questions/thoughts/whatever please send to my ask box I love this idea way too much and would love to talk about it more-

Somebody who I wrote about in that Intercept piece was a New York Times reporter, John Crewdson in late 70s, 80s wrote these series of heartbreaking reports about sexual violence and torture and murder that are just wrenching and it was largely ignored. He won a Pulitzer for it, but it didn’t lead to larger calls for the reformation of the border patrol.
JS: Talk about some of the tactics that were used by the border patrol and also Operation Wetback.
GG: Operation Wetback was what might be called the modernization of deportation — deporting hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrant workers mostly from California, but also from other states in the Southwest. One of the things that it did was it was an upscaling of intelligence and [an] increase in coordination of the border patrol with other law enforcement agencies, local police agencies, and even the FBI. And they put into place mechanisms that could analyze data information tips, including data about harvests and employment, act on that information, and then turn it into more intelligence that they can act again.
One of the agents in charge of that intelligence gathering, John Longan, then moved on to work for the State Department’s Public Safety Agency, which was really a front for the CIA, where he would work with intelligence agencies in third world hotspots. Longan, in particular, worked in Thailand, Colombia, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, and Guatemala. And basically, he did in those countries what he did in California was he professionalized the intelligence agency and when I say professionalized I mean increase its capacity to gather information mostly through brutal interrogations including torture, act on that information, meaning go out and capture more people, get more information through more torture, and then act on it again. The Central Intelligence Agency, that’s exactly what it does. It centralizes the activity of many of these different branches. And so, you see a direct relationship between these very brutal tactics that were worked out at Operation Wetback and then exported abroad during the Cold War.
JS: One of the things that you point out is that in the early 70s, the U.S. was training Latin American security forces. A majority of them in countries run by military governments, and they were training them at the Border Patrol Academy in Texas and the Los Angeles Times, at the time, points out that CIA instructors trained them in the design, manufacture, and potential use of bombs and incendiary devices. So, talk about that connection between the CIA and regime change in Central and Latin America and also, the training of law enforcement military intelligence by the U.S. in some of these countries.
GG: In Latin America, after the Cuban revolution in 1959, but even after the overthrow of Jacobo Árbenz in Guatemala in 1954, the U.S. through its various foreign policy agencies — the State Department, the CIA — begin to focus on upscaling the internal defense capacity of security forces of its allied countries. The idea was to avoid getting into another Korean War where the United States was committed to military containment of communism and train their local allies to be able to root out what they call the internal enemy. This was the heart of the National Security Doctrine and that entailed, throughout the 1960s and 1970s, spending [an] increasing amount of money and resources and technology on professionalizing the intelligence agencies of its allied countries.
This all culminates in what becomes known as Operation Condor after the overthrow of Allende, Salvador Allende, in Chile in 1973 where the U.S. helps preside and coordinate the work of the intelligence agencies in its allied countries. Interestingly enough, the border patrol is involved in this. Who would have thought? Most critics of the border patrol, even those who criticize its brutality, tend to think of it as this kind of sleepy backwater federal agency, but it turns out that it was sending a number of its agents to allied countries as part of this police training. And in addition to bringing up police and soldiers to learn these torture techniques and bomb-building techniques and interrogation techniques in places like the Panama Canal and the School of the Americas, they were also bringing up these police officers to the Border Patrol Academy in Fresno, California.
JS: You also write: “There have been contradictory judicial rulings, but historically, agent power has been limited by no constitutional clause. There are few places patrollers can’t search, no property belonging to migrants, they can’t seize, and there’s hardly anybody they can’t kill provided that the victims are poor Mexican or Central American migrants. Between ’85 and ’90, federal agents shot 40 migrants around San Diego alone killing 22 of them. Since 2003, border patrol agents have killed at least 97 people including six children. Few agents were prosecuted.” How powerful have these agencies become — Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Patrol — and what would it look like to even hold them accountable?
GG: They are incredibly powerful and they operate with near complete impunity. Those are the deaths and killings that we know of. It’s really a kind of lawless region, the borderlands. I would argue based on my reading of the sources is that the vast majority of abuse and brutality just went under the radar, that we just don’t know about it. Again, John Crewdson, that New York Times reporter would just offhandedly talk about border patrol agents telling him that they threw “illegals off the cliff” and made it look like an accident. They would seize their property. They would seize the documents — the birth certificate of citizens, U.S. citizens. But if they were poor and Latino, they would have to spend an enormous amount of resources trying to get their birth certificates re-issued. So, there was no, there’s no accountability. Their power is practically limitless.
JS: And this issue of separating migrant families, there wasn’t really an official government policy on this but isn’t it the case that these agents still were doing it just sort of freelance?
GG: Yeah, they would target children and migrant crossings as a way of using them as bargaining chips with their families — forcing them to confess, forcing them to turn themselves in. There’s cases of children who were U.S. citizens who were captured by the border patrol and then just released in Mexico with little recourse or means for how they can return. The practice that’s been reported on now of placing migrants in extremely cold holding centers that dates back at least to the 1980s. Crewdson reports on INS officials trading young Mexican women to Los Angeles Rams for season tickets. I mean, this is a level abuse and impunity and horror that’s hard to wrap one’s mind around.
JS: We know that thousands of children have been separated from their parents and held in prisons, camps, but at the same time, we’ve had several deaths that seem to have been preventable of children who were then taken into U.S. custody. What do you see that has happened there and is it different than deaths that happened under the Obama administration or previous presidencies?
GG: No, I think that what Trump has done is by politicizing the issue rather than making it about pragmatic or technocratic policy concern about border security, he’s pulled the curtains back to reveal the horror of the border. This has been going on — certainly, the deportations under Obama increased — and with the same intent to create a deterrent. So, in many ways, it’s a continuation. I think what Trump does is he turns it into spectacle and obviously, it’s related to maintaining his own political base right of 35, 38 percent.
JS: Trump loves to, you know, he says, “Oh, I just had you know, Nancy and Chuck —” referring to Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer “— in the White House,” or their representatives. And you know, there’s all this fanfare on Twitter about how he told them to get lost, you know because they weren’t agreeing to his border. But we don’t really have an effective opposition coming from the leadership of the Democratic Party on this. Break down what we’re sort of, seeing the elites of the Democratic Party staking out as their position right now.
GG: They’re staking out the position that they’ve had basically since the late 1970s with Jimmy Carter, the idea that you can trade border security for some kind of limited reform whether it be a one-time amnesty. Bush tried this, George W. Bush, Barack Obama tried this. The idea that you can give the border brutalists, the nativists whatever they want in terms of security, in terms of billions and billions of dollars to turn the border into, what Chuck Schumer in 2013 called, “tough as nails” in exchange for some kind of one-off reform. Now we’re talking about DACA, the deferred, which would legalize the status of undocumented residents who came here as children. It’s a devil’s bargain and it can’t work.
What the Democrats need to do is that they need to seize on the migration issue as a moral issue — something equivalent of the Civil Rights issue. Just as you couldn’t have Bull Connor police departments and Jim Crow laws and call yourself a democracy in the 1960s and 1970s, you can’t have a country where over more than 10 million people live completely vulnerable in the shadows and call yourself a democracy. But the Democrats constantly trim on the issue and they’re constantly trying to — I mean, look when Schumer and Pelosi sat down with Trump, Trump said, “Well, we all agree on that border security is important” and Schumer said, “Yes, we agree on that,” and then Trump said “Well, we agree. Well, we agree on that.” So you’re seeing the Democratic leadership at least caught in the contradiction of policy impasse that’s three or four decades in the making.

Boba/Bubble tea review guide to Tampa Bay (by @tampaish)
“Wait, what IS boba/bubble tea???!”  Boba and bubble tea are used interchangeably. Boba is the tapioca pearls (v high in starch, and often soaked in sugar/sweeteners so def not healthy btw) and it’s often put into teas and sipped from those fat straws. I think it started in Taiwan with milk teas (teas with milk added). Personally, I don’t like milk teas bc they are often made with powder and make me wanna throw up (I’m lactose-intolerant, but I also hate the taste of dairy so even if it’s lactose-free whatever added, i still don’t like the taste). In the past 5 years, boba’s been a hot hit all over the US. As you’ll see, it’s especially peaked in areas near colleges and with a high Asian-population.
**MY HISTORY WITH BOBA** I tried bubble tea for the first time in China like 10ish years ago. I hated it, I thought the boba was disgusting and squishy and weird, and I threw my drink away. Fast-forward a couple years when I was in Gainesville and was re-introduced to bubble tea at Lollicup. Lollicup (now TeaStori) is the older sibling of Bobacup in Tampa, and I was addicted and went there ALL. THE. TIME. It was the only bubble tea place in Gainesville for several years, and I was used to their texture of boba as the standard.
Now, I probably get bubble tea on average 7 times a week. and I have for a couple years... You could say my boba pack year history is around 4 years ;)  tehe, ok, let’s end this medical-analogy and get to the real good shit.
**A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF (almost) EVERY BUBBLE TEA/BOBA PLACE IN TAMPA BAY!** Somewhat sorted by location from closest to furthest away from USF, which is really the boba mecca in Tampa Bay! Click here or the image below to view the instagram story highlights which has all the deets!
Tumblr media
for those of you who would prefer a text-summary, I'll do so below
***USF AREA***
Right across the street from one of the entrance/exits of USF leads you almost directly to Bobacup. I'd heard about Bobacup long before I'd been, since I was living in Gainesville when it opened and back then, it also served food! Now they don't serve hot food: just french macarons & mochi ice cream (along with bubble tea, duh)! My favorite things about Bobacup are: super cute seasonal decorations (February brings out so many huge cute fluffy teddy bears!!!), including a swing that often changes with tea-puns (e.g. "Love you to infini-tea")! My second favorite thing is how many options for toppings they have, including some seasonal flavored soaked boba (NOT poppers, ugh i hate poppers, but they also have poppers...) and they had heart, dolphin, and star-shaped jellies last year!! They also started having crystal jelly (aka agar jelly) which I've been obsessed with!! And mini honey boba, aloe vera, lychee, etc etc etc. My third favorite thing is that the loose leaf teas are $3 for a large!!!! :D I get that a lot, and when I want to treat myself, I get an avocado snow (capped with a candy that looks like the avocado pit!)
Across the street is a boba place that's open until midnight (latest in all the tampa bay area) called "The Boba House". The drinks are super sweet and boba isn't too good, but I do like the artsy/alt vibes and if you're craving boba at 11:30pm, there's only one place to go...
Chewy Boba is behind Bobacup but in a diff plaza. It's decently new, and offers 10% off to students. They also have macarons. The tea and macarons are okay, I'm not a huge fan but I know others who love it... They have arcade games and sometimes lots of ppl gather to chill
Kung Fu Tea has some of my favorite drinks. I've been addicted to their wintermelon black tea since I discovered it years ago, and last year I discovered another addiction: logan jujube tea (it comes with longan pieces in the tea!). I get the wintermelon 30% sweet and logan 0% (it's still p sweet bc they add syrup). I like red bean and/or boba as textures in them. The ppl who work there are all nice except this one guy who isn't so nice, but I tolerate him bc i'm addicted... seriously. ADDICTING. I've tried other types of teas (like their WOW milk teas) at KFT and hated them. The food is amazing tho, i've tried the squid, chicken, calamari, fried shrimp... All really good and you get a ton of food
Naga Tea is open until 11pm, which makes it the second-latest bubble tea place in tampa (after The Boba House). Their teas taste great & the boba is okay most of the time. I recommend coming here to treat yourself bc it can get pricey, esp since I think the mix'n'match drinks are the best (try lychee and peach, or peach and wintermelon!) The boba is flavorless (not soaked in sweetener) so I don't like it as much as sweetened...
Kalesia Tea Lounge is my all-time biggest addiction. They have such an expansive space to study/work/chill, which is super important to me as I'm often looking to spend at least a couple hours studying while I'm at these places. EVERY tea i've gotten from them has tasted great. My favorite loose leaf teas are: coconut oolong, kyoto rose, and moroccan mint. My favorite specialty drinks are: dirty chai and strawberry matcha. I LOVE that i can get boba with my dirthy chai!! My only complaints about Kaleisia is thaty they now close at 8pm daily, and they don't have a large variety of textures (only boba, chia, and poppers). Kaleisia also offers good food that's mostly vegan! I like their $5.50 noodles with full on spicy sauce. Fun fact: “Kaleisia” is derived from “Kaleidoscope” and “Asia”! Pro tip: Check the calendar near the tea wall to see if there’s any special deals of the day. They also have “Teas of the Month” which are $0.50 cheaper than otherwise.
Quickly Boba opened up near USF, and they offer food. I like the food (only had one bowl) but their teas are nothing special imo. I get the rose or some flavored normal tea. I think their location in Brandon tastes better for tea.
**OUTSIDE OF THE USF AREA**
BRANDON, FL
Green Island Yogurt and Tea is mostly tea. I have rarely seen anyone come in here for yogurt... I really like their teas. They taste good and just as importantly, and very well-priced. The boba is okay, nothing extraordinary. I DO like their food though, I think it’s yummy and well-priced too. I really like the flavor.
TBD @ 301 is new and surprisingly (despite their large tea wall), their teas don’t taste good, and the boba is realllyyyy bad. However, I would recommend this place because they do a very good lunch meal combo with various Filipino foods and a tea for like, cheap (forget exact price). The chicken adobo was soooo delicious. And the people working there are super nice, and I think they donate 10% of proceeds to some charity. or maybe it was 5% or 1%, whatever.
***WESLEY CHAPEL***
Buttermilk Provisions serves Kaleisia tea and boba, but the boba is horrible. I’d recommend you get tea without boba, or get a coffee or something. They’re really not known for their bubble tea, so stick with their cafe-stuff.
***ST. PETE AREA***
Moonlight Boba is new and sooo good. The ppl working are super nice and helpful. I loved the tea flavor, and my noodles were SO GOOD. I’ve been here 3x and every time it’s been consistently good.
Moonlight Teahouse is 10min away from Moonlight Boba, but NOT associated with each other at all!!! Moonlight Teahouse also serves tea and food, but imo Moonlight Boba is better in just about everything (service, food, tea)...
