11 Questions x 3
I was tagged by @kyliafanfiction, @trinitea-fics, and @skyeward-otp forever ago, but there’s no way I can come up with 33 questions.  So I’ll answer the 33 and come up with a new 11.  Theoretically.  We’ll see.
From Kylia:
1.) Favorite Trope To Subvert?
One of my favorites that I (think I) pulled off was in Please Don’t Make Me! , where Skye is all whispering in Ward’s ear about them sneaking off and finding a way to ~entertain~ themselves, and it certainly seems like sexy times are about to happen.  And then...it’s Mario Kart.  I love twisting people’s expectations for the sake of comedy and fun.
2.) Favorite Trope to ‘Play Straight’, as it were?
Bedsharing.  I am weeeeeeak for bedsharing.  GImme gimme gimme.  I want those  punks to wake up spooning and entwined and then the awkward to set in, but actually push them to deal with their feelings.  Yes please I need it now.
3.) What is that one character that, no matter how much you might like to be open minded about other fans having their own opinions and whatnot, when you see people defending them, you just cannot stop rolling your eyes and being at the very least somewhat angry, if not raging?
Melinda May and Phil Coulson....
4.) Favorite Thing To Put Ketchup On?
The garbage can.
Haha, just kidding.  I’m not a huge ketchup fan.  I prefer bbq sauce or ranch for most things you’d use with ketchup.  But ketchup on a burger or hot dog works well (if bbq sauce isn’t an option).
5.) Cake or Death?
Cake.
6.) Is there a Spoon?
47 of them to be precise.
7.) What is the Average Airborne Velocity Of An Unladen Swallow?
African or European?
8.) Did you get the references in questions 5, 6, and 7 without having to look them up?
5 sounds familiar, but no.  6, not even in the slightest.  7, my answer should explain that one.
9.) Silliest name you’ve ever heard for a person/thing/group?
Oh, oh, oh, I know I have some doozies of nicknames, but I’m drawing a complete blank right now.
10.) What is a book series that is nominally completed that you’d like to see more installments of?
I’m a big fan of the Jack Ryan books by Tom Clancy, but well, Clancy died a few years ago, and none of the co-writers can match his original style and quality (honestly, neither can his own later books).  So while that verse could easily accommodate more stories, and I could love them, it’s not going to happen with the quality I want, so I wouldn’t want people to try and subsequently fail.
11.) Song you both hate but sometimes can’t stop listening too?
There was an *Nsync song back in the day that I hated.  But I listened to it enough times that I ended up learning all the lyrics and singing along with.  That’s happened with a few others too.  There are some One Direction songs that I like and it pisses me off that I like them.
From Trini:
1. A song you are listening to on loop right now
Actually no, I’m not this week.  Which honestly is kinda rare.  Then again, I’ve been listening to a couple of playlists with The War on it and that song always gets to me, so it’s back in my mind again.
2. What is a popular show/book/movie/podcast could you not get into/have no interest in?
I’ve never gotten into Supernatural.  Just never had that much interest, despite having a big fondness for Jensen Ackles.
3. What is the last movie you watched?
Thor: Ragnarok
4. Opinion of Valentine’s Day?
It’s nice to have a day where you make an extra effort to show your love for others.  It’s just as lovely to do so with family and friends as it is with a romantic partner.  And I definitely prefer, low-key, thoughtful gifts/activities.
5. A show, book or movie that you consider “Your childhood”
Inspector Gadget was one of my absolutely faves when I was a kid.  Also, totally loved Ghostwriter and wanted to start my own crime-solving group.  Alas, we did not have a ghost to aid us.  Magic School Bus was also watched a lot and I can still remember the ending bit with all the kids making phone calls.
6. Favourite Youtuber/what you do watch on Youtube?
I mostly listen to music on YouTube.  I don’t follow any particular person.  I’ve been enjoying mashup videos lately.  Imagine Dragons are great for mashups.  (There.  Happy Megan?)
7. What do you need to buy?
A new battery for my laptop.  It would be nice to use it when it wasn’t plugged in.  After all, that’s a big part of the whole laptop thing.
8. What merch are you close to impulse buying?
At this moment, nothing really.  But I had strongly considered buying Chloe Bennet’s Fight Like A Girl shirt.  If I had had the money at the time, I probably would have.
9. What’s the weather outside?
Right at this moment, overcast, grey, cool (low 40s), but happily, not raining.  Typical late March weather in this area.
10. A thing that you recently accomplished that you are proud of?
@mframe and I spent a good chunk of a day (or was it a couple days?) and built a form within the test environment of our database.  Built it from the ground up, adding groups, creating custom fields, making them calculated fields, setting up a bunch of codes in order to make them calculate correctly, etc.  And it works really well.  I really like it.  Now if only the assholes that I work with would shut the f*** up and get on board, we could actually use it.
11. Movie/book/Tv show/podcast coming out soon that you’re excited for
I NEED TO BUY MY TICKETS FOR INFINITY WAR.  Also, The Incredibles 2.
From Gilly:
1. If you won $1,000,000 dollars, what’s the first thing you’d do?
Pay off debt.
2. A movie/tv show that you always go back to whenever you’re bored or don’t know what to watch?
Friends, Community, Brooklyn Nine Nine are all great standbys for when I can’t decide on what I’m in the mood for.
3. Most meaningful book you’ve ever read.
That’s an excellent question.  To Kill A Mockingbird is one of those books that’s always stuck with me.  I need to re-read it again, in fact.
4. Have you ever gotten anyone to get hooked on a tv show? How did they feel about it?
HAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAH.  Yes.  I mean, nothing on the scale of Megan getting me hooked on AoS.  But I’ve convinced a couple friends to try Doctor Who, I got @evieoh to watch Community, and then she and I ganged up on @airaze-blog and made him watch all of Alias.  There was a lot of screaming.  We won’t talk about Orphan Black.
5. Has anyone ever gotten you hooked on a tv show? How did you feel about it?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Yes.
As referenced above, Megan was the one that really pushed me to try AoS again.  (I’d watched the first 3 or 4 episodes when it first aired, but lost interest and was always having to watch it later b/c of committments those nights.) There was another friend of ours at work, who pushed along with her, and my bff watched it as well and encouraged me.  I was kind of hesitant, didn’t care a whole lot, but I was getting into the MCU as a whole, so I decided to give it a shot again.
Amazingly enough, while I knew Hydra comes out of the shadows and about Jiaying’s evil turn, Double Agent Ward wasn’t spoiled for me.  I was SHOCKED at that.  And I’m so glad, because it was SUCH A GOOD TWIST.
But yeah.....that may have just slightly, dramatically changed the trajectory of my life.  I wouldn’t have had an Aussie live on my couch for the last 6 months and that would have truly been tragic.
6. Where’s your dream vacation?
Croatia.  I’ve been dying to go there for years and it gets more intense every day.
7. Favorite social media app/site.
Tumblr.  I get the most interaction and the widest range here.
8. Dream job.
Stay at home mom would be my preferred occupation.  For a profession, lactation consultant is my dream.  We’ll see if I ever get there.
9. Favorite genre to read/write.
Uhhh.....in terms of fanfic genres/tropes, I love enemies to friends to lovers (on any scale).
10. Favorite genre to watch.
I love spy shows.  Gimmes spies anyday.
11. Favorite quote at the moment.
CHICKENS!  (just for you, Evie)
My questions - sorry dudes, only doing 11.
What is your favorite season?
What are your feeling on A.I. (the concept, not the movie)?
What is the oldest piece of technology in your home?  Do you use it?  Do you know how?
Hummus.  Thoughts?
Tell me about a favorite birthday or holiday present.
What pair of shoes do you wear the most?  Are they your favorite or just the most functional or something else?
What’s your dream fanfic?
How easy is it for you to unplug?
What is a hobby/activity/something that you have an absurd amount of supplies/tools for?
What is your guilty pleasure snack food?
Are you more a dialogue or song lyrics referencer?
I tag: @evieoh, @mframe, @agenthaywood, @airaze-blog, @helloimthedoctor, @agentsofsunnydale, @queermageddon, @livesindaydreams, @orlissa, @vesperass-anuna, and @in-the-moving-castle

YEAR OF WHAT HAPPENS ON EARTH STAYS ON EARTH
[longer version of what I contributed to the new yorker’s year-end package. you can read that here, and listen to the accompanying megamix the video team made! links to previous year’s lists at bottom.] I did not grow up going to church, and I am not a particularly religious person. A few days after the inauguration, I wandered into a nearby church and took a seat in the back pews. I’d gone there right after the election. There was some time for anyone with anything on their mind to stand up and speak. If you need others to pray for you, just let us know. A middle-aged black man in a leather jacket got up and began telling us about an argument he was having with a friend on Facebook. It was about the election, but it was actually about the intractability of racism. He was getting frustrated while describing it to us, in part because he seemed to value being the cool and level-headed one. Plus he was describing the kind of argument millions of people were having on the Internet. “I just hope he finds peace,” the guy said. He paused, then put his hands on his chest. “On a lighter note, today would have been Jimi Hendrix’s seventy-fourth birthday.” He opened up his leather jacket to show everyone his Hendrix t-shirt. “I just wanted to say that, because he was just awesome.” So I returned here, the day after marching through Manhattan with a poster that said “HOLD ON, BE STRONG.” I needed to be in a room that was powered by something other than hate--to be reminded of vision and purpose, even if they weren’t mine to claim. To listen to wisdom gleaned from a book I’ve never read, and pick and choose what I wanted. To hear others pour themselves into songs I never, ever sing along to. I wanted to steal their vibes.  Instead of a hymn, they passed out small pieces of paper with the lyrics of John Lennon’s “Imagine.” This is not the type of church people come to for the music. The pianist started playing, and I remember thinking about how it felt like magic when I learned how to play those chords as a kid. I couldn’t believe we were doing this. We sang, tentatively at first, as though we could not believe these words in this space. Picture it: singing of “no heaven” and “no religion, too,” with humility and hope, inside a house of worship. It was like an admission that faith was inadequate. All we had was one another. “Imagine” is a song I’ve heard millions of times, the type of song that is so ubiquitous that we rarely bother scrutinizing its words, its vantage point, the possibility that someone wrote these words because he actually believed them. I sang along with a room of strangers, and we looked at one another, and, for the first time in months, I began to cry.   TWO LYRICS THAT REMINDED ME OF POLITICS EVEN IF THEY HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS "Wrote this shit January 21″ “Take me back to November / Take me back to November” “I’M AN ANGRY TEENAGER” Novelist, “Street Politician” ONCE THEY START, I HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE END Jim O’Rourke’s recently unearthed cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” Kanye’s sitcom-length remix of “Bed” THURSDAY NIGHTS ON NBC Ross from Friends’ very Madchester guitar-y Boiler Room set DJ Seinfeld, Time Spent Away from U Nino Man, Jadakiss and Styles P, “Friends”

Okay, so made for tv Disney movie time. *cracks knuckles* Descendants 2 time!
Oh shit the evil kids are casting a spell
No, wait...they're singing?
They're singing out how evil they are.
Tina thinks that this probably takes place in the past.
They're giving everyone apples that make them evil.
Oh shit, Mal's mommy issues are back. Like, already. We're not even through the first song.
No, wait, everyone has mommy issue.
The apples made everyone evil and also made they learn a bunch of over-produced dance moves.
OH SHIT MAL'S BEEN STEPFORDED!
Ben's trying to stop her from getting roasted by the press.
Ooh, he sent the press away to stop them from asking uncomfortable questions. That's questionable, politically.
Tina's all mad because part of Mal's good guy makeover is dressing her LIKE BEN'S MOM.
Apparently being the king's girlfriend means running everything.
Mal look
They showed Mal spitting out food at Aladdin and Jasmine's. Fuck you, Mal.
Mal's using magic to keep up! Evie's mad at her! It's all season 6 of Buffy in here!
Tina: *gasp!* They're MAGIC-SHAMING her!
Evie got rid of her mirror? Why? That shit was so useful.
Tina: Yeah Evie, it's weird that Mal's nervous about being the steady girlfriend of the President-For-Life.
TIME FOR SUUUUUUUBTEEEEEEEEEEEXT
Evie's super in respectiability politics.
Jay's really into orgies.
But he doesn't want Carlos there.
Oh my god, are they trying to play Carlos as straight?
OH MY GOD ARE THEY TRYING TO PLAY CARLOS AS STRAIGHT
Well Jane, maybe if you weren't crawling up Mal's ass she wouldn't make evil eyes at you.
Apparently everyone thinks Ben's going to marry Mal. Makes sense, they're all the kids of Disney characters.
Ben's trying to get a stained glass couples picture of him and Mal. I sense a plot point.
Tina: Just wear a sign that says "Desperate," Ben.
Shut up, Jane.
Why is Chad going to Evie for fashion tips? She hates his ass.
Chad's gonna try to usurp. Dang.
After having locker room sex with Jay, apparently.
Evie's got cash now from selling her designs. Upgrade your boyfriend too.
Okay, Ben is trying waaaaaaaaay too hard.
Mal's really easily bought off.
OH SHIT FENCING.
Too much cherography.
Who says FINISH HIM at a fencing match?
Wait, are they just doing Mulan but with Lonnie as Mulan and a fencing team as the Chinese army.
They are.
Chad is sexist, surprising nobody.
As is the rulebook.
Geez Jay, stand up for your friends.
STOP TRYING TO MAKE CARLOS STRAIGHT.
And jeez, don't make him straight so he can date Jane.
Jane sucks.
OOPS FORGOT YOU GREW UP IN ABJECT POVERTY HA HA I'M JANE
Ugh, a friendzone joke.
...did Mal just have an evilgasm?
Wow, going into surprsingly casual detail about Carlos' abusive childhood.
Hey Chad, don't break into other people's rooms while those people are in there.
What's with the 3-D printer stuff?
Mal made Carlos a truth gummy. So he can be honest. About being attracted to Jane. Yeah, sure, whatever you so.
The dog ate the gummi and now we're in a talking dog movie.Wasn't expecting that.
Poor Carlos. Did that dog imply he has crabs?
Welcome to the movie, Hook's kid.
This kid is 500% drama.
I think we're meeting kid!Ursula.
Oh geez, these were the kids who weren't cool enough to join Mal's gang. That's a low bar.
Kid!Ursula is named Uma. I know because they're singing a whole song called " My Name is Uma (please buy my dolls)"
She wants to take over the world because she didn't get into the first movie.
I think Harry Hook is going to be this movie's "character who seems like he want have sex with everyone in every scene he's in." (A role previously held by Ben in the last movie.)
Oh shit, Ursula does not like it when people sing in her bar. Her bar that is mostly populated with teenagers played by twenty year olds.
Harry Hook is getting handsy with Gaston Jr.
Mal is performing traditional feminity to please Ben. Gross.
Uh oh, Ben found her magic book.
Ben, don't be an asshole about this.
Okay Mal, magically date-raping your boyfriend can't be the solution to all of your problems.
Ben doesn't get how the class system works.
Bad saving throw, Ben.
Uh oh, Mal's running away with her lizard mom. Back to Bad Guy island.
Mal, did you forget that everyone hated you back home?
We're getting a leitmotiff from the first movie. Mal's going bad again.
Being King-for-Life can't be that stressful if a dance is your main concern.
At least Ben admits that it's his fault that Mal ran to the island.
Tina: It's so sad that sixteen Ben already realizes that he's doomed to repeat the cycle of abuse he parents went through.
Looks like the old gang is going back to the island. And they're gonna disquise Ben. AWESOME.
Aw, Evie doesn't want to get trapped in the place she had her hellish childhood.
Tina: OH MY GOD THIS IS THE PLOT OF WHITE NIGHTS
Lady Tremaine owns a styling parlor. Yes. Mal's gonna get a re-evil makeover.
Kid!Stepsister is definitely a character who definitely existed before this.
This salon has a giant picture of Lucifer the Cat. Good.
Oh good, they had a spare costume from Katy Perry's California Girls video for Mal to wear.
Harry's trying to intimidate Mal, but she's knows he's Uma's bitch.
Ha ha, Ben's dressed like an evil longshoreman.
All of the ex-evil kids are afraid of being trapped where they had their incredibly abusive childhoods. Ben almost walks into a vent.
Ben, stop wandering off.
Oh, Ben. You sweet, stupid baby.
Are the ex-evil kids teaching Ben about the evils of the class system through song? Yes. Yes, they are.
"Remember the way to be cool is to be oppressed and hopeless."
Ben is having way too fun here.
He just danced into Gaston Jr. And the subtext returns.
Ben's just going into their secret hideout alone? I know he's here to have a serious talk with Mal, but they don't know who else could've moved in.
That dude still doesn't get it. I'd say that he should just leave her alone, but it's obvious her insecurities about fitting in are the root of their problems.
Aw, Mal thinks that the myth of upward social mobility is bullshit and that's why she can't date Ben.
She's so upset about this that she won't even talk to her gal pal!
Harry Hook has grabbed Ben! Those two shouldn't be in the same room together. All of the goggles in the world couldn't contain that much sexual chemistry.
If Mal wants to see Ben again, she'll have to face Uma in a fight that definitely probably won't involve singing and dancing.
Sorry ex-evil kids, Mal's gotta do this alone.
OH SHIT MAL'S SITTING IN A CHAIR BACKWORDS.
"I'M SO FLATTERED THAT YOU DREAM OF ME!"
Uma wants to nail Mal to the wall. In more ways than one.
This is the way all disputes between villains are solved. By arm wrestling.
Uma wants...the fairy Godmother's wand? Is it the first movie again?
They're going to use the previous established 3-D printer to make a fake. What an odd thing to be running plot point.
Girls sure do like talking about hair I guess.
Dizzy just reminded Evie that she'll never be more than an island girl.
Oh geez, now Chad knows about it. And Lonnie.
Tina: They just gave up the whole pretense that this society is a democracy.
Why does Chad think he'll be next in line for the throne?
Dizzy: Boy, it sure sucks being an untouchable.
...are Mal and Evie going to make out?
...ARE MAL AND EVIE BREAKING UP?
Aw, Evie's willing to subject herself to abject poverty to stay with Mal and Mal won't let her.
Now they're having a romantic montage of moments between these two characters as they sing a song about how much they love each other.
Forehead bump of love.
This is one of the least subtle things ever.
Tina: There is no part of this that is not a love song.
And we cut to Jay and Carlos sleeping on top of each other. WELL
I appreciate how much everyone does not want this movie to become a talking dog movie.
Mulan grew a personality in between movies. Tina doesn't know how to feel. On one had, it was well needed. On the other, she's basically a completely different person now.
HARRY HOOK IS STROKING BEN'S FACE WITH HIS HOOK!
Did all of the gay subtext fly out of Carlos and coat everyone else?
...Harry Hook is counting down the minutes until he gets to stick his hook in Ben. His words, not mine.
Ben's trying to get out of this using his one main skill from the first movie: seduction.
He's going all in, but Uma's not buying what he's selling.
Oh great, the talking dog is here.
Everyone's off to save the group's collective boyfriend. (Ben.)
Time for some good old fashioned sing-fight-dancing.
Tina: Is this supposed to a rap battle?
Yes. Yes, it.
"ALL IT TAKES IS ONE SWING AND I'LL HUMILATE HIM."
Oh god, Ben's trying to defuse the situation by seducing a whole crowd at once. I know it worked in the first movie, but this is so not your territory.
Turns out the talking dog thing was a plot point.
Gaston Jr wants Ben to tell his mom that he's still single.
Like, yeah, the wand was fake, but why did Uma just assume that she could do magic?
FIGHT SCENE WITHOUT RAPPING
Well, that extra's dead.
...did Harry and Jay hook up in the past?
Quick, everyone swordfight with whichever character you have the most sexual chemistry with.
Except Evie and Lonnie, who just get extras because we ran out of front-credited characters.
Harry's taking another crack at Ben because of course he is.
The good guys are escaping in a limo because Ben's real power is privilege.
Uh oh, Mal left her evil spellbook behind.
Ben just realized that his duty as King-For-Life is to everyone, not just the people in the magical suburbs.
Lonnie is going to bang Jay SO HARD.
Tina: OH MY GOD THE REAL PROBLEM IS THAT THE GIRLS NEVER LISTEN TO THE GUYS.
Carlos is totally pitching an orgy.
A therapy orgy.
Tina: This is where everyone is realizing that fuck Respectability Politics.
Carlos, that's not the right problem to focus on. Of course Ben's not in love with you just because of the spellbook, that's why he was all mad that you were using it early. Also because you were trying to use magic to wipe his mind.
The dog is trying to get Carlos to be hetrosexual. So that happened.
Tina called Jay using a loophole in the fencing handbook to get Lonnie on the team. By making her captain! And she's gonna make all those boys grovel at her feet.
Ugh, Doug.
Evie, you can do better.
Doug thinks that Evie might be banging Happy's son because he has a dark streak.
Tina: Why can't we see Happy's son? An evil Happy is so much better than Doug!
BOOOOOOOO.
Oh, Carlos is trying to ask out Jane. I repeat, BOOOOOOOOOO.
We went from one of the worst hetro romances in the movie to the other.
Chad needs find his chill.
Evie is trying to establish Dizzy as an up and coming designer to get her off of the island.
Is Jane just dating Carlos to get back at her mom? That's gross. Don't use people like that.
Ew, the manservant just told Mal to work it. She's, like, sixteen. Back off, creepy.
Mal: Father-tested, Mother-approved.
Ben invited Uma! Wow, dude is really doing the groundwork to set up this threeway.
Tina: Ben is going to bring over the villains over one at a time. With his dick.
Nah, it looks like Uma probably used magic to brainwash him. The dude has no luck in the "getting magically brainwashed into dating girls" department.
Or lots of luck in that department, depending on your view of things.
How are they not getting this? This is exactly what THEY did to him last movie?
Tina: They're dancing to an orchestral version of Kiss the Girl. That makes sense.
Boy, now's a dick time to unveil that stained glass window of Mal that Ben comissioned.
Uma used the book to command Ben to bring down the mystical barrier seperating the Island of Poor People from the rest of the country. This is...a bad thing, apparently?
They're doing the thing in which two people stand on opposite sides of a room and try to get the dog to come to them, except with Ben instead of a dog.
True love's kiss, wah wah wah.
Tina: Why's Uma jumping in the water? Me: Maybe she's going to pull an Ursula and turn into a giant octopus woman.
Holy shit, I was kidding.
Aaaaaaaaaaaand now Mal's a dragon.
Think Ben still wants that threesome?
WELL APPARENTLY HE DOES.
Tina: I know Ben's right, but also shut up Ben. I want to see a giant octopus lady fight a dragon.
It took him a while, but Ben finally managed to seduce Uma.
They came so close to having a good message.
Oh, okay. Apparently segregation is wrong, but only in some cases. That's...better, I guess?
And so everyone who didn't live in the island of abject poverty lived happily ever after.
Looks like Carlos is getting that orgy he was gunning for earlier.
Mal and Evie are working the subtext right to the bitter end. And Ben's getting that threesome one way or another.
Oh right, Doug exists.
Tina: Why is everyone dancing in the water? You can tell that the choreographer thought that this would look so much cooler than it does.
I guess Mal and Ben are engaged now? Well, I guess having a wife who can turn into a dragon would come in handy if you were King-For-Life ruling over a bunch of recently deposed royals. Especially since Chad is definitely going to try to overthrow him at some point.
Uma just broke the fourth wall and threatened another sequel.
Hey, they saved the cover of a classic Disney song for the credits.
Tina: Pop cover of Kiss the Girl better than rap cover of Be Our Guest?
Me: It'd pretty much have to be.

Beauty In Chaos- U.S.A. finding beauty in the storm before the calm
Guitarist Michael Ciravolo has worked with an amazing array of musicians (see some below) over his career. As his project, Beauty in Chaos (BIC) is about to unleash its new album, The Storm before the Calm (love the title), Noise Artists meets with the head honcho.
But first let us thank Michael. Fanboys/girls that we are at Noise Artists, we are awed by the kindness Michael always had for fans like ourselves, and the time spent this article and the previous one. This is an honor.
Also a shout out to Shauna, from the Shameless Promotion PR that introduced us and represent BIC, and many other exceptional artists.
In January 2019, Michael had the gentleness to record his experience in creating and recording the songs of the first album, finding beauty in chaos, with the various featuring artists. A gem. You can find our article, Stories of an all star recording told by Michael Ciravolo , THERE.

Now discover the project and the music with this interview given by Michael.
INTERVIEW
Who are the group members?
The consistent members in Beauty In Chaos is our producer Michael Rozon and myself. The ‘BIC Family’ as we like to refer to the amazing artists that have lent their talents is constantly revolving and evolving. The Mission’s Wayne Hussey and The Awakening’s Ashton Nyte amazing voices have each been featured on four songs to date. Other rock ‘luminaries’ include Simon Gallup (The Cure), Al Jourgensen (Ministry), and Robin Zander (Cheap Trick). Former Gene Love Jezebel’s drum Dirk Doucette has played on many of the tracks, and along with bassist Tish Ciravolo, have appeared in many of our videos.
In addition to Hussey and Nyte, our new album, ‘The Storm Before The Calm’ features new BIC Family members Curse Mackey, Steven Seibold, Rafe Pearlman and Holy Wars’ Kat Leon.
How did you come up with your name?
The name Beauty In Chaos was inspired by a photo I saw that some friends took of an abandoned building. While the structure was dilapidated and falling down, trees and vines had begun to almost reclaim it. Something about it struck me as ‘beauty’ in the middle of the destruction. I think each of us have both beauty and chaos in our lives … what those are my vary.
What is your music about?
I think we set the mood for light and dark, beauty and chaos. I always feel the best lyrics are the ones that are open to interpretation by not being so literal. I think all of the BIC singers do that extremely well.
What are your goals as an artist artistically/commercially?
Artistically I want to make a record that I am proud of. I feel that if I please myself, at least a few others will enjoy it. As far as commercially, that’s sort of a hot button with me. I think today there is a totally lack of ‘value’ placed on the art of making music. Maybe there is too much music out there. Maybe with some technology it seems too easy to make music. I hate the idea of streaming. To me, and I’m probably dating myself - music should be heard on vinyl. The entire experience of it. It is truly something special that many never experienced and sadly don’t care to experience. For BIC, I would just like to sell enough physical product for our label, 33.3 Music Collective to want to continue to release physical albums and CDs. I honestly don’t know if I would still do this if our only avenue was strictly digital.
What are you trying to avoid as a band?
While not being a typical ‘band’, I still try to make everything BIC does unique and different. This includes individual songs, albums and our videos … all while keeping a common thread throughout. I never want our albums, which feature different singers to sound like a ‘compilation’. It is a tall order but I think we have navigated this challenge remarkably well.
Why do you make the music you make? Is it in you? Is it your environment?
Beauty In Chaos started out for a fleeting moment as my ‘solo’ record. I wanted to prove to myself (and probably a few others) that I could do it. It quickly turned into something more … a lot more.
What inspire you for the music or for the Lyrics?
I’m inspired to create soundscapes to move our various singers to create something special. The simple phrase ‘beauty AND chaos’ is really all the input I give them. The music, which certainly contains both elements seems to set each on a path. It is almost like Christmas morning when I get their vocal parts back … which is always been a pleasant surprise!
Tell us what you are looking when trying to achieve your sounds. Do you experiment a lot or have a clear idea of what you want?
It varies. Some songs had a very clear path and some others twisted and eventually evolved. On our debut album ‘finding beauty in chaos’ I set some self-boundaries or limitations. I would play all of the guitars and there would be no synths. I wanted to create a heavily orchestrated sounding album, with lots of textures and all created with the electric guitars. Even though I think those ‘limitations’ were missed by many, I do feel we did just that. We employed so many different devices to manipulate the guitar on ‘FBIC’. 100+ guitar pedals, E-Bows, real violin bows, a crazy device call the ‘Gizmotron’ and more.
Describe your palette of sound.
Anything and everything! We certainly ‘play’ the studio, if that makes sense? I love guitar effect pedals, and in many instances the sound that happens when I step on a combination of pedals is the genius of a song.
Who would you want as a dream producer, and why?
I have my dream producer! BIC would not be possible without Michael Rozon. He pushes me, sometimes to the point of insanity … but this always leads me into doing something better than I thought possible. Besides being a world-class producer, he’s a great musician and as much as I hate ‘music theory’, his knowledge has proven invaluable. Number #2 on my ‘dream list’ is Tim Palmer (The Mission, Tears For Fears, Tin Machine, Robert Plant, HIM), and we have been blessed to have him do several remixes on our ‘beauty re-envisioned’ release. Tim is also onboard for the next ‘remix’ record (currently dubbed ‘Out Of Chaos Comes …’ which we hope for a Halloween release). Not often do you get to work with the top-2 on your list!!!
If you could guest on someone else’s album, who would it be and why? What would you play?
I’d love to play guitar on the new Cure album.
What musical skills would you like to acquire or get better at?
I think my lack of being a guitar virtuoso has led me to creating my own specific style. Not sure if that is good or bad, but it is a fact. I have started to attempt to broaden my ‘guitar chord’ repertoire. I did use some different chord voicings on some of the songs on our new album.
Which other musician/artist would you date?
Ha! I married her! My wife Tish Ciravolo, who has played bass on several tracks on our debut album and co-wrote and sung the amazing ‘Look Up’. But if you are looking for dirt I’ve always had a slight crush on Shirley Manson 
Is there a band that if they didn’t exist you wouldn’t be making the music you make?
Wow, that’s hard to say. I guess I have to look at the bands that made me want to be in a band from my teen years. T. Rex, Slade, David Bowie and The New York Dolls. These artists changed my path from wanting to play football to wanting to play guitar. I quickly learned girls liked guys in bands more than jocks!
You are from the USA, what are the advantages and inconvenient?
I was born in a very musical town, New Orleans, but have lived in Los Angeles since the mid-80s. I think everything you could want is here … and that is a blessing and a curse. There is a lot of ‘phoniness’ in Los Angeles. You do need to weed through the fake people. I think technology has leveled the playing field quite a bit. Everyone now has a chance to be heard.
What are some places around the world that you hope to play with your band?
In the beginning, I never looked at BIC as a ‘live entity’, but I have begun to wonder both ‘how’ and ‘what if’. I think BIC has a lot of fans in Europe … so I would say London, Rome, Paris and Berlin would be a great way to start. Time will tell.
When is the next album/EP due?
Our new full length ‘The Storm Before The Calm’ will be released on May 22nd, which coincidentally is World Goth Day. It is available on 180g vinyl (including a LTD Edition Black and Blue vinyl), CD and Digital. You can order any and all from our BIC STORE (www.beautyinchaosmusic.com)
Some artists you recommend.
I think any one artist that is part of our family is very worthy of delving into their individual catalogs. Ashton Nyte has made some glorious records, as has Evi Vine. We have some great singers on our new album that might not be as much of household names as some on our debut… but they sure as fuck should be! I really implore everyone to check out what they have done, as it is stunning.
Anything else you want your fans to know?
As I got on my soapbox about the lack of ‘value’ placed on music. I ask that everyone realize that Spotify and the likes do NOT allow artists to continue to make music. It is their touring, merchandise and physical product sales that support them. If you like a band or artist and you would like to hear another album from them … go see them live. Buy their T-shirt but above all . BUY their music. This is really not just in reference to BIC, I sincerely mean it for all Indie Bands.
