This is, without a doubt, the most unusual estate I've come across. The 2001 home, in Muscle Shoals, AL, was clearly custom built for owners with very specific taste. 4bd, 5ba, 10,207 sq ft, $9.9m. Check this one out.
I guess you could call it rustic, but some of the details are confusing. The main staircase, as you can see, has tree limbs snaking through the plaster in an effort to simulate natural growth.
There's a massive stone fireplace in the open concept living area. I would imagine that the ceiling is meant to be rustic, but it also looks like a bamboo hut.
I'm not sure what this room is. The chandelier and velvet draperies make it look like a dining room.
The kitchen has very interesting cabinetry.
Intriguing kitchen island. It's a little close too the stairs, though.
This is the hallway headed toward the primary bedroom. Look at the shutters. There're such shallow niches, I don't know what the purpose is.
Large room with sliders to the terrace.
This is a very large en-suite.
Deep tub.
So many doors.
And, here's a very large closet/dressing room with a makeup vanity. So, this is a main floor primary suite.
At the top of the stairs, we're actually in a bedroom, now. It's very open.
This bedroom also looks like a primary, b/c it's so big. This platform would be where the bed goes. Facing the bed there's a fireplace, plus several niches in the walls and more doors.
The en-suite is very large. Looks like a fireplace above the tub.
You don't have to take the stairs, b/c there's an elevator.
This room has a nice big fireplace and doors to the terrace.
And, the baths are gigantic. The water is still in this hot tub.
This might be a family room.
Now, we're on the lower level.
Swinging saloon doors open to a kitchen.
Rustic home theater.
Outside there's a large waterfall feature.
The house is on Wilson Lake and has multiple decks with an outdoor kitchen on the top.
There are 60 acres of land.

List: The Oldest Bars in Las Vegas
Atomic Liquors at dawn in 1993. Photo by Valentin Wuebben.
Tracking the oldest standalone bars in Las Vegas is a complicated by the matter of a few of them changing names, locations, or having fuzzy math in their own history. This list is not carved in stone but as far as I can tell the standalone bars 50 years and older are ....
ATOMIC LIQUORS (917 Fremont) – opened 4/17/54. We have a longer piece covering Atomic’s history and sources for this date.
DINO’S LOUNGE (1516 S Las Vegas Blvd) – They’ve had this name since ’69, but the bar dates back to this location as Ringside Liquors since ’53, and at a previous location since the late 40s. (The last 4 digits of Dino's phone number date back to the 40s.) Their motto “Getting Vegas Drunk Since ’62” refers specifically to the business’s incorporation date. '53, '62, '69 are all correct dates depending on the details.
HUNTRIDGE TAVERN (1116 E Charleston Blvd) – circa ’62, after starting at a nearby location, 1320 E Charleston, in ’54. Founder W.L. “Buzz” Holst and family opened several drug stores and bars including the next one on this list.
DECATUR LIQUORS (546 S Decatur Blvd) – ’63
4 MILE BAR (3650 Boulder Hwy) – ’63
TAP HOUSE (5589 W Charleston Blvd) – opened as Wild Bill’s Bar in '65. It went through a few names in the 70s and has been known as Tap House since ’85.
CHAMPAGNE’S CAFE (3557 S Maryland Pkwy) – opened under a different name in ’66; Champagne’s Cafe since ‘96. It was originally Sundown Liquors and Cocktail Lounge opened in ’66, a liquor store up front and a lounge in the back. It was combined into one room that exists today and was previously known as Jerry’s Inner Circle (’68), Huey’s Saloon (’77), Jerry’s Saloon (’87), Ole Inner Circle (’93), and Champagne Charlie’s.
FRANKIE’S (1712 W Charleston Blvd) – Frank August opened Frankie’s Cocktails in '68. It’s been known as Frankie’s Tiki Lounge since 2009.
HARD HAT LOUNGE (1675 S Industrial Rd) – ’70. Their “Est. '62” motto makes sense as a reference to their ’62 building and the beloved ’62 mural in the bar which came from its previous location under the name Bourbon Street Lounge. The building was home to The Coffee Pot and Squaw's Corner, until the owners of Bourbon Street Lounge moved here and opened Hard Hat Lounge.
STARBOARD TACK (2601 Atlantic St) – also opened in ’70 according to some records, or ‘71 at the latest. Their website says “since ’72.”
Honorable and/or controversial mentions ...
Pioneer Saloon (Goodsprings NV) – Not in the City of Las Vegas, but without a doubt the oldest bar in Clark County, Nevada.
Gold Mine (Henderson NV) – Also not in the City of Las Vegas, "Hendertucky's Oldest Tavern," was licensed to Henderson councilman Giles L. Franklin in Sep. ’65.
The Hideaway Tavern (3369 Thom Blvd) - since the '90s. “Friendliest bar in town since ’62,” is their motto, and some have gone further to say the building itself dates back to the 1800s, having been relocated from the ranch house at today’s Old Mormon Fort State Park. There was a building relocated from the old ranch, but it was built in the 50s. In ’63 (not ’62) the old ranch house was demolished, and a newer portion built for a restaurant was relocated to Thom Blvd, where it reopened as Lorenzo’s under ownership of Larry Lapenta. Through the 60s-90s it was also known as Old Ranch House Supper Club, and Larry’s Old Ranch House – then it was demolished. Larry’s Hideaway opened in the 90s in a new building, with another new addition in 2000. The changes can be seen in USGS aerial photos. Clark County Assessor dates Hideaway to ’93.
Double Down Salooon (4640 Paradise Rd) - ’92. There was a bar here called John John’s Cocktail Lounge here in ’74, then it was called Dreamworld, The Advertiser, and Omar Khayyan. Throughout the 80s it was an Italian restaurant.
Sand Dollar Lounge (3355 Spring Mountain Rd) – The motto “Est. ’76” may refer to the building complex. Sand Dollar Lounge opened in ’83.
Missing any?

Doctor Who report!! We are all caught up with NuWho and in time to watch the new season when it comes out!! mission accomplished, It took us around 6 months total and we loved every minute of it 🥰
Now that we have watched all eras I can share our tastes and opinions nobody asked for under the cut 😌
We can confidently say RTD's era is our favourite and for Doctors 10 (and 14) followed by 12, but honestly there isn't a single Doctor (or Master!) that we didn't love.
We've also started rewatching the first four seasons now with more context and there is just something so special about them. They almost feel like a different show from all the later ones. The silliness and the way the story doesn't take itself seriously at all until all of a sudden it does and then the pain hits you twice as hard because of it. How with just with a line or deed and it's implications the Doctor can be so unbelievably inspiring. The way the narrative seems to place you in the role of a companion trying to catch up with the Doctor and figure him out yet never quite managing to do so creates this distance but also admiration and reverence in you too and you can't help but adore him flaws and all. It has just the right amount of room for every side character and relationship to develop and feel human and the right amount of exposition to keep the pace quick and don't hold your hand. The glimpses behind the doctor's cheerful childish façade into an unsettling calculating alienness and immeasurable trauma but also a weary wisdom. The complete selflessness to the point of martyrdom. The reckless irresponsible acts of devotion from both the companions and the Doctor. The near apotheosis of the companions the closer they get to him. The contagious feeling of awe and wonder and hope for life. The way it's so unabashedly centered around love of every kind 😭 ARGHH I don't know man there is nothing like it!! Ultimate comfort show for us, just.. healing really. There is so much more I can say and gush about but I'd be here typing all day so I'll draw more about it instead!! We would also like to get started on classic Who soon! and try to get our hands on the audio episodes and comic books and all the extra stuff as well 😊
We also watched more David Tennant works since the last report!
Blackpool was hilarious, infuriating and horny, the singing was a choice but overall so fun!! The Escape Artist was great, very sad and tense, would have loved for it to be longer, these miniseries are always so good but so short!! Mad to be Normal is so underrated? we enjoyed it a lot!! RD Laing's portrayal was so compelling, it's beautifully shot and the 60's setting is really immersive and well done. Einstein and Eddington was also really good, incredibly accurate historical setting!! the costuming was fantastic, one of the best I've seen!! These last two films are biographical and sort of no plot just vibes so maybe this is why they are not everyone's cup of tea but we enjoyed them very much. David just never misses, I'm sure we can watch anything with him in it and we will love it no matter what lmao what a guy 😭
Anyway that's all for now! I hope you are all doing well, spring/autumn is almost here! best bits of the year 😊

By Mary Van Beusekom, MS
New findings from two studies have tied use of the antiviral drug nirmatrelvir-ritonavir (Paxlovid) to a reduction in COVID-19 hospitalizations and death, as well as to faster resolution of symptoms and less use of healthcare resources.
Benefit seen only in older patients For the first study, published in Clinical Microbiology and Infection, a Medical University of Vienna–led research team compared the effectiveness of Paxlovid with that of the antiviral drug molnupiravir (Lagevrio)—and with that of not receiving an antiviral—against hospitalization and all-cause death from January 2022 to May 2023. Participants were adults with mild to moderate infections and one or more risk factors for severe illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant.
"The oral antivirals nirmatrelvir-ritonavir and molnupiravir are the mainstay treatment for Covid-19 in non-hospitalised adults at increased risk of severe disease," the study authors wrote. "Both oral antivirals were approved at the time of the study period (2022/2023) for the treatment of non-hospitalised patients with mild-to-moderate Covid-19, but the current National Institute of Health guidelines favour nirmatrelvir-ritonavir over molnupiravir."
Of the 113,399 eligible COVID-19 patients in the retrospective cohort study, 10.7% received Paxlovid, 9.5% received molnupiravir, and 80.0% served as untreated controls. Over 96% of participants were previously infected with or vaccinated against COVID-19.
A total of 0.43% of Paxlovid recipients, 1.4% of molnupiravir users, and 1.13% of controls were hospitalized within 28 days (risk difference [RD], -0.7%; Paxlovid vs control RD, 0.26%). No Paxlovid recipients and 0.13% each of molnupiravir users and controls died.
The estimated risk of hospitalization was 0.57% in Paxlovid users and 1.09% in controls (adjusted RD [aRD], -0.53%). The estimated risk of death was 0.0% in the Paxlovid group and 0.13% in controls (aRD, -0.13%).
The number of patients needed to treat to prevent hospitalization and death was 190 in Paxlovid recipients and 792 in controls, respectively. These statistically significant aRDs were seen only among patients 60 years and older.
The estimated risk of hospitalization in the molnupiravir analysis was 1.36% in the molnupiravir group and 1.16% among controls (aRD, 0.2%). The estimated risk of death was 0.12% in molnupiravir recipients and 0.14% in controls (aRD, -0.01%).
"Among outpatients aged ≥60 years with Covid-19 in an Omicron-dominated era, treatment with nirmatrelvir-ritonavir was associated with a lower risk of hospitalisation and all-cause death within 28 days, albeit with wide confidence intervals and high numbers needed to treat," the study authors wrote.
"This finding was not observed in molnupiravir users and younger nirmatrelvir-ritonavir users. Future studies are needed to better define target populations that show greater benefit from treatment with nirmatrelvir-ritonavir," they concluded.
Proportion of patients seeking care slashed 73% The second study, a phase 2/3 randomized clinical trial published today in Clinical Infectious Diseases, also found protection against COVID-19 hospitalization and death in adults receiving Paxlovid and demonstrated a faster resolution of symptoms and lower use of healthcare resources compared with a placebo in high-risk patients.
The research was led by researchers from Pfizer, which developed Paxlovid. The drug was given to 977 symptomatic COVID-19 patients, while 989 were given a placebo, at 343 sites in 21 countries from July 2021 through December 2021, a Delta-predominant period.
Paxlovid significantly shortened the time to symptom relief (median, 13 vs 15 days; hazard ratio, 1.27) and resolution (16 vs 19 days; HR, 1.20) through 28 days and cut the number of COVID-related medical visits by 64.3% and the proportion of patients seeking care by 73.2%.
In total, 0.9% of Paxlovid recipients and 6.4% in the placebo group were hospitalized, for a relative risk reduction of 85.5%. Hospitalized Paxlovid recipients had briefer hospital stays, and none required intensive care or mechanical ventilation. Fewer patients in the Paxlovid group needed other COVID-19 treatments, and none died by 6 months, compared with 15 in the placebo group.
"The importance of having effective COVID-19 treatments such as NMV/r [Paxlovid] to reduce burden on healthcare systems, both ambulatory and hospital based, should not be underestimated," the authors wrote.

Please delete this if it's too nosy, but weren't you getting a degree in nutrition? What happened?
It's not too nosy, people are asking about it because I've talked about it a lot!
So the deal is that I am having trouble finding nutrition programs accepting second bachelor's students that are both A) Local and B) Affordable.
When I tried to apply in the spring there was only one state school accepting second bachelor's applications for nutrition students and it was about 500 miles away from where I live (and since I can only afford to live in CA because I'm renting from family, moving out of this house isn't an option unless I'm moving to a state with a lower cost of living).
There's at least one out-of-state school and two private schools that are accepting applicants from all kinds of students, but I have looked at the average income of registered dieticians and decided that I am not going to take out loans of $30k a year for this degree.
So what I'm doing now is waiting to see what local state schools (if any) are accepting second bachelor applicants to their nutrition programs in the fall.
I also have the option of possibly applying for a chemistry degree (some local schools are accepting physical sciences majors but not biological science majors as second bachelor's and it is possible to apply to a master's program in nutrition with a BS but you have to make up the nutrition program requirements while you're in grad school or between acceptance and starting the graduate program), trying to finish that, and then applying for a master's program once I have a BS.
I'm currently enrolled in classes at my community college for the summer and fall terms that will benefit me whether I'm able to apply for a bachelor's program or not.
At the moment my plans/options are:
Wait until fall term, apply to any local nutrition programs, wait to hear back and spend the terms until I hear back fucking around and getting a silly associate's degree for the lulz. (Potentially become an RD after 2 years in undergrad and 2 years in a master's program - finish that program about 4-5 years from now)
Wait until fall term, apply to local chemistry programs, wait to hear back and spend the terms until I hear back taking as many chemistry classes as I can. (Potentially become an RD after undergrad, take gap classes to make up prerequisites - finish that program about 5-6 years from now)
Figure out that no programs are accepting 2nd bachelor's students and go to a different community college to start working on collecting certs (1-2 years for an Associate's in network security, 1 year for a certificate in Windows administration), take a few classes at my current school to finish silly associate's degree for the lulz.
The community college that I'm looking at if the other options fall through (which seems pretty likely) is much more of a trade school than my current school and offers a nutrition certification program that focuses more on food safety and commercial kitchens whereas my current school only offers what is functionally a GE transfer degree with some pretty basic nutrition classes on top of it so I may just also try to get the nutrition certification while I'm doing computer stuff and get a silly associate's for the lulz.
So basically I would love to continue working toward a nutrition degree but I don't think it's very likely that that's going to be an option I can realistically afford. There's a part of me that's like "apply to cal state chico, try to take classes online as long as possible and live in a van for a couple semesters" (because that sounds more survivable than 60-90k in loans) but if that's the barrier to entry this is a dream that I'm okay letting die.

(Incoming: Verified Hater Post RE: Veilgu@rd)
Inquisition was playable at least once. (I played it twice.) Veilgu@rd, however... isn't fun for me at all. There is very little that appeals to me, and I'm not particularly motivated to finish.
I hear it gets good in ACT 3 (that its great, in fact), but - as someone who believes games should be fun - that's unacceptable. I refuse to endure hours upon hours of a virtual slog fest just for it to 'get good' 60 at the end. That's ridiculous.
Even the early game felt like work, like I was just getting through quests to grab the next companion or get to the 'good part.' It's a game - every part should be 'the good part.'
There should be a narrative hook that drives me forward and makes me *want* to finish the quests, even if the location isn't my favorite or the current focus isn't on the main plot. Everything just feels so repetitive and leaves me with so many questions about the world. Are normal people just ziplining in Treviso? Environments should tell a story and the only thing I'm getting is that Northern Thedas is wild about Ziplines.
It's no secret that my favorite game in the franchise is DA2. Perhaps it's hypocritical to have such heavy criticism about things feeling 'repetitive,' but I don't require innovative gameplay or master level quest design to enjoy something - all I want is a good story. DA2 gives me that. I can play the same Hawke and make the same choices over and over and still have fun. In origins, I want to explore all the different choices. Even inquisition gave me the story of how my Inquisitior takes to leadership roles and how the power their have impacts others..!
But i's very clear this game has a target audience that I don't fit into: I love the lore of Thedas, I value my world state, love companion interaction, and feel no sympathy toward Sol@s...
I knew from the start this may not be the game for me, but I still did everything I could to maximize my enjoyment:
I designed a Rook as a doppelganger of my Hawke because I thought it would be cute and would add extra flavor to interactions with Varric, planned to romance Lucanis for the Anders parallel (also a Zevran parallel for my Warden) picked the warrior class...but I feel like I was given an empty bucket and no amount of excessive headcanons can fix this lol
I feel like there's nothing here for me in Veilgu@rd:
The best thing about the game is the combat and Neve's character design.
The gameplay progression, the level design, the dialog, Rook... it's not giving the 'return to form' I was promised.
Like, at some point in the early game were Rook says something about Templars, and Neve says, 'This isn't the south.' But my girl is from Antiva. This dialog makes sense for a player new to the game, not a character who lives in this world. It's the small stuff.
And like, a first I thought, it was me that maybe I wasn't in the video game mood. But then I played the Sims and Baldurs Gate 3 this weekend, and I had a blast.
It's a shame. I wasted 60 dollars I could have spent on a seafood boil, but alas. Maybe I'll slog through it little by little so I can see this 'amazing fantastic super special awesome' ending one day.
I hope ME5 is an actual 'return to form' for Bioware because this was a mess.
#but anyway#if you enjoy it that's good for you#but these are my thoughts#im going to go back to BG3 and make yet another Tav#im excited for the new subclasses#my favorite druid and ranger subclasses will be put in the game?#its just the game that keeps on giving
