My OCs for @jayrockin's Runaway To The Stars! Drawn by the fantastic @translunaryanimus, Who has just posted a short comic with them as well as two of his own OCs!

In alphabetical order we have:

Aalok (she/her, they/it) - The ship's AI, here we see her in her preferred RC unit, that little toy robot on Maristel's shoulder. They acquired a functionally infinite supply of this toy when an entire container full of the product was recalled and left in the distro center. For reference they are 10cm (~4 inches) tall. When not in an RC unit Aalok represents itself as a monogram of its name. Since they have so many spares, it's not unheard of for Aalok to intentionally destroy or loose one of the units in service of a joke.

Maristel (They/Them) - 'Captain' of The Screwloose. (Info here) They take over piloting whenever Aalok lets them, but primarily they deal in negotiations with clients. While no where near as good as someone who specifically studies the languages of other sophonts, they can speak (or sign) all the common languages well enough to ingratiate themself and their crew to clients. Their pronunciation is great, but word choice and sentence construction is often lacking. Maristel is a unique GMH and also a biomodder, they take the attitude that: "If I'm already gonna be a weird croc-taur, might as well have fun with it and do what I want!"

Tuuvarii (she/they) Tuuvarii is the engineer for The Screwloose, They have a hormone imbalance that makes it so they're permanently 'in spring' much to the horror of other Avians, but it doesn't really get in the way often. Maybe because of this, maybe not, Tuuvarii is also a Carnalist, and almost always paints carnalist colors over her bright markings. Both her parents are Diver Avians but somewhere up the family tree there's a skimmer so she ended up with a more prominent crest and larger ears than most other Divers. Ears which they've done some modification to, circle cutouts and grafting skin from the webbing on their hands. Probably gonna post detailed timelines for these goobers once they're finalized and also a short story about the group meeting Hearts that I'm currently writing with @translunaryanimus. But until then I'll say this, the dynamic between these three is: Maristel & Tuuvarii- Besties Aalok & Maristel - Worsties Aalok & Tuuvarii - "Hello fellow shitster"

Reading Roundup: "Partners"

Hey y'all! My goal for the year is to read more often, so I think I'm gonna start posting book reviews in addition to the other fannish stuff on my blog. My review for this novel is under the cut!

I picked up this novel while on a trip with my husband in Tombstone, Arizona. I haven't seen much info about it online yet, probably because it's a few decades old and it appears to be self and/or indie published.

Apparently, the author of "Partners" cowboyed professionally for years, and his main goal with the novel was to tell an authentic story in a contemporary western setting that resonated with his own experience. Wayne lists his work as a combination adventure and romance novel, but I would argue that the romance elements were very back-seat. I'm willing to bet that far more pages were devoted to the bounty hunt plot and the platonic friendship dynamic than any of the romances.

I read the first edition from 1987 (not the newer edition from 2005). This version of "Partners" came with a sticker referencing old western bootleg laws. Neat! I feel lucky to have found a copy, seeing as I doubt this book ever got widespread release-- and I don't live in the west.

Anyways ! Here are my thoughts on Mr. Wanye's novel:

Firstly, the easy-going chemistry between the two leads is definitely the soul of this novel. I really, really enjoyed RC and Curtis-- in pretty much all of the strange situations they got caught up in.

The novel's prose is pretty good too. This may be a strangely specific compliment to give, but I think "Partners" is at its strongest when it comes to describing old people. Scenes at the nursing home and at the grandparents house were incredibly vivid. Every elderly character in this novel pops off the page like a real flesh-and-blood person.

The descriptions of the natural landscapes and the horse care & tack procedures were also quite vivid, but sometimes to the point of feeling a bit formulaic. As much as I love detailed descriptions of locations, sometimes just listing the species of shubbery felt too face-value.

But the weakest part of this novel is definitely the plot. It feels kind of aimless and meandering, like a strange amalgamation of western subgenres thrown together. It's hard to explain, but this feels like a story that was written without an outline. I figure the author sat down at a typewriter, week after week, writing the chapters piecemeal-- without an overarching idea of why or how they were going where they were going.

Lots of elements (like RC's dad, wanda, the fixed up shack, gold panning, etc) have almost zero payoff by the end of the book. Removing these characters/locations wouldn't affect the plot in the much, so they end up feeling extraneous. The chapters are fun to read while they're happening, but the big-picture plot certainly could've been stronger. Though I was invested in the characters and the prose regardless of what was happening, everything outside of the bounty hunt plotline felt like an episodic event with not much of a resolution.

Tldr; character-driven, likeable leads, multiple sections with colorful prose... but a meandering, low-payoff plot. I definitely recommend "Partners" if you'd like to read some cowboy slice-of-life, though.

Donnie is a turtle duck, but doesn’t have as many duck traits visible here other than some feathers. He did have webbed fingers, but does not anymore, and he also isn’t allowed to lock his lab door anymore. Of the bros, he is the second most turtle-y, and the second least duck-ish. Also, rather than all of the turts being made in one batch, they’re the surviving members of each of the batches they were a part of. Donnie and Leo are from the only batch with more than one who made it.

A lot of the important stuff lore-wise for this story will revolve around the fact that Korra died in the avatar state, if only briefly, that the Republic City spirit world gate exists, and the Avatar’s function as a bridge between worlds.

The turtles only exist because the Avatar disappeared, eventually leading to a war between humans and spirits, and the turts were made to act as a border between the human world outside of republic city and the spirit world. They are, essentially, trying to stop anyone from crossing the bridge of the RC gate.

The outer area of republic city is considered fully neutral, and is guarded by the foot clan(which in this world are like a bit of an offshoot of the Kiyoshi warriors paired with the white lotus, which I know is very different but ehhhh my AU, my creative liberties) and the turtles. The turtles mainly focus on keeping humans out of the gate’s area, and the foot clan are there to help whenever necessary and to stop the occasional spirit from leaving. Most spirits are content staying in the spirit world, let alone exiting RC, so they’re able to patrol the outside of the city fairly easily.

Now there are mutants as well! They aren’t spirits, but people who spend too long in the RC area. The initial mutations are the reason why the human-spirit war first started, and why RC is now considered a neutral zone. You can’t force the humans who’ve been severely changed to leave, as many of them would get shunned, but most people didn’t want anyone else getting mutated, so it was eventually declared a neutral zone. People from both sides can come in and out of RC, but unless you’re a mutated human or a descendant of one, you shouldn’t stay longer than a few weeks.

Mutants are notable because while they no longer appear fully human, some of them can do some kind of bending, and the ones more human-appearing might be able to do a certain degree of energy bending, even if they’d been completely unable to bend beforehand. Sometimes they end up having a combination of the two. The mutants that can bend from one of the four element groups are also usually able to bend in the spirit world, which yk, is a completely new thing.

The turtles are benders. Donnie is an airbender, Raph is an earthbender, Leo a waterbender, and Mikey a firebender. No Draxum did not do anything to cause their bending, in fact the human genetic source he used to create spirit-human-turtles is a non bender, who was chosen for that very reason, as well as his family’s history of being somewhat spiritually sensitive and being a renowned fighter, even before he ended up changing from staying too long in republic city at the behest of his beau(said beau, big mama, turned out to be a traitorous backstabber who actually wanted him to turn so that he’d have to stay->he’d cling to the connection he had(her)-> and she could then get him to stay in her grand hotel, for the simple price of being a gladiator with literally nowhere to run to. Yeah. Splinter does not like his ex.

When Draxum got him out, Splinter was immensely grateful, and actually quite willing to help with the earlier experiments. His mutations were still mild enough that Draxum considered the samples he had a good basis for the human-spirit experimentation, and Splinter insisted on helping beyond just donating genetic material to the creation of the turts, but also insisted he would help them grow up well. He was then more devastated than Draxum when Raph was the oldest survivor of the experiments. He agreed to continue helping with the kids on the condition that Draxum wouldn’t make any more, but receded into himself from the grief until Raph was around twelve. Raph still doesn’t trust Splinter and has a deep resentment for what to Raph was an abandonment when he needed his pops the most. Yes, he had Draxum, but he was cold and distant beyond helping with basic necessities until Donnie was old enough to help with his various other experiments and Mikey started showing a remarkable skill for energy bending. Draxum tried, but couldn’t sufficiently help with the more human emotions. Splinter didn’t try at all, not until Leo started to come out of his shell more. And that made Raph even angrier, as he felt like he hadn’t been enough of a reason for his dad to try, but his irresponsible, careless, unserious brother was. Raph had done everything he could for his brother and both his dads. But none of them seemed to be willing to do half as much for him, except maybe Mikey, which just made it worse, because Mikey was the youngest and shouldn’t have to worry about Raph.

April enters the scene when Raph is angriest himself, his dads, and at the twins. She is the first person older than him who he feels cares for him the way he’s cared for his family since he was small, but before he can accept this care, he has to acknowledge that she isn’t a threat to his family.

I nearly cheered when The Elder’s Quest peak chapter actually talked about Oakfur, the cat that has been left to his own devices for well over a decade now. I thought they were gonna kill Oakfur off between books but I do hope he has a shot at being given an actual character like some of the RC cats. I’m actually really glad Oakfur and Mosspelt weren’t entirely forgotten cats, so consider this an appreciation post for them both!

Being apart of the series for that long, both Oakfur and Mosspelt have seen and survived many tragedies and events. Oakfur specifically has survived the aftermath of Brokenstar’s bloody leadership and the sickness that followed, The Kin, The merge of ShadowClan into SkyClan, Mudclaw's Rebellion (as a participant!)

Mosspelt has survived Splashtail’s reign, the death of all her children, The Kin’s raid on RiverClan (which she actually walked away from unlike some of her clanmates who were forced to stay), the fire on RC and the closed border situation.

They both witnessed giant plot events like The Great Journey and the destruction beforehand, The Battle with the Dark Forest, the drought, The Tigerclan situation, BloodClan battle, and many MANY historical bouts of disease.

Basically every large plot point after Into The Wild.

Some more info about Oakfur

-He’s a GIANT DICK. He canonly calls a RiverClan cat a slur during Star and gets his ass handed to him, he also watched Berrykit struggle in a fox trap. Like, he’s been an asshole for YEARS. He has these nice moments here and there but in his most recent appearance he hasn’t learned.

-Oakfur has been alive since the first arc, he was an apprentice RIGHT after Brokenstar’s rule, he’s seen the rise and fall of 5 leaders (do remember that Tigerclawstar and Nightstar’s leaderships weren’t long lasting, and Rowanstar didn’t have the longest reign either.)

- He’s mostly known for being thrown into a tree by Fireheart

- He’s trained four apprentices; Tawnypelt, Smokepaw, Ferretclaw, and Tawnypelt’s son the 2nd Tigerheartstar!

-Speaking of sickness, he’s survived being very ill several times unlike the other cats in his age bracket who died long ago to similar circumstances.

-Oakfur has actually been given a lot of opinion agency as a bg charcter, having joined Mudfur in his rebellion and years later leaving The Kin on his own accord. Which gives us a lot of questions about his morality. I think the many Erins forget about him and just use him as a vessel for SC hate but they… just kept doing that. Therefore I’m taking his character at face value. I feel like Oakfur is one of the very few remaining cats who has the early other-clans-are-enemies mindset. He acts a lot like cats in long ago super editions that had a very survival of the fittest attitude in contrast to how the Clans are now. Current era clans are a lot closer to how the DOTC clans were at the end of that series than to how they were in Tallstar’s Revenge.

Now Mosspelt!

Mosspelt is a RiverClan elder. She’s been given more focus in Frostdawn’s and in Nightheart’s POVs while they were in RiverClan.

- She’s survived 5 leaderships; Crookedstar, Leopardstar, and Mistystar’s being long healthy reigns while Splashtail’s ended quickly and Icestar’s has just begun. She was also a survivor of the Kin’s raid on RiverClan.

- She was a foster mother to Feathertail and Stormfur, though a mysterious queen named Greenflower was supoosed to take that role. She later vanished from everything as a handful of first arc cats did. I should write about her too. Mosspelt was actually super friendly towards Graystripe, and loved fostering his children. Though she did have maternal children; Dawnflower, Robinkit, Woodkit, and the late RC medicine cat Willowshine.

- Mosspelt had 3 apprentices: Swallowtail, Pebblefoot, and Perchwing.

- Mosspelt is most likely the oldest cat in the Clans right now, being a queen in Fire and Ice. Mistystar may have been impossibly older than her but she got nine lives which extended it quite a bit. Mosspelt survived with only one AND outlived her.

-Mosspelt doesn’t take a hostile role in the RC conflict, making her one of the only RC cats with clean paws.

-She survived a direct fox attack

Y'know, I still think of myself as something of a Noob at this whole "Christian" thing, but I think the problem is that my online religious discussion spaces have a lot of clergy/seminarians/Church Nerds in them.

Like I knew the names of those heresies off the top of my head--I opened the wikipedia pages just to double-check I was spelling them right. What the actual fuck.

That said, I'm incapable of thinking about Trinitarian heresies without hearing a leprechaun in my head yelling, "That's modalism, Patrick!"

(Modalism is also called Sabellianism)

In any case, as the joke goes, if you think you understand the Trinity, you're probably doing a heresy, and the heresy was defined and named before, like, 1000 CE; the point of the Trinity is that it's a mystery and we can't really understand it.

(This is the Trinity. Obviously. /half joking)

Wikipedia's list of Trinitarian heresies is based on the definitions put forth by the Roman Catholic church, but since most of them were decided before the Great Schism (much less the Reformation), plenty of non-RC churches define them as heresies as well, including all the Anglican churches.

To the degree that the Episcopal church has a set of normative beliefs* (none of which are required of anyone except, theoretically, ordained clergy**), the list is here, but if you dig into the site's glossary you can find a lot of the major heresies listed by their names and defined as heresies.

(*"What do you mean you don't have a set of beliefs" We're not a confessional denomination, we're united by liturgy more than anything else hence the Book of Common Prayer, I talked about it a bit here; something something lex orandi, lex credendi; something something orthopraxy; something something via media; ask a handful of Episcopalians whether the bread and wine at the Eucharist are Jesus' body and blood and most of them will answer something about the Real Presence, but ask us to define that and most of us will smile and say it's a Mystery, and a few people will smile and then say something like "Well I believe in consubstantiation as opposed to transubstantiation but it's not like our salvation depends on those details." (**This is what I get for hanging out online with Church Nerds; a lot of the younger ones who self-define as "inclusively orthodox" have extremely strong negative opinions on priests and bishops who openly doubt, for instance, the physical resurrection or the virgin birth. I have mixed feelings on this--doubt is considered normal and fine in the Episcopal church. But I do feel odd about clergy preaching that "eh maybe those things didn't happen," because I do feel like faith should sort of be the goal?? But then it also seems arbitrary to believe the Gospel stories are literal when we don't insist on literalism/inerrancy in any of the rest of the Bible. Can you tell I've thought about this a lot. Anyway don't get me started on the "inclusive orthodoxy" movement or I'll be here all fucking day--the tl;dr is that I mostly agree with them but they can be smug dicks about it and it puts me off.)

Murder Drones Reconstructed Copper - Nori

Here’s another big info dump from my Alternate Future Au related all towards Nori.

Also a reminder that this Au that is based off only on information and Facts from episode 1 to 4 and is not connected to my post canon Au. (How to tell the difference between the Universes. pay attention to the Fankids. Bolt and Latch = RC. Sub = Doorman Chronicles)

Just wanted to make that difference clear. Now on to the Nori Information.

She and Yeva were a part of a human project in relation to the solver.

With knowing how dangerous the solver drones could be against the company they were top priority to kill.

After trying to fight off J she eventually gets the drop on her and infects her. Then J berates N for not helping out and calls him useless and terrible. (Basically the J flashback in episode 1 but with more detail.)

Then she makes her way back to the colony with the Solver programmed Active to the fear and panic of Khan which

But because of her having part of her code from the Dissasembly drones her Body regenerated back

She vowed to not come back to the colony until she had a answer to stop this code from infecting her and Her daughter.

My name is Mikaylyn! I've been in the choices fandom since August 1st 2023, I love editing, writing and reading in my free time alongside playing video games like Roblox, sims, and the visual novel apps. So now that you know the characters' full names from the last post, you can look them up if you want. It's time to catch you up to speed on what the characters call each other. As for who wants to go by full name, not everyone on this list, that's for sure. On this chart, you'll see the different teams and their call singe on the map that Babs made to use to keep track of the Robins. (More on the map later, you know it's a in progress thing) So on to the nicknames, Full hero names, Hero nicknames, Map names, and Fake civilian identity names. I'll demonstrate with Timothy here. Then we got Emma Robyn. It's the fake civilian identity their hero can take on for a limited time. ps. Emma Robyn is the identity Tim met Bruce under, where he mistook Tim for Janet. Why? Cuz of that fake Civilian identity, they swap a feature with their "dance partner", Tim, and his partner swapped hair color. A dance partner is the one person with whom they are set up to make combo attacks. They will have matching Bows and glasses, so let's see if you can spot who is partnered with whom. ;)

Personality: Brave of heart, selfless, and a fighter until her last breath, most consider Jill a badass. She's a hard worker who dedicates herself wholly to the fight.

She doesn't present herself as much of an open book and can have a somewhat prickly exterior at times. Her attitude often leans toward "Fine, I'll do it myself." She doesn't sugarcoat much and is no-nonsense in many ways. If she perceives you as being in her way, you'll either get shoved aside or shut out.

If Jill can try to save a life, she is almost always guaranteed to try. Those she's lost have left her with a heavy sense of guilt that will always stick with her. If she had been faster, done better, she thinks, things could have turned out differently.

Jill was raised by her father, Dick Valentine, a notorious thief. He brought her up to be in the same business as him and taught her everything he knew. When she turned twenty, her father was finally put behind bars. He had a moment of clarity and told Jill that having one Valentine behind bars was too many, eventually convincing her to find a different line of work. She moved to Raccoon City and joined S.T.A.R.S. She worked hard and dedicated herself to the position, earning some minor acclaim in the process.

One day, she was sent up to the Arklay Mountains with her fellow officers to investigate the lack of response to the Bravo team, who were looking into what was perceived as cannibalistic cult killings at the time. After seeking refuge in a mansion from a pack of zombie dogs, Jill uncovered a lab belonging to the Umbrella Corporation. They were making bioweapons, many of which killed her comrades before she escaped. Jill tried to expose Umbrella, but the Chief of Police secretly had a deal with the corporation. She was written off as making far-fetched claims, things were covered up, and she was placed on suspension.

Verses:

We walked into a nightmare. (Pre-Resident Evil film) – Either follows Jill during her time in S.T.A.R.S. or the Mansion Incident. Can be shifted to the game universe.

Where it really went to shit. (Apocalypse) – Takes place during the Raccoon City Incident. Jill has to get out of town before it's blown sky-high. Can be shifted to the game universe.

I never pictured the world like this. (Post-Apocalypse + Extinction) – Following the death of Angela Ashford, the survivors of RC split apart. Jill travels North America as the T-virus ravages the world, aiding others when she can.

My body wasn't my own. (Afterlife + Retribution) – Begins a few years prior to Afterlife and also encompasses the Umbrella Prime Incident in Retribution. Jill has been captured by Umbrella, equipped with a P-30 Scarab Injector to augment her strength and keep her complacent, and retinal implants that feed her direct orders from the Red Queen, her AI superior. She acts as the security chief of Umbrella Prime and occasionally goes out to fulfill capture orders.

Just so you know, this ends here. (The Final Chapter) – Jill survives the explosion in the White House and sticks with Alice. It seems like they're the only people left alive not affiliated with Umbrella, but then they end up in the remains of Raccoon City, finding a group of survivors there. They all travel down to the Hive to try and release the antivirus.

this askblog takes place after the triple affirmative, but before... well... the events that tear the local group apart [whispers being stolen from their can]. in general, the nature of this askblog bends the dynamics a bit for them to make all of them accessable and connected [normally the group is much more fractured]. so don't take any of this as completely canon or face value! but i'm using it to iron out characterization, have funny interaction antics, etc.
