Ravenous is Haunted

Within the lore of Ravenous, eating people causes you to “absorb [their] spirit,” but what does that mean in practice?

Ives mentions that eating someone brave gives you a surge of bravery, which is exactly how Boyd goes from too scared to move to single-handedly capturing the enemy command. The spirit of his fellow soldiers and specifically his commanding officer compel him to do it. But we know that this personality shift is not permanent, it abates. However, I believe that there are other more subtle influences that remain. 

There’s a whole collection of things Boyd, Ives, and Hart do and say that mirror the actions and words of the people they’ve eaten…

The protectiveness that Boyd shows towards the Fort Spencer crew after Ives arrives as colonel is a new trait for him and highly reminiscent of Reich’s protectiveness towards Toffler. From the moment he’s stuck with Ives at the fort, Boyd also immediately decides to murder him, the thing that Reich died furious at him for not doing, and never strays from this mission at all. Boyd and Ives both headbutt each other in their final fight, a Knox fighting move, and Boyd also attempts to strangle Ives at one point, which is Reich’s. Another example that I like is when Hart says to the chickens he’s feeding “run away! run for your lives!” which is what Toffler died doing. These are all small moments in isolation, but together they form a compelling picture. 

For another thing, you have Boyd mentioning to Hart near the end the “nightmares” he’s “still” having about Reich, Cleaves, and Knox. These aren’t just random trauma nightmares, they are specifically about the three people of the Fort Spencer crew that he’s eaten. And, considering how strongly Hart reacts to the mention of this, he is likely experiencing the same thing. Since it is canon that they have actually ABSORBED these people by eating them, I don’t think it’s a stretch at all to call this a haunting. 

Put these together and you have the people who have been eaten haunting the cannibal characters at night and maintaining at least some sway over them by day, often without them even realizing it… Fun stuff!

As far as Ives goes, I think that he is less affected by this phenomenon than Boyd and Hart are. He’s been eating people for much longer than they have, he has no moral compass whatsoever, and he has a very strong personality, so he’s not gonna let a little haunting get to him. That being said, who knows what quirks of his personality we might be able to attribute to people he’s eaten in the past if we knew more about them? I also think that his assumption that he is unaffected by the people he eats is a part of his downfall, and I’ll explain that in a moment. 

The last thing I want to talk about is the bell because that’s what REALLY gets me mmmmmmmmmmm… SO! During Boyd’s fight with Ives, there’s a moment where Ives has fled the room they were fighting in and Boyd doesn’t know where he is, so he’s checking behind all these random doors and not finding him when he hears a bell ringing in the courtyard. He goes out and sees the ringing bell but no one near it. Instead of going towards it where he knows Ives is likely waiting for him though, he walks towards the barn, as if in a daze. When he enters, he sees the bear trap and gets an “Aha!” look on his face. 

Now, who do we know who is associated with both that bell and a bear trap? It’s Reich! He is the only person we ever see ring that bell and (in a deleted scene) he uses bear traps as target practice, shooting at them to snap them shut while Boyd watches. So, at the very least, we can say that Reich indirectly inspires Boyd in that course of action. 

BUT, because I am me, I’d like to take it a step further by proposing that, since Reich is haunting both Boyd AND Ives, he influences Ives to ring the bell (with Ives not consciously thinking anything more of about than “this will surely get Boyd’s attention >:)”) and then influences Boyd to walk over to the barn instead of immediately continuing the fight so he can show him how to end it once and for all. Boyd asked Reich to “tell me what to do,” and Reich answered him!

i like to imagine each of the perfect court have little rituals they do before they start a play. like i think kevin double taps the base of his racquet against his foot, or like neil tightens the bandana he wears, and jean rolls his shoulders back, and riko touches his number 1 tattoo. like i just feel like each of them would have little things they do that help them get more focused. especially when they get angry! like those movements become more aggressive and jerky like !! this is so real to me !!

What had they done?

What hadn't they done...

Those were the questions that churned in Azrael's head. He was dizzy, disoriented from his Fall. His body was wrapped up in bandages, tended to by the Goetia. He was squinting, everything burned, everything hurt.. He'd lost so much of his golden blood that the avian demons tending to him were shocked he wasn't passed out.

Thus no doubt spoke of the fortitude of Angels, they weren't human after all. Something like blood-loss wouldn't take them down.

The fact they'd let anyone in the room at all was nothing short of a miracle. But it was on Paimon's orders.. rather for the staff to get OUT of the way of Lucifer's 'Knight' charging in.

Then again, it wasn't every day an angel fell, especially an Archangel.

Azrael's condition wasn't.. ideal, however. Sure they had bandaged him up, but there were glaring, open wounds on his back from where four of his six wings were torn out. Cuts that spoke of shattered glass scoured his body, arms and legs burnt from the fall, and a face that showed that he'd yet to stop crying...

He'd only just run out of tears left to shed.

He couldn't even look up at the one speaking to him, red eyes blurred with pain focused on the floor as his remaining pair of wings lay slumped at his sides. Burned of the raven black feathers they once sported, held together by a burning red membrane much like a bat. His halo.. gone, shattered upon impact, a crown of horns now instead took their place.

"Sera... she.." He barely managed to cough out. Azrael's voice was hoarse from his weeping.

"She kept.. she kept overruling me. S-she kept changing my verdicts.." Azrael's body shook.

"First Adam.. he w-was meant to go to Hell. But.. she said no." The newly Fallen Archangel crossed his arms, hands grasping into his bandaged forearms.

"T-then Abel.. poor sweet Abel.. She tried to say he did something t-to cause his murder.. Then Cain.." A hiccup.

"It kept happening. She kept.. she kept trying to do my job.. Th-the job I was made for." Everything he was. The very thing Father created to oversee the necessary evil of Creation.

Death.

An angel created to bring it upon the living, to keep balance in creation. To ensure life ended, and started anew. In a never-ending cycle. To act as the judge and jury of souls into the Afterlife.

"I.. I had enough. I was sick of her taking my work away from me.. I.. I bit her. I lashed out." On the table next to the newly fallen's bedside were two curious objects. A set of golden, radiant weighing scales.. and a black book with a golden skull and motifs.

"She attacked me, tore out four of my wings... cast me out in anger. I took my treasures with me... I wouldn't let her have them. Sh-she would abuse them. She would abuse the tools F-Father gave me." His voice petered out into a whimper at this point, Paimon looking on from the door-frame.

'.. Says his name is 'Azrael'...' He spoke quietly, mainly for Michael's ears. 'The rumored 'Angel of Death'. To think Sera would stoop as low to cast out Death itself from Heaven.'

oh anon, he definitely did dye it blonde to get more chicks! not that that’s a bad thing either! and now that we know for a fact that he likes blondes (one of my last reblog where he specifically said “i like blondes”) it makes more sense that he dyed it to relate to his fellow blonde girls! i kinda just like him with the darker hair a bit more… idk he just looks cuter in my opinion!

random facts about zatanna that you don't have to know, but maybe you should :

she's rich. she gets a lot of money from her shows, and she owns properties in san francisco and gotham. but she also donates a lot of her income and pays every crew member much more than what is usual. she also makes sure all of her performance animals get the best of the best . she says they are artists, too.

she also does free shows for any children that recognizes her and asks. she loves encouraging them to do magic and gives them safety talks because, well, she one time didn't and had to fix a family's garage ( long story ! )

her favorite punishment is transforming people into animals. she does it to exes who bother her, or people who are assholes in general. she... she does transform them back, uh... it just takes a while...

she has a very outgoing, flamboyant personality even when battling. only case when that's not true is when lives are at stakes. zatanna's energy is uplifting.

zatanna never blames only one person if their relantionship falls apart. she blames herself too, if not a lot more. that is the case of relantionships that matter, though. she is very honest when that's not the case, which is often. truth is, she is always afraid of bringing people too close. magic is dangerous, as it is complicated, it shatters things around it sometimes : as is dealing with her fame. but if someone enters, she fights for them with all she has.

if you lose her, it takes twice the previous effort to win her back. and she loves that.

The sudden assault from the golden simian draws out a indignant noise from him, his cheeks getting effectively squished by the Monkey King. A soft hue of pink blossoming against his features in response, his own claws shooting up to grab at the offender’s wrist. It was a fruitless attempt to get him to stop as he rolled the squished cheek in his palms — drawing out more sounds from the shadow demon. 

Annoyed chitters and chirps were given as his tail lashed back and forth behind him, conveying his irritation at Wukong’s actions. Fur fluffing and cheeks blazing in embarrassment alongside the irritation.

“S-Stop that you asshole — !!”
