A exasperated sigh leaves the shadow's lips, not seeming all that phased at the sudden display. Though his tail does curl at the end as his fur fluffs up in the moment — his ears were sensitive to more than just sounds after all. Taking every ounce of will power and strength in him not to make a peep of sound at how nice it felt or shiver in delight. Oh no, he would not live it down if he did.

He will never understand the king's need to ALWAYS go for his signature ears. It was utterly baffling why he ever paid them this much attention in the first place.

She told some of the others — MK, Pigsy, even Macaque — that being a vessel felt like being asleep. That there's no memories, not really, of the time she spent a monster's puppet.

It's bad to lie, she knows.

She hasn't been able to stop looking at Sun Wukong, especially now that the others have left. She wonders if it was the same for him — he was controlled but she was inhabited and she's too young to know where the line between them draws — but she wonders if it was close. If he could feel her, clawing / crawling around his chest, his limbs, could feel her thoughts in his head, could feel the sick sensation of something other than him under his skin. She doesn't know how to stop staring at him. She's not sure what she's looking for.

His gaze moves to her, and his head tilts when he sees her staring. He must not like her expression. She can't feel what it is.

"Something wrong, kiddo?" he asks.

Bai He shakes her head, her hands tightening around each other in her lap. "No! I'm fine!"

His mouth thins. "Something is clearly bothering you."

Good girls don't lie. But she doesn't want the others to feel — sad for her. Or guilty. Or maybe she does want that, and that's even worse.

Those hands tighten further. Did his ribs feel like they were trying to crawl out of his chest, to make more space for her?

"Promise not to tell the others," she says, quiet.

Something about the old king's countenance shifts, but — he nods, after a beat, looking almost serious. "Promise."

Her eyes drop to her hands. Her small hands, that hadn't been her hands, but were always her hands. The small hands, that weren't her hands and were all at once, that did so many bad, bad things — worse things than lying.

If it hurt for him like it did for her, is that her fault?

"When she took you," Bai He whispers, "I tried to stop her."

She'd more than tried. She'd screamed inside the monster's chest — inside her chest, that was not her chest — and thrashed and begged, please, no one else, please no one else, please don't hurt anyone else no one else no one else. PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME HURT ANYONE ELSE!

It hadn't been worth anything. It hadn't been worth anything when she tried to save Macaque, and it hadn't been worth anything when she tried to save Wukong, and it hadn't been worth anything for anyone else. She couldn't stop her body from breaking.

She blinks hard and feels tears track down her cheeks, and when the small girl's eyes open, Sun Wukong is crouched before her, expression plaintive and aching. What expression is she wearing? She still can't feel it.

He says — something, she can't hear it past the roaring in her ears, past the way that on the bad days her body still doesn't feel like hers, past the knowledge that if it was scary and sick and agony for him like it was for her then it was HER HANDS THAT CAUSED IT.

"I'm sorry," and it's a gasp and a sob and a misery for both of them.
