Dear sir: How do you visually distinguish a Mauser rifle from a javelin? Also, what do they mean precisely by commissariat? What about mamelon? And ravelin? Could you teach me what progress has been made in modern gunnery? Sincerely . O-8 Anon
The javelin is pointy. In the time of Queen Victoria (when Penzance takes place), the commissariat was primarily a financial office though it did still arrange supply for the army. Mamelons are rounded hillocks, ravelins are detached outworks. Modern gunnery now is a positively delightful mix of mortars, howitzers, and rocket artillery.
But nothing will save you if you start whistling the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore.
Man, I need to go see one of the G&S three at the opera.

Okay, so I'm gonna ask a lot cuz you know I'm in love with your legacies so 6, 7, 8, 10, 15, 19, 20, 27, 29, 32, 33, 34, 37 and 39. sorrryyyyy 😝💖
6. Already answered.
7. Favourite spare.
I can’t pick, so I have 4:
Coraline (Gen 5 Fryres)
Raven (Gen 7 Moody)
Harvey (Gen 3 Fryres)
Oakley (Gen 5 Moody)
8. Favourite spouse.
Kieran (Gen 2 Fryres). Without a doubt, the sweetest boy.
10. TOP 5 favourite couples.
- Stevie and Alistair
- Oakley and Mark
- Coraline and Raven
- Heidi and Kieran
- Sparrow and Magnus
15. Favourite name used on your sims?
Currently, Wren. I think it fits him perfectly and ties into some story points that I haven’t explored yet.
Also, Locksley for the Fryres founder. His whole name is a play on things from Robin Hood; the town of Locksley is where Robin operates, and he is friends with Friar Tuck. So I thought it was a fitting nod 😅
19. Who of your sims has the best style?
Ambrose always looks the most put-together, and I really like Ophélie’s current look.
20. Who is the best genetic mix of their parents?
Heidi was probably the best mix, and maybe her granddaughter Elsie.
27. Do you have this one OTP that stands out among the other legacy couples? Tell us about them!
Well, it has to be Raveline, doesn’t it?!
They’re just so perfect for each other and when I came up with the idea to cross them over, I didn’t realise how much I would love them together!
They constantly do random romantic interactions and they’ve now got FIVE CHILDREN. (I’ll try and get posting them soon).
29. Have you had a sim that you fell in love with right away?
A few: Ridley, for sure. Harvey. Oakley.
And a couple you haven’t really met yet...(one I posted the other day, and one is my icon).
32. The hottest sim?
See my icon for details.
33. The prettiest sim?
Minerva.
34. The most unique sim?
Maybe Raven or Wren?
37. Imagine if you had a chance to meet one of your sims. Who would it be?
I’d love to get coffee with Stevie and talk about books.
39. Your favourite non-romantic relationship in the legacy?
Jasper and Ridley. Obviously Ridley had a hard time with his feelings in the past, but they’ve always been so close and had such a strong bond.

Rewind: The Frontpage Magazine, 1989 - 1997
The Frontpage magazine began as a fanzine for the famous Frankfurt discotheque Dorian Gray and reported with depth and passion on the German rave scene of the 90s. The magazine's team viewed techno as a way of life and for nearly a decade recorded the evolution of EDM and house music. Frontpage immersed itself in the subculture with commitment, wit and flair and set itself apart from other publications in the 1990s as an influential voice for German rave culture.
It's easy to imagine Berghain being the birthplace of revealing parties powered by the recurring beat of techno. Looking back on the liberal history of electronic music in Germany, however, few clubs are as important as Frankfurt's Dorian Gray. From 1978 to 2000 the famous discotheque, inspired by Studio 54 and uniquely located at Frankfurt Airport, hosted wild raves and loud parties, including the electronically controlled night techno club. Frontpage was born here in 1989 as the Frankfurt club scene veteran and techno club founder Alex Azary initially financed the publication as an advertising medium for his club night. Over time, however, the scope of the magazine expanded and differed from similar magazines such as Raveline or Groove, which mainly talked about techno music. While Frontpage reported on trends, artists and the latest drops, it also put a strong focus on the techno scene and its engulfing culture. This endeavor ultimately led the cohort of contributors and editors to Berlin to pave their way into the progressive, emerging scene.
When the financing of Azary began to dry up, the founders Jürgen Laarmann and Stefan Weil saw the opportunity to relocate Frontpage from Frankfurt to Berlin. Here the group of technology lovers found a new kind of energy, in which established clubs were exchanged for abandoned warehouses and the sounds of Frankfurt's well-formed techno scene were exchanged for acid house sound. Although the newly reunited city had already embraced underground punk and techno movements, the merging of East and West offered new opportunities for countercultures to thrive, and techno-fueled raves broke out of the capital, defining the '90s as the “German Summer of love ”. During all of this, Frontpage was always on the pulse of the redefinition of the techno culture that was going on in front of them. Partying was a full time job for the magazine's team and techno was the mantra they lived their lives by. Frontpage's enthusiastic reporters published stories about emerging sub-genres, interviewed famous artists and presented the latest releases and trends as well as the mood of the scene. Mixing serious, chin-stroking reviews with candid editorial voices, the team wholeheartedly welcomed the hedonistic decadence of the raves. With columns like “Shopping on Speed” , “Hardcore Decadence” and, perhaps the most famous,“Octopussies,” in which a group of female contributors were given a monthly budget to attend parties and document their wild stories, showed the magazine its edge.
In addition to its content, the magazine also excelled through its design thanks to Art Director Alexander Branczyk, who took over the post in mid-1992. Frontpage's pages contained erratic typography and shaky images, and were tainted with the ecstasy of rave and techno culture. During this time Jürgen Laarmann developed into a kind of philosopher of the techno scene, and when he spoke to Spiegel in 1996 , he considered that "techno is a kind of cultural principle", as for Laarmann EDM (electronic dance music) a potential, an opportunity for people to shape their lives with a feeling of freedom. Despite this feeling, others had less romantic views of Laarmann and Frontpage. Because some scene nesters claimed that the magazine used its platform to market its own projects through others. Regardless of the motifs, Frontpage dominated the art of avant-garde reporting with its biting articles and well-known style and undeniably shaped the German rave culture until the magazine's final publication in 1997.

so ok, an oc list. these are all the ones i still do stuff with. organised by storyline because that makes the most sense obviously. these are the characters who have survived the test of time u.u (tfw i like an idea but the cast is like ‘you all suck bye’ lmao)
tl;dr goes like this:
venin, blacklight, osprey, aphid, daeddrin, dribblerawr + support cast
tarryn and callana (my children <3) + their support cast
piper and ravelin (the only two survivors of a storyline i liked but hated the rest of the cast)
and the few who were salvaged for other things but aren’t really worth putting here bc they belong to my sideblog. deets under cut
not a story at all™
Venin, Blacklight, Osprey, Aphid, Daeddrin & Dribblerawr
i’m like 90% sure they all have their own tag, and if they don’t then they will. i’ve been slowly (agonisingly slowly) making some halfway decent art for each of them which you can find here. there are a few still missing but i’m getting there.
theirs isn’t a story so much as it is a sandpit-esque world for my creative purposes. they’re all fully fleshed out characters and i use each of them as an excuse to practice world-building, society development and other assorted stuff. daeddrin and aphid both have a bit of detail on their cultures in their ref posts but venin’s is painfully vague i’m sorry. i should probably do one up for him it’s sort of interesting (species split in two, one thinks it’s superior, enslaves the other, stuff happens, venin was raised a slave and was Angry™ about it which is his primary motivation for demolishing slave trade throughout the world and messing with jerks is the tl;dr).
mostly i use them as the basis for rpg characters for games. usually i play as venin or blacklight bc they are the best ngl, i love a good stealthy archer/mage character. yes pls. and blacklight is a sassy bitch which is always fun.
oc otp™
Tarryn and Callana. no refs for them. they are my children and i love them so much. can’t remember if they have separate tags but i think they do. one day i’ll do art of them.
they’re sort of unique in that they do technically have a story and world they inhabit but i enjoy throwing them into Literally Every Au Ever™ so they have “alter egos” that sort of match up to a real earth world kinda thing. in their story, magic is seen as a bad thing. tarryn is a witch, an untrained, not-part-of-the-order kinda deal and should probably be killed on sight. callana is a princess who definitely doesn’t want to marry that one jackass and runs away bc she’s exactly the sort of girl who doesn’t face her issues. she nearly dies, tarryn saves her. they’re gay. and calla does eventually go back and face her parents and mess up a lot of stuff. no one in this story is white.
in real world au scenarios, i change their names to be less fantasy. tarryn is chinese and calla is a complicated mix of french, egyptian and iranian (as i try to reflect the equally complicated mess that is her family in the source story).
they have a fabulous support cast. tarryn is pure and callana is a disaster waiting to happen. did i mention i love them? bc i do.
that one typical fantasy story™
pretty sure it’s obligatory. the actual story sort of ran out of steam a while ago, for me. or rather it got waaaay too complex to even be a viable concept so it’s back to the drawing board i go with it and honestly nothing is safe, except two of the supporting cast that i actually love a lot.
piper is that one small girl who says ‘i’ll fucking fite u mate’ to everyone and she means it. she will actually punch everyone. she’s so angry. she’s bi as all hell but also bad at talking to people so she’s absolutely the kinda girl who sees a cute person and just, flails a little bit.
ravelin is mellow like you wouldn’t believe. he doesn’t like conflict, of any kind, he avoids arguments and fistfights with equal fervor and just wants folks to be happy. he’s a soft optimist, a born mediator and probably thinks hugging piper is a good idea. also handles all his personal problems by making bad jokes.
also gonna real casually throw flight rising in here. a lot of the characters that developed on this site are based on characters that didn’t survive otherwise. like most of them. they are no less my children for being part of a pet simulator haha. (you will also no doubt notice that all the characters mentioned here are represented.) i have a side blog for these characters (and incarnations of the others). there’s a link in the bar on the left for the curious. there is other stuff there that’s v flight rising specific though so. ye have been warned.

Playfair Capital, the U.K.-based seed firm, announces $32M second fund
Playfair Capital, the U.K. seed investor, has raised a new $32 million fund to continue investing in promising early-stage tech startups.
The VC firm, founded in 2013 by Federico Pirzio-Biroli, who is fund II’s sole LP, is an early investor in the likes of Stripe, Ravelin, Thought Machine, CryptoFacilities and Mapillary.
Pirzio-Biroli recently re-located to Kenya, but will still act as Chairman of Playfair Capital . Day-to-day, the fund will be managed by Chris Smith, who recently joined as a Partner. He’s been an active angel investor for over ten years, and is taking over management duties from Georgia Taylor Foster, who is said to have resigned after five years with the fund for health reasons.
Smith previously worked for fast growing B2B telecommunications company Plan.com, where he held senior roles including Sales Director, Head of Tech/BI and Head of Product Development. He has made 14 angel investments across the U.K. and U.S., and counts three exits to date: Nearbuy Systems (acquired by RetailNext), along with publicly listed MoPowered and Bidstack. Prior to that, he worked in the City in various roles.
To date, Playfair Capital says it has backed over 50 founding teams, and plans to invest the new $32 million fund over the next three to five years. The firm is targeting early-stage companies across all sectors, with a particular focus on deep tech — e.g. artificial intelligence, machine learning and computer vision — and B2B SaaS and marketplaces, which have traditionally been areas of strength for Playfair.
Its initial cheque size is typically $500,000, although I’m told that the Playfair team like to engage with founders at the earliest stages of a startup’s journey, including occasionally investing smaller amounts at the pre-seed stage. I expect that approach is reflected in a number of household names backed out of the firm’s first smaller fund.
Adds Pirzio-Biroli in a statement: “I’m delighted to be announcing Chris’s hire and the launch of Playfair’s Fund II. Our new investment team has great hands-on experience with startups and a track record of backing founders early and enthusiastically. The U.K. has proved a rich hunting ground for Playfair Capital, providing 80 percent of our current portfolio. With the new fund we will seek out startups that use deep tech and data to create a defensible proposition that has longevity. We are hugely excited about opportunities in the deep tech, SaaS and marketplace segments where we have already demonstrated success”.
Meanwhile, Smith will work with Joe Thornton, who has been with Playfair Capital for almost four years, and Henrik Wetter-Sanchez, who joins as an associate from Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Thornton joined Playfair in early 2015, having worked at Google and Facebook. For the last three years, he has been Playfair’s Head of Talent. He’s continuing to support portfolio companies with recruitment but will also be sourcing and leading Playfair investments.

KONEKT ASIA FM Showreel Ep.050 Fritz Kalkbrenner
Growing up in the shadow of real socialist prefab buildings in the Lichtenberg district of Berlin, Fritz Kalkbrenner was a couple of years shy of being able to participate directly in the anarchic techno mayhem that followed right after the fall of the Berlin Wall, when new possibilities and freedoms opened up in East Berlin within a short period of time.
At the beginning of the 1990s his older brother Paul and his best friend Sascha Funke went crazy for techno beats, while hip hop artists such as Eric B. & Rakim, KRS One and Wu-Tang Clan were Fritz’s heroes who could do no wrong. He studied their flow, memorised hundreds of lyrics and learned how to tell stories – all basic research that would later benefit him.
At the end of the 1990s (in 1997, to be exact) he, too, was blown away by techno and turned into a devotee of the clubbing scene as did many others of his generation. Legendary clubs in Berlin such as WMF, Tresor and Suicide Circus became his haunts for doing a new kind of research. Partying feverishly, Fritz decided to start making music himself. One thing he knew for sure – his voice would be featured on the tracks. With the release of Forms & Shapes in 2003, a plaintive piece appearing on Sascha Funke’s debut album Bravo, his very first step as a singer immediately landed him a veritable club hit. Further collaborations followed with artists such as Alexander Kowalski, DJ Zky and Monika Kruse, but he never stopped honing his skills as a producer – on equipment that once belonged to his brother Paul. And soon, Fritz was ready for a live show.
In the autumn of 2008 the song Sky and Sand appeared on the soundtrack to the movie Berlin Calling, the first project Fritz and Paul worked on together. It made the charts, and both Fritz and his voice gained international recognition. Not only was his first solo production practically in the bag, but he also found likeminded individuals in the heads of the Suol music label, Chopstick and Johnjon, hip hop aficionados who immediately recognised Fritz’s artistic potential. The three of them quickly agree to start working on a maxi single and then go on to make a first album.
With the 2010 release of his debut album Here Today Gone Tomorrow, Fritz no longer stands in his brother’s shadow, but is celebrated for a soul sound is all his own. Something akin to Balearic guitar riffs meet rave tracks and warm house beats hover over a cinematic and melancholic sound. And rising above it all is Fritz’s voice. Here Today Gone Tomorrow makes the top ten groove charts of the year, is among the top five albums on iTunes and is voted album of the year by Raveline magazine. Fritz is also nominated for the Echo critic’s choice award. Since then, he’s been jetting non-stop from one club and festival to the next.
The tracks of his upcoming mix CD on the Suol label called Suol Mates, which will hit the scene in March 2012, demonstrate that his broad musical range spans from J Dilla, Pete Rock and Roy Ayers to Lawrence, Tom Trago and Robag Wruhme. Once again Fritz proves hip hop, soul and house are not opposites, but rather all planets in the same galaxy. A special highlight on the mix CD is his cover of Bill Wither’s classic song Ruby Lee.

Ravelin raises £8M Series B to use machine learning to fight e-commerce fraud
Ravelin, the London-based company using machine learning to help e-commerce companies fight and predict the risk of fraud, has raised £8 million in Series B funding. The round is led by BlackFin Capital Partners, while existing investors Amadeus Capital Partners, Passion Capital, and Playfair Capital followed on.
In a call with co-founder and CEO Martin Sweeney, he told me the new funding will in part be used for Ravelin’s expansion plans. This will include opening an office in the East Coast of the U.S., where the company is seeing increasing in-bound inquiries. This, he says, won’t merely be one or two sales people, but will be staffed properly, including posting one of Ravelin’s other co-founders there.
The company has also recently developed a product for Payment Service Providers, and says it will continue to invest in other capabilities complementary to its core proposition of charge back protection. These will include account security and risk prediction.
Launched in 2016, Ravelin has developed machine learning-based technology that helps online merchants and their payment service providers reduce losses to fraud and improve acceptance rates of orders. The idea is to do away with cruder, rule-based systems and use machine learning to negate false positives and give merchants more confidence accepting customers/transactions.
More broadly, Ravelin wants to be an invaluable tool in fighting chargebacks, account takeovers, organised fraud rings and terms of service abuse, which the company says it continues to be a multi-billion dollar problem for the online commerce ind
Sweeney tells me the future aim is to be able to identify different patterns of risk to personalise the customer journey accordingly. For example, a more riskier transaction may introduce greater friction in the checkout process as more security hurdles are introduced. Likewise, a less risky customer could encounter fewer steps, helping to increase conversions.
To that end, in the last year businesses such as eShopWorld, Just Eat, Kinguin, and Quiqup have joined Ravelin’s existing enterprise clients. “There is no greater endorsement of our approach than the companies we’ve been able to add to our portfolio,” adds Sweeney in a statement. “We’re proud that many of the world’s leading online businesses have chosen to work with us. We’ll continue to serve them well”.
