Where California politicians stand on Palestine
The majority of Democrats in DC, despite their voter base being overwhelmingly in support of a ceasefire, refuse to disavow the genocide in Gaza or call for ceasefire.
They are able to do this, to disregard the outrage of their constituency, because they feel certain that no matter how many letters we send, we will show up and vote for them when the time comes. They are certain their actions have no consequences.
Senator Alex Padilla received about $31k from Israeli lobby groups. He refuses to call for a ceasefire. This was his going rate to enable genocide.
Senator Laphonza Butler was appointed in Oct 2023 after the death of Diane Feinstein, who was pro-Israel. No campaign finance info on file. She refuses to call for a ceasefire. Perhaps she's waiting for her payout.
12/52 California congressional representatives are Republicans. None have called for ceasefire. Palestinian genocide is core to the Republican platform.
Of the 40 Democrat representatives, only 11 have called for ceasefire. The following CA Democrat representatives have called for ceasefire. They were not swayed by money received from Israeli lobby groups.
Jared Huffman, 2 - not swayed by $1k from Israeli lobby groups this election cycle, down from 13.5k and 9.5k in the last two
John Garamendi, 8 - not swayed by $500 whole dollars from Israeli lobby groups, down from 5k and 15k
Mark Desaulnier, 10 - not swayed by $1k, down from 4k and 4.5k
Barbara Lee, 12 - not swayed by $13.5k, down from 27k and just 4k in 2020
Ro Khanna, 17 - not swayed by $12k, down from 45.5k and 23k
Judy Chu, 28 - not swayed by $1k, down from 7k and 10.5k
Tony Cardenas, 29 - not swayed by 35k, down from 70k and 38.5k
Jimmy Gomez, 34 - received nothing this cycle or 2020, not swayed by the $13.5k Israeli lobby groups gave in 2022
Robert Garcia, 42 - has received nothing from Israeli lobby groups since taking office in 2023
Maxine Waters, 43 - has received nothing from Israeli lobby groups in the past 3 election cycles
Sara Jacobs, 51 - not swayed by $9k, down from $26.5k in her first election cycle
The following CA Democrat representatives have refused to call for ceasefire. The approximate amount they've received from Israeli lobby groups since 2019 (the price it cost to buy their endorsement of genocide) is after each name and district number.
Mike Thompson, 4 (24k); Ami Bera, 6 (46.5k); Doris Matsui, 7 (9k); Josh Harder, 9 (159k); Nancy Pelosi, 11 (92.5k); Eric Swalwell, 14 (54.5k); Kevin Mullin, 15 (0 - 19-22 data missing); Anna Eshoo, 16 (34.5k); Zoe Lofgren, 18 (22k); Jimmy Panetta, 19 (14k); Jim Costa, 21 (127k); Salud Carbajal, 24 (27k); Raul Ruiz, 25 (24.5k); Julia Brownley, 26 (47.5k); Adam Schiff, 30 (205.5k); Grace Napolitano, 31 (8k); Brad Sherman, 32 (132k); Pete Aguilar, 33 (315.5k); Norma Torres, 35 (14.5k); Ted Lieu, 36 (122k); Sydney Kamlager, 37 (15.5k - 22 data missing); Linda Sanchez, 38 (36.5k); Mark Takano, 39 (17k); Nanette Barragan, 44 (69.5k); Lou Carrera, 46 (12.5k); Katie Porter, 47 (152.5k); Mike Levin, 49 (143k); Scott Peters, 50 (34k); Juan Vargas, 52; (208.5k)
The Republicans will be trash regardless, but we cannot let our Democrats skate by thinking there are no consequences for supporting a genocide. They are slaughtering people with your tax dollars, Americans. It's time to get serious. It's time to tell these people that they cannot have our votes for free. It's time to start talking about primary opposition and third party voting. It's time to start exercising our power as voting citizens.

On November 15, 1889 there was the Proclamation of the Republic in Brazil through a coup. During the next 5 years Brazil was governed exclusively by the military and the period is considered a dictatorship.
We were born, as a republic, as a dictatorship.
From 1937 to 1945 we had another dictatorship, that of Getúlio Vargas, who was nicknamed Father of the Poor and Mother of the Rich. He is a controversial figure in Brazilian history because, despite being a dictator, he was and still is very popular. So much so that years later he was democratically elected and governed the country from 1951 to August 24, 1954, when he committed suicide.
Something I find very interesting about Getúlio Vargas is the letter he wrote, which gave his death a grandiose tone, like a hero who dies in a Greek tragedy. He portrayed himself as a martyr. In his words, "Nothing remains except my blood. I gave you my life, now I give you my death. I choose this way to defend you, for my soul will be with you, my name shall be a flag for your struggle.(...) Serenely, I take my first step on the road to eternity and I leave life to enter History."
Then there was the Military Dictatorship, which began on April 1, 1964 with the support of the United States of America, with the justification that they were protecting the country from the communists. It was a dark and violent period, marked by the loss of rights, torture, persecution, censorship. It lasted until 1985.
In less than 100 years Brazil has gone through three Dictatorships, none as inhuman and violent as the most recent one. And people ask for it back. They extol torturers as if they were heroes. I will never understand this. I will never accept that the first president elected by the people after Dilma, who fought against the dictatorship and was tortured, is the same man who said that Ustra, a torturer, was a hero.
But that's not the point. What I really want to talk about is the music produced in 1964-1985.
Cálice (Chico Buarque and Milton Nascimento).
“Pai, afasta de mim esse cálice”, translated to “Father, take from me this chalice” is a reference to a biblical passage.
Cálice sounds exactly like “Cale-se”, so the phrase is "pai, afasta de mim esse cálice" traduzido para “father, take from me this shut up”. A great pun, in my opinion. Here the “shut up” refers to oppression and censorship.
About the singers: both were censored several times during the Dictatorship. Buarque was exiled and Milton Nascimento was unable to see his son for almost 20 years, if he contravened these orders the military would kill his son.
Pra não dizer que não falei das flores (Geraldo Vandré)
This song is an invitation to popular revolt. No one was going to overcome oppression by carrying flowers. The idea of "peace and love" does not make a revolution. It does not prevent people from being tortured and killed. Geraldo Vandré also opted for exile. Fleeing the country was safer than staying.
"Along the fields there is hunger Even with abundant plantations And in the streets, Streams of doubtful people Who still take a flower As the strongest symbol of their convictions People who still believe that Flowers can put down the rage of guns
Come on, let's go away Because it's not wise to be waiting for The wise does not let the chance pass by He never waits for it to come
We see armed soldiers Some of them were ever loved, others were not Most are equally lost Holding a gun in hand In the headquarters, they are taught of That old pretty lesson 'To die for the sake of the Land' But to go on without an opinion"
Mosca na Sopa (Raul Seixas)
Raul Seixas wrote this song to mock the Military Dictatorship. He represented himself as the fly, because he always bothered the military. Raul Seixas was tortured and exiled.
“I am the fly that landed on your soup I am the fly that got here to abuse you I am the fly that landed on your soup I am the fly that got here to abuse you I am the fly that landed on your soup I am the fly that got here to abuse you I am the fly that disturbs your sleep I am the fly that is flying around in your room I am the fly that disturbs your sleep I am the fly that is flying around your room And don't even bother coming to kill me Cause I'm resistent even to DDT Because you kill one and then another one comes to replace me”.
There are many other songs, but I made this text without planning and I wanted to post it soon. Maybe I'll put others later. The translations of the lyrics of the songs were taken from internet sites, which I consider safer sources than I do.

Thanks for 100 hits on Not With a Bang and 300 hits on Looking Out for Me on AO3!
Although both stories follow the same courier, they take place in different universes so to speak. LOFM inspired me to write a full length fic (NWAB) so it's the same courier but different timelines.
NWAB:
Not With a Bang (23821 words) by ilostmypensandpaper Chapters: 7/? Fandom: Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout (Video Games) Rating: Explicit Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Craig Boone/Female Courier, Craig Boone/Original Female Character, Female Courier/The King Characters: Craig Boone, Arcade Gannon, Raul Tejada, Lily Bowen, Eddie (Fallout: New Vegas), Rex (Fallout: New Vegas), The King (Fallout: New Vegas), Original Fallout Characters, Female Courier (Fallout: New Vegas), Rose of Sharon Cassidy, Manny Vargas, Benny (Fallout), Mr. House (Fallout), Carla's Mom (OC), Carla Boone Additional Tags: craig boone/female courier end game, Developing Friendships, Slow Burn, Friends to Lovers, How Do I Tag, Healing, Friends With Benefits, Canon-Typical Violence, mostly canon i think, Amnesiac Courier (Fallout), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD, Trauma, courier has abandonment issues, Smut, Banter, Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms, Freeform, Mystery solving, Blackmail, will tag as I go, people b catchin feelings, potential love triangle, but not the cliche kind (hopefully lol), Love Triangles, Emotionally Repressed, Denial of Feelings, Friendship, Suicidal Thoughts Summary: Phoenix Vida-Jones truly thought that the world would end not with a bang, but with a whimper. Then, she was shot in the head carrying a platinum chip by a tacky city-slicker. Fortunately for her, she got fixed up with just enough memories to get her by on her quest for revenge. Guess the world doesn't end with a bang. What she wasn't counting on though, is the past she barely remembers coming back to haunt her as she plans to take down Benny and resolve the conflict at the Hoover Dam. Meanwhile, her developing and probably unrequited feelings for a mourning sniper have her conflicted and looking for love in other places. Enter: the King. Boone on the otherhand has enough trouble going on just keeping up with the group's antics, let alone the old wounds opening up as Boone is forced to face the past with the sudden presence of Carla's mom.
LOFM:
Looking Out for Me (2387 words) by ilostmypensandpaper Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout (Video Games) Rating: Explicit Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Craig Boone/Female Courier Characters: Craig Boone, Female Courier (Fallout: New Vegas) Additional Tags: Smut, Shameless Smut, Rough Sex, slight exhibitionism, Exhibitionism, Some Plot, Not much tho, Spanking, Doggy Style, Friends to Lovers, Praise Kink, NCR-Aligned Courier (Fallout) Summary: Nix, a courier, has been traveling with Boone for almost a year as they try to track down who shot her in the head. They have fought together, drank together, and even shared a cigarette over loved ones lost. Their uneasy alliance blossomed into one of friendship, but now Nix is beginning to want more. When the pair settle back down in Novac for a quick break, will Nix finally make her move where it all started? * First time posting on AO3 so go easy on me lol.

Libby Spotlight: Nonfiction eBook Picks for Hispanic Heritage Month
My Voice by Angie Martinez
In her current reign at Power 105.1 and for nearly two decades at New York’s Hot 97, Angie Martinez has had one of the highest rated radio shows in the country. After working her way up as an intern, she burst on the scene as a young female jock whose on-air “Battle of the Beats” segment broke records and became a platform for emerging artists like a young Jay Z. Angie quickly became known for intimate, high-profile interviews, mediating feuds between artists, and taking on the most controversial issues in hip hop. At age twenty-five, at the height of the East Coast/West Coast rap war, Angie was summoned by Tupac Shakur for what would be his last no-holds-barred interview—which has never aired in its entirety and which she’s never discussed in detail—until now.
Angie shares stories from behind-the-scenes of her most controversial conversations, from onetime presidential hopeful Barack Obama to superstars like Mary J. Blige and Chris Brown, and describes her emotional, bittersweet final days at Hot 97 and the highly publicized move to Power 105.1. She also opens up about her personal life—from her roots in Washington Heights and her formative years being raised by a single mom in Brooklyn to exploring the lessons that shaped her into the woman she is today.
Dear America by Jose Antonio Vargas
"This is not a book about the politics of immigration. This book––at its core––is not about immigration at all. This book is about homelessness, not in a traditional sense, but in the unsettled, unmoored psychological state that undocumented immigrants like myself find ourselves in. This book is about lying and being forced to lie to get by; about passing as an American and as a contributing citizen; about families, keeping them together, and having to make new ones when you can't. This book is about constantly hiding from the government and, in the process, hiding from ourselves. This book is about what it means to not have a home.
After 25 years of living illegally in a country that does not consider me one of its own, this book is the closest thing I have to freedom."
—Jose Antonio Vargas, from Dear America
The Far Away Brothers by Lauren Markham
Growing up in rural El Salvador in the wake of the civil war, the United States was a distant fantasy to identical twins Ernesto and Raul Flores—until, at age seventeen, a deadly threat from the region’s brutal gangs forces them to flee the only home they’ve ever known.
In this urgent chronicle of contemporary immigration, journalist Lauren Markham follows the Flores twins as they make their way across the Rio Grande and the Texas desert, into the hands of immigration authorities, and from there to their estranged older brother in Oakland, CA. Soon these unaccompanied minors are navigating school in a new language, working to pay down their mounting coyote debt, and facing their day in immigration court, while also encountering the triumphs and pitfalls of teenage life with only each other for support. With intimate access and breathtaking range, Markham offers an unforgettable testament to the migrant experience.
Always Running by Luis J. Rodriguez
Luis J. Rodríguez joined his first gang at age eleven. As a teenager, he witnessed the rise of some of the most notorious cliques in Southern California. He grew up knowing only a life of violence—one that revolved around drugs, gang wars, and police brutality. But unlike most of those around him, Rodríguez found a way out when art, writing, and political activism gave him a new path—and an escape from self-destruction.
Always Running spares no detail in its vivid, brutally honest portrayal of street life and violence, and it stands as a powerful and unforgettable testimonial of gang life by one of the most acclaimed Chicano writers of his generation.

The Wall Street Journal: A New CEO Says Employees Can't Work Remotely After All, and They Revolt
After insurance-industry company Farmers Group told employees last year that most of them would be remote workers, many made significant lifestyle changes in response to the policy. Some sold their cars, others expanded home offices or moved their families to new cities.
Employees reportedly threaten to quit after CEO backtracks on remote-work policy: 'I sold my house and moved closer to my grandkids'

Farmers Group announced changes to its remote-work policy, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Most employees have been told to work from the office three days a week, starting in September.
Since then, many employees have reportedly expressed frustration and anger about the change.
Workers at the insurance giant Farmers Group are reportedly threatening to quit or unionize after the company's new CEO backtracked on its remote-work policy.
Employees expressed their frustrations with the decision by flooding a Farmers Group internal social-media platform with more than 2,000 comments, The Wall Street Journal, which reviewed screenshots of the reactions, reported. Workers who commented on the platform said that they were considering leaving their jobs or forming a union, with one saying that they were hired with the promise that remote work would be allowed moving forward, the Journal reported.
"I sold my house and moved closer to my grandkids," another worker's comment read, according to the Journal. "So sad that I made a huge financial decision based on a lie."
Farmers Group CEO Raul Vargas, who took over the position in January, announced last month that most employees would be required to work from the office three days a week, the Journal reported.
The Farmers Group spokesperson Carly Kraft told Insider over email that the company would shift to this hybrid-work policy in September. She said these employees had three months' notice to "adjust and make arrangements." The hybrid-policy change would impact roughly 60% of the company's employees, Kraft wrote.
The policy change was "a blended approach we believe will allow us to continue offering the flexibility that we all value while reaping the benefits of the office environment," the statement continued. "Our intent is to foster greater collaboration, creativity and innovation while also providing better opportunities for learning, training, mentoring, career development and organic interaction."
Vargas's decision mirrors that of a growing list of companies calling workers back to the office — some of which have enforced return-to-office mandates. Last week, Meta said employees would be required to work three days a week in-office starting in September. Amazon employees recently staged a walkout to protest the company's return-to-office plans.
Executives who have announced these changes have emphasized a belief that working in-person would boost worker productivity and collaboration. After workers grew accustomed to flexible-work policies during the pandemic, however, these policies are prompting an outcry from many workers across industries.
