so I’m playing Round Around The World and in the happy ending of the party route 😭 when America and England are slow dancing outside 😭 and America talks about his feelings for England despite not being ready for the “I love you” 😭 and he mentions their accidental almost-kiss the night before 😭 and explains to England that he really wants to kiss him but make it a real, intentional kiss and that this kiss belongs to him because all those years ago when England and America first met England gave him his first kiss as brothers on his cheek, and now it’s America who wants to give England the first non-relative kiss on his lips 😭❤️

Build-a-Veteran 1.2, for creation of higher-ranking shapeshifters in Legacy W:tA

It’s that time again. Time for you, the Storyteller, to stock a sept with werewolves. Looking for guidance on how to stat up a werewolf past character creation, you turn to the books…and find your options are few. You see 2002’s Werewolf Storytellers Handbook Revised has a system, but it’s clunky and seems to scale oddly, producing very powerful fostern and elders that feel weak. There’s the table at the start of Rage Across the World (W20), but it’s giving you enormous bundles of experience and that seems like it’s going to take an awfully long time to deal with. Sure, you can just wing it, but wouldn’t it be nice if there were a system behind all those werewolf characters whose stat blocks you’ve seen sprinkled throughout the books?

Another game. You’re looking to tell a story for experienced werewolves, movers and shakers of the sept or even the Garou Nation. Can’t wing it here - you need a set of standardized rules for your players. Once again, WSHR’s system seems to have some strange scaling problems, and RAtW’s piles of experience seem geared toward players, but they’re finding the prospect of dealing with all that about as intimidating as you did, and you’ve got no idea how you’re going to audit their work. And now the Theurge player is asking how many rites they get to know and you’ve got no clue what to tell them.

Build-a-Veteran is here for you, as a Storyteller or a player. This system is specifically designed to produce characters that wouldn’t look out of place in a Werewolf: the Apocalypse sourcebook, and to do so in a fairly quick and painless manner. (Goodbye version 1.0, hello version 1.2! Where'd 1.1 go? Don't worry about it! This version is redesigned to put the user's experience first, and includes a little guidance for the Fera. Let me know if you have any suggestions or questions!)

When soren gets the door shut behind him, he recounts the heads of the students inside. Seven. Good, no one was left outside in the fire.

Then, he recounts the pages left in his tome. It's serviceable - he knows how to make each spell count, but there was no scenario in which it would outlast the hordes of monsters outside.

his plan was simple and risky, but there was no plan he could conjure that would see all eight of them escaping with their lives. This plan relied on the stupidity of the beasts outside and the ability of these students to remain quiet. Time would only tell if he'd chosen correctly. Not every plan soren made could have a perfect success ratw, especially not when children were involved.

he does not barricade the door. The shifting of material against it could be enough to draw attention, and for now his plan is to be very quiet and convince whatever beasts that stalk them that they are not here at all.

he moves away from the door as quietly as he can. he's already told the students to be as quiet as possible, too, though that has had lesser success. One girl is stifling her sobs by shoving her hands into her mouth as much as she can fit, and another boy is shushing the moans of an injured girl.

Her leg had been caught by the claws of one of the horrors, and soren knows the shape of this injury. It is, for the most part, fatal, and he isn't sure if there's anything that can be done for her, but he can try. he knows something of battlefield medicine, and so he removes his belt and wraps it tightly around her leg, securing it as close as it can go.

It hurts her. he can see this in her face, and hear it in her whimpers, but the bleeding abides.

he sets his knuckles against her brow. She is clammy and cold. She is pale. She is not going to make it.

"What's your name?" he asks quietly.

She shudders out a shapeless breath, her brown eyes flickering over to meet his gaze. She tries again. "B-bethany..." she croaks out.

soren nods. "Bethany, you will be alright, okay? You only need to hold on."

The corners of her mouth twitch upwards. Her hand finds one of soren's and gives it a weak, bloodless squeeze.

soren may be able to lie for her benefit, but he can't force a smile for this.

In the end, she isn't alright. The six other students stare at soren with an unvoiced question - the chaotic scene of the monastery falling around them removing their ability to speak. he doesn't particularly care if they judge him. As far as he can tell, she faded away with hope. Whether or not it was futile doesn't matter in the end; this, he believes, is his good deed.

Once she's gone, her friend breaks into wails, and soren watches the door warily, putting his body between it and the students. In his heart, he knows he isn't doing it primarily to protect them - he'd just like to go first, because he would like to go.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter.

The group spends hours in that cramped room, half collapsed, hunched over and quiet. The first sound that comes is the shifting of a great weight. soren doesn't know if the monsters ever vacate the monastery, because some one (the monsters, or the students) cause the ceiling to collapse on them.

For soren's part, he's no stranger to injury. he's had holes in his chest that make breathing hurt, before, and he's been slammed between the shields of armor knights. The stone crushing his ribcage is somewhere in between the two, without the glimmer of hope or a name to choke out in a beg for assistance.

he dies to the sound of other students crying out from similar injuries.

he knows he dies, because the next thing he knows he's awake, and being lifted from the rubble. Some one asks his injuries and goes to examine him before he can reply. he hears, distantly, a relieved voice shouting out:

"Bethany! I thought you'd died!"

So, soren reasons, something brought her back. That same something brought him back, and didn't even ask for his permission.

Even if his chest heaves and struggles against every breath he tries to pull through his lungs, he weaves whatever tapestry his silver tongue is capable of to pull himself away from the healers and the infirmary and all of that.

he thinks of Ike, buried oceans away, solitary, on a hill overlooking a valley with such gorgeous sunrises that overlook a town full of the friendliest people. What he wouldn't give for a rewarp staff, just to ask Him if He thinks what he did was right. soren can't do that, though, so he does what he always does instead.

he finds a place to hide, and tries to sort through the feeling fruitlessly, alone.
