On the subject of thieving ratlings, this year's Boxing Day(?) mini finally answers the question we've all been asking.
No, the commissar does not know about second breakfast.
Nor does he know about the disappearances from the officers' mess.

Billylee Domeknocker, Ratling Venator Bounty Hunter. Billylees' sniper unit was redirected via Necromunda during the 13th Black Crusade, but was separated once the hive world was hit by the great darkness. After aiding in the defence of Hive Primus she was granted dispensation for a Venator licence.

Ratlings! I love these guys... I don't think they are gonna get used in games much though, which kinda sucks because they are some if my favorite models 🤷♀️

Avenel Kozec, imperial guard veteran from an abhuman assault regiment. The Inquisitor requisitioned a squad from his regiment to storm a genestealer fortification, and he was still standing when the job was done. He's often given jobs no one expects him to come back from, but he keeps completing objectives and making it home in one piece. Despite herself, the inquisitor has developed a fondness for the man's abilities.

There is always a funny disconnect between "what outsiders think a meme list looks like" and "what is really deemed the silliest bullshit".
To give one basic example would be "Ohhh what if my Astra Militarum was ALL ARTILLERY???" which makes most players not even raise an eyebrow in how overdone and boring it is both in concept and in terms of gameplay; but when you show up with "Mechanized Ratlings" there is common consensus that it is just whack and people will remember you for causing serious damage with 20-30 sniper-hobbits.
(To explain: Ratlings can move after shooting. It means they can hop right back into the transport they jumped out off. The transport is a Taurox Prime that gives them full hit rerolls, in a detachment that gives all units +1 to wound for shooting in a turn they disembark.)
#wh40k#warhammer 40k#astra militarum#just looked through the new codex on wahapedia and found the silliest combo#pairs well with the stormlord for ultimate meme although you don't use ratlings for that as cargo

Chilchuck is tucked in the back. I think he might be a ratling sniper? It's really just his head and a vague partial gun shape so I can't tell
I think if he’s a tech priest it justifies his interest in traps and devices and his initial feud with Senshi like i’m just imagining him seeing Senshi use a meltagun ammunition canister to power a grill and freaking out about the disrespect to the Machine Spirit

I remember that scene in Cadia Stands where a Ratling sniper jumps out a window to get away from a Night Lord, and the Night Lord jumps out after but FALLS FASTER, gets to the ground first, and catches the poor fucker.

These guys have been sitting in my In Progress Box for weeks while I was struck with art-block. But now I've got 'em done!
Primaris Psyker (the old one, the new one is SUCH a downgrade. Second worst downgrade in the Guard, RIP to the Commissar):

An old metal Catachan meltagunner (very funny that the fact that Catachans can no longer take meltas in 10e means this guy will be doing his duty entirely in non-40k games), my most determined try yet at a model with so much skin showing:

And last but also least! Five of the old Ratling Snipers. I'm not gonna lie to y'all: normally I love the old metal models, but these guys are perhaps the ugliest models I've ever put paint on. I love 'em, surely, but hoo boy, their little faces are frightful:

Though tbh as irritating as their rules are in 10e 40k they probably SHOULD be difficult to look at. I'm looking forward to giving my opponents headaches with these five ugly little Hobbit-ass motherfuckers.

With WarCom down hard, it's a good thing that the big reveals from today's Warhammer Day preview have been cross-posted to other more reliable social media platforms.
Kill Team has been a great vehicle for getting out updates to kits that might not otherwise fit in with the release schedule, or for which the use case is just a little too niche to really drive sales.
Specialist units like tankbustas and ratling snipers aren't so in-demand that they'd really blow the doors off as a standalone release, but they're both in dire need of an update and Kill Team is a great excuse to give them one.
That said, what an update! They both look great, but the ratlings are especially standout for the depth of character. Though they are among the least of the abhumans, their models really pop. Curious to see how they look alongside their Blackstone Fortress counterparts.

I hit a bit of art block recently so I decided to just go back to the old reliable of drawing Necromunda ladies, and since we've seen some recent new releases for Squats and Ratlings what better opportunity to focus on them?

My Angels of Death Kill Team 2024 Team Guide.
This assumes you are bringing the Intercessor Gunner and Assault Intercessor Grenadier
First, leader choices:
Shooty Sergeant: Take him into teams where 5 attacks are not needed in melee. Ratlings sans Ogryn, DoK, etc, and where you expect to be shooting across the map with many of your operatives. He pairs well into Contain, Secure center, occasionally Champion, giving a gunner the rerolls needed for an easy double kill. On Volkus paired with Contain on a good map, the stalker is an option. On ITD or into Blooded or GSC, the auto is better. Otherwise, split the difference with the standard bolter. Power weapon for melee. Any other choice doesn’t need this guide. You know what you’re planning for it.
Assault Sergeant: When you expect you’ll be doing close range shooting or engaged in multiple melees and expect you’ll have multiple operatives who will need some sort of ploy each turning point, bring the assault sergeant. I could see him having play into Novitiates, for example, expecting to need cp for rerolls, ATSKNF, and more. He pairs well into all the tac ops save Contain or Secure Center into teams that out activate or out maneuver you. Bolt pistol has the most value, flamer has niche appeal (especially on itd), and plasma is purely for flavor. Power weapon is still the best overall, particularly with Shock Assault. Chainsword never unless you are forced to; power fist has potential into 7 wound teams but Shock Assault somewhat negates that need.
Captain: Despite what some have said, the captain is not the brain dead play. He has the highest skill ceiling of all the leaders, thanks to his free firefight ploy, 1 per game JaS, and the loss of the free combat doctrine. He is a scalpel, not a hammer. If you start swinging with him willy-nilly, he will get broken fast and you’re left without a tool. However, he can be a surgical strike and take out any champion the opponent has, and has the highest potential to blunt any one alpha strike, only dying to a relentless melta gun 47% of the time if the Iron Halo and CP reroll are available.
These two factors should make his use cases obvious: bring him when there is a dangerous enemy who needs to be destroyed ASAP like another Space Marine Champion and/or the team has access to highly accurate melta shooting like Corsairs or again the Heretic Astartes. He does well into the same TacOps as the assault sarge, and has similar weakness. He excels at Champion.
Gunners
The Heavy Gunner slot has three options: the sniper, the heavy Intercessor, or neither (i. e. bring another warrior). The other warrior option requires a heavy skew, and if you want to do that, again, you don’t need this guide. You’ve got a plan, execute it. Run those chainswords screaming into the enemy. The sniper has a lot that makes it appear attractive, but the heavy bolter maths out better in most instances. Bring the sniper if you are going into teams that have access to obscuring abilities like Nem Claw or Mandrakes and you suspect you’ll need the shots across the board, like into Mandrakes trying to run surveillance, or if you need Seek Light to counter a sniper like into Scouts or on ITD. Additionally, if you expect you’ll need to move 10” across the board for some sort of crit op plan, you can bring the sniper. The sniper has the weakness of needing to stay still to get his best shots off, unlike the Heavy Intercessor. He pairs well into Champion or Contain into hordes on ITD or other light terrain environs The Heavy Intercessor is a workhorse model. His 4” move does limit his uses slightly if he needs to cross from side to side on the long edge or traverse barricades and razor wire, but stick him in the center and he can cover the entire middle zone. He is the second best operative at eating meltas, only dying 2/3 of the times instead of 7/10 of a normal warrior, and has similar odds to survive two power sword fights. He pairs well into Champion, Overrun, Take Ground, and potentially Storm Objectives.
Finally, you have your Warrior choices. Assault warriors should be taken if you want to advance upon the enemy or punish them for approaching you, and do extremely well into the 8-10 wound breakpoints. Even their shooting, at 8”, is respectable. They pair well into the same tac ops as the assault sergeant, although Champion is harder to secure. Teams that out activate and outmaneuver you will cause problems for the assault warriors who have a maximum threat range of 17” for a single pistol shot.
The rifle warriors are extremely efficient into the 7 wound breakpoint, but will struggle to get double kills on anything tougher outside of a shoot-charge-fight, in which case an assault Intercessor could have probably done that as well, and potentially more reliably. The caveat is the stalker bolt rifle, which can reliably break into as much as 10 damage in a single shot, but as with the sniper, it requires you to stay still. So this lends itself to a strategy on Volkus or potentially ITD depending on the corridors, where the stalker warriors, gunner, and sergeant post up on a vantage and have interlocking fields of fire to maintain contain, but it requires you playing into a team that wants to approach you in melee and does not have movement/cover shenanigans. You could draw into a team like Navy Breachers, doing the similar strategy.

My personal list of possible new characters for Darktide:
Skitarii Vanguard
Ratling Sniper
Eldar Ranger (as funny as it is it depends on how much they want the inquisitor to be radical)
Sanctioned Daemonhost (same as above)
Squat
It's wishful thinking but as long as one gets in I'm happy
I think these would all be cool. I'd also add a Sororitas of some sort, personally. Because them ladies are cool.
Now we just need to wait for FS to finish the damned game first. In two years. Then we get to see how much they'll be charging for new careers.
