Who are you?

I'm Kiana, I'm a queer, Japanese Jamaican woman, and a Director/Storyboard artist who works in animation. I'm currently at Disney Television Animation.

What are your pronouns

I usually go by she/her but I don't really mind any pronouns~

Where did you go to school?

California College of the Arts (but I dropped out when I was hired at Disney)

How did you get hired at Disney?

My bosses found me on twitter. They liked my drawing style and asked if I wanted to take a storyboard test. I did, I passed, I got interviewed and moved to LA two weeks later to start storyboarding.

Your work seems familiar. What do I know you from?

I've been on the internet for a long time! It could be a number of things. As maimai97 on dA I had a comic about next gen Pokemon characters called Pokemon 25 Years Later. As kilala97 I had some popular next gen ponies and also had a Steven Universe gemsona named Larimar. I'm also @yamujiburo, known most for drawing Jessie x Delia (hanamusa) a lot. I also work professionally! I've worked as a storyboard artist and director on Disney Channel's Big City Greens, I was a storyboard artist on one of the Steven Universe anti-racism shorts and I was a storyboard artist on Pokemon: Path to the Peak. Most recently I've been on season 6 of Dropout's Game Changer!

What program and brush do you use to draw?

Default brush in Storyboard pro. Photoshop sometimes just for compositing or specific effects.

What is this project?

This is a project that started off as a silly idea that has since grown into me creating a 10 minute pilot animatic.

What does "pilot animatic" entail?

It means that this will effectively be a pilot/episode 1 of a (potential) larger series. It's fully voice acted but will not be fully animated. It's an animatic, meaning it will be comprised of storyboards in video form.

When and where will the pilot be released?

I'm planning on releasing it this month (February)! It will be on my personal youtube channel linked below

What would this series be rated?

Ideally like PG13/TV14! Or whatever they call it. Definitely more geared to a YA audience. Not completely kiddy but also not what most people would consider adult animation to be

What are you planning to do with the project after the pilot is released?

Don't know yet! If it does well I might consider pitching it around, but I'm also content with it just being a pilot and then doing little comics about the characters~

You said Aika had teammates, will we see them?

As I don't know whether I'll be pitching this around, there's some stuff I'm still holding close to my chest. This is one of them.

Do the characters have parents??

Zira does! As for Aika and Eclipse, this is something I'm still developing and don't really know myself haha

Is "Star Guardien: Guardian of the Stars" a reference to that vine?

Nope! It's more so a parody for just really long and redundant titles which I love. Similar to the title of this project, which is called "Pretty Pretty Please I Don't Want to be a Magical Girl"

“You have to see this, Y/N.” Your best friend exclaimed as she joined you in your kitchen where you were making dinner for the both of you.

You glance up from the stove to see her phone in her hand outstretched in your direction. There’s a video playing and from what you can see, it’s a screen recording of an Instagram live. The are two girls in the frame and they look like they’re in a dorm room.

“What is this? Who are they?” You ask confused, turning your attention back to the steak you were frying in a pan.

“They’re basketball players, just watch.” She insists, pushing her phone closer to your face.

You turn your gaze to the video and do as your best friend says. You watch the girls on screen as they read through the comments they were getting. They would laugh every now and then and you found yourself entranced by the blonde and the way her eyes scrunched at the sides when she smiled.

Your best friend turns up the volume of her phone and watches you closely with raised brows.

“OK OK! This is a good question whos your celebrity crush?” The girl with the braids directs to her friend next to her.

The blonde girl ponders for all of three seconds, “This is easy.” She grins and you’re expecting the usual response of one of the many famous men that most girls pine over. Channing Tatum, Michael B Jordan, Harry Styles, Justin Bieber, Vinnie Hacker, Jude Bellingham and you’re not sure why your best friend wanted you to watch this so bad. Until you hear her answer and it’s none of the names you imagined, it’s not even a man. It’s you.

“She’s bad bad.” The blonde continues, “And she sings. What more could you ask for?”

“Damn OK, someones down bad.” Her friend teases, “Y/N, if you’re watching this, let my girl Paige here take you on a date.” You laugh because you imagined the girls never would have thought you’d actually watch this video but, little do they know, your best is chronically online and sees everything that’s posted about you. Of course, she picks and chooses what she shares with you but you’re secretly glad this video made it through her vetting process.

“How old is this girl?” You ask cautiously before making any further comments.

“I’ll Google!” Your best friend chimes, tapping away at her phone. “Twenty two.” She clarifies, the same age as you.

“And she’s still in college?” You ask.

“It says here she was injured for the majority of two seasons so she was eligible to redshirt. She goes to University of Connecticut.” Your best friend explains, probably reading through Wikipedia.

You and your best friend discuss Paige over dinner, scrolling through her various social media accounts. Now you knew her age, you had no problem voicing how you felt about her. “She’s hot.” You say as her most recent TikTok plays on a loop.

Not only was she blonde, which was historically your type, but she had the most beautiful blue eyes that could draw you in, even through a screen. She played basketball, so of course she was tall but the way she carried herself so confidently and purposeful had you in a chokehold. Her muscular body, that she had no problem showing off, had your heart rate spiking each time she flexed her biceps in videos that now flooded your For You Page.

“Well, you know where Connecticut isn’t far from? New York.” Your best friend says, “And where are we? NEW YORK!” She triumphs as if you hadn’t already been able to come to that conclusion yourself.

“I’m messaging her.” You announce, opening Instagram and searching for Paiges name.

“What are you going to say?”

“I don’t know, something flirty.” You reply, fingers hovering over your keyboard as you think.

“Picture of your mommy milkers?” Your best friend says and you laugh at her suggestion, “No! Not yet, anyway.”

You type out a message before deleting it and you finally land on,

heard you wanted to take me on a date?

Paige is quick to reply, you’ve barely put your phone down before it pings.

You cringe at your boldness but the send the message anyway. Paige was hot and she clearly thought you were too so what was the harm in having some fun?

Paige sends you her number and you press call, anxiously waiting for her to answer. When she does, her voice is smoky and sweet and your brows raise at her tone and you excuse yourself to your bedroom, leaving your best friend grinning from ear to ear like a kid in a candy store.

You and Paige chatted for longer than you realise and you find yourself giggling like a teenager at her words. It’s almost midnight when Paiges words become softer and slower, “It’s late. I should let you go.” You say not wanting to keep her up.

“Or you could stay on the phone and sing me to sleep.” She quips, earning another giggle from you.

“Let’s save that for another time. When I’m actually there and you can feel my breath on your neck.” You drawl.

You hear a sharp in take of breath, “Don’t play.” Paige says lowly.

“Goodnight Paige.” You giggle, satisfied with her flustered response.

🛠 Fixed

Posting to Tumblr from IFTTT was being rate limited more than usual lately, causing some actions to fail, but we’ve fixed the issue.

We’re fixing lots of small visual issues with Tumblr Patio, for those who are helping us test it out.

On Android, a small number of users were unable to access their messages on app version 32.9. This issue is now fixed in 33.0.

We’ve rolled out the fix to issue in the iOS app that was preventing folks from editing draft posts.

We attempted to fix the pesky bug that could cause the asks/submissions inbox to show an unread count of 1 or more when nothing was actually in there. This is usually caused by someone sending an ask, and then being suspended for some reason, or blocking, which all prevent the actual ask from being seen. We accidentally made this worse for some people, showing an even higher unread count when nothing was there. While we fixed that botched attempt at a fix, we’re still working to make the situation better overall.

He could only stare at you longingly from afar and wish that he could be closer to you. Yandere! Butler during this time period would discreetly follow you around wherever you went. Bed rest for a few more days is what your doctor told you, and no less, so Seungmin said he would get in with you, or sit and wait while you showered. He refused to leave you in here alone. “Min?” You peek out, and he looks up from his phone. “Do you still wanna come in?”

“Yes, if you want me to…”

The off, not-quite-yourself feeling is still hanging on, and it’s making you self-conscious about your post-partum body…but you’re craving him. You have been for weeks, even though you can’t have him the way you want.

He tenses up as the water hits, and laughs when you grab his sides to pull him close. “How you feeling?”

“Better…tired. I miss them.”

“I do, too. We’ll see them again tomorrow, but you’re getting back into bed after this.”

Seungmin will make sure you follow the doctor’s orders—you’ll fight him, he’ll fight back, but you kiss his chest and try anyway. The tension leaves him as you make your way across his nipple, but your teeth make him jump. “I was hoping to go for a walk. It’s so nice out, and…”

“Isn’t that the opposite of bed rest?” He laughs and rubs shampoo between his hands until it lathers up

The gentle touch of his fingers moving through your hair makes you forget everything. You don’t have to do anything…no, you can just stay right here with him, and hands that know exactly what to do. “Aah yeah, a little contrary.”

“A little…contrary?” Seungmin mimics your accent when he says it back, but it doesn’t come out quite right.

“You pickin on me?”

“Mmh, salanghagi ttaemoone.”

He stares softly as you think, far more confident in your abilities than you are. “Salaaang…hagii…ttaee.” But you know this one. “I love you, too.”

“I know.”

“You love me so much you’ll take me to that brunch place in Jongno…”

There’s a hint of fake confusion in his voice, “brunch place?” And he cocks his head to the side as he thinks.

“Yes, you know the one. I want waffles. Bananas, chocolate chips, lots of butter, real maple syrup.”

Seungmin dips your head back into the stream of water, and watches the suds run down your body. He’ll try to convince you to order whatever it is you’re craving, but he can’t blame you for wanting to stretch your legs. The last few weeks have been spent in bed, and you didn’t even make it beyond the second trimester. He was hoping things would become easier and more comfortable eventually, but he assumes, hopes, that’s how you’re feeling now. “I’ll think about it after we get dressed.”

“Hyeondae Wonseo Park is only half a mile away, that’s perfect. And we can walk around the park a little, right?”

The soap he's rubbing between his palms get all of his attention, but you know he heard you, and you know he’s thinking about it. A few moments later, he shakes the damp hair from his forehead and sighs.

“Minnie, jebaaal. I need some sun, and fresh air.”

“After we get food, we’ll see how you feel on the way back. We can walk around the park if you’re not too tired.”

“Is it good?”

“It is.” He pokes his last piece of waffle, and then a strawberry, and pops it in his mouth. “I hope yours was as good as you imagined. Did it hit the spot?”

“Yeah, thank you for bringing me.”

“That coffee is gonna keep you up.”

You shake your head and finish off your cup. “No. Nap is guaranteed.”

Seungmin smiles and narrows his eyes. “So you are tired. Why don’t you wait here, have another coffee, and I’ll go get the car.”

“Not so tired…more sore. My back hurts.” You don’t mind admitting defeat to him. The back pain has been mostly constant since labor started, so climbing into bed with a heating pad can’t come soon enough. “But I still enjoyed our walk.”

“I did, too.” He kisses your head on the way out, and you watch him until he disappears around the corner.

It’s strange being alone, even though you know he’s not far, and even though you just spent the better part of three days without him. Luckily the cafe is quiet, and the server comes back quickly when he notices you looking at him. “Uhm...latte…han jan deo…juseyo?” He nods and smiles sweetly despite your awful pronunciation.

…but sitting in a cafe in the city, a pathetic amount of Korean in your head—you’re pushed back in time—October, November without him. And then he was there, and after your dizzying back and forth, it was like he was always supposed to be with you. You sip your new coffee carefully and try your best to look like you belong, but when you finally take another look around the cafe, you notice a pair of eyes on you. He’s been here the whole time, by the looks of his table, but you didn’t notice him until just this moment.

Then he clears his throat, and your heart starts to race. This happened on occasion when you would attempt to venture out on your own, and it was never too much for you to handle, but you’re not feeling yourself right now, and you’re tired and in pain. Maybe leaving home was a bad idea.

He clicks his tongue and turns his body. “How dare he get up and leave you here.”

He speaks so quickly, you don’t think you catch a single word. All you can manage is a shake of your head before trying to hide behind another sip.

“And with the bill. He left you with the bill?”

It won’t take him long to cover that half mile. You pull your phone from your pocket and wait for a text telling you he’s on his way, but that won’t come for another few minutes, at least.

“No Korean? I should have guessed by that face…”

Very cautiously, you look up at him. He’s standing now, tall and broad. He looks at least a decade older than you. Maybe more.

“I said…how dare he just leave you here. And with the bill.” He repeats in English.

“He didn’t.” Speaking to him might be a mistake, but it slips out as soon as he accuses Seungmin of being inconsiderate. “He—''

“Oh he’s coming back yes? Do you really think so?”

The man pulls at the chair across from you, lifts it away from Seungmin’s empty plate, and the feet hit the floor with a crash. He sits in the chair with the same unnecessary force, a strange attempt at authority, you think, and the way he spreads his legs and rests his palms on his knees reminds you of your father…and you find yourself staring hard at him—at his hands and his shoulders. Anywhere but his face. You rip your eyes away and look at your empty phone screen again.

He leans forward a little and whispers, “I don't believe you.”

The slow, careful way he speaks that time is easier to understand. “You don’t have to.”

“She does understand!” He claps his hand together and the sound makes you jump. “But maybe you speak very little. I can take care of this for you, of course…if you need. And if you need anything else.”

“I don’t need…anything.”

“A young girl shouldn’t be wondering around the city all alone. I take care of this bill, and you and I go somewhere else.”

“No thank you.” The rings on your finger won’t deter this man, either, but you wrap your hands around your coffee cup again anyway. His smirk grows when he seems to notice it.

“Nampyeon?”

The word sounds gross coming from his mouth, but Seungmin being referred to as yours, your nampyeon, still makes your mouth twitch into a smile. He doesn’t seem to notice, though. You check your phone again, and now, five minutes later, he may just be getting back to the car. "Yes, my husband." You want to send something, but you also don’t want to make him rush back worrying, or worse, give him extra time to get angry.

“I don’t believe you.”

But maybe you’d prefer if Seungmin came back pissed off. You glance down and type quickly…”hurry back” and watch for the read notification.

You okay? I just got to the car

The man leans forward again and swipes your phone, and you stare in disbelief at his boldness. He actually takes your phone from you, and you look around to see that your server is still nowhere to be found. Anyone who has walked in recently certainly isn’t paying attention. “What do you think you’ll achieve by acting this way?”

“Seongchwihada?” He says, apparently dumbfounded by the question, but his attention is on your phone as he scrolls up the messages the two of you have shared. And then he begins to type something. “Don’t worry, I told him…Minnie…that you’re well.”

The phone drops on the table and you check the messages as soon as you can grab it. Seungmin’s reply is still the last text on there, and you quickly type before he can distract you or grab it again. “I’ll come out and…” You stop and backspace. The bill still needs paid, and Seungmin has the money. There’s no choice but to wait here. “yes and no, there’s a guy in here that won’t leave me alone.”

The read receipt popping up makes you nervous—for him, because you don’t want him to overreact. You remember the incident in the pastry shop in Daegu, and how your fainting might have been the only reason he didn’t act on his anger and possibly get himself in serious trouble. And you’re a little nervous for the idiot in front of you.

Read, but no reply. You can’t stay here. You can’t let him walk in angry. Why did you text him that? Seungmin might do something stupid if he isn’t actively going over this in his head as he drives. You stand and head for the door anyway, but the man moves as well. The sound of the chair scraping, and then two, three steps toward you sends a shiver up your back. He has to be close. He’ll appear around that corner any minute, but the seconds are dragging and you’re starting to feel your breakfast coming back up.

A cold, sweaty hand lands on your forearm. “Naleul manjiji maseyo!”

“Angry! Sounds good on you.”

But you pull away, and Seungmin is there when you turn. Red in the face, jaw clenched tight. You can see the veins popping in his neck as he brushes by you, but he makes sure to find your hand and squeeze.

“I’m okay, Min. It’s fine.”

“Gwenchanaaa.” The man mocks you and grins at Seungmin. “This is it? This piece of string is your husband?”

The tension in his body disappears, and his hand runs reassuringly up your forearm. Still, he stares hard at the man who is still standing far too close.

Everything starts to happen very quickly.

His hand slides away from you and onto the man, clutching the collar of his shirt. He’s pulled down, and the look on his face screams disbelief, but it’s cut short by Seungmin’s forehead meeting his nose. The sound it makes, the loud snap of bone and cartilage, makes everyone look your way. He hits the floor and blood pours through his fingers as he desperately tries to stop it and back away. Nobody moves, but you hear the low, worried conversation coming from the other end of the cafe.

“Minnie…maybe we should go.”

“We will, love, just a minute.”

The server looks at his phone. What if he calls the police? Or worse, records everything. Seungmin is too smart to get caught doing something like this, so why is he on him again, straddling him, hand clenched and pulled back? Regardless of your worry, you watch and admire every part of his body as he moves—the arch of his back, the span of his shoulders as he straightens, his fist swinging. He makes contact with the man’s mouth, and the release you feel makes your legs shake. He does it again, and again, and again, then switches to his left hand and evens him out.

That seems to be enough for him, at least for now. He stretches his busted knuckles and stumbles over to you. “Let’s go…oh,” he dips down and comes back up with a worn black wallet—not his, but he pulls out the cash inside and sets it on your table. “Je sagwaleul badajuseyo.” More money is pulled from the wallet, a 50,000 won bill, and placed on the table. A tip, you assume, for making a mess. “It’s starting to rain, let’s get home before it gets worse.”

Tending to his bloody hands is more work than you expect, because now is when Seungmin decides to whine. He winces and sucks his teeth as you dab at the broken skin, but you can’t blame him—the man’s nose crumbled easily, but nothing else did. Everything is beginning to bruise already, and you suspect he’ll feel it up to his shoulders by tomorrow morning, and you also suspect he’s very pleased with himself. When he’s not scrunching up his nose in pain, he looks at you like a puppy waiting for his treat. You’re not sure what he wants, but you gently kiss each hand before icing them. “Keep still for a few minutes.”

He looks up at you as you stand, eyes still big and wet. “Thank you.”

“I’m looking forward to the end result.” You lean back down and give him the kiss he’s looking for. First on his forehead. There's a bright red mark where he successfully broke the man's nose. And then on his lips.

“Hm?"

“He put his hands on me.”

“He did, unfortunatly for him.” Seungmin nods to the black wallet sitting open next to his keys. “I have his address, his business card. Just need to case.”

That gets him another kiss. Obviously he’s not going to strangle someone in a cafe in broad daylight, even though the thought gets a twinge of pleasure out of you. The assault was risky enough.

“Careful,” Seungmin whispers against your lips when your hands slide down his chest, slowly moving closer to the waistband of his jeans.

“No.”

“Fuck,” he whines. “My hands don’t work.” The shift of his legs makes his growing erection much more obvious.

“I might be sleepy, but mine still work.”
