"한 여성이 노래하려고 자전거에서 내렸다"

유튜브에 길거리에서 노래하는 영상이 널려있긴 한데, 최근 이거에 꽂힘.

한 아주머니가 브롬톤 자전거에 짐을 주렁주렁 잔뜩 달고 오시더니만 (내가 무척 좋아하는) 밥 말리의 '헛된 기다림(=Waiting in Vain)'을 부르는데, 그루브가 넘 맘에 들어 반복 시청.

제목, 가사 모두 "네 사랑을 기다리며 헛되이 시간을 버리지 않겠다"는 의미긴 하지만 그가 "아프리카 회귀"를 주장하는 라스타파리즘(Rastafarism) 동조자였고, 1977년 발매한 음반 '엑소더스(Exodus)' 수록곡이었단 점에서 새 시대가 오기를 넋 놓고 기다리지만은 않고 행동에 나서겠다는 의미로 볼 여지도 있지 않을까라고 개인적으론 추측했었는데, 아무래도 헛발질한 듯.

대체로 받아들여지는 이 노래의 '진짜' 의미는 밥 말리 혼외 연인이었던 신디 브레이크스피어(Cindy Breakspeare)와 겪었던 일을 노래로 만들었단 주장이다. 이분은 캐나다-자메이카 혼혈의 재즈 가수이자 1976년 미스 월드로 선정된 미녀였고, 밥 말리 사이에서 데미안 말리란 자식을 낳았다.

이어진 "나 별로인 거 너도 알잖아(=You Know I'm No Good)"도 좋았고… 에이미 와인하우스 세상 떠난 지도 어느새 12년이네.

노래하고 있는 장소가 궁금해 영상에 나오는 건물을 토대로 구글 지도 검색하니 뉴욕 그리니치빌리지 6번가로 나온다.

Rastafarism ラスタファリズムと言えばその発祥地であるジャマイカを思い浮かべる人も多いだろうけど、実は日本はラスタファリ大国である。日本はラスタの男性や女性もヨーロッパやアジアの他国と比較して桁違いに多いし、ラスタファリズムと密接な関係にあるレゲェも、希少価値のあるレコードやコレクター物については、ジャマイカ国内での売り上げを日本が凌ぐとまで言われている。もちろん、レゲエにも多くのサブジャンルがあるし、発売されるレコードの数も多いので、一概には言えないが、このような日本のラスタファリ文化への偏愛傾向は70年代にはじまり、80年代、90年代にピークを迎え、ファッションとしてだけではなく、宗教や哲学としてラスタファリズムも今はすっかり日本に定着している。桜に囲まれた日本の美しい山岳で家族と暮らすラスタマンやラスタウーマンもいるし、沖縄やカリブ海周辺、そしてアメリカの都市部で暮らす日本人ラスタも僕は数多く知っている。これはおそらく基本的にはラスタファリズムにおけるアニミズムや汎神論的傾向、天皇制とエチオピア皇帝崇拝の類似点、そして、ヨーロッパやアメリカの植民地主義や奴隷制度への反発が大きいと思う。あまり知られていないが、多くの日本人ラスタやジャマイカ独自の文化を愛する者たちは、政府の外交とは無関係に、80年代頃からジャマイカと日本を往復し、地元のラスタマン、ラスタウーマンたちと交流しては家族のような信頼関係を築いているものも多い。僕は日本的なラスタファリズムも世界に誇りうる文化だと考えているし、水面下で繰り広げられる日本人とジャマイカ人の市民レベルの外交は本当に素晴らしいことだと思う。
