RUSS FT. TAZE, LD, DIGGA D, MS BANKS & LETHAL BIZZLE - GUN LEAN (REMIX)
[5.71]
Left, right, left, right.
Joshua Minsoo Kim: Did we really get two high profile rap songs with ching chong jokes in the span of a couple weeks? The original version of "Gun Lean" didn't contain that line, but I can't be too upset with this remix; it's too amusing to hear a UK drill song teaching you its namesake's dance. After all the controversy and clamor that drill music has caused, the chart success of a song like this -- one "for everyone, boys and girls" -- is a cheeky spit in the face to all the naysayers. Some of the features do well (LD, Digga D), others don't (Lethal Bizzle), but this is ultimately about how Gotcha Bxtch's skeletal beat acts as a sinister backdrop to some simple shoulder leans. If this could replace every instance of "Cha Cha Slide" and "Cupid Shuffle" at the weddings I attend this year, that'd be great. [5]
Thomas Inskeep: Goddamn if UK drill isn't some of the most exciting music being made right now, akin to grime a decade ago, come to think. The "Gun Lean" remix brings the two together (not that that they're that far apart) by pulling in grime legend Lethal Bizzle for its last verse -- but don't allow that to take your focus away from Russ, or from any of his other guests here. Everyone here's got skills, and they all fit together nicely; this doesn't sound like a single with a bunch of features, it sounds like a crew track. The original of "Gun Lean" is great, and this remix actually improves upon it. [8]
Iain Mew: At the same time as the vilification of UK drill reaches a new height with artists Skengdo & AM getting a prison sentence for performing their song, the genre has its biggest commercial breakthrough to date. It's unsurprising that it's a friendlier face of it, but "Gun Lean" sounding like a catatonic version of guest Lethal Bizzle's "RariWorkOut" goes a bit far. The remix taking out the casual homophobia of Russ's solo version only to put in a Jet Li reference there for racism purposes is also the definition of a mixed blessing. [3]
Iris Xie: I have a weakness for a very low and booming bassline, it's just really soothing and grounding. Above the booms floats 5 raps that cut in diagonal textures, sandwiched by a chorus that breathes with pace. This creates different auditory patterns for each rapper, some with razor thin lines and sinewy curls, and others with jagged cuts and clipped corners. One could create sculptures from how they play with spatiality here. [8]
Alfred Soto: The looped beat forces the five credited rappers into orbits like planets around a cooling sun. Some words are cleverer than others, with the "ching/chong" bit the kind of elementary school-aged smut that never fails to clang but often, regrettably, works in rap. [6]
Julian Axelrod: The beat is barely there: just a bass squelch, a sprinkling of drums, and the ghost of a seesaw synth. It should be the ideal setting for a grime posse cut. (When you've got five rappers on a track, the last thing you need is a cluttered canvas.) But while Russ & Friends throw out bar after bar, nothing seems to stick. Once the song fades out, I don't remember a single line -- just that whisper of a beat snaking into the sky. [5]
Jonathan Bradley: It's apparently terrifying -- music that demands police action -- but, in its trip across the Atlantic, drill seems to have lost some of the volatility that made Chicago such a transfixing rap center earlier this decade. "Gun Lean" has gloom, and a bass that has absorbed that mass of ill-feeling, but the MCs in this remix are cramped and crabby. I went back to "L's Anthem" and "I Don't Like" to be sure, but it's true: this music was once more than headlines and moral panic. [5]

Unexpected body lesson from the start of a 12 week fitness plan... But have I learned a damn thing?
After realising a personal trainer was an unnecessary extravagance I have set myself a 12 week chall脿nge as of 2 days ago. I want to improve my level of fitness and change my body shape.
I鈥檝e decided to up my 3 days a week cardio/insanity/yoga to 4 or 5 minimum along with other less intense exercise. I鈥檝e also started eating 6 smaller meals a day after looking into nutrition, and vegan nutrition in particular.
After listening to the Henry Rollins podcast and the Mr Pepperman story I鈥檝e decided to not look in the mirror at my entire body until the challenge is over. I鈥檝e allowed myself face time in the mirror to brush my teeth and apply make up but that鈥檚 it. I decided to do the mirror thing thinking it would be an amazing revelation at the transformation but something else has happened.
Automatic thoughts are thoughts that flash through your mind without you realising they鈥檝e even occurred. They can be OK, but sometimes detrimental. The more you become aware of the negative ones the more you can do something about them. I thought I was ok and they didn鈥檛 really happen to me, but I鈥檝e learned something in these 3 days. From walking past mirrors and catching myself going to look in the bathroom mirror I鈥檝e become aware of some of the destructive automatic thoughts I was having, at least 8 times a day (minimum!), about my podgy stomach and I鈥檝e realised, even though I wasn鈥檛 aware of them, the few nano seconds they lasted they were making me feel really bad about myself as well as the amazing work I鈥檝e already been doing. Without realising been telling myself I just wasn鈥檛 quite good enough throughout the day! Without realising I was undermining my achievements and not allowing myself to feel good. Without realising I was sabotaging myself! I thought I was doing so well!
I鈥檓 glad I have become aware of this and I feel like now I can be in charge and do things differently. I鈥檓 making the choice to feel good about myself and replacing the mirror time with feeling good about myself.
I think I鈥檓 on a good path to banish the self-negativity. But it鈥檚 got me thinking now.
How can I balance self acceptance and working towards my goal. How can I accept my belly podge and feel good about myself when I want to get rid of it? I鈥檓 going to concentrate on feeling good right now. All that鈥檚 real is this moment; and in this moment, my podge is here and it鈥檚 welcome but it's going... Oh god I'm in a twilight zone of contradicting myself

LETHAL BIZZLE FT. JME & TEMPA T - RARIWORKOUT [7.08] SWEATIN' TO THE GRIMIES...
Brad Shoup: /puts on wedding playlist /guests die [9]
Crystal Leww: I WANT TO TAKE OFF AND GO FOR A RUN I AM SO HYPED UP BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE PUMP PUMP PUMP RUN RUN RUN RUN AUGHHHHHHH PUMP PUMP PUMP PUMP PUMP PUMP PUMP PUMP PUMP [7]
Kat Stevens: I've spent all summer beefing up my upper arms, lats and trapezoids and it's been immensely satisfying. I can pick up a basket of wet laundry like it was a mere basket of dry laundry! I'm pleased to find that the Boy Better Know crew have a) achieved similar levels of Hench b) written a suitably energetic song about it. All that's missing is a Man 2 Man sample! I'm not entirely sure when my Ferrari is due to arrive but another couple of chin-ups should do it? [9]
Maxwell Cavaseno: IT'S. DA. BIZZLE! The More Fire Camp maestro hasn't had a song that measures up to the immediacy of the 2004 East London Royal Rumble "Pow!" for over a decade. But RariWorkOut is an unmistakable BANGEUR, the likes in grime haven't produced in years! JME's nerdy precociousness is actually perfectly incisive, Lethal's bombastic plugged-in-a-socket flow returning with surprising comfort. And Tempz! TEMMMMPZ! Tempa T hasn't sounded this alive since the power and the glory that was his sudden ascension to the top tier of MCs in 09-10! I'm amazed because if you told me years ago that in 2014, the likes of Skepta, Wiley, Ghetto, Kano and Dizzee would be unable to make a good single, while Lethal The Bizzle was running laps around them, I'd have laughed outright, but here we are! Also, much like "Pow!" stole its trademark hook from Pay As U Go Cartel's God's Gift, Lethal's definitely jacked his "PUMP PUMP PUMP"! bellow from another MC, and I just can't recall. As such, Lethal's inability to stop jacking from his peers prevents me from giving this song the [10] it so rightly deserves. [9]
Katherine St Asaph: I can't wait until we're all brains in jars. No one will have to work out, or be shouted at to. [3]
Alfred Soto: It's inevitable that a little over ten years after grime's peak one of its touchstones would release this comeback. The momentum drills a hole into the wall, and Tempa keeps up. [6]
Patrick St. Michel: Been a while since I've so badly wanted an instrumental/hook-only version of a song as for this. Have you ever waded into a bodybuilding forum, or know someone who has? I have and do, and the line between general concern and egotistical preacher is very thin. I was hoping this would turn into a metaphor for anything else, but nope. But the energy is so damn good, it makes the gym obsession tolerable. [6]
Iain Mew: You'd think there's only so highly I can rate a record whose best moment is a simple flip of another record, but I love "German Whip" that much. Besides, this actually makes exercise sound fun! It's all in the balance of actual motivation, tongue in cheek humour and an energetic beat that never quite settles. It's like having an instructor you like enough to be happy when they call you out for relaxing. Stop that! PUMP PUMP PUMP! [8]
Scott Mildenhall: Lethal Bizzle holds an interesting place in the newly codified game of banter. Over the last few years (and over the internet) he's become a bit of a lad icon, and "RariWorkOut" exemplifies that: big bants and bigger biceps. Like "German Whip", it's Soccer AM pop, in a niche world of Frimpong, Akinfenwa and Heskey that is in no way a guarantee of quality. On this occasion it's hard to resist -- "PUMP PUMP PUMP", "RARIWORKOUT" and a near parodic overuse of "dench" amid little relent. However he does it, he's one of very few people to get rap in the chart, and without a traditional promotional set-up. [7]
Jonathan Bradley: I only ever exercise when a rapper instructs me on how, and while I found the Kanye West Get Right For The Summer Work Out Tape to be worth every cent of the $free.99 I paid for it, I've felt I'm long overdue for a new routine. So thank you very much to Mr. Bizzle for this plan, complete with a pointy little synth loop, a charged-up bounce, and, most important, a really shoutable hook: RARI WORK OUT. RARI WORK OUT. Extra thanks to JME for for his comprehensive list of reasons to engage in a fitness regime: Vine, Instagram, your health, your fam. (Apparently some of those are more respectable than others?) [8]
Thomas Inskeep: Like most of the British rappers I like, Bizzle rose out of the grime scene, and to its credit this is barely more polished than some of his grime classics (like "Pow" and More Fire Crew's "Oi!") (as opposed to the overproduced road Dizzee Rascal seems to have gone down of late). That said, this will totally go into my gym playlist. [7]
Megan Harrington: Shhh. Be very quiet. I'm hunting meatheads. [6]
