Wot U Call It?
East London
While all these (mostly) white boys were forming bands in London, there was another sub-culture in the capital’s underground that was just as exciting…
Grime is not hip hop and not all UK rap is grime.
Garage (not garage rock) was a dominant scene of London’s underground and it influenced 2 very different sounds and cultures. One being grime, which first exploded in 2003, then again in the 2010’s but there was also Original Pirate Material by The Streets, an album that stands out like no other, nobody has been able to replicate what Mike Skinner delivered on the debut album, a “cult classic, not bestseller” (charting at no.10).
youtube
Then the is Boy In Da Corner…
The debut album from Bow rapper Dizzee Rascal was a catalyst for the breakthrough of the first-generation grime, a defining moment for black Britain. Released on XL Records, it might have only peaked at no.23 in the UK album chart but its legacy is huge as it brought grime, a niche and very specific sound to the mainstream for the first time. It gave black youths a voice and an aspiration, they could see Dizzee’s success and aim for it. Boy In Da Corner was loved by many, an album that was celebrated outside of its genre just as much as it was within, and won the 2003 Mercury Prize.
youtube
First Generation Grime
Hip hop has been the biggest growing genre in the world for the majority of the century, it has become the new pop and pop flirts with hip-hop. It has given black people a voice, and for the first time they aren’t censored by the white middle-aged men running the music business as the internet has given them the tools to do it themselves.
There’s a host of sub-genres in hip-hop and for the last 20 years, grime has dominated it in the UK (drill has become a close second), even if it has lost its truest meaning and personality in recent years. Grime in the 2000’s was very different to the second wave of grime in the 2010’s, it was 21st-century punk.
A popular misconception of grime is that it’s hip hop with an English accent as it is people rapping over a beat, however the sound was born from a quick, aggressive beat (140 beats per minute). A New York rapper would struggle to keep up. It is culturally specific.
The genre emerged from the garage scene in London on pirate radio and in clubs. There was MC’s at garage nights but they would act like hosts whereas these MC’s wanted to express themselves over a beat while people would continue to dance. Grime rappers live for energy when performing and to get crowds revved up DJs often restart a song, known as reloads and wheel-ups. The live element for the genre is big business, even though the police effectively shut it down towards the end of the 2000’s. A decade later, Wireless is pretty much a grime festival, Stormzy has headlined Glastonbury while Dave is an arena artist. Both of these artists, from the second generation have become global megastars which would have been unthinkable in the 2000’s.
It’s a trend comparable with the first generation of the New Rock Revolution who had to break the door open for the next wave of artists to walk in and dominate. Wiley and Dizzee being The Strokes and The Stripes, Stormzy and Dave being The Killers and Kings Of Leon. However, grime artists have had greater challenges because of the neighbourhoods they grew up in and the colour of their skin.
youtube
So Solid Crew and The Streets took garage rap to the mainstream but a scene, particularly in Bow, East London was starting in the late ‘90’s and it was fronted by Godfather of Grime, Wiley. The mainstream garage acts were rapping about the usual stuff pop artists speak of, Wiley bridged that gap and he spoke to his audience about street life which was unheard of in the UK.
In March 2002 Pulse X by Musical Mob is credited as the first grime beat. Later that month Lethal Bizzle’s More Fire Crew released Oi! which charted at no.8, the first grime song to get attention outside of London.
youtube
4 months later Wiley released Eskimo Riddim, an instrumental beat that would define the genre. Wiley called the sound EskiBeat, however pirate radio presenters described it as ‘grimey’ because of its dirty, aggressive tone and ‘grime’ stuck.
Lethal Bizzle’s controversial banger, Pow! (Forward) which had been banned from being played in clubs because its aggressive beat was believed to incite violence. It also received no radio play because of the lyrical content but it still charted at no.11 in October. The same year, the whole scene was given exposure when Jammer launched Lord Of The Mics, a compilation series celebrating the best of grime.
youtube
In June 2005 Roll Deep released debut album Into The Deep End while grime’s other supergroup, Boy Better Know (BBK) formed. The collective featured brothers Skepta and JME as well as Frisco, Jammer, DJ Maximum, Preditah, Shorty, Solo 45 and Wiley. Skepta and JME’s sister, Julie Adenuga has also been an influential figure as a DJ on Rinse FM and later on Beats 1.
Grime became a soundtrack to the streets, giving a platform to those underrepresented in the mainstream while uniting diversity and it began on pirate radio, emerging in different postcodes in London before spreading throughout the UK. The sound is influenced by the homes grime artists grew up in. These teens were mostly first or second-generation Brits, their parents being part of the Windrush Generation, they were surrounded by their Afro roots from a young age. At the same time, US hip hop had started to break through on a commercial level in the UK, exposing them to rappers like Jay Z and Snoop Dogg.
Without pirate radio stations, there would be no grime. It was the only way to get music out there. Unless you were in an underground London club you’d have to listen in to pirate radio to hear this new wave which wasn’t easy. Up until 2004, for most grime fans, their only option was to tune in to pirate radio. If you missed it, you missed out.
These stations were illegal and hyper-local. If you weren’t within a mile or so of the station it would be hard to pick up. As they were illegal, listeners would feel like they were insiders, part of ‘their’ movement while the broadcasters risked their lives (climbing on buildings to erect aerials) or their freedom to make it happen. They really cared about what they were doing. People would tape the shows and pass them around to others who weren’t in the postcode.
Rinse FM launched as a pirate radio station in 1994 as a garage station but it’s where the origins of grime began. On Sunday’s Wiley’s Roll Deep had their own show on Rinse while Kano’s N.A.S.T.Y. Crew were on Deja Vu FM and Skepta DJ’d on his own show on Heat 96.6 FM where the transition of grime could be heard as he played a mix of his own instrumentals, UK garage, US hip hop, early grime alongside jungle and reggae.
These artists only had their weekly moment to stand out which created a unique energy. As the radio wasn’t visual, rappers had to be different to be heard, when they were part of a crew with a dozen or so members, they needed to be larger than life, have their own characteristics, phrases and flows. Everybody knew who D Double E was because of his personality.
In 2005 DJ Slimzee, who co-founded Rinse FM was given an ASBO (Anti Social Behaviour Order) when broadcast equipment was discovered during a house raid. A year later, running a radio station without a licence to broadcast became a criminal offense which could lead to 2 years in prison and fines. This was the beginning of the end for pirate radio which coincided with the internet becoming the new Wild West.
This made pirate radio stations irrelevant which was one of the contributing factors to grime fading out in the late 2000’s. The stations played such an integral part in the culture early that, even though they weren’t needed, it just wasn’t the same. By 2010 Rinse had become an established and legal station which had its pros and cons. It continued with its DIY ethos, breeding new talent, not only in terms of music but also in broadcasters and taste makers without the risk of life or prison but the Community FM Broadcast License which they were rewarded came with consequences as they were regulated by Ofcom. This meant that they had to be censored, grime was never intended for this, the rappers didn’t want to be censored and they couldn’t afford extra studio time to record radio-friendly versions.
This wasn’t just Rinse who had to dial down from the rough and ready pirate radio days and it created an on-going battle for underground artists who wanted radio play but didn’t want to make music that would cater for the mainstream.
Music is a creative outlet but it's also a business and a way for artists to pay their bills. The negative connotations of grime led to discrimination by police in London with the introduction of Form 696, a risk assessment that promoters had to complete 14 days ahead of an event taking place in London. At one point there were questions included that clearly targeted grime events, based on ethnicity and how music was performed. This led to many grime events being cancelled, at the point where the genre was at its first peak, artists were affected financially as well as missing out on other opportunities. They were either forced into different styles of music, (Dizzee had already broken into mainstream pop, Wiley had a couple of huge bangers and Skepta tried to follow) or back to the streets which is another reason why the genre went quiet towards the late 2000’s and early 2010’s.
youtube
The third, and arguably the most disrespectful reason for grime losing its spotlight was because of the ‘business’. Grime wasn’t created for the masses, it was a sub-genre that spoke to a specific audience, for it to become mainstream it would need to be watered down, which would be inauthentic and nobody wants that.
As soon as Boy In Da Corner (released on an independent label) was winning awards major labels jumped on the scene to piggyback on its success however, it wasn’t exactly a mainstream phenomenon. Labels saw potential in other artists which they heavily invested in (this was peak music piracy era and grime artists didn’t release music in a traditional format) which they didn’t see a return on. Suddenly, this new wave of ‘next big things’ were being cast as failures and tied up in contracts, leaving them stranded, effectively killing the first generation of grime.

As he enters the apartment, Roman can hear the faint beat of music coming from beyond the lounge. He shifts his suitcase into its usual space by the door and slides his backpack to the floor.
"Kat?" he calls out. But there's no reply from wherever she is.
Heading towards the kitchen, he opens the refrigerator and then closes it when he says the open bottle of red wine and an empty glass on the kitchen counter. He takes the invitation and pours himself a glass before taking it, and the bottle, in search of Katherine. He follows the sound of the music, passing the room she uses as an office. The door is open - her laptop glows softly in the dimness. He can see an open document on the screen and the remains of a late snack on the desk.
He continues towards the music and nudges open the half-closed door to Katherine's bedroom. It's empty, but there's a path of discarded clothes that must have been hastily removed leading him to the bathroom and from within, he can now make out the music - and her voice.
Weak as I am Am I too much for you?
He crosses the room as quietly as he can, but there isn't any need as she's too wrapped up in the song to notice anything else. He pauses at the bathroom door and slowly eases it open.
The smell of oranges hits him, a scent he's all too familiar with from pressing his face against her neck, breasts, stomach, thighs. Fuck, he's missed her. Leaning against the doorframe, he breathes in both the smell and sight of her at last.
The bath is luxuriously deep and he can see her sunken in its depths, only the top of her head and hands visible. It takes all his strength not to join her - not yet anyway. So instead, he watches her hand twist in the air to the beat of the music whilst the other cradles a half-drunk glass of wine.
The song fades into another and he chuckles to himself - her playlist choices are certainly eclectic. As he discovered a few months ago when she picked him up from the airport one evening, her playlist can flow from 90s rock to hip-hop to ballads to pop in the blink of an eye and it seems her bath time soundtrack is no different. He shakes his head in amusement as Katherine shifts in the bath, her head nodding along with the beat as her voice picks up the lyrics.
He takes a swig of wine, enjoying watching her uninhibited. He rarely gets an opportunity to see her unaware of his presence. Usually, when he arrives back, she's opening the door before he's even up the stairs and they are wrapped up in each other for the rest of the night and the few days they have together. He half-wonders why tonight is different, but at the same time, he's happy to watch and observe for a few moments longer.
Katherine raises her glass, swirling the contents for a moment before she decides to drain the remains. Her head rolls back against the edge of the bath for a second as she nods along to the beat, biting her lip, before she smirks to herself, the lyrics to the song spilling from her mouth with ease.
Tryna stand her ground, make her knees cave in  That ring says she must be married  When I was banging her to Drake, she said "trust mi daddy"
A hand slips over hers and she shrieks. "FUCK!"
The bath water threatens to cascade onto the floor as her eyes flash open and she sees Roman looming over her.
He chuckles, unabashed. "Sorry, sorry." He slips the glass from her grip with ease and refills it for her.
Katherine takes a shaky breath, her heart still doing double-time from the shock. She leans over the bath and finds her phone to hit pause on the playlist. Straightening, she accepts the now full glass of wine back from him. "How long have you been stood there?"
"A few minutes," he grins. "You were in your own little world and I didn't want to interrupt."
He settles against the vanity, placing the bottle next to him and taking a sip from his glass. She takes a longer drink, her eyes not moving from him as she takes in his trademark dark sweats, the beanie, the hood pulled up over his head - his usual travel get-up. Whilst she fully appreciates how damn fine he looks when suited and booted, there is just something even more delicious about him in casual gear.
Tumblr media
She catches his eyes drift from her face briefly and they darken as they flicker over her body only half-shielded by the bubbles in the bath.
"You wanna join me?" she asks, bending her legs to show there’s room for him. "It's still warm…"
She barely gets the words out before he reaches for the back of his hoodie and tugs it up and over his head. The beanie comes with it, exposing the thick knot of hair at the base of his neck. She laughs as within quick succession, his sneakers are kicked off and his pants are pushed to the floor.
Katherine drops her head to one side, taking in his height and breadth - a sight that she hasn't seen in person for almost a month. She bites her lip as her eyes drift down his body and she catches a glimpse of something else she's also missed. The video calls and photos she's received from him, really do not do him any justice, she thinks with a smirk.
As he steps into the bath, she scoots back to make room for him but it's a pointless move as the second he's sat opposite her, he's reaching for her. Pulling her upright, he brushes a loose tendril of hair from her cheek and then cups the back of her neck as he pulls her closer for a kiss. She sighs against his lips, her hand sliding over his shoulder.
"Fuck, I've missed you," Roman hears himself murmur as he pulls back at last.
"I missed you too," she replies, her fingers brushing over his beard.
As she shifts back into her previous spot, Roman's hand slips under the water. He finds a foot and tugs it up onto his chest, his large hand holding it firm as his thumb presses into the sole in slow, deep circles. He watches Katherine's eyes close for a second, her head dropping back against the edge of the bath.
"I didn't mean to still be in the bath," she murmurs, her eyes still closed.
"Do you see me complaining?" He lets go of her foot, but it continues to rest on his chest as he reaches into the water for the other. He works the flesh slowly, watching her features relax.
She nods. “I lost track of time.”
“The same work in progress you mentioned the other day?”
She nods again, opening her eyes to look at him. “It’s not as forthcoming as I’d like.”
“Well, I’m here for inspiration,” he winks at her.
“You might regret saying that.”
“I’ve never regretted fucking you, baby girl.”
She chuckles. “Are you serious?”
“About what? Fucking you? Deadly serious,” he grins.
“No. What you said about being here for inspiration.” She eyes him carefully. “Because I could do with that.”
“I’m here, ready and waiting,” Roman replies, dropping his voice an octave lower and smirking as he sees her eyes darken. “What d’you need, baby girl?”
She chews her lip. “What’s the freakiest thing you’ve ever done?”
“Excuse me?” He chuckles. “That’s what you need? My past escapades?”
She pouts. “I’ll tell you mine.”
“And will that be something you’ve written about or…” he grins as she pokes him in the chest with her toe. “Alright, alright.” He scrapes a hand over his face. “I mean, how freaky do you want?”
“You tell me.”
He eyes her carefully as he licks his lips debating whether to tell the truth or hold back. He buys time by reaching for his wine glass, but something about her eyes makes him opt for the former. “I… I had a threesome.”
She raises an eyebrow. “Now that I wouldn’t have guessed. Two women?”
He has the good grace to blush. “Okay, I’ve had two threesomes. Once with two chicks. Once with a chick and another guy.”
“Interesting.”
“Is this some kind of test?”
“I love how you ask that after telling me,” she chuckles. “No, it’s not. I’m just trying to work out the baseline.”
“For what?”
“I gave a blowjob in the back of a cab.”
Roman almost chokes on a sip of wine at this revelation and Kat grins over the rim of her glass. “Okay, c’mon, tell me. Why are you asking about this? A baseline for what?”
“I want you to do something for me.”
He doesn’t say anything, he just holds her gaze, willing her to spill the beans.
“I want to explore something,” she continues and he can sense the slight hesitation despite of what they’ve just shared with each other. “And I just wanted to work out whether you’d think I was crossing a line.”
“You’re worried you’re gonna corrupt me?”
“More that you’d think I was a freak.”
“Not a chance.”
She chews her lip. “Okay.”
He slides his hand gently over her foot once again as he drains his glass. “Tell me.”
She takes a deep breath, her eyes closing for a second, steadying herself before she opens them and holds his gaze as she speaks. “I want to not be in control.”
“Not in control of…” He’s already putting two and two together but he wants to hear her say it.
“I want you to control exactly when and how I can cum.”
“Like tease you?”
“More than that.”
“Edging?”
“Yes and more.”
“You want me to stop completely just before you cum?”
She nods. “My new character. She meets this guy. It’s what he does. And as much as I can do it myself-”
“That I’d like to see,” Roman grins and she rolls her eyes.
“Please?”
Without breaking eye contact, he drops his arm over the bath to place the wine glass back on the floor. With both hands free, he lets them slide over her feet and legs to slip under the water. Her thighs tense at his touch, her eyes widening slightly.
“I think that,” he murmurs, “will be a word you’ll be saying a lot then.”
She stares at him. “You’ll do it?”
“There isn’t much I wouldn’t do for you.”
The words hang in the air for a second longer than feels comfortable.
“Ro…” she breathes.
“I mean it. And not just this,” he says quietly.
“That… that means a lot,” she replies softly.
A silence blossoms between them, Roman’s hands still resting on the curve of her thighs, fingers splayed out across her skin. He wonders if he’s ruined the sexual tension that had arisen from her request, but as he swallows and then licks his lips, he sees her eyes flicker to his mouth. He lets his hands sink further up her thighs, easing them apart.
“Tell me how you did it to yourself.”
She blinks at him. “I… I just touched myself and then stopped.”
“What did it feel like?”
She sighs, her read rolling back on the lip of the bath. “Tortorous.”
He chuckles. “How many times?”
“A few…”
“And did you cum?”
She nods.
“How did it feel?”
“Amazing,” she breathes.
“I wasn’t joking when I said I wanted to see that,” he murmurs.
“Pervert,” she smirks.
“Your idea,” he replies. “You know this is gonna be as hard for me as it is for you?”
“How’d you figure that?”
“Making you cum is one of my favourite things,” he groans in mock-agony.
“I’d have thought all of this would play into your dominant side,” she cocks her head to one side.
He licks his lips, daring her to look at them. “Perhaps.”
“See,” she breathes. “You can’t help yourself.”
“I mean… The thought of you begging me… it is pretty fuckin’ delicious.”
She bites her lip. “What about the opposite?”
He raises an eyebrow.
“One idea,” she confesses. “Was that in the book, he tells her that if she makes a sound, he’ll stop.”
“Any other ideas?”
“Plenty,” she grins. And then she’s slipping from his grasp and standing. “C’mon, we gotta eat.”
He slides forward, hands on her legs, curling around to grip the back of her thighs, fingers brushing the curve of her ass. He stares up at her and then slowly drags his gaze down her body to his eye-level. He tips his head to the side and then looks back up at her with a glint in his eye.
“Behave,” she grins as she pushes his hands away and then steps out of the bath. Reaching for a towel, she hears the water splash and then a hand on her wrist, pulling her back.
His chest is solid behind her, hands sliding to her hips as he pulls her firmly against him, moving her so they’re both in view of the mirror above the vanity. Heat burns in the pit of her stomach as she watches him drop feather-light kisses to her shoulder. His hands slide over her stomach, up to her breasts and she inhales sharply as he cups them, his thumb and forefinger rolling her nipples until they tighten.
“Food can wait,” he murmurs against her throat, in between soft kisses.
“Ro…” she twists her head in an attempt to catch his lips.
Long fingers grip her chin, turning her head back to face the mirror.
“You said you had plenty of ideas.” His voice is dangerously low. “Well, so have I.”
She lets out of a soft whine as he raises his head and meets her gaze in the mirror.
“Starting with this.”
His hand slides over her stomach, whilst his foot nudges hers wider.
“If you look away or even close your eyes… I’ll stop.”
She nods, a shaky breath escaping her. His hand grazes her inner thigh and he smirks as he feels her body tense and her eyes close for a split second. He stills his hand and she whimpers softly as she holds his gaze again.
“That’s it, baby girl,” he breathes, his fingers finding her wet and warm. “Good girl…”
Fin.
Yes, I'm a tease. Sorry...

Hello, hello, my lovely readers! I'm back tonight to get the last three fandom prompts I had done up out and up! After this, I'll probably try to get one to two posts done up out of the ten ask-box requests by Thursday at the latest! So, kicking off tonight with another new fandom to this blog, the silly and fun Blush Blush! If you have Steam and haven't played it, I definitely strongly recommend it as a fun and addictive time-waster! This prompt and the next three will be based off this prompt here and I hope you'll all enjoy!
Put any character in my ask and I’ll try to find a song in my music that I think goes with them.
Nimh – Nimh is my first Blush Blush love. He’s sweet and soft and just the most comforting feeling character to me and I always associate just that lazy, comfortable, happy feeling of Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds with him.
Volks – Both for the general tone of the music and the obvious connection to his wolfish form, I had to go with Full Moon by A.R. Rahman. There’s some broodiness to the harmony, it’s a little slow to suit a boy who’s slow to warm up to people, but it’s got this underlying sweetness that you really see in Volks as you go through his route.
Kelby – Kelby’s an active guy and I see him listening to music during gym workouts or while out jogging, just things to get him pumped up. I really feel like Lethal Bizzle’s I Win is a go-to for him so it’s a song I associate with him!
Eli – Gay Bar by Electric Six, most definitely. It’s silly and fun and honestly, Eli would be the star of any bar he walked into, gay or not!
Anon – It’s funny because he definitely is not the lots of movement type but I always kind of hum I Like to Move It from Madagascar whenever I’m focusing on completing him in game. It’s the lemurs, man, the lemurs!
Garrett – I can’t quite explain it, it’s just the way the song affects me. But Home – A House on the Hill from the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood OST always feels like a warm hug and sunshine and comfort to me. And Garrett is all of those things and, as a bonus, we all know he gives the best hugs.
Dmitri – Okay, even I can’t fully explain this one, but first immediate thought and no others could compete – it’s Smooth by Santana ft. Rob Thomas. I think the music itself suits him – smooth, spicy, with a nice Latin flair to it and I honestly think that’s how he approaches love too. Give him all your love, don’t half-ass it because he won’t accept that at all!
Ichiban – I am pretty sure, if I recall correctly, there’s even a reference to it within Ichiban’s text in game but I definitely think that he both loves and that I strongly associate him with the Caramelldansen song!
William – Again, this one is based off a response he gives when talking in game about relatives in Bel-Air! It’s definitely the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song. I have no doubts he knows all the words to it too, haha!
Myx – Okay, but I gotta pay respect to the obvious inspiration for Myx and pick something by Ninja Sex Party! Since Road Trip is my favourite of theirs, that’s the one I went with!
Stirling – With Stirling, I don’t so much associate a song with his character so much as there’s just songs I can so firmly see him skating to. Like, I listen and I imagine our fabulous vampire just twirling away on the ice in this elaborate routine and the one I do this most for (other than plain out just anything by Tchaikovsky, who I think Stirling was friends with and whose music I think he uses in his routines often) is Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty, Op. 66: Act 1: Carabosse (The Bad Fairy).
Scale – I know he wants to be taken seriously so much, but I just can’t take Scale seriously. Like, at all…so my song choice for him couldn’t be serious either! Which is why Ninja Rap from Vanilla Ice is my go-to for him!

He’s In Love With Rock ‘n’ Roll
London
The Libertines story is a 2-sided story and after a few months off, Carl returned in the autumn of 2005 with Dirty Pretty Things and their 2-album existence was a much calmer time than what was going on in Pete’s camp.

There was always rumours that Pete and Carl had met up but nothing ever materialised but in 2006 they featured on a song together for the first time in 2 years. Babyshambles & Friends (which also included The Holloways, The Paddingtons, The Rakes, Mystery Jets, Larrikin Love, The Maccabees and more from the London scene) released a cover of The Clash song, Janie Jones, to raise money for Strummerville, the Joe Strummer Foundation. There was also a “grindie remix” featuring grime rappers, Lethal Bizzle and JME.

That isn’t the end of that story…
