All I wanted to know was what Eminem did to Megan Fox's wannabe vampire Fiancé, that's all. Now my YouTube is full of Eminem and 50 Cent Lore and how he is the OG Girl Dad.
What was I doing in the 2000s and 2010s exactly?

My friends and I were already into rap and breakdancing (and graffiti) when the movie Beat Street came out. We snuck into the local theater to see it because we couldn't afford movie tickets. This track instantly became our fave and it was the first rap song I learned word for word.

every fucked up aspect of rap was already an element of pop culture before pop devoured rap in the 90s. they only became particularly prevalent issues once the labels, which were already well known for abusing the women they signed as artists and hired as workers, chose the rap artists who matched their “work culture” as well as fit the image of black people in america that middle class white people had a desire to affirm. so when a person now says they dislike rap based on the problems within pop culture, to me, that’s just someone who is affirming a bigoted view

"What would become known as hip-hop sprang from a foundation of DJs with powerful sound systems who operated around the same time as DJ Kool Herc in the early 1970s. Disco King Mario, who lived one floor above Paradise Gray, who would himself go on to help create X Clan, in the Bronxdale Houses projects, threw some of hip-hop’s earliest jams with his Chuck Chuck City crew. Disco King Mario and Afrika Bambaataa were both members of the Black Spades gang.” and Mario lent equipment for some of Bambaataa’s earliest sets."
"Pete DJ Jones, a transplant from North Carolina, was popular in Manhattan club circles. He was the first DJ who many, including Kurtis Blow, ever witnessed working two turntables and duplicate copies of the same record, which become the foundation for DJing, extending the breaks of funk and soul songs. Pete DJ Jones also served as a mentor to Grandmaster Flash."
"Brooklyn’s Grandmaster Flowers is recognized as one of the earliest pioneers of hip-hop for mixing funk and disco records in sequence and throwing massive block parties. Flowers even opened for James Brown at Yankee Stadium in 1969."
"DJ Mister Cee (producer): That was the time when a lot of DJs was getting into the craft of DJing and buying them big kick-ass speakers—and I’m saying “kick-ass” because there used to be a sticker on the speaker that said “Kick Ass.” That was around that time that DJs would play outside and break into a lamppost. Nowadays, there’s an outlet in there. Back then, we would break into the lamppost and splice the wires up and connect to an extension cord. That’s how we would power up."

Agreed, I only got to hour 2 of 3.5, but I'm SO HAPPY this came back on my dash, because it explains everything that felt like it was missing between Kendrick and Drake's level of rapid-fire fury.
I also appreciate how the presenter informs us of his bias, but does give Drake credence where it is warranted, but also Man, Fuck Drake.
listen. i honestly do try my best to not be bitchy about stuff. but if you not-joking-joked that you wanted to watch a video essay from hbomb on the kendrick-drake rap beef. i think that you are obligated to watch fd signifier's 3 hour video essay. i KNOW the watch time is not the issue.
