Choose one Null to go on a date with: why him?

This is a deceptively challenging ask to answer, because they're all... hmm, not the most sociable people. But then, neither am I, lmfao.

They're all objectively terrible, the more I think about it, but it's one date; I've been on many terrible and awkward dates in my tenure as a creature on Earth.

On first pass, Ordo's out. We're similar enough in our outwardly cold and guarded demeanour, but he's exponentially more terrifying than me and he'd probably say something offensive by accident and it would all go downhill from there.

Mereel's also out. As fun as he'd be, he's waaaaay too intense in all the wrong ways. It would get awkward really fast.

I feel like A'den would be the most approachable and personable to go on a date with. He apparently has quite the jovial personality and I'm also a very funny creature so we'd definitely spend our time laughing. That's always a good thing for positive social interactions.

Runners up would be Jaing and Prudii. There isn't much info on Jaing's personality, but we can extrapolate that he's thoughtful and methodical, and probably has a decent (if morbid) sense of humor. Prudii's glib cynicism could be fun to play with, and we're both huge nerds so there'd be plenty to talk about.

Kom'rk I would want to deck, and he'd know it and be all smug about it, I reckon. I'm sure he'd be quite pleasant on the surface but I'd likely feel like I was in an interrogation rather than on a date.

So there you have it! A'den gets the honour of dating an opossum :P

oops i wrote a Payneland first kiss ft. the aftermath of a probably horrible case, Charles being a little bit hysterical, and Edwin being a gentle little bitch Charles is happy to see him. He really, really is. He’s so chuffed it feels like his whole body is fizzing with energy and his head is pounding with something that might be pain or might be relief. And his grip on Edwin’s shoulders is only half meant to keep himself upright. It’s also because Edwin is properly, actually here in front of him, as solid as anything gets beneath Charles’ fingers these days. 

He doesn’t think he’s stopped grinning since Edwin hauled him upright. 

“Edwin,” he says, and can’t quite piece together anything better than, “you bloody genius!” 

And then Charles surges forward and kisses him. He’s aiming for Edwin’s cheek but he’s a little giddy and his eyesight is still a bit blurry and he ends up with his lips pressed to the corner of Edwin’s mouth. 

He feels more than he sees when Edwin startles at the contact, but doesn’t think he has it in him right now to pull back for a talk or a scolding or, god forbid, a lecture on impetuous behaviour. So, he tightens his hands around Edwin’s shoulders and tugs him in a little ways, until their foreheads are pressed together. Edwin blinks a few times and Charles feels his eyelashes flutter against his own cheek. 

“You did it!”. He can hardly believe the words as he speaks them and he keeps kind of laughing in little bursts of uncontrollable giggles. “I thought I was going to - that you were - I can’t even really -” 

Edwin, who has been relaxing against him by careful degrees, finally jolts into action and brings an arm up around Charles’ shoulders. 

“It’s alright,” he says, which Charles thinks is pretty thick for someone as smart as Edwin because of course he’s alright! Edwin just single-handedly swooped in and saved the day and dredged Charles up from the bottom of a literal and metaphorical hole and now he’s got his arm around Charles, close enough that each of his unnecessary breaths stirs the curls around Charles’ ear. He’s a lot fucking more than alright. 

Edwin’s hand starts to rub little circles between his shoulder blades. It feels nice.

“Mate,” he tries again. “You are…” but he doesn’t quite know what Edwin is other than the most important person in the world and, anyway, he can’t finish the sentence because Edwin cuts him off in a tone that Charles still thinks is far too serious for the situation. 

“Charles, you seem a touch, well.” A slight pause. “For lack of a better word, hysterical.” 

Is he hysterical? Charles doesn’t think so, but then again he’s never been great at thinking things through properly at the best of times. 

“Also, I must ask.” Charles’s eyes are only centimeters away from Edwin’s, and he watches Edwin squeeze his close. Eyelashes flutter together. “Did you mean to kiss me?”  

Charles blinks once.

“Uh,” he says. “Yeah, mate.” 

The hand on his back tightens, fingers gripping the fabric of his polo and that feels pretty good too, like Edwin is clinging to him with all the same desperation swirling up inside Charles. Like maybe he’s something solid even when he feels as insubstantial as ghosts can get. 

“Well,” Edwin says, finally, with a posh little sniff like he’s right fucking pleased with himself. “That is good to know.” 

Charles collapses against him, eventually, when he finally starts breathing steadier and the heavy weight of exhaustion settles over his shoulders. When the giddy adrenaline leaves him feeling a little more cracked open than he’d like. Edwin just gathers him close with the same possessive gesture as his hand. 

There’s a soft brush of lips against his temple. He smiles into the collar of Edwin’s coat and lets himself drift, warm and soft and held together

I've been seeing a lot of posts lately talking about how no one comments/reblogs/replies/etc anymore, and, as someone who comments regularly on a lot of fanworks, it sometimes makes me wonder if my efforts are worth anything. Then I remember how much happiness I get from comments on my own work/posts and how much the community of fandom can matter, and I remember the power that can be found in spreading joy instead of disappointment.

So -- to everyone who comments on fanfiction: thank you. You make the writing process worthwhile and so very rewarding. You make people happy every day.

To all the people who reblog art and gifsets and meta and anything else with enthusiastic tags: thank you. You make people smile and promote interesting conversations and make being on Tumblr so much more fun.

To anyone who sends people asks about their works, whether it's unprompted or part of an ask game: thank you. You give people reasons to talk about things they love and feel like a part of a community.

Chinastuck: the beta kids

tl;dr for the uninitiated: what if all homestuck characters were chinese people

John Egbert: 光勇 (Guang Yong). Lives in Beijing (im sorry /j). Han, Mongolian, and some Korean ancestry.

egbert means "bright edge" and guang means "bright" and also sounds a little like john even if its the surname. john means god is gracious, which is not really a type of name chinese people give their kids so i just went with a common masculine name that sounds good with guang: yong, which means "brave" which i thought was fitting. i think dad egbert definitely calls them by the diminutive yongyong.

June Egbert might choose the name 小玉 (Xiaoyu), meaning "little jade", in reference to her sister.

Rose Lalonde: 刘秀兰 (Liu Xiulan). Lives somewhere in Jiangsu, probably Shanghai. Hmong, Jewish Han, and Kazakh ancestry.

i literally just went with a random common surname that vaguely sounded like lalonde here. xiulan means elegant orchid, so it's a flower name like rose and i think it fits her vibes. she shares the character xiu with roxy's name, tianxiu.

transmasc rose probably steals his name from a book character.

rose is very similar to canon i think, except she lives in a penthouse in central shanghai. i want to say initially she feels her heritage doesn't matter to her but later in life she tries to reconnect with not being "100% han".

Dave Strider: 赵大伟 (Zhao Dawei). Lives in Chongqing. Hmong, Jewish Han, and Kazakh ancestry (same as Rose).

zhao has a similar meaning to strider and was also a surname of the emperors so it has a connection to royalty. this works for both the lotr reference and king david. dawei is... a generic chinese boys name thats the name you give your kid if you want their english name to be david. it means "extraordinary".

david means "beloved" and every single chinese name like that is feminine. Dove Strider takes this as inspiration for the name Xinyan, spelled either 心燕 meaning "beloved swallow" or 心焱 meaning "beloved flame" instead of the more conventional 心妍 meaning "beloved beauty".

dave struggles with their cultural heritage more actively than rose does, and thus leans hard into their sichuanese identity. i headcanon them as making fun of chengdu (chongqing's rival in representing the cultural center of sichuan) in addition to making fun of northern chinese culture. SICHUAN RAHH

Jade Harley: 林玉平 (Lin Yuping). Lives in rural Shaanxi. Han, Mongolian, and some Korean ancestry (same as John).

lin has similar meaning to both harley and halley, meaning grove/forest. yuping means "peaceful jade".

Jude Harley might choose the name 洋 (Yang), meaning "ocean" in the sense of expansive, or he might not feel a need to change his name. swapping names with his sibling is also a possibility.

i think her upbringing just translates to the rural northwest well? also i think its kinda cool she'd grow up near a section of the great wall of china. i could see her engaging in cultural traditions like papercutting and folk singing :> also buddhist jade real and true im not projecting trust

one thing I haven't seen anyone say about watcher yet, but has really disappointed me, is that only three months ago they mentioned in the truth about filming ghost files video that they had to let go of 5 (if I'm remembering the number properly) employees. and when I watched that video I was disappointed that hey hadn't planned the business properly to avoid things like that, but they are primarily creatives, so I figured there would be some business mistakes made along the way. but then hearing they just hired the 2 worth it guys and are reviving an expensive show... I feel like they could've prevented the lay offs better

Welp! While college is busy murdering my art drive, I guess I should post some backlog stuff.

This here’s a character I’ve been working on for a bit, for a Renaissance fantasy setting that I and some friends have been putting together. Her name’s Kimrin Lin!!

Some neat little tidbits:

- That left arm is a prosthetic! While it uses the setting’s magic to function, converting heat from its inner furnace into mechanical motion and magical impulses, it’s not perfect. Accurate, but not precise, and really only useful in swordfighting as a support more than anything. It’s not a battle injury—She was just born without an arm.

- She’s a Half-Drake, Half-Human (“Tallman”)! Specifically, her Drake father was descended from a group who originally adapted to life in volcanoes. Her scales are black because they were inspired by volcano snails—they’re actually living iron and mineral plating!

- The enormous sword (and her cloak) are from of one of her past jobs. As a Hunter of the Ruby Contingent of Kadara, Kimrin was tasked with duties somewhere between a park ranger, an ecologist, and a big game hunter in the modern day—managing local plant life, maintaining a good balance in the local ecosystem without letting it affect villages under her previous Mission’s watch, and handling the occasional “monster” (rather, megafauna) that got too close to a human settlement.

- The “Black Knight” moniker is from her current occupation! Having studied an additional few years under a Magician’s ministry in Kadara, she’s picked up some academic means of fulfilling her interests. Nowadays, Lin wanders from village to city, documenting the local cultures, ecosystems, foods, etc, in a kind of travelogue. The same sense of justice that drove her to leave the Ruby Contingent, however, also drives her to interfere in some local affairs—stopping executions, helping discriminated people find new homes, etcetera. This kind of nuisance-making has earnt her something of a reputation, and now, exaggerated news of her ‘wicked, disruptive’ deeds is traveling faster than she is.

- She has, in fact, been burnt at the stake before for practicing magic. For the most part, it’s not really that interesting, although the ash does get irritating pretty early into the process.

honestly my best advice to anyone wanting to get into kingdom hearts but daunted by the """complex""" plot is:

Don’t be afraid to replay the games. In fact, you should replay the games. As soon as you find yourself forgetting earlier details, replay the games. When you finish a game and are confused? Replay it. If you don't have time to replay? Watch a playthrough or a cutscene compilation. You'd be surprised at how easily re-experiencing the games refreshes your memory.

People love to be soooo high-and-mighty about "well I played this game when I was a child so I am an expert" while conveniently leaving out that they skip all the cutscenes because they "don't play the games for the plot."

I will say, there's nothing wrong with enjoying the KH combat system better than the story; KH isn't a story for everyone (especially if you don't want to have to come up with your own explanations for things that go unexplained; Nomura's said in an interview that he doesn't like stories that overexplain). But it's just a dick move to not even try to understand the story then go around claiming it's "dumb and stupid and everything's a retcon and Nomura was drunk when he came up with the idea for Coded" (he was not)

prime example: the "Nobodies regrow their hearts """retcon."""" People like to get all huffy about DDD (they're determined to hate it cuz it's gay) and the time travel and Nobodies-regrowing-their-hearts but like. That shit was foreshadowed! Hinted at ever since the Nobodies' introduction in KH2!! You need to have a Heart to have Emotions, and you can't cry without Emotions, so like. When Sora's in Twilight Town in KH2 and he cries when he leaves HPO, that's Roxas having a heart. When Axel cries for Roxas in their weird metaphysical limbo scene when Axel dies? That's Axel having a heart. I get so fucking mad when people shit on this plot point because IT'S THERE. IT'S BEEN THERE THE WHOLE TIME!
