When They Were Fans: When Wrestlers Were Fans Part 4

Hey everyone ! I am back with Part 4 of my article series about when our favorite wrestlers were just like us , fans. If you have not read Parts 1-3 go check them out !

‘ The Tribal Chief ’ Roman Reigns with Macho Man Randy Savage , Miss Elizabeth, Hulk Hogan and posing with a cut out of Trish Stratus. Roman grew up around the wrestling business with his father, Sika , and uncle , Afa , being in the WWE as The Wild Samoans. He got to meet a few of his childhood heroes if he attend shows. With wrestling being in his Bloodline , Reigns was trained by his father to wrestle.

Noam Dar and Drew McIntyre. Noam said that Drew came to his high school for a charity wrestling match against his one of his teachers. Dar was 13 years old at the time. He also got the chance to meet and thought he was a superhuman. However , when McIntyre returned to Scotland in 2014 , Dar got the chance to travel with him and even face him in the ring. In a match in Insane Championship Wrestling , Drew kicked Noam off of a balcony. Dar describes the future Hall of Famer as one of his favorite opponents and a good friend.

Brian Myers with Triple H , Kurt Angle , and Jerry ‘ The King ’ Lawler . Being a lifelong wrestling fan and getting to meet his heroes , Myers started training in 2004 alongside tag team partner and close friend , Matt Cardona. Both wrestled for WWE until being released. Myers is currently signed to TNA and Cardona is with GCW. Both are hosts of the popular podcast , The Major Wrestling Figure Podcast.

Damian Priest and The Undertaker. Priest said that he was a huge fan of The Deadman growing up as well as the late , Pedro Morales and Razor Ramon ( Scott Hall ) . At Wrestlemania XL after winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, Priest was congratulated by his childhood hero in front of his family and Judgement Day teammates.

Zelina Vega and Jeff Hardy. During a WWE show in North Carolina, Zelina decided to do a tribute to her favorite wrestler. She decided to do a Twist As Fate which is Jeff’s signature move into her match against Bayley. After doing this , she sent a message on her X account to Jeff and his brother , Matt, by saying that she had nothing but love for them.

Liv Morgan with John Cena . The WWE Women’s World Championship has stated that she had a huge crush on Cena as a kid. She also says that Cena was one of her biggest influences as a wrestler. She even took part in the photo shoot to celebrate Cena’s 20 year anniversary in WWE alongside Austin Theory , R-Truth , and Carmella.

My Final Thoughts:

I absolutely love hearing the stories of our favorite wrestlers being fans of other wrestlers and getting to work with them. It makes me happy. I especially loved the story Noam Dar told about Drew McIntyre.

The Bloodline Series: An Unfinished Story

In the world of professional wrestling, the careful crafting of storylines is what keeps fans on the edge of their seats. Wrestlemania, the grandest stage of them all, is where these narratives reach their pinnacle. However, sometimes even the most compelling opportunities slip through the fingers of creative decision-makers, leaving fans disappointed and questioning what could have been.

Cody Rhodes, a name synonymous with wrestling legacy, emerged as the perfect contender to challenge Roman Reigns for one of his coveted championship belts at Wrestlemania 39 (2023). For fans, this wasn't just about crowning another champion; it was about concluding a narrative that had been evolving for years. More recently, viewers were engrossed by Cody's documentary, "American Nightmare: Becoming Cody Rhodes," and it became apparent that the climax of his journey (and subsequently, the documentary) should have culminated in a triumphant victory on the grandest stage of all. Taking the WWE Championship that his late father, Dusty Rhodes, never secured would have been the ultimate feel-good moment. Dusty was passed over for the title in favour of Macho Man Randy Savage, and regrettably, history appeared to repeat itself. Cody’s victory would have been a powerful tribute to his father's legacy whilst also strengthening his emotional connection with the audience.

But how could this have been executed without compromising Roman's reign? One solution lies in the storytelling itself. WWE could have refrained from putting both championship belts on the line, therefore allowing Cody to secure a monumental victory without diminishing Roman's position. This approach would have maintained the excitement of the story while preserving Roman's dominance. Moreover, Cody's victory could have been the start of a captivating downward spiral for Roman's character. Grappling to retain his remaining championship, Roman's increasing desperation could have led to him questioning the loyalty of those around him. This intriguing twist would have added layers to his character, making him more gripping and complex.

An additional consequence of WWE's creative decision was the necessity to introduce a new World Heavyweight title (currently held by the ever reliable Seth Rollins), as it was now evident that Roman was truly unbeatable, WWE had booked themselves into a corner where no one was a true threat. It's difficult not to assume that Cody was meant to be victorious at Wrestlemania, and a last-minute decision led to Roman's victory and, consequently, the introduction of a new title. Along similar lines, the once-menacing Money in the Bank briefcase has lost some of its suspense, as it's now evident that, if Cody couldn’t beat Roman Reigns, instilling confidence in a successful Damian Priest cash-in is going to be a challenge. Despite Damian having the support of the Judgement Day, Roman still remains strong with the remnants of the Bloodline, and with turmoil within both factions, the threat of the briefcase is being overshadowed.

Looking ahead, there's still an opportunity for WWE to rectify the situation. Rather than drawing out the Bloodline story with unnecessary twists, it's time to embrace the potential for evolution within the faction. An eagerly awaited feud between Jimmy and Jey Uso would provide a fresh storyline and further character development leading into Wrestlemania XL (2024). A feud between the brothers would captivate fans' attention, highlighting their individual strengths and motivations. Also the idea of the formation of a brother faction with Jimmy, Jey, and Solo against Roman would give fans something to rally behind.

Finally, the enigmatic Paul Heyman's role shouldn't be underestimated. To invigorate his character, Heyman could acquire a new protégé. This could be an opportunity to bring in a rising star from NXT (or mentor a recent call up), injecting new blood into the main roster while giving fans a fresh dynamic to invest in.

In the pro wrestling universe, missed opportunities can often become catalysts for a new and exciting direction. While Cody Rhodes' Wrestlemania victory would have been a fitting tribute to his legacy, the path not taken opens doors for future innovation and the potential for a new ending to Cody’s story.

• Brian leads the audience into a singalong of "Maybe It's Because I’m A Londoner" just before "Love of My Life".

• Originally listed in the setlist, "Don't Stop Me Now" is dropped; but the vocal solo section performed during the 2014 tour, "Gimme All Your Love", makes a reappearance into the set just before "I Want I All".

“[…] The key is that Lambert makes it clear very early on that this is not an impersonation of the still mourned Mercury. “I love him as much as you love him,” he tells the crowd. “My goal is to celebrate the amazing music of Queen and bring you back to why you liked them in the first place.”

This he succeeds wholly in doing, not least because the band he’s fronting is still so strong. Alighting on a stage the shape of a giant Q, both Roger Taylor (initially in shades) and his son Rufus sit behind full drum kits, with Brian May heading out front (grey mullet occasionally blowing in the breeze). As expected, the reclusive bassist John Deacon isn’t present but a shot of him on the giant screens brings loud applause.

The set list is flawless, as one might expect from a band who have crafted some of the finest rock songs of the 20th Century. What’s intriguing is the presence of Lambert seems to have give the tracks a fresh energy - ‘I Want It All’ is simply colossal, ‘One Vision’ extraordinary and Lambert’s exhortation to “all you fat ass bitches” somehow works during ‘Fat Bottom Girls’.

The only glaring omission comes in the form of ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ getting skipped over. But as Lambert says himself, ‘You know what the problem is with this band? Too many hits!”

Queen truly know how to put on a show. Ever track feels like a finale - with huge solos, near-operatic vocals and pomp set to 11. There is an intergenerational drum battle, a gold glitter drop, a mirror ball descends for ‘Who Wants To Live Forever’, lasers comb the the entire O2 at one point and and (bizarrely) footage of Metropolis during a performance of 'Radio Gaga' (it makes more sense given it was a soundtrack to Mercury’s ‘Love Kills’).

At one point May straps a GoPro onto his guitar, both so that everyone can check out his playing but also so that he can point it towards the audience and capture the O2’s reaction to him rattling through ‘Stone Cold Crazy’. The screens behind May during ‘Last Horizon’ will, depending on your persective, either recall the timeless search for man’s true knowledge of the cosmos or remind you of a Windows’ 97 screensaver.

The band seem genuinely moved and certainly see to enjoy themselves. Naturally their late bandmate never feels far away. When May plays a solo of ‘Love Of My Life’ he talks about how much he missed Mercury. “There was this man who used to sit behind me…” he says thoughtfully. “It makes me happy to sing his songs really”. Nothing is taken for granted. At times footage of Mercury accompanies the action, allowing him to contribute 24 years after leaving the stage. This is used most effectively on ‘Days Of Our Lives’ where Taylor takes the mic and performs a gutsy vocal, accompanied by vintage shots of the band mugging to the camera. This isn’t a mawkish tribute, this is a real, vibrant rock show.

What's interesting is Lambert at times seems even camper than Mercury ever was - not least when he seems to have borrowed part of his costume from Macho Man Randy Savage. It feels strange to say it but it thankfully it shows how far we’ve come that a man can lick a microphone, reclining on a chaise longe, raise one Cara Delevigne-esque eyebrow and pause during 'Killer Queen' after delivering ‘Guaranteed to blow your...’. The crowd clearly love it.

When Lambert chugs from a gold champagne bottle and spits it into the air, he addresses the drenched front row. “Did I get you wet lady? Rock'n'roll that's what I am supposed to do! It’s like the SeaWorld show up here.” The only criticism? Lambert’s English accent is as horrible as he says it is. […]”

Music and Theme Songs in WWE

Several Movies and TV Shows are often known for their music, the background score and overall soundtrack. WWE is no different, as several musical pieces from the company have become mainstream, and are easily identifiable to any individual as being part of the professional wrestling world.

Stone Cold Steve Austin’s iconic glass shatter or John Cena’s You Can’t See Me Now, are some of the few examples how not just the superstar, but the theme itself becomes iconic among the audiences.

WWE has had plenty of great theme songs over the years, which have either been produced in-house or taken from popular bands and artists. We look at the history of music in professional wrestling and it’s evolution over the years.

  The Initial Days

Music didn’t become a major part of professional wrestling until the 80s. A Few wrestlers used music while making their entrances in the 60s and 70s, but the idea didn’t become mainstream until the 80s, which is often referred to as the peak of professional wrestling. Superstars like Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Fabulous Freebirds, etc., started using music in their entrances. Hulk Hogan’s iconic “I Am a Real American” is bound to take any wrestling fan on a nostalgia trip.

  Jim Johnston’s influence

The practice continued with WWE using Jim Johnston to produce theme songs for the superstars. As time passed by, more and more wrestlers started to get identified by their entrance music. Jim Johnston is widely regarded as the man behind music becoming a major aspect of a wrestler’s character. Austin, Undertaker, The Rock, etc., are some of the iconic themes which were composed by Johnston, who played all the instruments in his compositions himself. Johnston also produced music for WWE video packages, PPVs, tributes, vignettes, etc.

Johnston has also produced music for some of WWE’s movies including The Chaperone, That's What I Am, and The Reunion. After working for over three decades, Johnston’s contract was terminated by WWE, ending his association in 2017. CFO$ have been solely responsible for the production of music in WWE since then.

Johnston was known for the production of full-fledged music, while CFO$ has largely produced small snippets which are looped over and over.

  WWE Music Group

WWE founded a child company simply for distribution of it’s music and even has a channel dedicated for the same. Shinsuke Nakamura and Bobby Roode are prime examples of music doing wonders for a character in recent times, as their sublime theme songs immediately made them stand out after their debut in NXT. Nakamura’s music video currently has 44 million views on WWE Music Youtube Channel, which is quite a telling statistic.

  Defining a Character

With the importance of theme songs increasing, characters started using different music for their characters, to connect to the audiences better. Bayley’s cheerful theme song was ditched in favor of a darker theme after her heel turn, The Rock’s iconic music changed after he went Hollywood, and several other changes took place.

This helped the audiences at home and in the audience to understand the character in a better way, which once again highlights the importance of theme songs in professional wrestling.

When They Were Fans: When Wrestlers Were Just Fans: Part 1

We have our favorite wrestlers, but did you know that they were once like us? In this article , I will be talking about how the wrestlers that we all know and love were once fans of wrestlers and continue to be. I’ll be featuring photos of our favorite wrestlers when they were younger and them with their favorite wrestlers.

WWE Superstar, Drew McIntyre , with Bret ‘ The Hitman ’ And Yokozuna. Drew stated in his autobiography, ‘ A Chosen Destiny : My Story ’, that getting to meet Yokozuna was the first time he saw a professional wrestler in the flesh.

WWE Superstar, Chelsea Green, with Kelly Kelly. Chelsea has stated that Kelly Kelly was the reason why she got into professional wrestling. She also said that her gear is a tribute to the one time Divas Champion.

All Elite Wrestling star , Anna Jay , with The Garcia Twins ( FKA The Bella Twins ) . Anna stated that she began watching wrestling in middle school and wanted to get in the ring because of them , with her favorite twin being Nikki.

WWE Superstar, Rhea Ripley , with her cutout of The Miz. The former Women’s World Champion has said that The Miz was her all time wrestling crush.

Former WWE Superstar and Current AEW Star , Adam ‘ Edge ’ Copeland and Bret ‘ The Hitman ’ Hart. The future WWE Hall of Famer was a 19 year old up and coming wrestler when he was in the audience for a talk show appearance his hero and fellow WWE Hall of Famer was doing. Copeland says he is grateful for Hart helping him get into WWE.

Matt Cardona with the late Razor Ramon/Scott Hall and Macho Man Randy Savage. Cardona has said on social media that they were two of his favorites as a kid. He even got to hold the Intercontinental Championship when Razor was champion.

Kofi Kingston with WWE Hall of Famer and one half of The Rock N Roll Express, Ricky Morton. Kofi stated that Ricky Morton was one of his favorites and the two linked back up at Wrestlemania 33.

My Final Thoughts:

Part 1 was so fun to write. It was really cool to see that these wrestlers are fans like us. And like Rhea , my first wrestling crush was The Miz. My current one is Drew McIntyre.

To a lot of people, punk seems like a genre without much in the way of depth or variety. When the initial punk explosion happened, though, a lot of people used the freedom it promised to try all kinds of new approaches, and I wanted to put something together that captures that side of punk, so here’s a mix (that, even after a lot of trimming is admittedly probably still overlong) featuring all kinds of less-heard stuff that came out of the punk explosion and the aftershocks of post-punk.
