Hua Cheng is not the reward for Xie Lian's suffering. Hua Cheng suffered because Xie Lian suffered after all. Xie Lian was just lucky that someone....loved him that much.
There is no grand amazing world altering moral lesson at the end of TGCF, though some may say staying on the path of good and righteousness no matter what evil comes your way. However, in truth, Xie Lian stayed good because he couldn't bear to be evil. Hurting people has only ever hurt him. The way he so deeply regrets what he did in the past, it shames him because seeing his enemies suffer would have never brought him satisfaction. The same way Bai Wuxiang had to keep finding new enemies to fight because revenge doesn't make the pain go away and won't bring back what was lost. It's not a revelation that revenge is bad or a waste of time, but that it won't change how broken you are inside.
Xie Lian stayed true to himself but the reason he's so happy at the end of TGCF is not because of that. Hua Cheng would love him no matter what he did after all, and Hua Cheng knew Xie Lian so well, right down to the worst he was capable of, he knew Xie Lian would never hurt people, but it ended up boiling down to Hua Cheng choosing Xie Lian over and over again. Through the pain and suffering and sorrow. After everything, Xie Lian was just lucky.
It's painful, knowing that that's exactly how life works. Xie Lian was lucky that there was someone willing to fight for him and by his side for 800 years. Xie Lian was loved and adored the way everyone deserves to be loved and adored. A home was created for him and his pain did not feel meaningless at the end.
But what about Qi Rong? The neglected child who didn't get his happily ever after, except in headcanons? He didn't ask to have bad adults that never corrected him. He didn't ask to.crave attention so much that he'd rather be tortured than ignored.
What about He Xuan who lost everything for something that was never his fault? Getting revenge didn't get that back, it just made him lose more. Where is the home and happiness that He Xuan deserves once and for all?
What about Bai Wuxiang..... The version of Xie Lian that never got a Hua Cheng. That just kept suffering till he went mad.
What about Shi Qingxuan who had luck for majority of his life but will now live and die in insignificance, once again through no fault of his own. Or is he at fault for never asking his brother how he took care of the problem?
What about Ling Wen who loved and killed but never stopped loving. Who went to great lengths to revive her lover just to lose it all. What about Ling Wen who achieved so much but has lost one of her best friends and won't get the one she loves?
Unlucky. That's just it. Things didn't work out for them.
In the grand scheme of things, whether you're evil or good, sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't. Not all bad guys 'reap the consequences of their actions'. Not all good guys get a happy ending. Xie Lian was lucky, and I'm so happy for him. But every time I remember the others....it brings me to tears.

i think we've witnessed the start of mxtx's villain arc
if you start reading from SVSSS all the way to TGCF in your quest to finish all of mxtx's books, it really goes from "speed run a relationship haha" to "speed? NAH a relationship".
(we love it regardless)

Another idea: Hualian both get reverted back to kids with no memories beyond being 9. But they still have their powers.
So we have two children lost in the woods with the powers of a high God and a ghost king and no knowledge of how they got there and are Freaking out about the sentient silk and sword following them.
Honger doesn’t have his memories of Xie Lian, so he doesn’t have a purpose, but he starts to like this weirdly polite and skilled boy lost with him and might have decided he cares about him and is going to do everything he can to keep him safe while they figure out where they are and how to get back to Xianle.
Meanwhile, Yin Yu tracks them down. But they assume he’s a kidnapper and blast butterflies and spirit energy whenever he gets close.
He’s not paid enough.

random FengQing fic idea that just popped into my head.
Mu Qing has loved Feng Xin for centuries, and has been able to not do anything about it for eight of them. Until HuaLian. He's confronted with the fact every time that he sees them be happy and in love that he never will be.
It's starts to bother him
Until one day (either by chance or seeking them out) he meets a ghost/encounters something that would take/lock his love away. Make him not feel it every time he thinks of or sees Feng Xin
So, picture this:
Feng Xin waking up one day to Mu Qing not giving a single shit about him. No secretive glances during meetings, no knowing looks that tell their own story, not half formed smiles, or seeking each other out for spars
nothing.
Just complete apathy
It drives Feng Xin *insane*

I touched on this a bit on my Paper Flowers fic but --
What gets me about the height difference between Hua Cheng and Xie Lian is that, for most of Hua Cheng's life he was shorter than Xie Lian, and he must have thought of Xie Lian as this larger than life figure in his head. Much like how you look up to your idols and all that.
So to go to his true height and realize he's like a full head taller must've been so surreal for him. To realize that Xie Lian was relatively short compared to a lot of gods, as opposed to that 'larger than life' figure in his head. It must've been such a weird experience for Hua Cheng to have to look down to talk to him, or to bend down to hug him and kiss him.
And it must've been so painful to realize that that small body protected him when he was young, and suffered so much in front of him.

there's just something so beautiful abt hong'er being super conscious of his red eye and now hua cheng making the colour red his entire personality (also contributed by the fact that gege gave him a red umbrella and his coral earrings were red too 🥺 👉👈)

Through the entirety of the novel we see how Xie Lian self deprecates and brushes off his own needs and all of that.
We see the backstory and everything for his first two ascensions.
What really gets me though is how pointed it all becomes, how blatant the deepness of his eight centuries of wounds go during the half a page in the 7seas translation of volume 7, in the heavenly capital when we see Xie Lian on the brink doubting everything about who he as a person is because he can see the potential in the accusation that he himself could be Bai Wuxiang.
Like my poor boy.
And the way that Jun Wu likely would have been able to pin *everything* on Xie Lian in that moment with Xie Lian accepting it fully if not for 1. Hongjing, obviously, exposing Jun Wu's true face, but 2 and more pertinent to what I'm attempting to talk about, Hua Cheng in four simple sentences dispelling all of Xie Lian's self-doubt about who he is.
Like damn.
So much hinged on that one moment, and it could have gone so very, very differently.

So yea. I've been at Port Aventura for the last 3 days and I thought... TGCF characters at amusement parks headcanons >:3
- Xie Lian is definitely the type to always lose items in rollercoster. Making him quite sad sometimes. It can go from a necklace to a water bottle he forgot he had in his pocket? I feel like Xie Lian would enjoy all types of attractions. Especially if he's with his friends or partner.
- I feel like Hua Cheng would be the rich friend. Always buying fast pass for the group. Making sure everyone can do what they want (especially Xie Lian). And mostly know all the attractions that could be enjoyable by each of the groups thanks to Yin Yu's help in planning the trip, and being sure of what everyone can or can't do. + he loves thrill rides.
- He Xuan clearly enjoys amusement parks, especially those with country themes... for all types of foods, deserts, and mostly buffet. Despite most of them being low quality. He'll always rant at how expensive most of the food is. He also loves hearing the scream of does doing thrill rides. Looking at them while eating.
- Shi Qingxuan would love amusement parks but especially mixed with other events? Like Christmas or Halloween. To see all the actors, take pictures and have fun. They would take aesthetic pictures of food. Meanwhile, He Xuan eat in the background.
- Feng Xin would always be in a competition with Mu Qing, trying to show he can do more thrill rides than the other. But they would both end up mostly sick. So they would go chill together after. And maybe talk about the goods and bads of the rides... until Xie Lian would appear, and they banter would start again.
- Ling Wen would be the savior when the group would go in amusement parks in other countries. Becoming the personal translator of the group. She would mostly enjoy the time outside. Going to the pretty areas of the amusement parks. And look at parades while drinking coffee.
- Qi Rong would go to the kids' area and do all the attractions with Gu Zi. The duo runs from one side to another. Leaving Lan Qianqiu exhausted after half a day of running after them.
My brain start to die with the exhaustion so I'll stop here an maybe keep going if I have the strength tomorrow- if some of you have other headcanon please share 👀

Random TGCF Thought of the Day
TIL that Feng Xin's bow Fengshen means "Wind God" and my mind went to some very strange places.
Places such as SQX should try using the bow sometime.
Places such as hey wouldn't it be funny if we had something like that scene where the martial gods turn into a sword, but Shi Qingxuan turns into a bow
Places such as AU where something something Shi Qingxuan are paired up and she is Feng Xin's spiritual device (is this soul eater? i've never watched soul eater but i vaguely remember something about sentient weapons in that)
Places such as an Utena AU where Feng Xin draws Fengshen from Shi Qingxuan's chest.

Near the first chapters of TGCF, there was a mention of the Heavenly Officials being scared of Xie Lian after his second fall. They were worried that he'd turn into a dark spirit or calamity. When they realised he'd go through life getting stepped on, they relaxed and rejoiced.
TGCF BOOK 5 SPOILERS!!
The first time I read that part of the book I was a little worried because it would mean the Emperor would have to come down and punish the child he seemed to love the most. Hilariously, no one would be happier that Xie Lian became a Calamity than him. XD The Heavenly Officials would run to him for help and he'd be like "Oh no, that's my prodigy. He can do whatever he wants to you. I don't mind." ^_^

As a true dumbass with a strong brainrot here's a random sleep deprived thought - Who's divinations are better, Madam Meiyin from SVSSS or Mei Nianqing from TGCF? Or are they equally good at it??? Is there a fic where these two interact?? Probably not but I can't get it out of my head. I might be back if more coherent thoughts to this pop up.
But like, it would be kinda funny to see them fighting about divination. Or share opinions like some sort of astrology star sign obsessed mean girls.

the significance of the number 3 as it relates to xie lian and hua cheng has been widely noted (i.e. 3 ascensions, hua cheng's name san lang, the 33 gods he challenged just to name a few). hua cheng's title 血雨探花 is officially and literally translated as crimson rain sought flower* but I'd like to point out that 探花 is a title from the imperial examination (科舉 ke ju) that originated around the tang dynasty. the rankings are 狀元 (zhuang yuan for 1st), 榜眼 (bang yan for 2nd), and 探花 for 3rd
*based on what I've seen on tumblr. i didn't read the english translation

If Xie Lian stumbled upon an erotic novel, he’d definitely skim through the sex scenes but stay for the plot
