Did you know that, when Latin American countries were becoming independent from Spain, 5 of their anthems were composed by Catalans?
In Argentina 🇦🇷, the government that resulted from the 1810 May Revolution chose an anthem composed by Blai Parera i Moret.
In Chile 🇨🇱, the anthem chosen in 1828 was composed by Ramon Carnicer i Batlle.
Mexico's 🇲🇽 1854 contest to choose a national anthem was won by Jaume Nunó i Roca.
When Panama 🇵🇦 became independent in 1904, they commissioned Albert Galimany i Pujol to compose their national anthem.
Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 adopted its current national anthem in 1952, choosing a song composed in 1867 by Fèlix Astol i Artés.

Thoughts: End of a Century
Tumblr media
I saw this film maybe a year ago and really liked it. I’ve seen a lot of gay-themed films and it’s generally really hard to find something I haven’t seen before and yet of good quality. End Of A Century somehow manages that by the end. Spoilers after the cut.
If you were to put this film into a category, it would be one of those romantic yet cynical arthouse movies, like The Weekend or Brokeback Mountain. To summarize briefly, two strangers meet, foster a romantic connection, then reality sets in and they go their separate ways. That’s what happens here, more or less.
The film is a meditation on love and circumstance. Ocho and Javi, our two lovebirds, have chemistry and a notable attraction, but Ocho has just ended a ten year relationship so he could be single and Javi is married with an adopted daughter (it’s an open marriage). You get the sense that Javi is only still with his husband out of history and habit and that Ocho isn’t finding single life as liberating as he thought. As a romantic, it’s hard not to root for them, but the realist in each of us knows the score.
But the third act has a twist. Suddenly, in a fit of surrealism, we are temporarily transported into an alternate reality -- one where Ocho and Javi are married and Javi’s adopted daughter is also Ocho’s. Its a fun cheat, a way to show the audience the happy ending without actually having to go through all the work to actually get there, but when it’s taken away we are left to make sense of it ourselves. My own interpretation is that, whether real or not, the alternate world represents Ocho’s unease with his own choices. He’s someone who will always wonder about the roads not taken, who will feel stuck when together and lonely when apart. The film ends on that note, Ocho alone in his kitchen in the late hours of the evening, the dream of another life swirling inside his head.

No one speaks for the first 12 minutes of End of the Century, the engaging opening relies solely on the capable and strong shoulders of Ocho, an Argentinian visiting Barcelona. Giving the unmistakable impression of a visitor absorbing his surroundings with a traveler’s fresh eyes, he wanders through the simple-yet-lovely establishing city shots as he cycles through common activities of the solo traveler: Eating alone, observing locals, reading, swimming, showering, jerking off. He notices an attractive man, Javi, at the beach. Later from the balcony of his Airbnb, he spots this same man in a KISS shirt, and calls out the film’s first line: “Kiss!” They devour each other immediately in the first of many passionate sex scenes. Drinking wine on the roof after a day out, they talk about past and current relationships (Javi is in an open marriage) and Ocho has an eerie feeling … wait … have they in fact met before, 20 years ago, at the end of the century?
The resulting flashbacks are a little disconcerting, because the two men do not look any different and do not behave all that differently. The only difference is they are heterosexual 20 years prior. Yet is it really plausible that Ocho could forget something like this?  In this second act, Ocho arrives to stay with Sonia, a classical singer he met through her ex-boyfriend and she has been dating young Javi at that moment. During his stay, Javi took Ocho to the museum. At that night, after drinking boxed wine followed by tequila and cigarettes, they make love for the first time — again.
The last act is set in a seemingly near future in which Ocho and Javi ensconced in domestic warmth, are the fathers of a little girl. Whether real or imagined, the film balances what is with what might have been and what could still be, and,  although the result is maybe a bit less substantial than the director intended, there is a certain literary elegance in the way he sketches it out.
6.5/10

Juan Barberini & Ramon Pujol in Fin de siglo/End of the Century (dir. Lucio Castro, 2019)
An Argentinian man from New York and a Spanish man from Berlin hook up by chance while in Barcelona. What seems like a one-night encounter between two strangers becomes an epic, decades-spanning relationship, which Lucio Castro depicts in a nonlinear fashion, and in which time and space refuse to play by the rules.
