#RamboDay : RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II, RAMBO III et RAMBO

Il semblerait que le 18 septembre a été déclaré “Rambo Day”, à la veille de la sortie en salle du nouveau film Rambo: Last Blood. Tout le monde s’entend (moi le premier) pour dire que le premier épisode de la série, First Blood, est le meilleur, le plus viscéral, le plus intense, avec beaucoup d’action pure, mais aussi une performance très sentie de Sylvester Stallone (également coscénariste). Un chef-d’oeuvre du genre, rien de moins, qui a récemment fait l’objet d’une restauration 4K qui a notamment été présentée à Cannes et à Fantasia.

Mais les suites valent quand même le détour à leur façon, et j’ai récemment pris plaisir à les revisiter. Brèves impressions sur chacun des trois épisodes qui séparent First Blood et Last Blood.

RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II (1985, George P. Cosmatos)

Réalisé par George P. Cosmatos d'après un scénario de Sylvester Stallone & James Cameron, ce 2e épisode n'a pas la gravitas de l'original. Mais comme Rocky IV (aussi lancé en 1985), c'est une suite ridiculement divertissante. J'adore la performance presque purement physique de Sly, qui déambule dans la jungle, s'infiltre dans un camp de POW, se fait torturer, etc. Ses quelques dialogues incluent le fameux "Do we get to win this time?" et la question de si Rambo est "expendable" (Stallone a de la suite dans les idées). Puis le crescendo d'action, rythmé par la musique enlevante de Jerry Goldsmith, atteint son apogée lors d'une orgie d'explosions et d'hélicoptères, comme une vulgarisation d'Apocalypse Now. Et ça finit avec une toune de Frank Stallone!

RAMBO III (1988, Peter MacDonald)

Exilé dans un monastère thaïlandais, Rambo retourne éventuellement au front pour secourir le Colonel des Russes en Afghanistan. La position politique de ce film est complexe, surtout avec le recul. Mais j'aime les images de Rambo à cheval à travers les superbes paysages désertiques et montagneux, et même s'il y a une certaine redite du 2 (infiltration, explosions, hélicoptères), ça fonctionne encore relativement. Et que dire de la mémorable scène où Rambo cautérise sa blessure avec de la poudre!

RAMBO (2008, Sylvester Stallone)

Revoir les suites de First Blood rapidement fait vraiment ressortir la formule, qui s'épuise : toujours Rambo qui s'infiltre en terrain ennemi pour sauver des prisonniers. Ce qui distingue cet épisode est la vue d'un Stallone vieillissant et cynique, ainsi que des scènes d'action particulièrement sanglantes. Mais je préfère l'esthétique 80s des premiers films à la réalisation frénétique de ce 4e film.
