Hi hello. I miss y'all. That is my own fault but it's still true, and I'm writing this on saturday night and feeling maudlin about how wonderful and talented and dear this fandom is and how I never join in anymore, so I'm making my little post okay.

I'm going with Musical Chairs again because it's so far past time for that to be done. And I've said this before, but it is approaching done. And I'm gonna get into that, but it'll all be behind the scenes rambling, so it's below the cut, and for those who don't want to delve that far, here is some freshly written Penny POV.

“Ah,” Shepard smiled, “a good deed wasn’t motive enough on its own?” “Not when it’s for a stupid reason.” “What is your un-stupid reason?” “Un-stupid?” Penny repeated. She turned resolutely to her drink. “Nevermind. I don’t want to talk to you anymore.” “Hey now,” Shepard said, ducking into her line of sight. “You struck me as someone who prefers being honest.” It was a job not to smile at that, but Penny put the work in.

Now for the mess.

It's a good mess I think. I have a new section in my miscellany document, tucked in between nine (9) sections of ramblings and cut scenes, and the new section is called "we got it this time boys," and I think it's right. I've written a full draft of the scene that's been holding us all back. It's there in its entirety, it just needs to be edited. And I'm so scared to reread it, because every time I think I got this scene right I come back and it's wrong. Which I've decided to be fine with, because so what!!! So what if I got 36k right and there's 5k that doesn't quite hit the way I want it to!!! The earth will keep spinning!!!

Anyway, "we got it this time boys" is 3 pages of what is technically kind of an outline for 5 pages of story, and every time I read the header it's in the voice of someone from some black-and-white hardboiled detective noir, which brings me the joy that might be the only reason I feel I've gotten it right in the first place. The outline is all written about as cohesively as it starts:

I think maybe, and gosh haven’t I said this a million times, I just need to stop trying to go that way. Stop trying to go any way. Like always “how do I get them to this moment” instead of “what would they do in this situation.” Unfortunately, the latter requires I connect with them on a level I’m not sure I can right now. But I guess let’s try. Actually let’s go for a walk, I can see the sun setting on the top of the house across the way and it’s lovely. Okay nice, it was lovely. Relaxing, refreshing. Saw a stump that looked like a beaver. Saw a cat. Thought of the opening to something I’m never going to write. So anyway,

It also sort of ends with:

Oh shit came up on an obstacle immediately. [Redacted]. This does not actually open the door for Baz to say something that can incite “[Redacted].” Fuck god okay whoops already going completely back on all I’ve decided and thinking maybe we could keep some of the new exchange I’d written, maybe he does reveal the ugh no stop I hate this. Just figure out a transition to bring in [...], what would Baz say to that other than what I’ve written him saying to that which doesn’t work for what I’m trying to do. I guess it could just be, like…he murmurs incorrigible. Or something. With a raised brow, a la baz. Sure let’s do that, however, I’ve laid down to do this and learned I’m actually quite sleepy, so let’s do it another time. Hopefully I don’t come up on another immediate problem and despair. Just remember not to start combining things and rereading things yet, okay. Please.

This would be alarming if I hadn't already gotten past this point and written the thing. So I'm going to go into editing it with the mindset that nothing substantial shall change and boohoo to me if I want it to, and once that's done we're pretty much home free.

hmm. good question uhhh XD k here we go uh.

i dont usually like to talk about ships i DONT like because i dont wanna ruin anyone elses experience- its just unnecessary and unless somone asks me specifically i wouldnt share.

can you tell im very enthusiastic about shipping and character dynamics? 🥺👉👈

now codegold and Jenvy and fullcompany or Luzi or Vhad even are all crackships, hell even Jessa is almost in the crackship area because some of the characters involved are either not fully developed or did not have any significant screentime and its up to the fan/consumer/writer to make their own assumptions and character developments.

i vibe with almost... most crackships? lol, because the fact that they are between characters who have very little canonical and/or meaningful interactions, therefore as a writer i get to think and develop my own interactions where... things yknow... "DEVELOP" XD like how some ppl take backgeound characters from mlp and give them and entire lore and backstory XD

like J and Tessa and even Thad who were very one dimensional and barely there. we cant even talk about J cuz liam straight up assasinated her entire poor fucking character. she has no rhyme or reason or purpose for doing any of the things she did thats why its not easy to like her for the sake of liking her.

meanwhile everyone likes villains like azula, idk catra, bill cypher, invader zim- not necessarily cuz they "have backstories" but because they made SENSE in their respective settings and what people KNEW of them. J.... J makes no sense 😭 Liam essentially didnt give us anything on her for us to connect any dots about her- especially not after somewhat hyping the character up to be AS important as the other cast but then she was just... literally tossed in the scrap dump of the planet. also Thad and a bit of Lizzy and Doll- ive been trying to develop them for a few weeks now for my MD re-writing plans and it has been HARDDD they make no sense in a setting where everything is just for gags and jokes.

but i digress- what i mean to say is- i like crackships cuz i get to MAKE the characters as i enjoy them >:"3 i love writing and doing character studies!

this all being said... i dont blame people for disliking a ship. for some reason shipping characters from shows fucking takes away years of your life- esp when you see one you dislike and your brain cant even bring a goddamn reason for why you hate the ship in the first place- so i genuinely advise people who dislike a ship to just avoid it- breathe XD maybe block the tags- dont interact so the algorythm doesnt try to bother you- tell your friends to not talk about it with you maybe- and overall internet hygiene- you dont need to try and convince yourself to like it unless you want to- but dont bother others about it.

and with all this being said now the ships "I" personally dislike are...

Vizzy, Noll, and Khori....

.....yep.

i wont elaborate on WHY i dislike them so much to the point that i had to unfollow some people just to maintain my sanity, but the thing is sometimes brain isnt convinced with "logic" so big whoop 🤷‍♀️ such is life. hope people who enjoy them have fun tho<3

I write pretty much exclusively for Dead Boy Detectives, but I have a oneshot for Marvel from 2017, and an unfinished AU for Critical Role that I'll probably never go back to

5. Do you respond to comments?

I do when I have the time and energy. All my free time is kind of eaten up by writing the fics themselves, so unless the comment is really long or really funny, I usually don't respond. But I appreciate every comment just the same, they are what keep me motivated to write

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I honestly don't really do fics with angsty endings? Because all of my fics are super angsty in general, so I like to end things on a positive note. I guess the closest would be The Case of the Selkie's Skin because there's not really any closure there, they just move onto the next case. But even that one still has a cathartic ending.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

foolish flame for sure. A lot of my fic endings tend to be bittersweet in some way, but this one was a pure fluffy ending

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Nah. I don't think I've been regularly posting fics long enough for that.

9. Do you write smut?

I have written smut exactly once, and while it was a really cathartic/rewarding experience, I don't know if I'll ever do it again. It's a little too far out of my comfort zone.

10. Do you write crossovers?

No, crossovers aren't really my thing, though I have toyed with the idea of writing a dead boy detectives/pushing daises crossover just for the hell of it. But it probably won't ever make it onto paper.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of

Nope

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, and the idea of it kinda scares me lol

14. What's your all time favorite ship?

Literally changes day to day. I think kirk/spock is the one that will truly own my heart forever, but payneland really is the perfect ship for me (hence all the fanfiction)

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

The Case of Eros's Arrow, which is sitting with 4 chapters on AO3. I still like the concept of it, and my OCs in it, but my writing has changed so much since I started it and I just don't really feel connected to the work itself anymore. Which is a shame, because I left my readers on a total cliffhanger. Whoops.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I do alright with descriptive prose (or I enjoy writing it, at the very least). I'm also good at worldbuilding and coming up with fun/creative plots.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Transitions between scenes, and general construction of dialogue (though I've gotten better at dialogue over recent months). I can also get a little ramble-y when it comes to introspection, though I'm usually pretty good about cutting it all down by the time the final draft is done.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I don't have many thoughts on it. I only speak english, and the only language I've ever used in my fics besides english is Latin (for magic purposes).

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Supernatural, I think? It was OC fanfiction, I still have it floating around this blog somewhere

20. Favorite fics you've written?

dye it all, rosary I think is my favorite right now. I don't know what the fuck I was on when I wrote that fic, but I wrote chapter 1 in one sitting, and then chapter 2 over the course of a few months. It turned out so much better than I ever could have hoped, and I just truly love it so much.

I also love my healing needed more than time because it has all the stuff that I love in it (magic, lesbians, dogs, kids, and other fun stuff to come). I'm also just really proud that I've managed to stick with it as long as I have; it's the first piece of writing over 14k that I've ever written in my life.

New Pinned Welcome!

Hey there, folks! This is Eruanna, and welcome to my blog! My activity on here is... sporadic, to say the least (meaning I'll forget about it for weeks, then have a burst of posts I saved in my drafts for ages, lol). However, you're welcome to look around anyway!

I'm also a creative type (in... several areas, probably too many, whoops), so here's a bit of a guide to what I do:

I write! You can find me on AO3, or here on my blog (#my writing, #my fanfiction, and #my stories are all available to search through my tags, but #salt and light will probably include everything). I also talk about my stories a good bit, just sort of rambling, so you'll probably find that there too.

I draw! Pretty sure it's #my art and #notebook sketch for tags (and #salt and light). It's a mix of exactly two things: fanart and random stuff I sketched up for my own stories.

I even make music! There's not much out there yet, but I have a few demos floating around. They're in the #my music tag.

Obviously, I reblog things, because this is the reblogging site XD Sometimes I make lengthy comments, and sometimes I just add a quick react and some tags, but yeah. I reblog stuff.

I also have (a million) sideblogs, so maybe check those out? @long-live-the-gobop is my technically main blog, because I made it first, but it's specifically an AIO fan blog. I also have @saved-for-me-own-stories (other stuff related to my writing), @marching-tall-through-it-all (Tangled/TTS stuff), @the-gifts-he-has-given-me (art stuff, mostly tips but a few art posts as well), @new-tag-oc (reblogging from the deactivated ones), @tpc-tangled-au (my Tangled AU featuring all my characters), and @less-lost-than-you-realize (my OTGW sideblog).

Yeah. And that's not even a third of them.

Well, I suppose that about sums it up for types of content! Oh, and just a reminder, you'll also see quite a bit of the tag #salt and light on here, because I'm both very much a Christian and very much a creator of content that flows from that.

And, because I'm a Christian, I decided it would be best to tell you where I stand from the Bible itself, so it's clear that this doesn't come from me alone but from God:

I'm rooted in what God tells us, about Himself and the world He made. Thus - regardless of what the world says God is or what the world says people are (or aren't) - I'm not going to move. This is where I stand.

As I said in my previous pinned, I'm not here to cause trouble. I'm not an argumentative person by nature, and I'm not going to try and provoke things or send people hate asks or anything. Even if they think I'm a psycho for believing the things I believe.

If that's you, just know I'll be praying for you.

And, regardless of whether you agree with me or not, I hope you find something to enjoy on this here blog o' mine! I'm just here to spread a little salt on the stories we devour and light on the shadows of this world. :)

Posting this 2 months late because I forgor 💀 but! My favorite drawing I did for artfight this year (also my favorite drawing I've made so far in general)

This ons is the creator by @kiskutnya (sry for tagging you in a drawing youve already seen 2 months later whoops)

More details under the cut because I <3 rambling

So big reason I decided to draw the creator is because I knew I could have a lot of fun with the drawing and that is what I did! Starting here with the background,

The borders are kinda hard to see but it is made up of 6 different panels of galaxies that I drew. Can you tell I like drawing galaxies

Unfiltered lineart and colors for the bit in a the top right. I wanted this bit to look wonky so I drew it with my left hand which was not very fun for coloring but we ball (though I did shade the hair much simpler than on the main drawing because I did not wanna try that shit with my left hand lmao)

Also for all the hands in the image, I mostly wanted some kind of repeated element like a body part, and I decided to go with hands because I usually associate the act of creation with hands. The brightly colored hands are just edited photos of my own hands because I thought it would look neat

Then there's just drawing stuff, because drawing is a type of creation and again I thought it would look cool. Also drawing a very big eye is fun

Aaand lastly the veins. I was originally going to draw a nervous system but then I realized that that was a bit too complicated for me in the moment so I went with veins instead since for this piece they work similarly

Anyways yeah this was probably the most fun I've had with a drawing to date and I think overall artfight this year but especially working on this piece has really motivated me to do more art again. Excited for next year!

6. How would the player go about meeting them in Act 1? What is their introduction?

Ohh probably the ruins where you can find Withers, arguing with the people there. "Let me in or I'll cut you." Being the first thing you hear probably. When you walk in on it she'll probably point her weapon at you, biggest scowl on her face. Though you can quickly tell by her demeanor she's more scared than actually a threat (at the moment.) You can choose to either talk her down, encourage the attack, or attack her. The first two options can actually lead into her recruitment.

7. Describe their arc. How would a player help resolve it? What choices can be made? Can your Tav be turned down a dark path, or pulled to a lighter one?

Sigrid's main arc would definitely be whether she becomes an Unholy Assassin of Bhaal or not. She is generally more inclined towards doing it if you don't intervene, because if left to just her own instincts it's.. "Kill, kill, kill again" quite literally.

But she can be pretty easily persuaded into a path of light, especially if you have high approval.

I think helping would mostly involve intervening (quite literally) when she wants to submit to the urge. Like you could stop her from killing Alfira, stop her from sharing the Grove's location with Minthara (she'll try to regardless if the player does or not.)

8. After Act 3, what does their life look like? What are they talking about at the reunion party?

Post-game she would probably just live in Baldur's Gate, helping rebuild. She'll talk of the possibility of moving elsewhere, because the city has so many negative memories for her.

She does have a job as a writer now! She tries to write true crime books which get.. reviews on being eerily realistic with some gory details.

11. What is your Tav’s go-to comfort food?

Oh beef steak definitely! She likes the texture and taste combo, feel like she'd love to eat that.

12. Does your Tav have any tattoos or scars? Why?

Yep! She has one right across her face, and her neck. Both self-inflicted, in a show of worship to Bhaal when she was just getting initiated you know. She has a tattoo that's just a stripe from the edge of her lower lip to her chin.. because she thought it looked cool when she was like twenty.

13. What is your Tav’s main color palette? Why do they choose those colors?

BROWNS AND BLACKS!!! SHE LIKES THE NEUTRALITY!!! IT DOESNT HURT HER EYES!!!

16. What do they do for fun, when not adventuring? What are their hobbies?

Sigrid is pretty fond of learning how to read! Because of her lobotomy (thanks orin) she has to relearn how to do this and she actually practices a lot with Karlach and Gale. I kind of rambled about this in my other post in my tags- but this is based on dialogue you can have with Karlach about reading together. Since she has to relearn I imagine reading with Karlach and sometimes Gale helps her and genuinely entertains her.

18. Where/with whom do they feel safest?

Karlach!! Unsurprisingly. But Karlach is truly the only person who she can.. confide in, be quiet and stay in spot, never worry about saying the wrong thing. (Not that she can't say anything wrong, but she's less stressed about it with Karlach.)

20. What is their relationship to touch? Do they shy away from it? Do they need it to feel present?

complicated. From some people she craves it, she kind of wants it every day at the very least, to feel something, to feel real. (i.e. Karlach, Wyll, Shadowheart.) But with most others she'll snap if she's touched without a go-ahead or warning. (Snap as in get annoyed.)

21. Describe a defining moment from their past, which makes them who they are today!

Hmmm this sweet moment she had with Orin when they were both kids in the Bhaal temple where she braided her hair. They talked normally about things for a moment, about things they like. (In their weird, bhaalspawn ways maybe.) Both had an affinity to art, Orin was the painter whereas Sigrid was the storyteller. It was a connection of creativity and care, and through it she puts a lot of value in art and hair

24. What does your Tav consider to be their own biggest character flaw?

Incompetency. She feels she's incompetent at.. a lot. (Emotional intimacy, sexual intimacy, battle, writing, reading, music- practically everything. Except for killing. She's good at that in her eyes.) Though she rarely shows this insecurity.

25. What is something they would die on a hill over?

HMMMMMM. Even through the negative associations she has with BG, she'd defend that damn city from any negative reputation with her life.

27. What is the worst thing they’ve ever done/said to someone they love?

Ohhh. Hm. Well there's this line from a wip i'm not even remotely done to finishing where she tells Karlach, during one of her.. lets say Dark Urge moments where she practically tells Karlach "I'd kill you just to send you back to the Hells, Hell-dog." Karlach would argue that's not really 'Sigrid' though, it is, but it also isn't. Sig apologizes profusely the next morning, its definitely the one of the things she regrets saying most or even thinking. The Urge is nasty, and its the blight of her existence until its gone.

30. What does your Tav want more than anything?

Freedom, peace. The sense that when she wakes up and makes a decision it's hers and no one else's.

okay so! as a heads up i have already Experienced p5r so these r not initial thoughts necessarily. but i still want to rant about my favoritest kids <3 this got long so i'm putting it below the cut whoops ladkjf

ryuji! i fucking love ryuji man. i think a lot of people write him off as just the goofy sidekick character but he is SO much more to me. a lot of ryuji's trauma gets so overlooked due to the fact of him largely being comic relief, but like. that kid has gone through SO much!!!! between his father and kamoshida and his peers like. he is SO strong. i love his characterization of "people are treating me like a punk, i may as well act like it" bc it's not even him necessarily playing a role he isn't. he is a punk! he's disruptive and counter-cultural and has issues with authority. and that's punk, but also like, those are the parts of punk that society sees and demonizes. ryuji is punk not just because of that, but because he cares about others before all else and stands up for what's right no matter what, even if it means being punished for it, because he has a super strong sense of justice and is super protective over those he loves!! i feel like a lot of ryuji's character gets kind of. skipped over by a large majority of players. because his actions and presentation is very specific to fighting against japanese culture, meaning it gets lost in translation unless you're aware of japanese culture and norms. i love this boy so much <3

i have. a lot of thoughts on ann. largely her meta-treatment by the writers as opposed to her in-game self. you can find some ramblings if u scroll down my p5lb tag, bc i have. a Lot of thoughts on that aspect of her. on a lighter note, though, i fucking love ann. i think she also kind of falls into the mischaracterization of being ditzy at times. not as badly as ryuji, but ann is a very open character. she's extremely compassionate and wants to help everyone she possibly can, even at her own detriment at times, but as we're shown this sometimes leads her to being used by others. which i think leads to people making her just. overly trusting to a blind degree. or stupid. but ann is super smart! she immediately clocked that the painting was yusuke's, not madarame's, and is shown time and time again to be able to understand others' true feelings, even if they're trying to keep them hidden. i really like how she's blunt and honest, even if it comes off as harsh or insensitive. she speaks her mind! she's not going to hesitate and risk not being heard to understood! i really love that for her

i haven't gotten him yet BUT i am on madarame so. i will sneak in yusuke. because i love him. he is truly one of the characters ever. obviously he is one of The most autistic-coded characters in the game (alongside futaba). which is detrimental to an extent. bc people often just fully mischaracterize him due to his eccentricity. for me i just really love how unapologetic he is with it. that kid has never heard of masking in his life (/pos). he's one of the characters i feel for the most because like. god. he had his whole fucking world twisted. haru and makoto had similar experiences of people they'd known all their lives becoming corrupt, but like. haru's dad wasn't always like that. and neither was makoto's sister. they HAD good intentions. madarame never did. he's the closest to mirroring akechi in that sense, except akechi knew all along. yusuke didn't have that privilege. that sense of revenge. i think his story is so delicate and difficult because how do you even go about knowing your entire life was a lie? and not even in a way you can step away from. art was still his world. it's not just something he did for madarame. the knowledge of carrying that burden. of those memories that shaped you being corrupted in such a way.

morgana is there. i guess. wish he wasn't.

So this got too long for the tags, and then I rambled into text-to-speech for a half hour drive to produce 15(!) pages of barely coherent notes app transcription, then I started writing this out longhand in a full size-notebook, and 6 pages and a hand cramp later started transcribing to notepad, and then dumped 2500 words into a Google Doc to get it to my phone, and now here we are.

Whoops.

Anyway.

MariChat. Always MariChat. I'm extremely fond of particular scenarios involving the other sides, but I'm always more excited for anything MariChat in general. For example- the way LadyNoir haunts the narrative of any post-canon no-reveal reunion stuff, even when it's the last side to actually be shown? Exquisite, even in briefer or simpler executions than Bakery Enemies AU.

But MariChat has my love for three primary reasons:

1) Most interesting interactions with least amount of required suspension of disbelief

2) Simultaneously the most honest and dishonest side

3) As a result of 1 & 2, intoxicating amounts of a specific kind of dramatic irony.

Absurdly long breakdown under the cut.

As a foreword note, I know OP asked to avoid talking about why your fave is better, but comparisons are necessary for explanation. I don't intend anything below to be disparaging. All sides of the love square have their charms, but MariChat just excels in the particular aspects I appreciate most.

For 1, note that there are two axes here- antics vs feasibility. MariChat combines the two most chaotic faces, incentivizes them to be stupider at each other, and does so in a way that requires the least set up for the widest array of results.

Adrien is free to be as dumb a catboy as he likes, or to dramatically play up the hero angle. He craves Marinette's attention, and has no reason to hold back once he knows she's seen through the posturing. Mari has no urge to impress this idiot, or reason to play team leader/guardian. It's just Chat, and she's off the clock. She'll play the clueless normal girl card until he catches on, but after that she's free to be as weird and passionate as she wants. Weirder even, if she's trying to hide a Kwami or a dozen.

And if this is a balcony scene based relationship? Out of the public eye, at night, in her own space? All bets off.

I think the balcony stuff is so popular because the set up is so so easy. Why is Mari on her balcony? It's her bedroom! She's got plants and a comfy chair up there! Why is Chat there? Adrien is escaping for a bit. Why talk to a random girl as Chat Noir? Well, they know each other, of course. And that works for other situations as well. Why is he giving her extra attention during an Akuma attack? She's in the middle of it somehow and he knows she can handle herself. Why risk being seen together in public? Well, butterfly bastard has already targeted her several times, she's friends with the ladyblogger, and he's seen her willingly dodge crazy fans. If she's okay with it, he's fine with it.

Contrast Ladrien. Why is LB sneaking into his closed room? Why would either of them risk being associated? How/when is Bunnix going to bail them out of endgame "Gabe was momentarily an attentive parent" scenarios? How relaxed can either of them really manage to be with the object of their affection, who they have no casual dynamic with while using these faces? How convoluted does the scenario need to be to overcome these issues? (Note that if you enjoy this kind of awkward dancing around and ice-breaking, that's a different matter.)

On the other axis, how much can Adrienette get up to? They're teenagers. Teens with big secrets, but not with secrets that (they're aware) directly relate. The identity drama and anonymity based dynamics are absent, so pure Adrienette is a high school sitcom/drama.

LadyNoir allows for most of the same rooftop privacy considerations, but at the same time limits how casually open they can be about their private lives. They're both transformed as superheroes, but that also means that they're both also, always, the heroes of Paris. They fight and die together to carry the weight of the city, they're the most important people in each other's lives, but they're also coworkers in a job they can't fuck up.

This rolls right into item 2. LadyNoir is the most honestly un-honest side, at least on the interpersonal front. They both have entire secret lives, but they both also know this! The secrets are not secret. The bounds are known, even if they sometimes get pushed. LB and CN both know their partner is deliberately hiding their personal life, if not occasionally lying outright in order to misdirect. The depth of the dynamic arises from how critical their connection is, while at the same time being so very shallow.

In contrast, MariChat is wide open as far as either of them knows. Chat is some random boy entirely disconnected from the rest of Marinette's life. Why shouldn't she show him her hobbies and her family and use him as a sounding board for issues with her friends? Mari is a girl that Adrien knows to be discreet, and he trusts her advice. She's largely outside of miraculous drama, but with enough experience to have context. He knows she's not judgmental, but even if he does something wrong and messes up, he can't lose her entirely. If he stops visiting as Chat, he can still see her as Adrien.

And she's just a normal girl! He's just her Chaton! She doesn't have anything to hide from him! He's wearing a mask, but what does the boy under the cat ears have to do with her?

Except. Well. She's Ladybug. He's in love with her, or pretends to be, but whatever else, no one in the world is as close or familiar with who she is in spots. If she knows things she shouldn't about Miraculous or Akuma battles, or says something that she's said to her partner as his partner, then the world will literally end.

And he's not just Chat Noir visiting a random girl. He's Adrien Agreste, her classmate and friend, who pays closer attention to her than even he realizes. He's enough of a closed book as Adrien that he can be surprisingly open- if vague- about his private life while he's Chat Noir, but he knows so much more about Mari's day-to-day than he has any way of explaining. If he says the wrong thing, or reacts the wrong way, he has very few justifications to give.

I don't buy into the true selves stuff. They're the same kids in and out of the masks, but context determines what parts of themselves they showcase and what parts they suppress. I think that the MariChat dynamic shows the most relaxed and comprehensive versions of them both. Marinette gets to be more Marinette around Chat Noir than she gets to be around Adrien, and Chat Noir gets to be more Adrien than he can be to Ladybug, and more Chat than Adrien can be to Mari. And in many ways Marinette gets to be more Ladybug in front of Chat Noir than she can in front of Adrien. Chat Noir knows she can face down an Akuma without a Miraculous, and that she's absurdly talented with one. [Side note: CatMouse is also an extension of MariChat, so] Chat Noir gets to see confident, casual Marinette, while Adrien only catches glimpses. Chat Noir knows that she's willing to argue with him and treat him as neither a statue on a pedestal or delicate crystal.

But at the same time they're both constantly, actively, intentionally engaging in deception, to hide secrets that are actually secret! So tasty.

This brings us to item 3: Dramatic Irony.

Dramatic irony is, of course, the secret sauce that makes Miraculous so damn addicting. It's the source of tension in all the identity shenanigans, the supports propping up the corners of the lovesquare, and the bomb wrapped in a bow in the middle of the overarching plot.

As the audience, we have all the pieces that no single character possesses. Nobody knows that Marinette has a crush on the boy under the cat ears. Nobody knows that Adrien is both Chat Noir and Hawk Moth's son. Nobody knows that Chat Noir is a Senti. (Except Tikki, but she's not sharing.)

And all of these secrets are so tightly interconnected that knowing only some of them can cause more drama than knowing them all. In the best moments of the show and the best kinds of fan works, characters make perfectly reasonable (or at least understandable) choices based on what they know, and those are still the wrong choices! They play perfectly, but can still lose. A casual, harmless remark can undo the world, because it's made to someone who knows more than they should, or who has just the right pieces of the puzzle to suddenly snap everything together into a dangerously wrong picture.

And MariChat dances on those knife edges even in the silliest moments.

There are so many things that Marinette would never tell Adrien, but who is Chat going to tell? She'll dance around the name because she's embarrassed (and the plot would end too early), but it's not like he knows everyone at her school anyway. And Chat Noir can admit things to Mari that he'd never tell Ladybug, because he's trying to keep up appearances, or he doesn't want to hurt her, or he thinks she's overwhelmed and needs to be supported and not asked to provide support, or he thinks she already knows. It's fine! Marinette and LB don't talk, and Mari would never betray his trust like that. And some things stay between superhero partners, and LB would definitely never spill. So Marinette is safe.

Except. Well. She's Ladybug. He may not be managing to communicate how he's doing to LB, and she may be too blinded by her own assumptions to figure it out, but he'll spell things out in detail to Marinette. And Marinette can't speak for LB to reassure him, but now LB can't act on it either.

And Marinette and her stray catboy may be increasingly close, but Marinette and Adrien are as distant as ever. Or is she drawing away, no longer so desperate for that particular blond?

Or Marinette and Adrien may be closer than ever. They're friends, real friends, closer than friends. But why does she still seem closer to Chat. What is he doing wrong as Adrien?

And while Chat doesn't know why bakery girl is so automatically comfortable with the leather-clad superhero, Marinette has no way of knowing how much of his behavior is actually specific to her, with or without the mask. Adrien doesn't even know for the longest time. If Chat is goofy and touch obsessed and occasionally startlingly sweet or romantic with both girls she's seen him in private with, how much of it means anything?

And later, as things get really knotted up, and Marinette has all of the pieces except the most important one but can't let anyone know that Marinette has any idea there's even a puzzle, while LB thinks that Chat Noir is actually in the dark about everything and doesn't have a personal stake anyway:

How is Chat supposed to know what Marinette knows about what he is and isn't supposed to know? If he admits he's used the snake then the whole house of cards topples, but what if he admits to smaller things, like knowing other identities? What if he's a bit too familiar with the Agreste situation, in a way that might be expected of LB's partner from the outside, but which LB knows he shouldn't be? What if he says something about what happened to him during the final fight, expecting Marinette to have no way of knowing about Adrien's circumstances?

How dramatically can an avatar of destruction unravel, if nobody knows there were threads to catch?

Anyway. I'm going on too long.

The real key to picking a favorite side of the love square is that you're doing it in comparison to the other sides. That's easy if you're a salty hater, but if you like the whole polygon (and all the other dimensions that continue to emerge) then you've got to weigh the merits.

So in brief:

LadyNoir is really fun. You've got the superhero partner thing, there's a beautiful kind of bounded honesty. They know there are things they can't talk about, they're on the same page, but within that they can talk about whatever. They get to the real deep life-or-death kind of stuff, because that's the reality of their situation, but there's not the same kind of irony. There's no "okay, I've gotta actively mislead because I don't want to say something I shouldn't know about", they're just superheroes. They know each other as deeply as possible in these faces, and they don't have any reason to suspect they know each other in other faces. So they get on with it, and they can get zany, you've got the mask stuff, but there's not anything so casual as there is in Marinette's bedroom, in that kind of vulnerable private space.

Ladrien is really the inverse execution of the honest dishonesty thing MariChat has. For me, the key to really good Ladrien is vulnerable Ladybug, right? But they're both at peak awkwardness here, which is really the painful part. Adrien's really trying to put himself out there and be honest, to make a connection, but he's also got to be quiet. He can't be Chat Noir. He's got to be vulnerable. And Ladybug is either trying to be vulnerable or she's trying to look strong and confident, but she can't get too personal because if she gets too personal Marinette peeks out. And if Ladybug gets too personal with this model boy she has no reason to be so open with, it comes across as a betrayal of Chat, which is always awkward.

Adrienette is good, really. It's cute, and it’s relatively straightforward. For the most part it ends up as a foil to the other relationships though, you know? Or it's just a school romance, which has its own charms. It just doesn't hit quite the same way as other sides of the square, because while it's a keystone part of Marinette/Ladybug + Adrien/Chat Noir, in isolation it avoids most of what makes Miraculous uniquely engaging. I've really deeply enjoyed some purely Adrienette works that never include a transformation or a Kwami, but the very best of those are very dependent on how Chat Noir is part of what Ladybug is, and Ladybug is part of what Chat Noir is, and how Ladybug is central to who Marinette is and Chat Noir is central to who Adrien is. Even in no Miraculous AUs, where Ladybug and Chat Noir aren't superhero alter egos, they're still key parts of characterization.

Hi perce! I have been following your account for a while, and I LOVE your blog. Its literally even given me inspiration to try and start my own, but I literally have no idea how to start! I already have my rules, masterlist, and abt me ready.. just no drafts. I want to have a couple before I post just to make sure I have content ready.. but I literally have no idea where to start, my brain just BLANKS.

I love your fics, so could you give me some tips?

hi!!! first of all, thank you! i'm glad you enjoy my posts and it means a lot to inspire you?? like that was how i started here, being inspired and encouraged by a writer i love, so it's like a little full circle moment to me :')

secondly, don't feel like you have to have content ready at all possible moments!! i struggle with it a lot, but it's important to remember that you are doing this for fun/as a hobby and having the mindset that you have to constantly churn out writing can make it so you start to dread it. there's no pressure to post consistently or even have a schedule. post when you want. write when you want.

i'm going to put the rest under the cut because i tend to ramble a lot whoops

in terms of ideas, a lot of times i just write whatever comes to me. most of my drabbles are written in the moment because i'm not necessarily trying to think of ideas. which can be nice because then i'm not forcing things, but it's bad because then i'm not working on the things i wanted to write.

BUT! tumblr is FULL of inspiration and ideas! sometimes i'll search for writing prompts (i usually go for dialogue ones as opposed to scenarios but that's just me), and see what jumps out at me. there's some blogs that are dedicated to prompts or aus and those can be helpful to look at! even if you don't use one of the prompts, you can get inspired by it and go your own route.

my first writing here was a continuation/exploration of an idea i sent as an anon, so i had an easy thing to focus on. some people don't like their ideas being expounded upon, so if you want to do that, always ask the person first. (i personally don't mind if people get inspiration from my posts or ideas, i love seeing different takes and styles !!)

sometimes i also surround myself with the content i want to write. like, i mostly write nsfw because that's what interests me and i feel like i can focus on actions rather than feelings. it fits my writing style a lot better in my opinion. so i follow blogs that post the same stuff. you can get inspired by it, just because your brain is in that space. i'll see a post and my brain will be like "what if it was this character but also we change the situation and actually the dynamics are different now too" and all the sudden, i have a completely separate idea.

i'm not sure how familiar you are with tumblr itself, so i'll give a few pointers that are helpful to know!

when you make a new blog (sideblog or main), your first posts will most likely not show up for a bit in tags. this is mostly to make sure you're not spamming and whatnot but sometimes it helps to reblog some posts first and wait a few days until tumblr actually registers you as a blog! so i highly recommend setting up your blog and reblogging some things before posting your writing.

aaaand reblogging is a GREAT way to make mutuals/friends! for me, i always notice the people who reblog/leave tags on my writing and i'm a lot more likely to look at their blog if i recognize their name. reblogging is what keeps the community alive, too. it's really weird (in my opinion) to see a blog that only posts their content and never reblog anyone else's work. writing is very much a community and that means supporting each other.

I'm the kinda guy that doesn't shut up so I'm gonna answer as many of these as I can, I'll leave them under a read-more though haha

I don't think I can really answer how many fics I've done this year because I've lost track of both my WIPs and how much I've finished since there's still a lot I posted on my tumblr that hasn't been updated onto my AO3 (and especially with The Ramble Room)... I can at the very least guarantee that I'm still working on stuff so stay tuned for that hahahah

2. First-person perspective, proper. Was for a couple snippets earlier in the year but thought I'd give that a go at least. Also finally wrote SoMa lesbians (not the werewolf ones tho whoops)

3. I mean obviously Soul Eater is where a lot of my brain is because variants, but I get a lot of inspiration from a lot of different horror games. You can mainly see that in my art because I keep writing about insomnia instead

4. [dial-up noises as I try to remember how many AUs I did this year] I haven't actually written anything for my The Edge of Sleep AU, but it did happen to multiple drawings, so that probably counts for something

5. TBH some of you are probably already aware I really only care about ships that involve Soul just because of exploring character dynamics with him (and that's usually not really traditionally romantic), Maka just happens to have the most grabbable chemistry. Biggest reason why I haven't done more Crona x Soul haha I will say that I have ended up paying more attention to Spirit/Stein just because they come across my eyeballs a decent amount.

6. re: Spirit/Stein, Stein has a fun aesthetic. I think I've dipped into drawing characters that aren't Soul a little more this year haha (skater void really kicked off, wow)

7. Kinda reiterating above, but I did write CroMa and CroSo during the ship week event! I think there was also a Stein and Spirit snippet I wrote at some point, although that may not be inherently "shippy"...

8. Alright I'm gonna actually look through my ao3 list hahaha... wow okay, there's a lot from this year even without the scattered stuff on my tumblr haha Happiest to work on? Well I can say the 4/20 fic was definitely extremely funny to work on haha, so that has to count for something (especially with the silly tags and art haha)

9. Most satisfying to work on... Well the reverse vampire fic "And all that counts is here and now" took a lot of energy, it was a big fic! So I was very fulfilled when I finally finished it. I'd say it turned out pretty well, hm.

10. Oh oops, I've gone out of order haha (processing issues strike again). For question 8: What fic meant the most to write... hm. I really live for writing all of my fics, but I guess I can say "Today Is Special" was really stepping outside my norm (surrealism aside haha) by writing about characters I don't usually think about too much. This one also took a lot of work, but it is indeed rather special with the way it all strung together haha

11. Most difficult to write... Probably the previous one given it was with different characters haha, but so I don't repeat any answers... "One Shot" is relevant because I started it... two years ago? And finally came back and finished it. It's hard having so many WIPs because I want to eventually finish all of them, so it's a testament that this can be done, just at my own pace. The biggest struggle I'd say was my writing style changing but it was fun to adapt to that hah

12. Easiest to write? Probably all the snippets because they're so short lmao I guess for this answer I will say "how the Devil was made" was unique in that it spanned over several writing sprints even as I was sleep deprived, so it was something that was kind've done in a day. I suppose to that effect the Thanksgiving work also applies considering I wrote it in like a couple hours at most hahaha Did you know my record for fastest snippet is 15 minutes?

13. I'll just stick to what's on my AO3 because the tumblr stuff is a mess. Shortest: "My chest's a bird's nest and it's filled with feathers of you" (642 words) Longest: the fic under answer 9 (9,800 words), but for added trivia the one below that is "I'm falling down into my shadow" (7,986 words) look I'm having fun answering different fics for different questions

14. Oh I don't really listen to music when I write or draw, stuff just kinda plays through my head. Some fics have songs associated with them when I make them though, so spot them if you can haha

15. There's a lot of times the title ends up coming first or really close to the start of writing a fic. Sometimes, not so much. "Between Two Points" title was very much last second, and only because I was grasping at a song in my brain's playlist. I actually remember at one point not being able to think of a title/summary for a fic to the point I had it sitting completed in my drafts for over a day, but I can't recall if that was even this year hahah

16. Ooh, favourite title, that's a toughie... Not quite the same, but "Purgatory Maybe" has probably the funniest chapter titles to me. My series "The Wolf" has names and summaries that I really enjoyed as well, honestly.

17. Favourite opening line? Killing me with these hahaha Alright I don't think I've brought "What a beautiful wedding" in yet, so I'll say the opening to that is pretty fun:

His fingers brush lightly against his canvas, careful brush strokes painting a scene of darks to draw out that earthy shade of green, like a beacon shining brilliantly through the storm just waiting to begin as it rolls in over the sea to land. …Or something along those lines. He's doing his best to really bring out the colour of her eyes, is what he's saying.

18. And favourite ending? Dang hahaha Alright, wild card, if you get this you win I guess lmaoo

Some would even say Maka is so good at ordering him around that Soul was far too preoccupied with obliging to remember to flip the little demon off on its way out.

19. Man, if only I could share Resbang stuff haha What fics haven't I answered with yet... "Sorry for Party Rockin'" has some pretty fun interactions hah

"Sorry, lady," a dark voice growls from her throat, "need to borrow this for a minute. No time for answers." What are you- With a laugh that isn't hers and a few pops of her neck loosening up under what was her hands, Maka doesn't even get the chance to interrupt her interrupter as she feels her arms now moving around like a puppet show and turning off the bathroom light completely. Hey— "At least I'm saving your power bill."

20. Funniest line, might as well two-for-one it haha

"I'm never asking you for directions again."

21. It's not really surprising if something surprises me or changes the entirety of a fic considering I don't write with outlines and will usually just write the first thing that comes to mind (which is how you get gems like Soul's Hornkler moment). It's also something I like about writing linearly (although I would like to try writing a story out of order someday, not to be confused with writing a non-linear story linearly haha), is that one small action can effect the rest of scenes. First one I can think of is fic from answer 15, where one interaction between Little Oni and Soul led to it being an ongoing thing, and ultimately added the whole scene at the end haha

22. While I have actually written traditionally before (wrote in a notebook and then typed it up on PC), it very much does not play well with my brain's difficulties with processing words, and the fics written during that phase are some of my least favourite. I've jumped from quite a few things though. Google Docs on both pc and mobile, libre office, notepad, Discord. I write pretty much only on Discord now hahaha Kind've a general answer and not just for this year, but technically I did have one fic where I wrote each part in a different text editor so hahaha

23. Most satisfying writing moment? How can you have me just pick one haha Well I've already said finishing up that big fic was really satisfying, so... hm. Here, I'll answer with the first fic I have listed for this year, "I am Maka's Monster". There's a lot I love on how this came together, so I can say I am very satisfied with the way this idea was brought to life. Also the last tag is still funny.

24. Oh huh, doing something special to celebrate finishing a fic... That's a real interesting one. I'm not sure I've ever thought about it before. Oh, actually, I don't really remember if it was this year or not but, I do recall there was one fic... or maybe event? That after I had finished working on something for it, I went and got pizza because I was happy with getting it done haha I don't think I could tell ya what it was in relation to though hahaha

25. Recharging between fics usually is just me drawing or writing something else (usually a snippet), since a lot of times fics vary in size. I'll also read other people's fics but uh... I shamefully haven't done that in a long while. Trying to reread the manga really jammed me up there haha (also guilty that the last fic I read I stopped reading because I didn't want it to end, and then happened to get sucked into a lot of things haha).

26. I think you might just be able to tell I draw outside writing fanfiction. Although I guess with the blurbs, sometimes I'm doing both at the same time haha In rare occasions, sometimes the blurbs are poetry/made-up song lyrics. I'm not much of a musician, surprisingly.

27. How many events did I take part in... shoot there were quite a few haha There was definitely the Valentine's Exchange, March of Madness, Reverb, Soultember, that Thanksgiving thing- oh the trick-or-treating too haha, Secret Santa (almost done making mine), and of course Resbang haha Oh yes, SoMa Day. Looking forward to next year's :^)

28. I would like to thank the entire Grigori Wings server, it's such a nice fandom home there haha. And as always, everyone who enjoys the Soul variant shenanigans! 29. What's left on my to-do list this... oh fuck I forgot I still need to finish that animation. At this point I have no idea how to approach it anymore, I'm in too deep, chat.

30. Last question! What would I like to do next year? Well, just wherever the wind takes me haha. Though specific things would be working on Resbang, doing my New Years raffle, and hopefully going through and doing one final edit of all my works so that I can update the formatting an' whatnot. I also need to update The Ramble Room as well, but one thing at a time haha I always have so many ideas for so many things, so I just enjoy doing what I can whenever it happens haha. I'd also like to actually not be anxious about going through the Soul Eater tag, and also maybe finish rereading the manga / bonk my brain into reading people's fics again, so we'll see what happens haha

Whew, that should be all the questions haha Of course I always am open to questions all the time (and for those still in my ask box, I didn't forget, I just have to ration out my ability to focus haha), but this was fun to just do for a bit :-)
