April 5, 2024 - Friday | Ramadan Challenge 26/30
I’m on 2 gift committees and honestly it’s so much work and so much time spent looking at product descriptions 😵💫 but the stuff I ended up picking out ended up being so cute (pearl hair clips!) super excited for everyone to receive them 💕 In other news, today was the minor earthquake in ny 😰 Allah saved us.
Day 26: Your Laylatul-Qadr worship routine! Dhikr? Dua? Salah? Usually I do multiple rotations of all three. This year I wasn't able to stay up every odd night so my routine was salah, dua, and then dhikr till I fell asleep, and then if I was able to wake up again then I focused on salah and reading qur'an.

5 April 2024, Friday
Probably the most peaceful and tranquil night I’ve spent this Ramadan, alhamdulillah. I think this one night really shows what we’re capable of when it comes to worship.
Day 26: Your Laylatul-Qadr worship routine! Dhikr? Dua? Salah? Tell us!
A bit of everything! Though I should say what kept me really motivated in night worship is setting a goal to recite a certain amount of Quran (more than you would on the daily - so if I recite one chapter per day I’d set a goal of 3 or 4 chapters throughout the night). I managed to finish my khatam earlier than planned tonight :) And in between I took breaks for salah, dua and dikr. I took an hour nap before suhoor and continued until sunrise. This worked for me this year. And this was the first time I attempted qiyamulayl whole heartedly and intentionally and I’m giving a big shoutout to last years challenge buddies cause their responses really inspired to do so this year :)

Latest Developments
Hamas rejected the latest Gaza ceasefire proposal on April 4, refusing to compromise on its maximalist position. “We are committed to our demands,” Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh said. Those demands include a permanent ceasefire, Israel’s complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the return of Palestinians displaced from northern Gaza, and an “honorable prisoner exchange deal,” Haniyeh said. Jerusalem has repeatedly made clear that any deal that leaves Hamas intact is unacceptable.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu greenlighted the latest round of Egyptian- and Qatari-mediated talks on March 29, giving the Israeli team what his office described as “room to operate” in negotiations. Jerusalem accepted the latest proposal, which would have seen Israel temporarily pause its counteroffensive in Gaza and Hamas free the remaining hostages.
Expert Analysis
“Hamas has said that it is unwilling to back down from its outrageous demands. Since Yahya Sinwar and Mohammad Deif understand their days are numbered, their incentive to make a deal is limited or possibly nonexistent. They seem to be mercilessly dragging the hostage families through this process over and over again just to remain in the headlines.” — Enia Krivine, Senior Director of FDD’s Israel Program and National Security Network
“Israel wants to negotiate a hostage release before finishing off Hamas. Hamas wants to survive. The more Hamas leaders believe they will survive without giving up their leverage — hostages — the more they will hold out. The more they believe they have no other choice, the more seriously they will negotiate.” — Richard Goldberg, FDD Senior Advisor
Hamas Turns Down Four Ceasefire Offers
Hamas rejected previous ceasefire proposals in December and January. In February, the White House expressed hope that Hamas had scaled back its demands, but the terrorist group continued to dig in its heels. In late March, Israel agreed to pause its counteroffensive in Gaza for six weeks and release approximately 700 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 40 Israeli hostages. Hamas rejected that offer on March 26. Israeli officials claimed that Hamas had sabotaged negotiations by trying to turn the proposed ceasefire into the restoration of the status quo ante.
Israeli officials attributed Hamas’s position to efforts by the group’s Gaza leader, Yahya Sinwar, to keep tensions high during Ramadan, with a view to provoking escalation. They also suggested that Hamas’s position hardened after the United States abstained from a UN Security Council vote on March 25, tacitly allowing the council to pass a resolution that called for a ceasefire without explicitly conditioning it on a hostage release.
130 Hostages Remain in Gaza
Hamas released 81 Israeli hostages during a week-long pause in November in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners. Additionally, Hamas released 23 Thai nationals, one Filipino, and three Israeli-Russian dual citizens under separate arrangements with Bangkok, Manila, and Moscow. The pause collapsed on December 1, when Hamas refused to provide a list of the remaining women and children in captivity and resumed launching rockets at Israel. On February 12, Israeli special forces rescued two hostages — Fernando Marman, 61, and Louis Har, 70 — from Rafah in southern Gaza. Approximately 130 hostages remain in Gaza, 34 of whom Israel believes are no longer alive.
==
Reminder, and particularly for the "ceasefire now" apologists, that Hamas don't want a "ceasefire," they want dead Jews. They broke the last ceasefire, and October 7 terrorist attack was itself a violation of the ceasefire in place at the time.
The only way this ends is for Hamas to be completely exterminated.

My dear lovely Ramadan
It's the 26th day, but I feel like my heart is going to be so sad and lonely without you. When you came, you gave me the warm embrace I needed, the love, and the feeling I can't describe or explain. I'll try my best to hold on to the things you've taught me. I'm going to miss you so much. You came 26 days ago, but I still feel like it was yesterday. I'll try to keep up with the Sunnah fast so I can have a glimpse of what you've given me. I don't want you to go, but I keep making dua that this is not the last time we meet. And I keep making dua that my best Ramadan be my last one, and may the final goodbye from you feel special.

What is the importance of Friday and what are the deeds of worship to be performed on that day?
The reason why that day is called Friday is being a day of coming together.
"…When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday (the Day of Assembly), hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of Allah, and leave off business (and traffic)..." (al-Jumu'a, 62/9)
The verse above in the chapter of al-Jumu’a indicates that the day was called like that before Friday prayer was rendered fard and that it is a day of meeting.
According to what is understood from various hadiths, Friday was determined as the day of weekly worship for Jews and Christians before but they fell into dispute about it and Jews adopted Saturday and Christians adopted Sunday for weekly meeting and worship. Allah enabled Muslims to have Friday as the day of weekly worship and to attain the truth regarding the issue. (Muslim, Jumu'a, 19-23). Thus, Friday was chosen as the day of weekly worship in congregation and it is clearly stated in several narrations that it is a day of eid (feast). (Bayhaqi, as-Sunanul-Kubra, 3/243; Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, Zadul-Masir, 1/369)
"The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; Adam was created on that day. He entered Paradise on that day and he was expelled from Paradise on that day. Doomsday will take place on Friday." (Muslim, Jumu'a, 18)
The Prophet (pbuh) expressed the specialty of that day with the hadith above. Allah stated that He would allow His slaves to visit Him in Paradise on "yawmul-mazid" corresponding to Friday in the world (Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, I, 369-372, 408-410), and that the prayers said at a certain time (time of answering) on Friday would be accepted.
Various views were put forward about the exact time of answering like the period from zawal time to the start of the Friday prayer, from imam’s ascending the pulpit to the start or end of the Friday prayer, from adhan to the end of Friday prayer, from dawn to sunrise and from the afternoon prayer to sunset. Based on the hadith of the Prophet "I knew it but I was made forget it afterwards like the night of Qadr (Power)." (Hakim, Mustadrak, 1/279), it is stated that the time of answering was kept a secret so that people would worship Allah all day on Friday like ism al-a’zam (the greatest name) of Allah being kept secret among His beautiful names and the night of Qadr (Power) being kept secret among the last ten days of Ramadan.
It is stated that the sins of a person who cleans himself on Friday, goes to mosque, listens to the sermon and performs Friday prayer between that Friday and the next Friday will be forgiven (Bukhari, Jumu‘a 6, 19; Muslim, Jumu'a, 26), and that the heart of a person who leaves Friday prayer (continuously) for three Fridays on account of slackness will be stamped. (Abu Dawud, Salah, 204)
When the day of Arafah is on Friday, hajj, which is the greatest congregational deed of worship that brings together Muslims from all around the world, is called "hajj al-akbar" (the greatest hajj).
Due to those properties, the following things are regarded as sunnah to do in addition to Friday prayer, which is fard, on Friday, which is very important as individuals and the community in terms of Muslims:
To make ghusl (it is fard according to some scholars), to shorten the mustache, to trim nails, to do other bodily cleaning, to clean teeth with a miswak or brush, to wear nice clothes, to go to the mosque early, to read the chapter of al-Kahf, to clean the mosque and to make it smell nice, to read the chapters of as-Sajdah and ad-Dahr in the morning prayer, to read the chapters of al-Jumua and al-Munafiqun or al-Ala and al-Ghashiya in Friday prayer, to say prayers and make dhikr a lot, to utter salawat for the Prophet.
To perform Friday prayer is fard for every sane Muslim man who has reached the age of puberty. (al-Jumu’a, 62/9-10). When adhan is called, it is necessary to go to mosque at once without being busy with anything else.
Since Friday is the day of feast, it is makruh to fast only on Friday, without adding the day before or after it. It is also regarded makruh to enter the mosque after adhan, to be busy with shopping or other worldly affairs from the time the imam ascends the pulpit when adhan is called to the time the Friday prayer is performed unless there is an obligation and to set off for a journey after the time period for the Friday prayer starts without performing Friday prayer.
During the sermon, A person who speaks unnecessarily and who deals with other things is deprived of thawabs; to go to mosque before adhan, not to disturb the believers, to listen to the sermon with awe, to perform the prayer in awe will be atonement for the sins committed between the previous Friday and that Friday and for three more days. For Allah Almighty states the following in the Quran:
“He that doeth good shall have ten times as much to his credit.” (al-An’am, 6/160)
Therefore, a Muslim should increase the righteous deeds on Friday. Muslims, who are declared as brothers by Allah, should perform worship, which is the purpose of their creation (adh-Dhariyat 51/56) and to compete to do good deeds, which is the command of Allah (al-Baqara 2/148), on Friday like the other holy days and nights. Let us end the issue with a saying of scholars related to Friday:
“Friday is the criterion for the week, Ramadan for the year and hajj for the life.”

April 17, 2023 - Monday | Ramadan Challenge 🌙 26/30
Day 26: Mention your favorite story about the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, or which of his qualities you look up to the most.
It's so hard to choose a favorite story, he really was a mercy to all of mankind and was filled with so much love for people. I'll just mention one that I remember about when a Sahaba saw the prophet ﷺ giving a kiss to his little grandson and the man was like 'I have ten children and I don't ever kiss any of them' as if to be like 'you're so different/strange' and the prophet ﷺ told him "Whoever does not show mercy will not receive mercy."
Another incident is when he was asked who is favorite was and he said his wife and the sahaba was like 'no obviously I mean from the men.' Like some of these uncles nowadays think they're so religious but would rather die than appreciate their wife lol, much less in front of other men. Tbh we can all learn from the example of the prophet ﷺ

26 March 2024, Tuesday
Work was great today because we published a report I’ve been working on for a long time, and we hosted a friend for Iftar today :)
Day 16: Favorite time to read qur'an during Ramadan? What about outside of Ramadan?
After taraweeh prayers for sure. It’s the only stress-free downtime I get when everything is done for the day and there’s a few hours left til bedtime. Outside of Ramadan, after fajr and between magrib and isha prayers are my usual Quran times.

ISLAM 101: Muslim Culture and Character: Morals And Manners: Part 6
PRACTICING GOOD CONDUCT IN THE FAMILY
Good character is not only taught but can also be caught. Being a person of good character can best be achieved by learning what is good and bad, observing the limits set by God in the Scripture, witnessing good conduct in daily life, and emulating personal examples. To this end, modeling good character, especially in the family, is essential in raising children with character.
Morality, manners, and social life are learned in the family first. Healthy ordered family life is necessary, as love and respect can be witnessed best in such a family. Good character characteristics can be gained and developed in the family. A child who learns respect for the grandmother and grandfather, obedience to the father and mother and decent behavior toward those of their own generation within the family will have these positive traits when they enter society at large.
With that introduction, let us take a look at good conduct in the family.
TREATING CHILDREN WITH COMPASSION
As is well known, daily prayers and fasting are among the most essential pillars of our faith. But in both these practices, we can clearly see compassion for children, both in the religious guidelines and in the example of the Prophet’s life. While performing daily prayers has the highest priority in worship for the Prophet, he never refrained from being kind to children, even while praying or leading the congregational prayers. For example, the Prophet’s granddaughter Umama would come to the mosque to play and climb on the Prophet’s shoulders and back as he led the prayers. When he went to prostrate he put the child down, and when he straightened up he took her up on his shoulders again. Sometimes he wished to lengthen the congregational prayers, but if he heard a child crying at the back of the mosque, he would change his plans and shorten the prayers out of compassion for the child and the feelings of the mother
There is another important narration which demonstrates clearly the extent of Prophet Muhammad’s consideration for children. This was conveyed by ‘Abdullah ibn Shaddad from his father: “God’s Messenger came to us for the evening prayers one day. He carried one of his grandchildren, Hasan or Husayn. He put the child on the floor and went to the front (to lead us). Then he recited the opening takbir and began the prayers. During the prayer, he stayed prostrated for a long time. (Since it was so long) I picked up my head and looked. What did I see! A child had climbed on the Prophet’s back while he was prostrating, and was sitting there. Immediately I prostrated again. When the prayers had finished, the people asked him, ‘O Messenger of God! The prostration was so long, we thought something had happened to
you, or perhaps you were receiving revelation?’ He answered, ‘No! Neither of these things happened. My child had climbed on my back. I thought it inappropriate to hurry him to get off before he was ready to (I waited until he got down before continuing).’”
This compassion for children in Islam is not limited to prayer times. When we look at fasting (in the month of Ramadan, when all believers are required to fast), there are important exceptions for mothers and children. For example, as a mercy from God to women and their children, pregnant or nursing mothers are given legal allowance not to fast.
Again, another important principle is that children under the age of puberty are not obligated to observe the fast. They are also exempted from the obligation of the other acts of worship until they reach the age of puberty and discretion.26 Normally this age is considered to be fifteen years old.
One of the most serious wrongs that can be done to a child is for the parents to curse the child—even if it only happens “by mistake” due to impatience on a rare occasion. The danger of this type of curse is that even when the bad words slip out of a person’s mouth, they are a form of prayer. Jabir relates, “The Messenger said, ‘Do not pray against your own souls, do not pray against your children, do not pray against your servants. Do not even pray against your possessions. For if you pray at the time when prayers are accepted, God may accept your prayer.”
Once in a war zone, some children were caught between the enemy lines and were killed. When the Prophet heard about this, he was grief-stricken. The soldiers, seeing this, asked him, “O Messenger of God, why are you so disconsolate? Were not these children of the enemies of God?” He answered, “Even if they were children of the enemy, they were human beings. Weren’t the most pious among you the children of the enemy at one point? You must take the utmost care never to kill children. By God, every life is created with a nature that is open to faith and Islam.”
One day when he was being affectionate to his grandchildren, a Bedouin came into the Prophet’s presence. When this man, who was devoid of compassion for his children, saw the scene, he could not hide his surprise and said, “I have ten children, and I have never kissed any of them.” The Prophet answered, “If God Almighty has extracted all the mercy from your heart, what can I do? Those who have no mercy will be shown none.”30
Anas ibn Malik recounted, “The Prophet used to join us children and, smiling, banter with us.” Anas also recalled, “I served God’s Messenger for ten years. I swear before God, he never once lost his patience with me. He never asked me, ‘Why did you do that? You should have done it another way.’”
RESPECT
The dictionary definition of “respect” includes “the feeling that arises from holding someone in high esteem which inspires conduct
that shows the person they are valued”; “valuing someone and desiring not to disappoint them”; “a type of love which causes one to act with care and propriety around someone, and treat them with altruism.” Thus, the meaning of respect is connected with love, which explains why the most common word occurring alongside “respect” is “love.” The bonds of brotherhood between members of a community are strengthened by love and respect. The secret of success also lies in loving and respecting others.
It is a sign of respect to the Creator when we respect and love other people simply because they are human. To love only those who think as we do is not sincere love for humankind; it is self-serving, and can even be a form of idolatry of the self. Likewise, it is not true respect to show deference to people only according to their rank or position. One who does not love everyone does not deserve to be loved; if one is constantly reviling the poor and unfortunate, they will lose the right to expect love and respect from others. According to a narration from Abu Musa, the Prophet said, “To show respect to an old Muslim with white hair, to a hafiz (a person who has memorized the Qur’an)
as long as they recite and live by the Qur’an, or to a righteous ruler all manifest true respect for God.”
It is part of adab to let older people speak before young people in daily conversations or situations. The following hadith exemplifies this tradition. Abu Yahya of the Ansar related, “Abdur Rahman ibn Sahl went with Muhayyisa ibn Mas’ud to Haybar. They separated from one another to take care of their individual business. Then they came to Medina. Abdur Rahman and Muhayyisa, the sons of Mas’ud, went into the Prophet’s presence. When Abdur Rahman wanted to talk, God’s Messenger told him, ‘Let older people speak.’ For Abdur Rahman was the youngest of the brothers.” Therefore it is important to give elders the chance to speak first, out of respect for their experience and wisdom. Younger people should speak when spoken to or when asked a question, instead of monopolizing the conversation.
Lastly, Samura ibn Jundab, a Companion who was a child during the Prophet’s life, recalls the following: “I was a child during the time of the Prophet and I memorized whatever I heard when he was teaching. The only thing that kept me from speaking in the gatherings was that there were older people there.”
Treating the Elderly with Respect
In Islam, the general rule is that those who are older than us should be respected, and those who are younger than us should be loved. In addition, it is commendable to care for those who have fallen on hard times. In fact, God’s help reaches us through those people who need our help; our subsistence and sustenance may be increased for the sake of the adults and children whom we support.
The basic rule of respect for elders is even more important between family members. An example is extra respect due to mothers and fathers. It is not proper to call our parents by their first names. Below are some of the hadith of the Prophet on this topic:
“If any young person shows respect to an older person because of the age difference, God will appoint someone to show him similar respect when he himself grows old.”36 This hadith informs us that young people will be rewarded for respecting elders and will be shown respect as they themselves grow old. Young people who perceive the elderly as a burden should think about this.
“Those who do not show mercy to younger people or show respect to older people are not of us.” This hadith summarizes the relationship between younger and older people in a clear and succinct manner. The Prophet said, “To have respect for an older Muslim with graying hair shows one has respect for God.”
In order to develop feelings of respect towards elders the following issues should be focused on:
In all the family business of a household, the father and mother should be considered the authorities. This behavior encourages the internalization of respect for elders. A hadith says, “Blessings are to be found next to your elders.”
The respect and reverence shown by parents to their own mother and father (i.e., the children’s grandparents) serve as a great lesson to the children. If a child’s mother and father are always loving and compassionate, the child will be more aware of the duty and obligation to respect their parents and other elders. People develop this awareness over a long time and through habit. A child needs to see how to obey and respect elders over and over again to absorb this lesson. Otherwise, it would be difficult—sometimes even impossible—to expect the desired result to come by simply teaching rules that are not practiced. God’s Messenger expressed the critical need in society for young people to maintain respectful attitudes and behavior toward those who are older than themselves: “If there were not white-haired elders, suckling babies, and grazing animals among you, calamities would have rained down on you like a flood.”
Kissing the Hands of the Elderly and Esteemed People
We show our respect for older persons and scholars by kissing their hands. We know from narrations that the Companions kissed the hand of the Prophet. God’s Messenger said, “Our elders are a blessing. Those who do not respect elders and show compassion for youths are not of us.” Children usually kiss the hands of all their elders; after puberty, young people should kiss the hands of their mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and older siblings.
It is accepted that kissing the hands of Islamic scholars is mubah, or “acceptable,” if it is done out of respect or piety, but it is unacceptable to kiss someone’s hand for worldly reasons. Just as it is forbidden for members of the opposite sex to hold hands in
Islam, it is also objectionable to engage in flattery or sycophancy or to bow before others. There is some disagreement regarding whether a son-in-law should kiss the hand of his mother-in-law or a daughter-in-law the hand of her father-in-law. There is no harm in kissing the hands of elderly women as a sign of respect. What is important here is that kissing a person’s hand is performed as a sign of respect.
While heeding the warning of God’s Messenger, “Do not stand up as the Persians stand up for each other,” the elder should not desire to have his or her hand kissed, but the youth should try to kiss the hand of the elder person; an older person should not expect a show of respect, but the younger should not neglect to do so. It is also to be noted here that members of various communities would come and ask the Prophet questions and he would answer all their questions. Tirmidhi relates that two people of the Jewish community in Medina came to ask the Messenger a question and they kissed his hand.
To show respect for scholars and holy people, and so on, one may kiss their hands or perform musafaha44 with them. There is no objection either way, for we should respect real knowledge and God-consciousness. However, it would be wrong for a person to consider themselves to be holy and thus expect their hand to be kissed. It is also permissible for the hands of other older people to be kissed out of respect for their piety. But prostrating in front of scholars or other people is not permissible. To do so, or allowing this to be done, is a sin as it borders on a kind of idol worship. For this reason, Muslims should not perform such actions.
