MYSTERIOUS PENANCE IN THE CREMATION GROUND
Date and Time: February 16, 1982, 10:30 ╬С.╬Ь. Place: Courtyard of "Shri Sarveshwari Niwas", Parao, Rajghat, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
While collecting material for this book I (the writer) asked my guru-brother seeker Darshi (disciple of Aghoreshwar Mahaprabhu), 'Have you ever participated in spiritual practices? If you have participated then please be kind enough to tell me your experience.'
Darshi Ji said, 'I am telling you as much as I remember. There is a lot that I do not remember. I have my guru's permission to describe for the devotees the spiritual practices that I am going to tell you about. Please listen with faith and respect to what I am going to narrate. Listen, and if you want
to, you can even write it down. But yes, please be careful not to interrupt me.'
Darshi Ji began to speak and he went on speaking. I did not think it proper to interrupt the story of a carefree seeker. Whatever I could, I wrote down, and what I could not, it is impossible to write. Following is a description of the mysterious scenes of worship and spiritual practices in the cremation ground, as heard from Darshi Ji-
'One day at sunset I was going to the cremation ground with Gurudev Aghoreshwar. My heart and mind were eagerly focused on the worship of the God of the cremation ground. Holding the bag with all the necessary ingredients for worshipping the God of the cremation ground in my hand. I advanced with Gurudev towards the cremation ground situated on the bank of the river. Suddenly Gurudev looked back and saw the young seeker Sambhav approaching us with quick steps. Gurudev said to him, 'How fast are you walking, all soaked in sweat?'
He joined his palms and replied 'Life is full of darkness. The path through the forest of life was pretty wild. I had to cross like a lotus flower three rivers that were three women, and I was mercilessly assailed by the passion of youth as well as the fire of worldly and physical desires. Dada! Is it true that when the universe of aughars becomes overheated it leads to furious rains? I have heard if aughars sit bareback in the sun then after the heat of the whole day the cosmos begins to boil, which results in such terrible rains it cannot even be described. I became frightened today when I saw such an aughar wearing nothing sitting on a rock. I saw simultaneously that because of his spiritual penance clouds had begun to rise from the western sky. Therefore with the apprehension that it will become difficult to cross rivers and streams to reach this place if it rains furiously, I am coming so fast.'
Talking in this way, crossing rivers, we had hardly reached the entrance of the sacred complex (of the cremation ground) that the sky became overcast with clouds on all sides. Because of the dark clouds pitch black darkness enveloped everything. Lightning began to flash amidst the mutual tussle, thunder and crash of the clouds. Terrible, ear-piercing sounds began to arise from all directions in this cacophony. The whole atmosphere generated fear and then it began to rain really hard. The waves of the river began to crash into each other.
Right then Sambhav seeker said, 'Look Dada! Didn't I say as soon as an aughar's cosmos overheats rains cross all their bounds and make rivers turbulent. That is what has happened. Now it will be difficult even to find dry wood (for fuel). It seems impossible to find and collect all other necessary material and to light the fire.'
Gurudev Aghoreshwar laughed loudly and said, 'Do not worry. A mix of the fire-element with the air-element will soon part the clouds. The level of the water will go down in the rivers. Nearby, about a mile away is a village where lives a devotee of mine by the name of Gohan. He has all materials for worship in his house. Go slowly, and bring them here. Bring also Gohan with you.'
Sambhav seeker asked, 'Dada! I hope that devotee will not create any disturbance in our worship?"
Aghoreshwar replied, 'Oh no! He will not be a disturbance, but an assistance, in our worship. He will worship very well. He lives in a divine state. He keeps all the mysteries completely undisclosed.'
At that moment lightning flashed with a resounding thunder and the wind began to blow hard. Even as we watched the clouds disappeared from the sky. Water stopped rising in rivers and streams. The sky became clear. It appeared as if the stars were admiring the spiritual altar. Sambhav devotee slowly waded through chest-deep river-water and reaching that village he brought back on time Gohan and the materials, already prepared at his house, to the cremation ground.
After salutations when Gohan got introduced to me and Sambhav seeker, he said 'Dada! You are a strange person. You maintain your kind grace, your benevolent shadow, your attention, towards humble seekers.' Aghoreshwar replied, 'They are inquisitive. But not just inquisitive, they are also teachers of the eternal truth. Come. Give the Yantra-Goddess a bath and arrange properly in front of her the kalash┬╣ for worship.'
Darkness had fallen all around. It appeared as if the stars were peeping down at night to watch the worship [comprising] of benevolent actions. After we had gathered the materials of worship such as ritual fuelwood, flowers of yellow oleander (Kanail), rose, and red hibiscus (Orhul), wine, fish etc., that day I and the young seeker Sambhav saw the pure eyes of the Aghoreshwar on going near him.
Sambhav seeker said, 'Oh joy! Even as the dear son of my mother and father I never saw eyes full of such compassion. Even in meditating on the Divine Mother I have never seen eyes suffused with so much compassion in them. Even as he thought and said this, Sambhav seeker became centered within himself and attained a state of deep absorption. Gohan and I also attained the same state. Seeing the Aghoreshwar float three feet up in the air while sitting in the lotus position Sambhav seeker became dumbstruck with amazement. Both the seekers gave oblations to the Prana present in their body, and then they also gave five oblations each to the fire burning outside. In the light of the fire ablaze they saw their guru Aghoreshwar give oblation to his Prana.
Because of heavy rains which delayed her in crossing the river, Mother Bhairavi could reach us only a little later. Her absence had been an intermittent cause of concern. It had become very late. Only a little before finishing the worship when Mahabhairava Aghoreshwar had just made an offering of the flowers from his basket, Mother Bhairavi arrived. It is impossible to describe the glory of the moment of meeting her, and of performing the worship with her. You will read about it elsewhere in an appropriate place.
The scene of worshipping the Mother in the form of the Prana within our body was very strange and mysterious. On seeing it questions naturally arose in the mind of young seeker Sambhav. Immediately after this shafts of light began to emanate from the body of the Aghoreshwar. We saw thumb-sized exact images of mine, Gohan's and Sambhav seeker's in that bright light. On seeing them all of us seekers became amazed. Next we saw the Aghoreshwar float more than three feet in the air, and with two divine female deities holding cups in their hands, seated armidst the darting flames of the consecrated fire pit. Then the thumb- sized images of mine, Gohan, and Sambhav seeker joined their palms and bowed before the Aghoreshwar, and began to chant his words. After that it felt as if a deafening explosion ripped the sky. All the four directions began to shake. The reflections of the flames of the fire pit on the green leaves of the sacred fig (Peepal) tree standing in the cremation ground seemed to be putting the lights of Deepawali to shame. The white foam boiling up from the river, like a clean white cloth, was trying to cover, to douse the burning fire. Simultaneously the sound of 'Om Ma Krin, Om Ma Krin' began to resonate by itself. Just then, for a moment, we heard the many skulls scattered around the cremation ground laugh in a terrible voice. Then slowly, beautiful, meter-bound, rhythmic music began to reverberate from these skulls which made the whole scene incredibly enchanting like a surreal dream. Suddenly the right hand of Aughar-Aghoreshwar rose towards the sky. The sacred fig tree shook violently once. The waves of the river quieted down and its water began to flow on its designated course. Becoming fearless, awestruck seekers as if returned back to their normal state. The thumb-sized images of mine, Gohan and Sambhav seeker disappeared into the body of the Aghoreshwar. With that the two divine female deities with cups in their hands disappeared into the body of Mother Bhairavi.
As soon as these otherworldly scenes concluded Sambhav seeker said, 'Dada! What was all this that I saw? Is this the cosmic form of the Kapaleshwar? Is this how he travels through the air, and remains in the cosmic bowl? He entered into your body, taking your form he gave us the boon of fearlessness, and the boon of attaining even the end of eternity, and disappeared. Dada Aghoreshwar! In the same way that you made us perform this unforgettable worship, showed to us your divine form in the cremation ground, and satisfied us by revealing your true form to us, will you again show us this kind of grace?"
Aghoreshwar said, 'Oh no! This difficult worship is performed only by those who have subjugated their senses and made their mind free of all desire. Only by the worship of such seekers do you get the kind of manifest vision that you got today. The moment in which the God of the cremation ground, Mahakal, accepts the oblation of a lifeless body, that one moment is as full of joy as a whole eon. Otherwise, one may perform prayers and rituals for years and not derive the object of desire as if in a famine. That is why it has been said in the presence of your Guru your senses become controlled, your mantra comes alive, and even the Gods take notice. The storm of change and reformation that has started in the solar-system after the year 1960 will move in a circle from the present day East Pakistan (Bangladesh), India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria-Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, England, Argentina and continue to move forward till it has completed the circle. These terrible conditions will eventually turn into peace. This is the secret of this worship of the God of the cremation ground.
The rooster has begun to crow. It is three in the morning. Let us leave now and perform those routines whose time and occasion we are aware of, because soon people from surrounding villages and cities will begin to arrive here to offer the dead into the fire that exists in the form of Mahakal here. It does not seem appropriate for us to stay here any longer. Put into the water the altar of the cremation ground. The Divine Mother exists here as a sacred instrument, turn her upside down and cover her with sand. We will come here again on the 14th of the dark half of the moon in the month of Vaishakh to perform this glorious, mysterious worship of the Kapaleshwar.
It is a great worship to service deiform beings on this earth. Come, let us be involved with joy in this great and benevolent task, in the same way that we care for our own Prana.
Mine, young seeker Sambhav's and devotee Gohan's eyes remained shut for an instant, therefore we could not see the mysterious activity of the Aghoreshwar at that moment. We could not tell who went in which direction. Yes, for a fleeting moment Sambhav saw Aghoreshwar moving so fast that his feet were not touching the ground. He rose up and disappeared from sight so fast that it cannot be described.
I, young seeker Sambhav and Gohan felt ourselves to be very light. We did not have to exert ourselves at all to cover the path. Our steps, rising themselves, took us to our respective directions.
"Glory to Kali with the bowl! Be benevolent, give us virtue, splendor and radiance."

Culture means something living, moving, evolving, growing, developing, becoming tremendously vital. But that vitality, that expansion, that growth, that intensity is denied when it becomes Indian, Muslim, Catholic, or this or that.
