I am probably that mom you don’t want your kids around. I crush dreams by telling my child I pay for Christmas not some fat dude breaking into our house once a year. I don’t celebrate valentines because I live you all day, everyday. I don’t celebrate Mother’s Day because I’m a mother who should be celebrated everyday. Yes I’m that mom. I gave my daughter a job at four to give me peace and quit. She kept a job because we were on a journey of discovery that I hadn’t planned. I chose homeschool because there are lessons that are ignored in traditional school settings. When budgets are cut it’s the low performing schools that suffer. While receiving a traditional education my child is reduced to her attendance record and how much information she can regurgitate based on someone else’s standard of her. I finally realized my child will not be paid in grades. She will be paid in cash. The expectation for high paying jobs are higher education but please squeeze in some experience so I won’t have to waste resources training you. Gone are the days of internship and apprenticeship. Gone are the challenges of life because we think life is hard enough. It stops here. This is for me this morning. Yesterday I had a mini meltdown because I was looking at my progress through my own eyes instead of God's eyes. He created a passion in me to help kids to the best of my ability. The more I walk into what He's telling, the more I feel like no one is listening. I know that greater is He that is in me is greater than he that is in the world. I know that he is already defeated and I'm walking in the promises of God. I not by power or might but by His Spirit is how it will get down today and every day. So I receive this for myself this morning. As a Parentalpreneur Business Advisor I try to keep up with the goings on of the latest entrepreneurial teen. Well this time I dug a little deeper and took a look at their parents. As I work on my core value coaching guide. I reminisce on the times I went off the rails for the sake of putting someone in their place. It was a person I loved and although he did something that hurt me to my core. I chose to respond from my core in the negative. I can honestly say my ghetto country persona was yanked from its resting place to defend me and did a damn fine job. That is until I had to apologize to my daughter. She witnessed a side of me that her father has never seen in our 18+ years together. I can't deny it's a part of my core makeup but I make the choice when needed to operate in the positive. It's not always how I feel but sometimes I have to put my feelings in my pocket until a more appropriate time. When I chose to bring my daughter into our business, it was my opportunity to show her that despite all the crazy of being an entrepreneur you can handle it with grace and calm. The episode she witness was not a work thing but it spilled over into my work life. I do my best to operate from my positive core values. Am I trying to be perfect? NO! Am I trying to be better? YES! I could have just as easily walked away from the situation. Instead, I chose to blow up. I can't take it back. I can't undo it. I apologized to all involved and moved on to do better and be better. I am so a kinesthetic learner. Even though I may bore easy I want to do it myself. If you know your child’s learning style it takes the challenge out of teaching them certain things. If they learn the same way you learn, the world is perfect. If they need to learn differently and you know this, the veins in your forehead will get a break. As a parentalpreneur teach your kid what you know but do it in a way they understand. And you know I’m all about keeping it age appropriate. Don’t give up because it’s a slow start. You’re both learning just different things at the same time. Don't confuse E's with easy. I would not want to give you that false reality. Bringing your babies (kids and business) together takes time on your part. Time and patience. You can take the time you spend under parental guilt and teach your child about the business. I know you're thinking "but they're so young," So are all those babies on the Disney Channel, but they gettin' paid. Your kid is just as smart, if not smarter, as they are. How often do you go around bragging about how smart your kid is. Got folks saying 'oh Lord, here she comes talking about that baby again.' Prove it by showing more than school grades. What task can they take off your plate? Now, if you're a control freak this may be hard. Slowly back away from the crazy and think of the benefit to you and yours. You don't have to do it and they are productive. Now you both have free time for a power lunch. Baby steps boo. My husband makes me look good. I'm not talking about the haircut, I'm talking about being my biggest supporter. Even on our worse days when I'm not feeling marital, he stays in my corner. It has been that way since we've been together. After receiving my coaching certification, I began to drift away from our business and take on clients. His response was, "do yo thang baby. I got this." When I told him I wanted to leave the family business to pursue my new career his response was, "I'm going where you go." When I added that I wanted to sell our house and move to Oregon, he was the first to packing. There was no arguing, manipulation, or threats of divorce. He is committed to me as I am to him. If he had said no to any of those things I would have honored our marriage. We decided long ago that our marriage comes before any business. Being an entrepreneur at any level of the game takes not only your commitment but commitment from those you surround yourself with. If you don't have it then cultivate it. It's called social media for a reason. Connect with someone that will support your entrepreneurial endeavors. You don't have to be married to your Ride or Die. You don't have to be in the same city, state or country. Yes, my daughter is the original Chief Kid Officer. Getting her to that point was a challenge for both of us. Yes, it’s true she doesn’t always want to do the work, but neither do I some of the time. I’m not gone lie. The reason for my daughters first job was to occupy her so that I could get some work done. She was four, I worked from home and she was driving me crazy. Not on purpose but because I was trying to work as fast as possible so I could just be mommy. What ended up happening had a small ripple effect. I gave her one of my tedious task that only required me to say good job without looking up. I would then choose a task I could get done in an hour so we finished at the same time. She took a task off my to do list that freed me for something more important. She became a boss and when that hour was done we would have our power lunch and discuss the day. As we settled into our routine she asked for other task. Did you know a child that knows her numbers number and born during that tech age can reconcile a bank statement? You just have to break it up in small blocks of work and time. As a restaurant owner we had a lot of transactions so it was already a time consuming chore. Turning it into a daily challenge for my daughter took another task off my list, helped her with her numbers and gave me more time to work on my business. It was also giving me more time with my family. That was no t something I even considered when we started down this path. There are many benefits to hiring your child.
