ACCEPTING.

          THE HEAT OF BATTLE    rushes through him as he fights his way to freedom for america.    one more push,    that’s all they need to defeat the british and secure the key to a better life.    slick sweat beads across his brow,    the blood of his men and the men at his side splattered crudely on his uniform,    tainting the once pristine fabric,    now torn and muddy.    he can hear his heartbeat heavy in his ears through the thick cannon fire and the blast of guns around him,    loud enough to make him believe he could go deaf when                      the battle slows.    

the marquis raises his head to see the man,    red coat and all.    gun lowers as he eyes the frantic motion of a white handkerchief waving through the air.    it’s over,    but the taste of death and destruction remains on his tongue.    he reconnects with mulligan and laurens,     seeing them off as the pair leave to help the clean up:    the treatment of the wounded,    the adding up of the death toll.    a hand lands on john’s shoulder for only a moment before he makes his way back to the tent where hamilton,    washington,    and the other remaining american leaders of that treacherous war reside,    as well as a few aide - de- camps of the british side to negotiate the terms of surrender.    lafayette and hamilton both see it,    suddenly,    like a breath of fresh air through the dust and ashes:    washington smiles.    

the rest of the war feels longer than it is,    but peaceful.    the marquis watches as their previous opponents retreat out of yorktown and as he hears the screams,    church bells,    and drinking songs,    the realization finally hits him.    they have won.    a smile spreads across his face,    the quietest of laughs leaving him as the joy of victory flows through him.    they’ve done the impossible.    the world has truly turned upside down.    freedom for america,    freedom for france  !    he now longs for home more than ever,    to hold his adrienne in his arms and tell her of how they won better than he could ever do in a letter,    as well as his words to her flowed onto the paper.    gaze meets that of his friends,    of hamilton,    of laurens,    and of mulligan and the grin only grows.    a sigh leaves him as he wraps his arms over the shoulders of his friends,    beaming towards where washington stands.    this is what he fought for:    the shining faces of his friends and all the possibilities that were to come their way,    a brand new nation.    the glass is raised in honor of that glorious freedom they have achieved one last time before he returns home.

“After all of this time, do you truly believe that I do not care for you?” He whispered the question quickly, tone deepened and husky, before pressing kisses along John’s jaw, trying to show him just how much he cared.

dainty fingers GRIP clothes that’s far too big on her petite body, a nervousness settling in the pit of her stomach. what if he didn’t want to see her ? the idea almost caused her to turn back, run home. after all, this was NO place for someone like peggy. it was a TERRIBLE plan, one that had her doubting just how well she had thought this through. the war was over, they had won — surely, there was no danger. 

alexander had given her the information she NEEDED without realizing it, confiding to her the whereabouts of one colonel john laurens. excuses were spewed to family members before she left, claiming a TRIP was to be made. arrival just outside of beaufort county was successful, finding exactly WHO she wanted to see.  

many would call her INSANE for taking such a bold and daring risk, but according to alexander, the war was won — peggy felt as if nothing could harm her. she spots a man, dark curls pulled back away from his face and immediately knows it’s HIM, her heart beating rapidly, a sort of adrenaline filling her veins. 

hands SHAKE, and she can’t possibly tell if it’s due to excitement or nervousness. when she speaks, voice sounds smaller than she intended to, hands gripping the large shirt over her body.

That Alexander lasts through the entire class without punching that smug fuck Jefferson is a miracle.  By the end, his hands are shaking and he’s no longer sitting and his voice is actually an octave lower when he’s ranting.  Most people expect it to go higher, but it never does.  Not when he’s this angry.  Not when he’s ready to rip someone’s head off.  It’s always lower.  He might be yelling at this point, might be ready to shove Jefferson’s head up his own ass, but that doesn’t mean he turns into some squeaky little mouse.  Not when this kind of unbridled rage is pouring out of his mouth.

He hates these spoiled, rich, little fucks.  Especially when they start talking about things they will never understand.  When they start going on about his people.  There is a part of him that forgets that John comes from money, that wonders if one day he’s gonna say something in one of these rants that is going to push the man he loves away.  It doesn’t stop the way the words come tumbling out.  It probably never will.  Still, that worry will always be somewhere in the back of his mind when he loses it like this.

“You wouldn’t last an hour en el barrio without someone to hold your hand.  You talk about people ‘like me’, like you have any idea who I even am.  You wanna come at me with accusations!  Wanna talk about how I pay my way!  When was the last day daddy didn’t pay?”  

By the time Washington has John drag him from the room, Alex is so close to Jefferson, punching that smug look off of his face actually seems like a good idea.

It isn’t until those words settle in his mind that Alexander finally starts to calm down, a small smile twitching his lips every so slightly, even though he’s not sure he’s ready to smile just yet.

“....It wasn’t random,” he sinks against a nearby wall, “he’s an asshole.”
