Y’know for as much flak as Ward sometimes gets for not having enough folks give some level of push back/side eying some of Victoria’s more wild decisions, at least for punting people to planet Siberia like… I kinda think the part where it settles in for Colt its going to happen to her does that really well?

This is a child whose superpower massively fucks with her head, had a shitty enough home life she ran off with NAILBITER, pretty much trapped afterwards, and given aphetamines and a gun and told to go wildrght before her trigger. Especially coming from Worm, where Colt is the exact type of person who I feel like could have ended up with the Undersiders.

And we see her genuinely panicking, genuinely terrified as she realizes she's going to be punted into the middle of the wilderness in another dimension with basically no one else, and at best we get frustration and anger from Victoria and co towards her for this?

Because she hadn't realized ‘soon enough’ and was only now apologizing for the admittedly genuinely shitty things she did because there is consequences.I get that but also Rain, its REALLY easy to interpret your remorse as only feeling that way because your Cluster decided they were going to torture you to death and you of all people are NOT biased with her given she was working with Love Lost.

All the while Victoria very clearly is ignoring the signs her power has completely fucked her head during the conversation as they notice repeatedly Colt is spacing the hell out and barely lucid. Meanwhile in her very first interaction w Colt in a fight she figured out its the type of Breaker state to likely it has some sort of effect on her out of a fight, and in general she’s pieced together FAR more complicated power shit in fights. It’s patently clear her biases involved w the entire event and how close it affected her team are affecting her as well as just the general strain she is in during that part of the story.

I adore Victoria and this was one of the rare times I managed to actually was angry with her rather than being like ‘ok this is kinda fucked but I get it/it’s a fun part of her character,’ and honestly probably the best indictment of her whole secret no accountability exile thing we really could have gotten, even if I still would have liked to see her actually debate someone more over it/really defend it.

Ward back on the brain as of late.

If Rain was trans, I think she'd get outed via the dream room long before she worked up the courage to tell anyone irl. Love Lost would muster the effort to call her a faggot and Colt would be like "Mom stop she's a girl now you have to call her a dyke :(". Rain would start transitioning the next day because if she's gonna put up with "his pronouns are she/her" from Colt every night she's at least gonna be on estrogen about it.

I adore Worm, it's probably my favorite work of fiction ever, but it's weakest part is definitely it's male characters.

Which isn't necessarily a problem given that the main cast is overwhelmingly female and they're all written so incredibly well.

But Wildbow clearly noticed this disparity when writing Ward, cause he immediately chose to give so so much focus to Rain in the beginning and oh my god it's works so well.

I'm in love with this fucking guy, what a character, a fucked up piece of shit who's terrified of being murdered and wants to do better but has no clue if that want is his own, or bleed-through from the rest of his cluster. It's absolutely incredible.

I love what WB's doing with Vic but I'm at 5B and so far I've been looking forward to every single one of Rain's interludes in a way that I never ever did any of the ones in Worm. Just so immediately compelling.

One of my favorite little Ward moments is when Theo is talking to Rain about how Kaiser tried use him for child marriage/political marriage with Rune, and Cuff cuts in with calling her an ugly nazi motherfucker or something like that.

Cuff can be an absolute menace at times, holy shit.

AS WITH ALL MY MOSAICS DON'T LOOK TOO CLOSELY IF YOU ARE AVOIDING ALL SPOILERS! So you may have heard of a game that came out this summer, Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE, the one I've been posting marker drawings of characters from? Well I needed to do a mosaic for it so badly, I have been poking at this since convention season ended and have this to show! I wanted to do an ensemble piece featuring different chapters, people and places, but still keeping the abstract of the Mystery Labryinth! Both it and Kanai Ward are very fun settings, I enjoyed exploring them! Tumblr is compressing the image a bit, please open fully for a better look! I'll reblog it with some closer crops later too. This one will be a print for the 2024 convention season and appear in my shop after that!

Different context overall, but given I recently watched Wicked with my family those lyrics came to mind during this scene from Shadow Interlude 5d

Recently got to binge through the first half of Arc 5 (up to 5.8 atm) after very slowly getting through Arc 4 (mostly because of no time to read), thoughts below:

Arc 4 was a nice slower pace arc that seemed to mostly serve as setup for Arc 5 so far, giving some time for the therapy team to shine and get some development, Rain especially with probably the most interludes I’ve seen for a single character’s POV.

The Dream Room is interesting, seeing the same event from all the different perspectives of the cluster members (Love Lost’s hurt especially ouch). Like even without Kiss/Kill dynamics, I can see how getting a replay of your or someone else’s worst day every night would make you really want to hurt the guy responsible.

Victoria and Sveta’s relationship and scenes together are really cute. Would I ship them if I didn’t also like Sveta and Weld? Probably, but their dynamic is still great as friends (though Sveta does have 2 hands (technically a lot more than that ig))

The fight between Hollow Point / Therapy Team and Advance Guard was neat, big cape vs cape fights that aren’t big A-S class threats are interesting. Seems like there’s more of that to come in the chapters after this so looking forward to that

Prancer to me seems to essentially be a parallel to Skitter in her Warlord era, or at least how the PRT perceived her. Sure, he may not be the biggest threat around, but he’s entrenched himself pretty deep in his territory, keeping heroes out. If he chose to escalate, or someone overthrows him and takes what he’s built, it could become a problem.

Speaking of Skitter, oh boy the Undersiders are back! The gang’s back together, as the… antagonists? A bit complicated atm since as always they’re fighting a bigger threat while also creating trouble for the heroes. Never change, Tattletale.

Mama Mather’ power is horrific and very befitting someone leading a Simurgh cult. And her son’s the guy with the crazy Master that Skitter blinded? And he found a workaround? Oh that’s gonna be fun…
