Watched Lately
I love movies. They heal me. Here is a list of what I have watched lately and how it has healed me.
Deadpool v Wolverine at Galaxy Highland (this was the last movie Alex and I watched together in Austin before we moved to Illinois in Sept. 2024.). Reminded me that it's okay to be average.
Man on Wire in my air mattress in Austin after Alex moved out and left me the essentials (what a tragic movie about the perils of success). Reminded me that it's okay to not achieve fame.
The Thing at the austin film society (this was the last movie I saw in Austin by myself before moving to Illinois). Restored my sense of pleasure at being independent.
Alien: Romulus at AMC in Carbondale (this is the first movie Alex and I watched together since moving to Illinois). Made me think about the masculinity of motherhood.
The Store (a documentary about Neiman Marcus in Dallas in the 1970s. An interesting study on shopping, consumerism, human behavior in a post-war TX). Inspired me to start a project where I take photos of the people and vibes of the Carbondale Mall.
Ladies in waiting (AKA movies on the watch list):
Raging Grace (I want to like write a review about this one soon because it captivates me and writing about it will help me figure out why)
Paris, Texas (something tells me this one will fill my existential cup)

Raging Grace
A struggling Filipina cleaner smuggles her daughter into the house of her new employer, and then discovers that the niece is slowly medicating her uncle to death. Brilliant horror-inspired film which rages against the treatment of immigrants, gracefully.

Honestly I cannot overstate how much seeing Hayden as TCW Anakin changed EVERYTHING. Matt Lanter's Anakin is a frat dude. He wears a backwards baseball hat and says vaguely offensive things without realizing, while being a fundamentally chill and outgoing guy at heart. Hayden's Anakin is... not that. His voice. His expressions. His physical presence. It's off somehow. It's just left of normal. It's completely unremarkable and yet deeply uncanny for reasons you can't quite describe. TCW Anakin was always a flatter, blander portrayal, but I don't think I realized until now what exactly was missing: the serial killer energy. The inarticulable conviction that SOMETHING unhinged is going on behind those eyes.
