The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black 1966
"Paint It Black" is a song by the English rockband the Rolling Stones. A product of the songwriting partnership of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, it is a raga rock song with Indian, Middle Eastern and Eastern European influences and lyrics about grief and loss. Two months after it being released as a non-album single, London Records included it as the opening track on the American version of the band's 1966 studio album Aftermath, though it is not on the original UK release.
Originating from a series of improvisational melodies played by Brian Jones on the sitar, the song features all five members of the band contributing to the final arrangement although only Jagger and Richards were credited as songwriters. In contrast to previous Rolling Stones singles with straightforward rock arrangements, "Paint It Black" has unconventional instrumentation, including a prominent sitar, the Hammond organ and castanets. The song was influential to the burgeoning psychedelic genre as the first chart-topping single to feature the sitar, and widened the instrument's audience.
"Paint It Black" was a major chart success for the Rolling Stones, remaining 11 weeks (including two at number one) on the US Billboard Hot 100, and 10 weeks (including one atop the chart) on the Record Retailer chart in the UK. Upon a reissue in 2007, it reentered the UK Singles Chart for 11 weeks. It was the band's third number-one single in the US and sixth in the UK. The song also topped charts in Canada and the Netherlands.
"Paint It Black" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2018. In 2011, the song was added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of "The Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll". It has seen commercial use in film, video games and other entertainment media, such as Full Metal Jacket (1987), The Devil's Advocate (1997), Wednesday (2022), as well as being used as a plot device in the supernatural horror film Stir of Echoes (1999).
"Paint It Black" received a total of 92,8% yes votes!

Press conference, July 27, 1971. Footage courtesy of AP.
“The war had been going on for a bit, and I had hardly even heard of it, so he fed me a lot of newspaper articles about it. He was saying, “I’m going to have to do something to help. Attract a bit of attention to it, raise a bit of money, much more than I could make doing my own concert, maybe like ten or twenty thousand dollars.’That for him was like doing a big one. And so I got involved. The priority was to attract world attention to what was going on. It wasn’t so much the money because you can feed somebody today and tomorrow they will still be hungry, but if they are getting massacred you’ve got to try and stop that first of all.I said, ‘Okay, I’ll go on the show and I’ll get some other people to come and help. We’ll try and make it into a big show, and maybe we can make a million dollars instead of a few thousand.’ So I got on the telephone trying to round people up. We pinpointed the days which were astrologically good, and we found Madison Square Garden was open on one of those days — 1st August.” - George Harrison, Raga Mala “George Harrison was a very powerful and influential man, and a good friend of Bangladesh. I was in the war, fighting on the front against the Pakistani Army. We had only a one-band radio and that was for getting information from the outside world. After liberation, we came to know that a concert for Bangladesh had been held in Madison Square Garden. That concert acted like a catalyst. The U.S. government did not support Bangladesh, but we got the people’s support, and that concert helped a lot.” - Mahbubul Alam, Los Angeles Post Examiner, December 5, 2013 “George Harrison brought the attention of the world to what was happening in Bangladesh during the independence war because of his concert on behalf of the country in New York in 1971. Without his effort, much of the suffering endured by the Bangladeshi people at the time would have gone unnoticed. Millions were killed, made into refugees or raped.” - Masood Sobhan, BBC, December 11, 2008 “We felt the magnitude of this act of private individuals reached so many people and moved the whole Bangladesh tragedy into the public consciousness before even the governments were willing to face up to it. The world was looking on in stunned horror, not doing anything about it, when Ravi and George drove it into their minds, particularly the young people’s. Why, they even inspired us to get… to work. You should have seen how what they did affected even the people at UNICEF." - Paul B. Edwards, New York Post, June 2, 1972, via UNICEF Archives (x)

Cyno in Persona 5.
Because I did Yusuke in Genshin.
Persona 5/Royal spoilers below.
TW: Canonical staged suicide/attempted murder.
Tumblr media
Cyno, the Justice (upright, as opposed to Akechi's flipped in my headcannon). An Elec, Phys, Ailment user.
Unusual awakening compared to modern Persona Users, more like Persona 1 and 2. He naturally has an overwhelming amount of Magnetite- the Demon Summoning energy used in early MegaTen Games- due to Hermanubis inhabiting his body.
His codename is The General, because Mahamatra doesn't make sense in Persona World.
His Persona manifests as Hermanubis, an Electric Wolf towering above him. His weapon of choice is the spear, and the long ranged gun-like weapon is him throwing his spear at opponents and ripping it back out. Double hit damage.
He joins before Shido's palace, having been searching for the Phantom Thieves to make sure their actions are righteous rather than selfish, and the arrest and subsequent death of their leader only emboldened him, his sixth sense for this type of stuff only helping him for once.
He's an Elec/Phys user like Ryuji, but he attacks 2-5 times with his regular attack and Hermanubis's special skill has a 50/50 chance for attacks to strike twice (GAMBLING GAMBLING).
His regular attacks have a 20% chance to be infused with Elec damage if he's attacked previously by phys or non-elec damage.
He has Ailment skills like Krishna's Venomous and Poisonous Raga, where he buffs allies or debuffs opponents and causes them ailments, called Bad Jokes and Piercing Glare.
Bad Jokes is his Buff skill, which raises Atk, def, spd, or crit for his team and Freezes enemies. Gained from 1st Awakening.
Piercing Glare is his Royal exclusive skill, which lowers Atk, def, spd, or crit and poisons foes.
"I'm Cyno, of Kosei Academies third year. I'm planning on going into law after graduation."
Rank 1: Glare, a 50% to make shadows more amenable to negotiations, and when Cyno joins the team allows him to do negotiations himself.
Rank 3: Blood Hound, doubles the drop rate of rare items when Cyno deals the finishing blow. (Only usable during and after Shido's palace. Absolutely bonkers in Mementos with the Item buffs)
Rank 5: Priesthood, Hermanubis, as an actual priest, can bless items so they either do more damage against chaotic/evil entities, do bonus bless damage, or just do bless damage with weapons.
Rank 8: Keen Eye, raises parties crit chance when Cyno is on the field.
Rank 10: Awakening. Nothing changes about Hermanubis, he just gets a new skill and is slightly taller.
Rank 11: second Awakening. New skill.
Going away gift: The first Genshin TCG card he got as a child.
"Maybe next time we meet, you won't be such a joke-ster. Get it? See, the joke is-"

2024 goals - March progress
I can't claim I focussed on my goals at all this month... Idk I don't really see them as goals either they're just kinda.. things I keep some track of. I know I said this last month but I think April will be more productive because this month for sure spring will feel like it's here (we're still waiting for the trees to turn green, it snowed A Lot last week, just to give you an idea of the situation).
Anyway love and light below are some reflections on my specific goals :)
Get back into a reading routine
I've kept on reading Orlando by Virginia Woolf and I only have 35 pages left. I'm still not consistent at all with it, I read a bit about once a week. I find it so hard to reach for the book instead of my phone, it's annoying because I really do enjoy the book.
Meet friends at least once a month
I've had some good hangouts this month, mostly others that have been reaching out. I'm happy because one of my friends came to my boyfriend's show and was so excited about it and I'm happy they are bonding! In April I have plans to go visit a friend who lives in another city (one of my closest friends who will also meet my boyfriend for the first time) and I'm also planning to reach out to another friend!
Do the damn exercises for my back :(
I did them like.... 2,5 times :( not good at all. And my salsa classes stopped in the middle of the month and I've decided to not continue so it's not looking perfect. Hopefully with the extra light we get now I can have more energy to do them in the evening.
Get better at Portuguese
I signed up for the Portuguese course at uni <3333 Hopefully I'll get in and I'll be able to do that in the fall. I studied in some way 11 days of the month which isn't nothing!! Started doing Clozemaster and I really like it, especially on the writing mode (let's be honest, all my knowledge in Romance languages makes the "choose from these four options" a walk in the park for me). It's super annoying that the free plan only allows you 30 words a day. What I really should do is produce more, write little texts and stuff.
Get my license
We're still waiting for the permit to be able to practice driving with my boyfriend but it's taking a while... I've had 2 lessons though (was supposed to have 3 but one got cancelled). I don't know that I feel that I'm getting any better but I do really have to start studying the theory. It would be nice to talk to my instructor also and ask him what he thinks a reasonable time frame would be for me. In my head I'm seeing myself getting the license during the summer but who knows.
Get back into the habit of going on walks
I have been on some walks this month but more in the sense of I am somewhere and walk a bit instead of taking the closest subway. But I mean now with the change of the hour and the warmer weather I for sure am seeing myself going on more walks!
Go to the theatre more (youth discount my beloved) and also to some museums!
I went to the Maurizio Cattelan exposition at the Modern art museum because my friend had a free entrance with her job. I actually really liked it! Unfortunately I was in a bit of a hurry so I didn't have time to meander or look at the other expositions but I would love to go back! They do the free entry on Friday evenings so I think I might go!
Improve my sleeping schedule
I actually compiled my statistics for this this month (yay!). Slept an average of 7h15 but if we just look at work nights it's 6h20. Not great... It's not something I've paid particular attention to this month but I think I should. I think a goal could be maybe sleep before 1 more often (this month it was 3 times hihihi ma come siamo messi raga).

Gerycz/Powers/Rolin — Activator (12XU)
Tumblr media
youtube
Activator is the third album by percussionist Jason Gerycz, hammered dulcimer-player Jen Powers, and guitarist Matthew J. Rolin. Powers and Rolin are partners as well as collaborators, and often play in entirely improvised duo settings. There is no shortage of underground free folk interplay here. There are also, as they describe them, “song-based structures,” in which melodic themes abound.
“Entrance” begins the recording with a rootsy riff from Rolin with rolled chords from Powers, gradually supplanted by metrically unstable and textural playing from Gerycz. Rolin soon incorporates raga-inflected scales and Gerycz follows with kit-fuls of fills while Powers accentuates upper partials. A gradual slowdown leads into arpeggios and repeated percussion attacks. The original riff returns, but now is savored in the new tempo and then distressed with repeating dissonant intervals from both Rolin and Powers. Bends and harmonics populate the piece’s coda.
“Sun Rays” is a short-form piece filled with chugging beats and a hummable tune. Partway through, it erupts into repeated notes and thunderous drummed punctuations. The balance is a revised version of the opening coruscated with repeated notes. Sometimes, theme-based sections and effusive improvisation are melded into a single piece. The 11-minute long title track is an example of this, with a mid-tempo riff and sustained pitches creating a thematic section that is succeeded by intensely wrought improvisation.
“Ivory '' is a durable long-form piece, probably the best music on Activator. After a melodic guitar intro, repeated intervals from the instrument plus clangorous percussion and thrumming pentatonic patterns glinting on dulcimer blend into a non-Western sounding accumulation. The next section is more placid, pitting a sustained pitch in the percussion against arpeggiations and a dulcimer drone. Then a noise-filled drone is accompanied by overtones and chimes.
The recording closes with “Stasis,” in which a repeated chord progression is treated to placid adornments. Gerycz is a fantastic power drummer, but the hand percussion that he uses here is perfect for the piece’s mood. Its gentle rattling provides a layer of non-metric activity at odds with the solid pulse of the guitar and dulcimer ostinato. “Stasis” ends without fanfare, the music simply stopping at the tail end of a progression. It is an idiosyncratic conclusion, a microcosm of the various twists, turns and surprises on Activator.

Big Sur, June 1968.
“In 1968, I did a documentary film with Ravi Shankar called 'Raga' [parts filmed in Big Sur on June 10 and 11, 1968], and in that film Ravi said, 'Music is the only language I really understand, for I believe in Nada Brahma, meaning "The sound is God."' All music, whether it's deep within in the cosmos, or it becomes more gross in the physical world, is still based on the subtlest manifestations of God. I feel like Ravi does about music, and I want to see that sound.” - George Harrison, Billboard, December 5, 1992 (x)
