Editing a new vlog

The last couple videos I posted were mostly just me talking to the camera about some subject, but the one I'm working on right now is a good old-fashioned Rafi's vlog with friends. Super excited to finish it. I also feel a sort of freedom when it comes to posting on my channel nowadays - some videos are scripted and some videos are just me goofin' around with the homies. They called it Kinks, the ship to hell. 14 year old me was stunned and intrigued by this internet nonsense. 😂

Then I have a Friday night crew and we're currently watching Star Trek TOS and Babylon 5, but taking a break to watch the Witcher spin off atm. My Saturday night crew just finished Season 2 Picard and we're about to start Season 5 of the Crown. Oh we also watch Grey's when there's new ones.

Interview: Night Beats, "Rajan"

Back in August, I went to the great Palp festival in the mountains of Wallis to watch the great Night Beats play! Part of the show was improvised, and the songs of the latest album Rajan sounded amazing live.

Right after the show, I met with Danny Lee Blackwell, the mastermind behind Night Beats, for a short interview. We talked about Rajan, his life in Texas, and what he would tell his younger self from 15 years ago, back when he was just starting Night Beats.

What is your life like when you are not touring? Are you still living in Texas?

Danny Lee Blackwell: Yes. I spend a lot of time digging the ground! There is a really nice oak tree in my backyard. I am raising a garden, I have a couple beds. I also have a piano that I am always trying to tune somehow. It’s a very elusive piano. I also like to play drums, cook food and drink coffee with my friends.

Let us talk a little about your album Rajan. There is song you wrote with Ambrose Kenny-Smith from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Osaka. How was it born and how did you meet?

Oh, Amby! We met in Bristol, at a place called the Hare and Hounds. We had a show together with the Murlocs. We exchanged ideas for the song to be born. I sent him a drum beat, this sample from a Mohammed Rafi song that I really love. I wanted to see what he would do with it. He was really into it – I love his harp playing and he’s a really good lyricist. It was just a beautiful, natural occurrence.

He plays it way better than me. We started to play it live last tour, and when I did, I was always like ‘not quite’. It was different. He’s got the lung capacity! The dream is to have him on stage with us.

You started the Night Beats fifteen years ago. If you could tell something to your younger self back then, what would it be?

Listen to yourself. Trust yourself, listen, record everything. Try and fail, failure is your friend. Eventually, people who contribute to you should understand that everyone is their own thing. When you get together it’s very special, but you have to listen to yourself and follow your feelings all the way through.

Do you wish you had recorded even more things?

Oh, Lord! But I found ways, like tape recorders, cassette recorders. The idea is making a song all the way through, finishing it and moving on to the next one. Treat your brain like a leaky faucet.

What can we expect from Night Beats in the future?

If history teaches me anything, I’d say: the unexpected. Maybe some music. We’re already so lucky to be here, around people who are so kind and fun to work with, and to travel and experience these new ideas together.

And Maks has all kinds of cute little Russian/Ukrainian terms of endearment he uses for Rafi. How do they apologize after an argument? Maksym expresses his regret exactly once then moves on from it, I feel like Raf is a little more emotional about it -- lmk if I'm right or wrong x] What would they be like as parents? Oh, god. I don't know. Maksym hates kids, so, even if Rafael wanted them, I don't think it'd be doable. Maks swears he wasn't ever a child, and they absolutely revolt him and get under his skin. Who is more romantic? Rafael, I feel, has a heart of gold. He's already super sweet, so, I'm gonna go with Raf. But Maks soaks it up, learns a thing or two from Rafael, and treats him in kind as time goes on. What sort of gifts do they get for each other? Maksym steals things from clients for Rafael, usually flashy little accessories he think would look nice on Rafael. Maksym lavishes in the shower, so, he definitely uses up all of the hot water. Who would accidentally set the kitchen on fire whilst cooking? Maybe Maksym, but not because of cooking , because of smoking and setting down his cigarette then forgetting about it.  Who initiates sexy times the most? Both. They're very attracted to one another, it's an equal game. Who is more dominant? I think it depends on the situation, honestly. Sexually, Maksym is very versatile, but he's used to being sort of... told what to do. What would they do if the other one was hurt? Maksym would tend to the injuries with old Ukrainian methods and tinctures, telling Rafael the story for why what was used where. Rafael, I feel, would want to find some of vengeance? Who gives nose/forehead kisses? This is very soft and feels like a definite Rafael thing. What their biggest fight was/will be about: I feel like it's probably something about Maksym trying to get Rafael not to rush into whatever sort of freedom he has and to actually plan things out and think rationally instead of on emotion.

Not me watching Laila Rouass on House of Games and getting mad again thinking about the Henrik sl and how they retconned everything

Hold on a second, Laila Rouass is on House of Games?! I haven't seen it in ages, but I want to watch this week's episodes now, lol.

But yeah, I really don't blame you. Even the slightest thing gets me thinking about the fucking Reyhan storyline again (I was thinking about it just the other day, after the anniversary of that episode where Henrik hired Rafi so Sahira would be forced to stay at Holby). I hate it so much. What a load of sensationalist nonsense, and it's utterly laughable that they pretended it was about "raising awareness" - it was so clearly solely done to villainise poor Sahira and treat Henrik as the real victim of "the evil Shah family". Like... he literally sexually harassed and emotionally abused her! One would have to be outright biased against Sahira and desperate to claim Henrik can do no wrong to say that's not a true statement, because by just about any definition of those terms, what Henrik did falls under it.

Once upon a time, during the original Sahira storyline, the show acknowledged that. It was only in his second stint (yet another reason he either should never have come back, or left after the Gaskell storyline), when they went for the “moral compass Henrik” narrative, that the trauma Sahira went through became too inconvenient for them to acknowledge and so they shoved it in the bin in favour of “super privileged bully Sahira and poor little victim Henrik” (which made absolutely no sense).

I got reminded, recently, of this dialogue from Sahira in S14E26 "Equilibrium" (emphasis mine):

Sahira: "Apparently I'm not focused enough. Apparently, there's no place for 'domestic entanglements' in theatre. 'Singular opportunity', 'singular capability' - I mean, how many times do I have to hear that same old song? What do I have to do to get him off my back? Out of my head?"

How do people watch this stuff and still victim-blame her, or think how Henrik treated her wasn't abusive, or think it was at all okay for the show to rewrite her entire backstory just to make the viewers pity her abuser instead of sympathising with her?!

Gah, sorry. I've had this entire rant building up in my mind for a while but was too scared to post it (because of the fear of getting shouted at or told I hate Henrik - my literal favourite character! - just for pointing out that he's an awful person who should not be romanticised) and this ask just unleashed the ranting. I do apologise.

It's a shame the show didn't bring Sahira back properly. The very, very least she deserved after everything Henrik put her through was an apology from him. I always wanted to see Henrik actually apologise to Sahira and own up to his actions and now he never will... sigh. :/ And the fact that so many people haven't seen old Holby and will now forever think the Reyhan storyline is canon, and that Sahira Shah was Henrik's childhood friend whose dad abused him, is so upsetting to think about. It isn't, and she wasn't! She was his mentee he met in 1995, whom he bullied and harassed. Any trauma as a result of their friendship was caused by him to her, not the other way around. But now people just think she's some terrible abuse-apologist bully when the original Sahira was literally nothing like that (okay, she did refuse to believe an abuse case once, but that was only because she didn't want to believe something so terrible could happen, and she did come to see the truth eventually). She may have been far from perfect, but she and her family did not in any way bully Henrik, or abuse him, or ruin his life. That was all him.
