Daily (okay, probably not daily, but whatever) Fun fact: There is a type of mold only found in the Chernobyl/Chornobyl Exclusion Zone that feeds off Radiation! It's called Radiotropic Mold and is believed to have significantly lessened the amount of time it will take for the area to become habitable than previously believed.
This has been 'Idk what am I doing here have a thing' Thank you for your time.
thank you for sharing! this is super cool and had no idea that it existed before

In 7 species of micromycetes which were isolated from radioactive contaminated areas of Chernobyl NPP zone under exposure of two artificial sources: y-low energy (121Sn) and radiation mix type gamma + beta (137Cs). Two new earlier unknown radioadaptive properties for fungi--radiotropism and radiostimulation were established. The strains, which were isolated from clean areas, did not have such features. All investigated strains, which have shown positive radiotropism at the same time, have shown stimulation of conidia germination and of length of the emergent hyphum under exposure to one of sources of radiation. It was shown that micro fungi having radioadaptive properties, the adaptive response to high (100-1000 Gy) ionizing radiation doses was found that is evidence of that these strains have high radio resistance level. Nevertheless fungal strains have shown varied response to presence of ionizing radiation depending on its type and absorbed dose.

scientists are studying radiotropic fungi at the international space station to see if it can be used as radiation shielding for deep space travel missions! Hypothetically an 8” layer of this fungi would be a self-sustaining, self-replicating shield!
The force field was mushrooms all along.

A badgergirl engineer is carrying out tests on a radiotropic slimegirl to see if she (and her many wives) can be part of the shielding of a small interplanet freighter. Badgergirl needs to find out if slimegirl is compressible enough that she won’t cause water hammer while she cycles through the shielding and coolant system. So far the results are promising, although slimegirl is starting to have too much fun schlurmping through the test equipment to get any more useful readings.

I actually was looking into it again recently and they’re apparently going to try and use the melanin that allows the fungi to be radiotropic to make a “space safe sunscreen” but I didn’t get too far into that article. I like your idea of mushroom spacesuits better 😂
Was inspired by the biosuites the aliens from the movie Independence Day wore.
Except we'll probably end up looking more like a big mushroom, cap and all.

@radiotropism
you first g-man. jacket doesn't count.
(edit: gordon's sign is misleading, it's the beginning of "No" instead of the end. I gotta work more on drawing hands.)
gordon freeman and alyx vance stave off being put back in stasis by getting matching shirts reading "throw me to the cold void of space i'll come back pregnant" and g-man is too uncomfortable to approach them

An Orbit, part of the Being Radiotropic series Tega Brain
Artist Statement:
We are radiotropes. Just as other lifeforms orientate themselves in response to the sun's radiation, many contemporary human behaviours are shaped by electromagnetic landscapes and signal topographies. We prepare for the quiet zone of the subway and notice how data speeds vary as we move between networks and across geographies.
Being Radiotropic is a series of eccentric wireless routers that explore this sensitivity and that asks how we might otherwise design our wireless infrastructures.
Each router provides an open wireless network that misbehaves and functions in unexpected and eccentric ways. Could our radiotropism be leveraged to shift our perceptions of other lifeforms and non-human systems? An Orbit An Orbit is a router that couples signal strength with moon phase. For one day per month it provides maximum wifi signal, and for one day a month it provides no network at all. Between these points the signal waxes and wanes, oscillating over a 28 day period.

I had an errant thought while beginning to nod off that later turned into a full-on sleep apnea dream, in which humanity had definitively confirmed bacterial life on any number of exoplanets... ...but it turned out that all of that life had hitched a ride on countless generations of garbage that we had all decided to jettison into space rather than leaving it on the Earth or clogging up its orbit. I wish that I had been cogent enough to wish into being some sort of silver lining, some sort of epilogue if like the trash rockets had accidentally acted as generation ships for microscopic life, life that could later thrive and flourish well outside of human awareness and get on well enough without us someplace else. But I think, instead, I continued to feel the logical extension of the dread that I've been feeling for decades, now: dread that not only could we wipe out all life on Earth and prevent anything else from ever growing, again, in addition to wiping out ourselves, but that our devil-may-care attitude might irrevocably pollute other planets prior to having their time to shine. If for nothing else, I root for the radiotropic fungi, and the mushrooms and moth larvae that eat plastic, and any number of organisms that might persist after us.
