Oh my god, did you see the HSM demonises femininity video. The author sayd that because Sharpay is the villain and she wears pink and is girly, this is clearly demonising girliness. And all the comments were whining about how oppressed they were for liking Sharpay (I promise they weren't, I was 9 when HSM came out, Sharpay was EVERYONE'S favourite.
The author also rebutted my comment that Gabriella and Taylor are also girly af by saying they don't wear pink (they do, and Sharpay doesn't only wear pink either) and that Taylor isnt as girly because she I WISH I WAS MAKING THIS UP wears a lot of headbands. Never mind Monique Colman had to wear those because the hair dep, didn't know how to style black hair and just gave her shit wigs.
And i like Sharpay, she's a fun character. But she's not the villain because she's feminine. She's the villain because she's a bully (Kelsi) , Stalker (Troy) and sabotaged in every film, including to her own brother.

As it happens, I'm trying to put a moratorium on watching video essays I know will only aggravate me, especially the spate of several about ~demonizing femininity~ after a certain one about the non-issue of "nlog" in period pieces melted what braincells 2023 has spared as I spent my finite minutes on this earth watching a woman I'm pretty sure would've called me slurs in high school shriek barely-disguised reactionary garbage for forty minutes or so over the existence of masculine presentation because the consequence of a decade of ~choice feminism~ is women who think the central struggle for gender equality is no one being allowed to criticize their fantasies unquestioning adherence to gender expectations but couch it in progressive lingo. See: the morons who threw a tantrum over Rachel Zegler saying Snow White's story evolves beyond being rescued by a prince because women's narratives were limited in the 30s compared to now (a completely anodyne and accurate statement that created a harrasment campaign horseshoe between racist alt-right chuds and liberal feminists because god forbid you question the potent feminism of their dollies). See also: the pathetic whining about a lack of heterosexual romance or an extremely conventionally feminine, thin and usually white female character wearing pants. However, I fully welcome the opportunity to rant about it lol, because I feel very strongly that "unapologetic femininity" is one of the biggest jokes/psyops/reactionary disguised as progressive movements so long as it refers to people of whom society demands femininity as a performance (chiefly, cis women - there are actually people discouraged/disallowed by cisheteronormative patriarchal society from being feminine, and for whom that phrase actually means something lol). I constantly say this as a super feminine queer woman (literally, my room and most of my clothes are pink, frilly, and floral): femininity is derided, but it is also imposed.
I was never that into High School Musical even as a kid, but the fact that a conventionally feminine character is treated by 'masculine' by these dummies because she isn't hyperfeminine is utterly unsurprising. 'NLOG' as a whole might have started as a critique of female characters who fit a certain male fantasy of internalizing misogyny and catering to certain ideals of being low-maintenance, but at this point as I've previously said, it's being used in place of homophobic slurs for girls and women, both real and fictional, who aren't hyperfeminine, who don't prioritize male attention, or who simply, for one reason or another, feel alienated from 'proper' girlhood/womanhood. The 'mean girl' bully stereotype exists, be it in HSM, Heathers, Mean Girls, or what have you, for a reason. Bullying frequently occurs along the lines of failing at performing your assigned gender 'correctly'. Just as male bullies in media frequently pick their targets due to perceived failures of masculinity, perceived failures of femininity are an extremely common justification for social ostracism and punishment, because that's how gender conformity is socially enforced. This overlaps with these ideals being based in concepts of class, race, and homophobia/transphobia etc, which are simply other facets of the hierarchy. The "demonized femininity" boogeyman we've seen discussed in the last few years genuinely feels like a conservative psyop of some kind if I didn't see so many people otherwise fall for it hook, line, and sinker, because the presupposition that gender nonconformity is rewarded - particularly in the wake of the recent spate of extreme transphobic and homophobic backlash - is laughable.

West Side Story (2021)
4½ ud af 5 ulovlige brandtrapper
Jeg har tilbragt det meste af dagen i selskab med West Side Story, først Steven Spielbergs nye version (IMAX) og bagefter Robert Wise-versionen fra 1961 (Filmstriben). Begge film er mesterværker, og hvis jeg skal vælge, vinder Spielberg, mest fordi hans udgave er en rigtig film med stort F, og Wises version er filmatiseret teater. Spielberg har skruet ned for badutspringeriet eller i hvert fået det ind i mere naturlige rammer, og hans persontegninger er mere nuancerede og kameraarbejdet og klipningen mere dynamisk. Castingen er også på mange måder bedre i den nye version. Det er ægte latinoer, som spiller puertoricanere, ikke bare sminkede hvide. Som 14-årig var jeg vildt forelsket i Natalie Wood, og nu har jeg i en moden alder tabt mit hjerte til filmdebutanten Rachel Zegler, som er en tier på nuttethedsskalaen og tilmed synger vidunderligt uden hjælp. Jeg indrømmer nødtvungent, at jeg fik kuldegysninger og tårer i øjnene, da hun og Ansel Elgort istemte "Tonight". Næsten alt ved Spielbergs film er mere eller mindre perfekt, men der er dog en enkelt ting, der generer mig: At duetten "somewhere" mellem Tony og Maria nu er lagt i munden på Rita Moreno, der spillede Anita i 1961, men nu som en slags hyldest optræder som Tonys arbejdsgiver Valentina (der afløser Doc fra Wise-versionen). Det er bestemt ikke nogen katastrofe, men dog efter min mening en faux pas. Den sang tilhører Tony og Maria! Der er flere ændringer: "Cool" synges nu af Tony, ikke af Ice, og machoen Chino er nu (uforståeligt) gjort til en spagfærdig, bebrillet bogholder, der ikke desto mindre overtager ledelsen af banden efter Bernardos død og til sidst skyder Tony.
En sidste ting, jeg lige vil nævne, er tekstningen. Den er tåkrummende dårlig i 1961-versionen på Filmstriben, men nogenlunde i orden i den nye. Dog var "Jesus wept!" (et mildt bandeord a la "For pokker" eller "Hold da ferie") oversat med "Jesus græd", hvilket ikke giver nogen mening, og på dansk er en "kaukasier" en person fra Kaukasus, ikke en etnisk hvid person som på engelsk.

Regizat de Steven Spielberg, bazat pe un scenariu semnat de Tony Kushner, câștigător al premiului Pulitzer, filmul „West Side Story / Poveste din cartierul de vest” spune povestea clasică a rivalităților acerbe și a iubirii tinere din New York-ul anilor (19)50, reluând o temă foarte populară care a generat fenomenul musical-urilor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oq9ecWTZci0 Această peliculă le readuce pe marele ecran pe îndrăgitele vedete Ansel Elgort (Tony), Ariana DeBose (Anita), David Alvarez (Bernardo), Mike Faist (Riff), Brian d’Arcy James (Ofițer Krupke), Corey Stoll (locotenentul Schrank), Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino), având-o pe Rita Moreno (în rolul Valentinei, care deține magazinul din colț în care lucrează Tony), și o prezintă pe Rachel Zegler (María). Moreno este, de asemenea, unul dintre producătorii executivi ai filmului.

Filmul „West Side Story / Poveste din cartierul de vest” a fost adaptat pentru marele ecran plecând de la seria originală marca Broadway, din 1957. Cu o coregrafie originală semnată de Jerome Robbins, muzică creată de Leonard Bernstein, pe versuri de Stephen Sondheim, „West Side Story / Poveste din cartierul de vest” este produs de Studiourile 20th Century, parte a grupului Walt Disney. Semnătura neașteptată a unui regizor celebru „Acest film este probabil cel mai greu din cariera mea, fiind, fără îndoială, cea mai mare partitură scrisă vreodată în teatru”, spune Steven Spielberg.

„Este foarte intimidant să iei o capodoperă și să o refaci din altă perspectivă, fără a compromite integritatea ei. Cred că poveștile grozave ar trebui spuse iar și iar, mai ales pentru a reflecta diferite perspective și momente în timp. Îmi place filmul original realizat de Robert Wise cu Jerome Robbins. Wise mi-a fost un prieten apropiat mulți ani și am vorbit cu el foarte mult despre film. Iar Walter Mirisch, care a produs filmul „West Side Story” , este un alt prieten drag care mi-a spus tot felul de povești grozave despre realizarea filmului”, mai spune regizorul. Apoi adaugă: „Ceea ce este minunat la această poveste este că, indiferent cât de mult s-ar schimba lumea din jurul nostru, lecțiile și perspectivele pe care ni le oferă sunt aceleași. Este o intamplare care a captivat publicul zeci de ani, nu este doar o poveste de dragoste, ci și o operă semnificativă din punct de vedere cultural, cu o premisă importantă, și anume că dragostea transcende prejudecățile și intoleranța, premisă care nu și-a pierdut relevanța în timp”. O poveste încărcată de istorie Muzicalul „West Side Story” este mult mai mult decât un celebru film clasic și o producție istorică, importantă pe Broadway. Este un simbol cultural american, iubit de un larg public internațional; de la lansarea pe Broadway, în 1957, a fost regândit și recreat continuu în diverse forme și în cele mai neașteptate locuri din lume. Spielberg subliniază: „În teatru, «West Side Story / Poveste din cartierul de vest» a fost jucat în toată lumea, de la licee, la teatre comunitare. O parte din puterea acestei producții constă în capacitatea sa de a fi remontată și reimaginată în nenumărate feluri.” „West Side Story” – creat de patru genii incontestabile, regizorul și coregraful Jerome Robbins, compozitorul Leonard Bernstein, textierul Stephen Sondheim și dramaturgul Arthur Laurents – a avut premiera pe Broadway, pe 26 septembrie 1957, la Winter Garden Theatre și având apoi nu mai puțin de 732 de reprezentații. Spectacolul a cunoscut o perioadă lungă de gestație. Robbins a conceput pentru prima dată un astfel de musical în 1949, lucrând cu un scenariu pe care el și Bernstein l-au schițat și care se referea la conflictul dintre o familie irlandeză catolică și o familie evreiască care trăiește în Lower East Side. În 1955, după o întâlnire cu Laurents, dramaturgul și scenaristul a prezentat un scenariu cu două bande de adolescenți din New York, una dintre ele fiind formată din portoricani proaspăt sosiți în oraș și cealaltă din descendenți ai clasei muncitoare desprinse din rândul imigranților europeni. Proiectul a prins contur, deși finanțarea nu a fost ușor de obținut, iar repetițiile au început în iulie 1957, iar spectacolul a putut fi lansat la scurt timp. Potrivit lui Alexander Bernstein, fiul celebrului compozitor, spectacolul nu a fost însă un hit uriaș. „Succesul a venit când a apărut filmul trei ani și jumătate mai târziu.” Filmul lui Robert Wise-Jerome Robbins din 1961 fost un succes enorm. A câștigat zece premii Oscar și a marcat începutul apariției musicalului ca fenomen cultural. Un nou film, o voce diferită După ce a terminat ultimul său film „The Post”, Spielberg a simțit că este momentul potrivit să se angajeze într-un proiect ca „West Side Story”. Deși era încă în faza de planificare, viziunea regizorului a fost mai mult decât coerentă: o perspectivă proaspătă, originală, unică asupra materialului. „Trebuia să ne descoperim vocea pentru ca noul film să fie același, dar complet diferit”, spune Spielberg. Acțiunea noului film are loc în vara anului 1957 pe străzile cartierelor adiacente Upper West Side, Lincoln Square și San Juan Hill. Împreună, cartierele cuprind zona de la vest de Broadway, de la West 60th Street la West 70th Street până la marginea orașului, la râul Hudson. La începutul anilor 1950, Robert Moses – comisarul pentru Lucrări Publice din New York – a dărâmat întreaga porțiune de teren pentru construcția Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts și a Universității Fordham, printre alte proiecte. La acea vreme, Lincoln Square era populată de descendenții imigranților europeni, iar municipalitatea i-a relocat pe locuitorii zonei. Mutarea lor formează un element crucial pentru scenariul lui Kushner. El descrie zona de la începutul filmului ca „un vast pustiu de moloz, locuințe demolate și parțial demolate, străbătute de străzi, până la râul Hudson”. În povestirea sa, Kushner înfățișează fiecare personaj din poveste ca fiind multidimensional, cu trăiri și probleme individuale care îi motivează acțiunile. Kushner spune: „Povestea este atât de amplă, fiind și politică, dar în esență este cât se poate de privată și de personală - doi tineri se îndrăgostesc înverșunat, dar dragostea care înflorește între ei este ucisă de marea lume politică din jurul lor. Povestea este un avertisment: rasismul și sărăcia sunt antiteza democrației și, dacă nu sunt respinse, vor atomiza legăturile care ne țin împreună ca societate. Dragostea este cu siguranță răspunsul, iubirea poate transforma lumea, poate transforma realitatea răuvoitoare, dar dragostea nu rezolvă tot, sau cel puțin nu toate amenințările în momentul imediat. Într-un context de ură, dragostea este în pericol. Și asta este tragic, asta este tragedia din «West Side Story»”. Mergând și mai departe, Spielberg și Kushner au reconceput cu totul un personaj – amabilul Doc – transformându-l în văduva sa, o femeie portoricană care se împrietenește cu tânărul Tony. Încă de la început, rolul a fost destinat Ritei Moreno, care s-a alăturat proiectului și ca producător executiv. Iar Spielberg a fost extrem de entuziasmat de scenariul lui Kushner. Kushner spune: „Povestea de fundal a Valentinei are 25 de pagini. Este ca un mic roman, începând cu viața ei timpurie în Puerto Rico și include și felul în care Tony a ajuns să locuiască în subsolul farmaciei ei. Se întinde pe prima jumătate a secolului al XX-lea. În timp ce îl scriam, mi-am imaginat că mă uit la o miniserie epică cu Rita Moreno în rol principal.” „Ceea ce am vrut să facem a fost practic să reinventăm, să explorăm personajele mult mai profund, să le oferim motive pentru a fi ceea ce sunt”, spune Spielberg. „De exemplu, când îl întâlnim pe Tony, tocmai a ieșit din închisoare. L-am schimbat chiar de la începutul filmului nostru.”
