"Hey, are you all up for an interview?"
The girl stared down at the bobbing heads in the water, their playing coming to a stop as they stare up at her. So, she continues.
"I mean it's not like I have much else to do, so why not?"
The humanoids said nothing, mostly just squinting at her. The seemingly youngest one, a little girl, was reaching out to her while one of the older ones held her back. She even made a biting and grabbing motion while the adult shook their head at her. She quickly stopped, before looking up at Rachel.
The reporter looked back, and for half of a minute, there was a silence full of contemplation from both sides.
But in all of a sudden, the merfolk sank back down into the sea, creating big ripples near the boat in a motion similar to thrashing.
The thrashing went on for a short while, and Rachel was confused. She then felt a cold hand touch her shoulder as she watched the commotion. She jerked up and looked to the side, seeing one of her companions.
"Come on Rachel, just don't bother." the ghost said, before tugging lightly on her hand. "You can try again later, if you wanna interview them. Just leave them for now."
"No, no- It'll be quick, I promise.", Rachel responded, moving her hand away from the specter's cold grasp.
Let me talk to them, please?", the girl begged. Her voice sounded calm, but her looks betrayed her demeanor.
The ghost sighed. "Okay, whatever you say.", she says, and silently leaves Rachel to the fishes.
Left alone with her thoughts and the water wildly thrashing, the environment gets more quiet. Perhaps a little cold, if it weren't for the sun shining and blazing down on her body. A thought pops up in her mind as she looks down.
...I should lean in closer.
And so she did, tilting her head downwards onto the waves below.
Closer.
It wasn't just her head turned downwards, but her shoulders now.
Closer. I need to see what's going on.
She was leaning her full body onto the boat's guardrails, and as she did, she could make up the waters calming for a moment and-
SPLASH!
One of the humanoids had leapt out of the water, reaching towards her in an upward pounce. His teeth and claws were bared, and he looked very determined on getting Rachel in this strike. Luckilly for Rachel, she had pulled her body backwards before the creature could grab ahold of her. And as quickly as this attack started, it had ended as the merman swiftly fell back headfirst into the water.
After this sudden moment, Rachel leaned again but from a safer distance. "Whoah, hey, what the fuck?"
The fishman poked his head out of the water. "Sorry, force of habit.", He said with a laugh. He then continued. "You know... if you weren't given that curse, me and my buds right here would've torn you to shreds by now."
Rachel nodded awkwardly. "Okay... uhm.. thanks. For letting me know. Uhh... on another topic. are you up for the interview then?"
"Yeah, sure, why not?"

Marcus and Rachel - "A 'New' Experience"
"...I guess you can try it. Just this once. I'll let you hold the camera."
- Famous last words from Rachel Soledad, the last girl to ever grace the planet. For in a manner of minutes, she will be losing her breath...
Out of laughter. And lots of it.
You see, her and her newfound... (ally? friend?) companion Marcus have come across the abandoned wastes of what used to be called a 'store', and she figured that they better grab what they could while they still can. Besides, it's not like she'll have to pay. As they're looking at the shelves that will never be restocked, Rachel comes across some familiar objects.
Cameras. Handheld ones.
Of course, she's had a lot of experience with them considering her worst regret of a job in the media industry. Knowing this, the sight of them gave her an idea.
"We can use these to record anything that we can.", the girl said, filling her bag with a few boxes of cameras.
The other wanderer shrugged, stocking a grocery cart with random objects he liked, mainly snacks.
Rachel took one camera, testing it out if it's still working somehow.
It is. Perfect.
She focused the camera on her companion, and called out to him.
"Marc, check this out!"
The old friend stranger looked back at her, tilting his head. He seemed a little more interested with it now.
Rachel took a few shots with the device, a few panning shots and then some others. After the random takes she inspected the videos she made. At this point the boy was standing right next to her, peering at the videos.
She takes notice, looking over at him. "Ah, do you... want to try?"
She gets a nod from him, and he reaches his hand out.
She hands it over carefully with a small smile. "...I guess you can try it. Just this once. I'll let you hold the camera. Go on, take videos of anything that interests you."
She watched as he tried to get the camera to record, fumbling with it like how one of her friends would fumble a conversation. Ah, who was it again? Pretty sure it was Kevin. She found those times quite endearing.
After a minute of just watching, she decided to step in and help him. "It's... obvious you haven't done this before. Here. Let me help you on that."
After getting the camera to work, her companion started to practically run around, camera in hand. She could tell that he was having fun with it, and he also looked like he was a natural.
After half an hour of running around, the boy returned, camera in hand. It looked pretty banged up, as if it's seen better days. But it was functional, it worked. The same could likely be said about the both of them.
He hands them off to Rachel, and she looked at the videos he took.
The contents of them caused a small smile to form on her face, albeit just a slight twitch of her muscles.
They had videos of random things. Shiny objects. The squeaky wheels of the cart he was using. Some remaining semblances of life on the area. A few cats, some dogs. Even the chirping of the birds that she'd normally call incessant if they didn't make her relieved to see a living thing.
She even saw him try to chase one of them.
She's trying, fighting for her life not to laugh.
There also was one clip of the traveller trying to... sniff the camera? Well, he was inspecting it. Also tossing it around. Guess she found out why it looked like that.
And with that, she started to laugh. The other traveller seemed confused, but slightly chuckled when he saw what she was laughing at.
Eventually, they both went into a hysterical, giggling fit. Ah, he was new to this after all.

Marcus and Rachel - Wrong Lessons Learned
(TWW JUMPSCARE-)
They're leaving now. The Storyteller, Death, had told them another story, 'Sea Siren.' Marcus (Although a part of him keeps sayings its name is Amon. Maybe it is. But its companion calls it Marcus so that's the name it shall go by.) still doesn't fully understand why he keeps telling them these tales. But it's a nice break from everything else so he can't complain.
"What did you think of the story?" His companio- Rachel's voice interrupts the relative silence. He blinks. Oh, there's lessons isn't there? He doesn't understand what he means by lessons though. They are not being taught anything, no new skills to help them, so what lessons are there?
Shes staring at him, he's meant to respond. Because it is human, that is what humans do, they respond when asked questions. But it is not human. Does it really need to respond?
"Was... sad." The story was sad. It was meant to be so he will say it was sad.
More silence, she nods but looks like she wants to say something. He waits. She does not speak. Perhaps he's meant to say more but his throat already hurts from the few words he's already spoken.
"I... think I got his lesson." Ah so he isn't meant to say more. "Maybe you do too."
He does not.

Jeremy and Rachel
But in the pokémon AU :>
"After the battles and classes today, let's meet up. It's important."
"Yeah, okay Rach. I'll be available."
"Awesome! I'll be by the cafe. Oh, and please tell the others."
That was the conversation they made hours ago. And yet, there was still no sign of Jeremy anywhere. Rachel found it weird, Jeremy always went through with the promises he made. Well, the promises he made to her, anyway. He was a reliable guy, and he's not the type to ditch anyone last second... right?
The champion anxiously stirred the cup of coffee with the spoon in her hand. The cream had already dissolved by this point, both by the formerly warm coffee and her stirring of it. It's gotten cold about an hour or two ago, but she doesn't dare to take a sip just yet.
Her garchomp, on the other hand, had other plans. He'd already ordered his 10th serving of pancakes, and was chowing down on it like it would be his last meal. Rachel glanced over at him and thought:
Thank Arceus, the pancakes have free refills. If it weren't, I wouldn't wanna know what might happen to my wallet...
Her train of thought got disrupted when a waitress approached the table.
"Hello miss, would you like to order something as well?", she asked, waiting politely but eagerly for an answer.
Rachel shook her head. "Oh, no, I'll pass. I'm... waiting for someone.", she replied. The waitress nodded her head, walking off to another table.
Rachel pulled out her phone, checking for any updates from her friends. So far and... radio silence. They didn't even see her newer messages. To her, it was getting concerning.
What was going on? Why haven't they showed up at all yet?
She texted a mutual friend, asking them if they'd seen them anywhere.
"Hey, have you seen any of the guys anywhere after classes? I've tried contacting them and they aren't answering."
"No, not really."
"Not even on the street? Not even online?"
"Nope."
She sighed, before asking another friend, and then another. They all answered something similar, about not having talked or even seen any of them around.
This was starting to alarm her more and more as time passed. She wasn't sure what was going on, and why they'd just go radio silent out of nowhere.
Jeremy wasn't like this. He wouldn't do this. None of them would. These guys, they're the loudest sons of a gun I've ever met. Going radio silent isn't like them. Not at all.
Something must've happened. Either that or I'm just blowing this waaay out of proportion.
...Maybe I am. Maybe I am. I should just keep waiting, maybe it isn't too serious. Maybe these were all just coincidences.
An hour passes, and Rachel's concern is at its peak. She stood up from her seat and was about to pay and leave to find them herself when-
The bells of the cafe entrance door ring, and a few familiar voices fill the cafe, the same familiar banter like always. It was the school's league club's Elite Four. Her friends, the people she's been waiting for.
Samuel and Roderick were busy bickering slightly, while Kevin kept to himself, looking tired.
And as always, Jeremy was trying to be the mediator.
She took a sigh of relief, before she called out to Jeremy, trying to sound less worried than she actually was.
"Hehe, it took you long enough. I was... starting to get really scared. Where have you been?"
Jeremy shrugged, sighing. He was about to explain when he was interrupted by the banter escalating to an argument. He turns his head, glancing at Roderick and Samuel's and sighing.
"I WAS WATCHING OVER MY SISTER, BY THE WAY!"
"Oh yeah? How did she manage to climb the tropius then?!"
"I don't know! DON'T BE MAD AT ME FOR THAT!"
"WHY WOULDN'T I BE MAD, SHE COULD'VE HAD MORE THAN A FEW BRUISES IF KEVIN DIDN'T CATCH HER!"
Jeremy then looks back at Rachel. "We had to delay a little because of that. Had to take Rod's sis to the clinic."
"Oh...", Rachel exclaimed, slightly feeling embarassed now. "I'm... sorry. Is she fine?"
"Yeah, she's okay. Only got shaken and had some mild bruises and scratches from the grass and rocks. She'll be fine."
Rachel sighed in relief. "Oh, phew."
"'C'mon, this is Rod's sister we're talking about. His family's... a tough bunch. I'm sure she'll be okay.", Jeremy chuckled.
Rachel smiled as well. She's always admired Jeremy's optimism.
How was he able to do it? How was he able to look at the good in anything and everything? I should probably ask that to him sometime, as well as other questions.
"Uh, but on another topic, you wanted to talk to us about something, right?", Jeremy asked, before gesturing to the others to quiet down. They obliged, making quick and slightly disgruntled apologies to each other.
"Oh, of course!", Rachel snapped her fingers, remembering why she wanted to talk to them in the first place. "But first, you guys should sit down. Grab something to eat."
She then ushered them to the table, and watched as the boys took a seat before she did. The waitress from earlier had returned, taking their orders.
As the boys wait for the orders to arrive, Rachel took a sip of the coffee she'd been stirring for a while before speaking.
"So I've brought you guys here for something really important.
It's... about the league club."
Jeremy rested his head on his hand, his elbow placed down on the table beside his plate. "Hm? What about it?"
Rachel sighed. "Well, Miss Wong just talked to me today. Oh, that Miss Adelaide, she's the only one that cares for it these days, and she's only a volunteer...
anyway, she gave me a heads up that the faculty's losing interest in the league club. They might give even less money than before. And if this keeps going at this rate...
We might even have to close the club. For good. I... understand that we could always fund it out of pocket, but uhm... we're just students, we can only do so much."
Those words made the group stunned.
Roderick's mouth slightly went open in shock, and he was stunned into a rare silence.
Kevin's constant anxious expression worsened, and his hands stiffened into fists.
Samuel looked a twinge more worried despite keeping his composure, and his eyes started looking anywhere but to Rachel.
"Huh? Why would they do that?", Jeremy asked, before continuing, a small smile returning on his face as if to reassure. "We should think of a way to keep them interested. This can't be the way the league ends."
Rachel nods at Jeremy, before looking back at the group. "That's why I called you four here. As the ones sort of in charge of this, I think we really need to talk about how to get them interested."
Sam's attention returned to the group, and he made a suggestion. "I'm thinking we should probably do what we did last time. It worked well for a long while."
Though the others seemed confused, Jeremy caught up with what the Ice Trainer said. "Oh, right. We could always do that!"
Rach looked at Jay and Sam. "Huh? Uhh... What do you guys mean by that..?" The other two looked at them as well.
Samuel nudged Jeremy, and he began to explain. "You guys do remember what we did last time, right? You know, adding a gimmick. We can do that again."
"Heh, good idea. What gimmick do we do though? It's not like we can do the dangerous shit like megas. And we can't do teras, we already have that.", Roderick asked.
A few seconds of silence pass, and Rachel seemed to smile as she came up with an idea. "We can do double battles! Uhhh, well... like an optional thing people can do."
This suggestion seemed to be met with a lot of interest, as the group unanimously agreed with her. Even the introvert of the group, Kevin, was not too opposed to the idea.
Rachel then pulled out a notebook from her bag, starting to write down notes for the plan. "Alright, we should assign who would be partnered up with who. I'll let you guys talk it out over the week, and you can just text me about your decision.
But as for me..."
Rachel locked eyes with Jeremy.
"I've made my choice.", she says, with a grin.
Jeremy looked slightly embarassed, but he couldn't help but be flattered. "...Me?"
Rachel nods her head, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Well, yeah. I mean, you've been... really helpful when it comes to keeping the club up, and I... couldn't think of anyone else that I'd be glad to do doubles with."
Jeremy's face started to flush a bit, as he felt even more flattered and embarassed at the same time. "Oh... thank. you... I'm fine with that. I won't let you down.", he says, nodding quickly.
Rachel smiles. "Heheh... I know you won't."
I know you, and you'd never let anyone down... right?

Augusnippets Day 10
execution/fake execution/begging for mercy
fandom: cabin tales prequel to day 8 TW: torture, electrocution, forced to watch, unethical human experimentation, major character death word count: 496 @augusnippets
Rachel's hands had an iron grip around her mouth. The dry, frigid basement air stung at her wide eyes. Her knees buckled, a chill coursing through her entire body.
None of her discomforts compared to what she just witnessed.
“Wha… What the hell?” she squeaked, stepping back from the sight displayed through thick, tinted glass.
Roderick. Kevin. Sam. Jeremy. All writhing in agony from a shock Rachel feared would kill them – perhaps should've killed them. Though she couldn't see Sam or Jeremy well from the window's position, she assumed they had similar, blistering burns around their wrists, upper arms, ankles and neck.
“Hm, thought they would've figured out the premise sooner,” Mr. Barnett sighed.
“Y-you didn't tell them!?” Rachel gasped.
“The idea was to control for more variables than prior attempts at this.” Mr. Barnett quirked an eyebrow. “If they were told this is a prisoner's dilemma, they could've strategized beforehand, sullying the results. If you want to really test humans’ trust in each other, such things must be taken into account.”
“But this – then this is kidnapping! It's illegal!”
“You say that like some of the most valuable research into human behavior isn't also ethically or legally dubious. Does the name MK Ultra ring a bell?”
Rachel feared her throat would completely close up. Her mind raced, desperately trying to cut through the boys' resumed bickering to find a way out. For herself, and for them.
“But… But what the hell are you going to do with the results, then?” Rachel tried with a nervous, tense smile. “I-if what happens here goes public, you'll be arrested! S-so, we should just get them out of here and try-”
“Oh, Rachel,” Mr. Barnett cooed, resting an elbow against the glass with a small, chilling smile. “This isn't about fame, prestige, academic accolades. This…” Mr. Barnett beamed as he started the timer again. Rachel thought her heart would stop from the sheer shock of Kevin's frantic, terrified screams. “This is about knowledge. The truth!”
“Wha..? Who cares about that!” Rachel snapped, voice rasping from encroaching tears. “You can't do this to people!”
“Too late now.” Mr. Barnett shrugged. “I can't do anything now that the timer's started. It's up to them.”
Them…
Rachel snapped her attention to the window, beating against the unwavering glass with all her might.
“GUYS!” she screamed. “DON'T VOTE! DON’T PRESS ANYTHING! PLEASE!” Any further words were silenced as she watched Kevin and Roderick press the dials. “Oh fuck…” she whimpered. “Oh fuck, there's gotta be something, there's gotta-”
“Well! It's about time they figured it out.” Mr. Barnett clasped his hands in pride.
“No, NO! STOP!” Rachel desperately grasped Mr. Barnett's shoulders. Just as she did so, her ears rang from the booming screech of arcing electricity. “YOU'RE KILLING THEM!”
“Incorrect,” Mr. Barnett calmly chided, pointing behind Rachel. “They're killing him.”
At Mr. Barnett's words, the foulest stench Rachel had ever encountered stung at her nose.
Burning meat mixed with ozone.

Augusnippets Day 8
reunion/found family/friends
fandom: cabin tales TW: aftermath of torture, guilt, implied exes to lovers word count: 551 @augusnippets summary: Rachel needed one more letter of recommendation for her college application: a letter her history teacher, Mr Barnett, was happy to provide in exchange for a favor. For his doctorate in sociology, he planned a modified version of the prisoner's dilemma to truly test humanity's trust in each other, a test which needed volunteers. Rachel's first thought was her ex-boyfriend Jeremy and his group of friends - a well-known, unbreakable clique. She had no idea what she signed them up for.
No matter how many breathing exercises Amber showed her, how many times the doctor assured her of the boys' continued improvement, or how many reminders the nurses gave about Jeremy specifically asking to see her, Rachel couldn't shake the feeling of walking into an execution.
None of them understand. They weren't the ones who encouraged Mr. Barnett's experiment. I… I did.
One more vain attempt to quell her nerves with a deep breath, then the door squeaked open.
Seeing Jeremy not only awake, but smiling at her, made her guilt even more crushing.
“Rachel!” Jeremy beamed; much as he could with a third of his face bandaged up. “Long time, no see.”
“Not that long, really…” Rachel took step after shameful step until she stood beside the hospital bed.
“Shit, yeah… It's kinda hard to tell how long I've been here.” Jeremy sheepishly shrugged. “I've been out of it on… I don't know, horse tranquilizers or something, for a while. Good news is that I'm better enough for them to have finally lowered the dosage.”
“Yeah…” Rachel croaked. Jeremy's bright expression faltered.
“Um… Is something wrong? Like, besides the obvious.” Through bandages and fading Lichtenberg burns creeping up his neck, a faint redness dusted his cheeks. “I, uh, thought seeing how I've recovered might… I don't know, bring you some peace of mind?”
“I-It helps a little…” Rachel’s eyes shut as she willed her tears not to fall.
“But?”
“But I… Fuck, Jay, this is all my fault!” Rachel’s voice cracked as the dam burst. “I-if I hadn't agreed to help Barnett with his s-stupid experiment and volunteered you guys-”
“Oh, Rachel…” Jeremy sat up straighter – the most movement his bandages would allow. “It’s not your fault. Not at all.”
“Y-you don't mean that,” Rachel sobbed.
“I do. On God, I really mean it. Hell, you're the only reason I'm still here to discuss this! That's like, the opposite of it being your fault.”
“B-but you wouldn't have needed rescuing i-if I hadn't ignored the red flags, if I told him to get lost, if I got you all out sooner-”
“Rachel…” Jeremy fell silent, shame and guilt smothered Rachel's mind. Through her blurry vision, she noticed Jeremy’s eyes widening. “I'll put it this way: You're not the one who chained us to those chairs, right?”
“N-no, the whole thing was… was already like that by the time I got there,” Rachel weakly admitted.
“And you're not the one who set off the timer.”
“No, but-”
“And you're not the one who…” Jeremy's voice shook as he tried to fight back memories Rachel was all too familiar with. “You're not the one who voted to kill Kevin.”
“Th-that wasn't their fault either!” Rachel blurted. “You guys were all scared, a-and you didn't know what would happen-”
“Sounds familiar, doesn't it?” Rachel couldn't decide if she wanted to groan in frustration at Jeremy's cocky grin, or kiss him to shut him up.
“…Fine, you win.”
“Oh, uh, speaking of that… You wouldn't happen to know who won our last game, would you?”
“It…” For a moment, Rachel couldn't decide how to respond: comfort, or the truth. No, he deserves to know what happened. “No one did. It was cancelled. Because… the four of you didn't show up. You were already…”
“…Oh.”
