Wittenberg University CROP Walk Returns September 23, 2018

Springfield, OH – This Sunday, Wittenberg University’s Weaver Chapel is hosting its annual 3 mile CROP Walk for Hunger. Registration begins at 1:30 pm on Alumni Way outside of the Benham-Pence Student Center, and the Walk itself begins at 2:00 pm. 

CROP Hunger Walks began in Bismarck, North Dakota in 1969. One thousand people gathered to walk and raise money to stop hunger. The following year saw York County, Pennsylvania host the first CROP Hunger Walk under the official title, and the event has been growing ever since. Today, over 1,0000 CROP Walks are held annually, and communities continue to dedicate themselves to ending hunger.

At its genesis in 1946, the Church World Service began to expand and by the following year, CROP was founded. CROP stands for the Christian Rural Overseas Program, and its original aim was to provide post-World War II European and Asian countries with grain from Midwestern farming families.

CROP Hunger Walks today help with the goals of the Church World Service. The CROP Hunger Walk allow 25% of the proceeds to remain in Springfield, which will be given to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Outside of Springfield, the proceeds from the CROP Hunger Walks go to help provide food and water to communities around the world. They also provide resources to help empower the people receiving their services, such as seeds, tools, and water systems.

“CROP Walk is a unique walk,” said Megan Winters, one of the Wittenberg students involved in planning the event. “It’s not just raising money and sending it away where we’ll never see the effects. ¼ of the money raised stays right here in Springfield, so it’s a way to connect the campus to the community, a real way for Witt to give back. CROP Walk is also phenomenal because, as a college student who doesn’t have a lot of money, anyone can walk, no funds required. We walk to raise awareness in the community, and we also explore areas of Springfield that benefit from this walk.”

YA Scavenger Hunt–ARE YOU READY??

In June, the Alliance of Young Adult Authors is sponsoring a massive young adult scavenger hunt. This is a chance to meet some new authors, grab a bunch of free books, and sign up to win a whole bunch of epic prizes!

RULES

Each author will be given a special keyword, which will be bolded and all caps like this: BUTTERFLIES.

All you have to do is visit all the author’s sites in this order, write down the special keywords to discover the short story, then enter the giveaway with the completed secret legend HERE.

European LeMans Series, LeMans Cup - Le Castellet

European LeMans Series and LeMans Cup had their first race of the 2019 season, at Le Castellet, also named Paul Ricard Circuit. The race weekend combined the two series over three days of action, with LeMans Cup racing the GT3-Specs cars along with LMP3 on Saturday.

European LeMans Series, on the other hand, were racing LMGTE-Specs cars as well as LMP2 and LMP3 cars over a 4-hour endurance race on Sunday.

Kokandy Productions is pleased to present the final production of its fifth anniversary season: the Tony Award-nominated musical GRAND HOTEL, playing April 15 – May 27, 2018 at Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont Ave. in Chicago. Featuring a book by Luther Davis, music and lyrics by Robert Wright and George Forrest and additional music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, the Kokandy production will be directed by Artistic Producer John D. It is 1928. The world is between wars, the stock market is booming, Berlin is the center of high life and optimism rules the day. Underneath it all, much is happening at the elegant Grand Hotel, where the lives of its eccentric guests intersect over one defining weekend: a fading prima ballerina; a fatally ill Jewish bookkeeper who wants to spend his final days living in luxury; a young, handsome, but destitute Baron; a cynical doctor; an honest businessman gone bad and a typist dreaming of Hollywood success. Based on Vicki Baum’s 1928 play and novel Menschen im Hotel (People in a Hotel) and the subsequent 1932 MGM feature film, issues of life and death, financial ruin, love and murder all converge as people come and go through the lobby of the Grand Hotel.

“The themes of isolationism, broken dreams and cultural differences form the central messages of the Grand Hotel – messages that are all too relevant in our nation’s current social and political climate,” comments director John D. Glover. “My vision is to create a ‘vanished luxury’ and the fever dreams of a world on the brink of depression and war and to illuminate for the theater-goer the harsh realities of each of these characters’ journeys. Especially now, the truth is more important than ever. In the musical, Otto Kringelein concludes that ‘life resides in people, not places.’ The hotel may be grand, but as the director, my job is to ensure we genuinely care about the people who venture through the revolving door….”

About the Artists

John D. Glover (Director) has directed Kokandy’s The Last Five Years, Sweet Smell of Success (Jeff Award nomination Best Musical), The Full Monty (Jeff Award nomination Best Musical), and most recently,Tomorrow Morning. For six years, John was responsible for the artistic and fiscal direction of the Theater Company of Purdue University and has directed regionally in Ohio and Indiana, including directing the grand opening production of the Theatre at the Center in Munster. John is the recipient of several Northern Indiana Excellence in Theater Foundation awards (NIETF), including Best Direction of a Musical for Pump Boys and Dinettes (Purdue Theater Company) and Best Direction of a Musical for Floyd Collins (Towle Theater), as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award in Regional Theater. In the “real world,” John is the Chief Operating Officer of a not-for-profit, faith-based senior living ministry.

Aaron Benham (Music Director) previously with Kokandy on Sweet Smell of Success and A Kokandy Christmas. Other Chicago credits include Merrily We Roll Along, Side Show (Porchlight); Marie Christine (BoHo); Bewildered (original score –Hell in a Handbag); Pumpboys and Dinettes (Timberlake Playhouse); also work with About Face, ATC, Bailiwick Chicago, Chicago Opera Theater, Circle, Montana Shakespeare, Piven, Pride Films, Second City, Theo-Ubique and Writer’s. Aaron has two Jeff Awards.

Brenda Didier (Choreographer) is thrilled to be making her Kokandy debut and to be collaborating with John, Aaron, Cam and this incredible group of artists, designers and staff!  Ms. Didier recently directed and co-choreographed Billy Elliot (Porchlight Music Theatre), directed Hair (Mercury Theater Chicago) and My Way, a Tribute to Frank Sinatra (Theatre at the Center). Other credits include direction and/or choreography with Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Goodman, Second City mainstage and etc., BoHo, Bailiwick Chicago, Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre, Cirque Shanghai, T-Mobile’s Home for the Holidays national commercial, Busch Gardens, Virginia, Six Flags Great America, Leo Burnett, numerous industrials, special events and university productions. Ms. Didier has received Jeff Awards in both direction and choreography, After Dark Awards, Broadway World Awards and the National Youth Theatre Award. Ms. Didier is the owner/director of the Lincolnshire Academy of Dance – now in its 20th season.

Hell in a Handbag Productions is pleased to continue its 15th Anniversary Season with the world premiere of BEWILDERED, a musical parody of the classic TV sitcom Bewitched, told from the perspective of Gladys Kravitz, Samantha Stephens’ iconic nosy neighbor. Featuring a book by Ron Weaver, music and lyrics by Aaron Benham and Ron Weaver and direction and choreography by Brigitte Ditmars, BEWILDERED will play September 27 – November 11, 2017 at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave. in Chicago. Tickets are currently available at www.handbagproductions.org and stage773.com, by calling (773) 327-5252 or in person at the Stage 773 box office. 

 A parody and reimagining of the beloved ‘60s/‘70s television sitcom Bewitched, this spellbinding throwback is told from the point of view of Gladys Kravitz, the poor, misunderstood neighbor who keeps seeing crazy things at the home of Samantha Stephens, a beautiful witch, and her ‘ordinary family.’ Gladys’ husband Abner has had enough and is about to take drastic measures. Can Gladys prove her visions are real without destroying the Stephens family – or is she doomed to a life of pills and institutions? Gladys finally gets her due in this fun and magical musical parody.

BEWILDERED features ensemble members David Cerda as Endora, Caitlin Jackson as Gladys Kravitz, Ed Jones as Uncle Arthur, Michael S. Miller as Mr. Tumer and AJ Wright as Darrin G. The production also features Steve Kimbrough as Larry Tate, Matt Miles as Abner, Elizabeth Morgan as Samantha, Scott Sawa as Darrin S. and Robert Williams as Tabitha/Louise. Rounding out the cast are Kira Gaudynski, Jennifer Ledesma, Travis Monroe Neese and Sarah Taylor as Magic Stage Hands.

About the Creative Team 

Ron Weaver (Book, Music and Lyrics) moved to Chicago 18 years ago as an Equity Stage Manager at The Writers Theatre in Glencoe. A long-time fan of Hell in a Handbag Productions, he is currently working as box office manager at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie, and on numerous other theatrical projects. Ron holds an MFA in Theatre Technology and Management from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. This is his first play to be produced.

Aaron Benham (Music and Lyrics) First time in the bag!  Chicago credits: Side Show, Scottsboro Boys, Putting it Together (Porchlight); Xanadu (ATC); The Wild Party (Jeff Award), Carrie (Bailiwick Chicago); Always Patsy Cline, A Tribute to the Andrews Sisters (Jeff Award) (Theo-Ubique); also work with About Face, Chicago Opera Theater, Montana Shakespeare, Second City, Writers. BFA, Emerson College.

Brigitte Ditmars (Director/Choreographer) is a proud Handbag Alumni having performed in several Handbag productions including the original Poseidon! An Upside-Down Musical, multiple Rudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeers and originated the role of Mary Anderson in the 2006 production of Caged Dames. She provided choreography for countless other Handbag productions including multiple incarnations of Rudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeer, the original Lady X and the 2010 remount of Poseidon! An Upside-Down Musical, for which she received a Joseph Jefferson Award Nomination. Previous directing credits include Rock of Ages (Timber Lake Playhouse); Maybe Baby, It’s You and Nunsense (Fox Valley Repertory); Model 736 (Collaboraction). She has received two Joseph Jefferson Awards for Achievement in Choreography for Reefer Madness (Circle Theatre) and Pinafore! (Bailiwick Repertory), as well as three additional nominations. Notable choreography credits include Peter and the Starcatcher (Metropolis Performing Arts Center); Xanadu (American Theatre Company); The Producers (Mercury Theatre); American Idiot (Northwestern University); Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play (Theater Wit); Hey! Dancin’! Hey! Musical! (Factory Theatre); Cinderella (Emerald City Children’s Theatre); Forever Plaid (Fox Valley Repertory); Improbable Frequency (Strawdog Theatre).
