U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday will honor Emmett Till, the Black teenager whose 1955 killing helped galvanize the Civil Rights movement, and his mother with a national monument across two states.
Till, 14 and visiting from Chicago, was beaten, shot and mutilated in Money, Mississippi, on Aug. 28, 1955, four days after a 21-year-old white woman accused him of whistling at her. His body was dumped in a river.
The violent killing put a spotlight on the U.S. civil rights cause after his mother, Mamie Till-Bradley, held an open-casket funeral and a photo of her son's badly disfigured body appeared in Black media.
The national monument designation across 5.7 acres (2.3 hectares) and three sites marks a forceful new effort by the President to memorialize the country's bloody racial history even as Republicans in some states push limits on how that past is taught.
"America is changing, America is making progress," said the Rev. Wheeler Parker Jr., 84, a cousin of Till's who was with the boy on the night he was abducted at gunpoint from the relatives' house they were staying at in Mississippi.
"I've seen a lot of changes over the years and I try to tell young people that they happen, but they happen very slow," Parker said on Monday in a telephone interview as he traveled from Chicago to Washington to attend the signing ceremony at the White House as one of approximately 60 guests.
Tuesday marks the 82nd anniversary of Till's birth in 1941. One of the monument sites is the Roberts Temple Church of God in Christ in Chicago, where Till's funeral took place.
The other selected sites are in Mississippi: Graball Landing, close to where Till's body is believed to be have been recovered; and Tallahatchie County Second District Courthouse, where two white men who later confessed to Till's killing were acquitted by an all-white jury.
Signs erected at Graball Landing since 2008 to commemorate Till's killing have been repeatedly defaced by gunfire.
Now that site and the others will be considered federal property, receiving about $180,000 a year in funding from the National Park Service. Any future vandalism would be investigated by federal law enforcement rather than local police, according to Patrick Weems, executive director of the Emmett Till Interpretive Center in Sumner, Mississippi.
Other such monuments include the Grand Canyon, Statue of Liberty and the laboratory of inventor Thomas Edison.
Biden, an 80-year-old Democrat, will likely need strong support from Black voters to secure a second term in the 2024 presidential election.
He screened a film recounting the lynching, "Till," at the White House in February. Last March, he signed into law a bipartisan bill named for Till that for the first time made lynching a federal hate crime.
A Republican field led by former President Donald Trump has made conservative views on race and other contentious issues of history a part of their platform, including banning books and fighting efforts to teach school children accounts of the country's past that they regard as ideologically inflected or unpatriotic.
"This is an amazing, teachable moment to talk about the importance of this story as an American story that everybody can share in now, particularly at a time when people are trying to rewrite history," said Christopher Benson, president of the non-profit organization the Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley Institute in Summit, Illinois.
“We have a memorial now that is not erasable. It can't be banned and it can't be censored, and we think that's a very important thing.”

Reasons Abed should win the autism swag summit:
He is canonically autistic
He is also some rare representation for a couple of other marginalised groups, being a mixed race Polish Arab and having clear mental health issues with psychotic breaks
His special interest is film and TV, which should surely be relatable to people invested in fictional character polls on tumblr
He displays the rarely portrayed trait of trouble reading analogue clocks. It's a small moment showing this, but it meant so much to me as someone who struggles with this
His safe food is the classic buttered noodles
He is shown struggling to empathise, but usually tries his best to connect with people regardless. He is neither an innocent angel nor an asshole, he's just a flawed person who keeps trying
He's very creative and clever, playing out his favourite fictional scenes, breaking the fourth wall with meta references, and having intense daydreams that add so much to the show
I love him and it would make me very happy

The Scotsman interview 10 September 2023
Outlander star Sam Heghan has revealed he is ready for the "next challenge" when he finishes working on the hit show - and suggested it may involve scaling Mount Everest.
Writing in a new version of his first memoir, Waypoints, the Scottish stage and screen star revealed he has been pitching the idea of a TV documentary which would see him follow in the footsteps of the British explorer and mountaineer George Mallory.
He made three expeditions up the world's highest mountain in the 1920s but disappeared during the third along with climbing partner Andrew Irvine in 1924. Although Mallory's body was eventually found 75 years later, the mystery of whether he reached the summit has never been resolved.
Heughan was previously due to star alongside Ewan McGregor in a feature film recalling the race to conquer Everest in the 1920s, however, the project which was due to start filming last year never got off the ground.
Heughan started working on Outlander 10 years ago and seven series of the show have been made to date. An eighth and final series has been commissioned, although filming has been delayed to the writers' strike which has crippled Hollywood.
Heughan has already starred in Men in Kilts, an American documentary series following the actor and his Outlander co-star Graham McTavish around Scotland. A second series was made in New Zealand.
Waypoints, which followed Heughan as he walked the West Highland Way, was described as a "journey of self-discovery" as the actor, who was brought up in Dumfries and Galloway and Edinburgh, recalled the pivotal points in his life.
In a new final chapter of Waypoints, the 43-year-old actor revealed how completing his book had felt "like the end of the first chapter of his life and the beginning of a second."
He writes: "I'm nearing the end of my time on Outlander-eight seasons and ten years' of shooting - and the show has really shaped who I am.
"It has given me great opportunities and valuable experience that I can build on moving forward"
"I'm excited for the future. but it feels vitally important to acknowledge where I've come from"
"I would be where I am today with my past successes and (multiple!) failures"
"As a young man, I dreamed of working in the acting industry and being well-respected. It's certainly a dream come true and now I'm ready for the next challenge"
"A dream of mine has been to see the highest mountain in the world"
"I wrote in Waypoints about the Everest movie project that fell through and was disappointed I never made it to Nepal"
"However, more recently, I have been pitching a TV show that follows that dream (and the footsteps of George Mallory) from the UK to the Himalayan plateau and the slopes of Everest"
"Perhaps, If I'm lucky enough and dream hard enough I may yet find myself on the slopes of 'Chomolungma,' the earth's highest mountain"
"However, this time I'll be better prepared and ensure I'm not walking alone (and carrying plenty of snacks!)."

Some of you have noticed that I repost something about supporting civilians in Gaza and against massacres, if these make you uncomfortable, just pull the plug. I try to control the number of reposts and not let politics dilute my fandom content, hope you guys can understand :)
Since I've post this, I'll say a few more words mainly for myself, as a record of some of my thoughts. The 20s of the 21st century was a time of social upheaval, with the outbreak of civil war in Burma, military coups in West Africa, and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict trigger the problems in the global energy and food markets, so leaded the outbreak of crises in many countries, such as the bankruptcy of Sri Lanka and the mutiny in Burkina Faso. This year's Sudanese civil war, the mutiny in Niger, the mutiny in Gabon, and the outbreak of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, perhaps it is also because of the epidemics that divert our attention from the fact that the world already become more unstable years ago.
Being concerned about the international situation is not a bad thing, but I think we ordinary people still need to learn the right way to cope with it. It's possible that the news won't make you panic, but there are still a lot of people who have anxiety because of politics. I'm a young person and 9/11 happened when my mum was pregnant, she still to this day tells me in a very emotional tone about how she was watching TV on the couch that night and the news report the images of 9/11, she thought it was a scene from a new Hollywood film, but it turned out to be a real life terrorist attack and it stuck with her till now. You see fear and shock are easily spread and people are much more sensitive to negative information than positive. It is necessary to realise what a fragile society we live in, and to realise how precious our life and happiness is.
What can we do for the world? I think protect ourselves from doomerism, maintain a positive attitude towards life, discover the beauty of the world and cherish the life we have now. The world has not been only getting worse, Saudi Arabia and Iran restored diplomatic relations, Syrian President returned to the League of Arab States summit and so on. UN is not useless, one-vote cannot hide other votes, UN still gives many small countries a chance to speak out.
The impact of imperialism is hard to disappear. After World War II, various countries became independent one after another, but after that, they still inherited the national boundaries and the economic system, and even the ideological steel marks designed by imperialism for them. The seeds of hatred were planted by the colonizers, many people still believe that only war and blood can resolve conflicts between faiths and races. So it is more important to understand, to keep thinking, to consider the possibility of communication before refereeing others, and never to believe that violence can solve problems.
I've seen a lot of people say "I hope what's happening in Palestine right now will make you radical" and there's nothing wrong with that, but I'd rather people give themselves some attention first, look around, take a deep breath, where are you, how did your get to own all the thing you have right now? Before asking others to become radical, I sincerely hope all my friends will be more kind, more appreciative of life, happier when they laugh and stronger when they are sad. Protect yourself first, change the things you can change, desire for truth and knowledge, so you can have a louder voice for these who be silenced.

F1 to court US market with pre-Miami GP summit featuring Hamilton
Formula 1’s latest effort to raise its profile in the United States will take place in the build-up to next week’s Miami Grand Prix. The F1 Accelerate Summit event will take place on Thursday ahead of the first of three American rounds on the calendar this year. The event is described as an opportunity for “trailblazers from the worlds of sports, entertainment and business to discuss how they can make a significant impact on the future of technology, performance, diversity and sustainability, not only in their own business but across industries and culture.” Among the F1 personalities taking part are seven-times world champion Lewis Hamilton, CEO Stefano Domenicali and McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown. Following an introduction by Domenicali and Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei, the six-hour event will begin with a session described as “a fireside chat with Sir Lewis Hamilton” on the theme of “the catalyst for change”. Hamilton, who is currently producing an F1 film featuring Brad Pitt, often speaks passionately and publicly about his interests outside of his motorsport career, including promoting diversity and inclusion. Later in the day Brown will appear alongside Domenicali, Maffei, F1 Academy managing director Susie Wolff and Miami Grand Prix managing partner Tom Garfinkel, who is also CEO of the Hard Rock Stadium where next week’s race will take place. This session “invites the leaders of the sport to lift the curtain for an exclusive look at what is next for F1.” A key draw of the event is likely to be the appearance of producer and director duo Jerry Bruckheimer and Joseph Kosinski who are working on Hamilton’s F1 film. The pair will share “an exclusive look” at the project, filming for which is due to begin soon. Underlining the event’s focus on entertainment, one session will discuss “the markets that athletes and professional sports leagues unlock when they play the Hollywood game.” This will be debated by Manish Pandey – the creative force behind the 2010 movie Senna and recent documentary on former F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone, Lucky! – along with representatives from US F1 broadcaster ESPN and Drive to Survive broadcaster Netflix. Among the other speakers at the event are former F1 driver David Coulthard, presenting a session on how F1 exploits live data in its coverage. Another session focused on inclusion brings together Wolff, grand slam-winning tennis player Maria Sharapova, a representative of Monarch Collective – a firm that invests in women’s sports – and the CEO of the Hello Sunshine production company. The F1 Accelerate Summit is being held in conjunction with The Wall Street Journal and will take place at the Rubell Museum, south of the Miami International Autodrome near the city’s downtown district. Hiking in New Zealand’s South Island
Feb 11-18, 2023
I’d booked a trail racing week with Race2Adventure in New Zealand’s South Island so thought I’d do a week’s hiking and exploring first. I’d already just spent two weeks traveling around Australia so was almost in the right time zone. The last time I’d been in the South Island was over the New Year between 2014 and 2015 although I’d been in the north island more recently in 2017.
As on my previous visit to New Zealand’s South Island, I was immediately mesmerized by its beauty – a wilderness of glaciers, beech forests and alpine lakes, only the south coast of Iceland, another volcanic island, coming close. It’s easy to get blasé once you’ve been there a few days but make no mistake, mere words will never convey the shear magnificence of this place. I’d live there if it wasn’t so far away from everywhere else.
My plan was to stay in Queenstown, rent a car and drive to the trailheads, while my hotel, the Holiday Inn, Frankton Road, was two miles from the town center, so some evenings I’d bus it in for dinner, other times I’d walk. Queenstown, with its low rise buildings surrounded by vistas of lakes and mountains in every direction, is one of my all-time favorite towns. It has the feel of a frontier town, bustling with restaurants and bars but unfortunately seems to have grown exponentially over just eight years since my last visit in 2014/15 – I sincerely hoped they were starting to apply the brakes on any further significant development. Pog Mahones, a friendly Irish bar with live music, became my go-to place for dinner and its fine Irish fayre.
In between hiking the Big Hill Walkway, the Big Hill Loop and the Master’s Traverse Loop I explored a number of interesting small lakeside towns -- the drives alone were worth it for the panoramic views. Arrowtown was one of my favorites and I’d be here a few times during the week. A quaint old low level gold rush town like something out of the wild west. Settled from 1862 with the first discovery of gold in the Arrow River, a number of Chinese arrived shortly after. Wanaka, last visited on my 2014/15 trip, is a bustling ski and summer resort town on the shore of Lake Wanaka. It seemed every kind of outdoorsy adventure activity was going on here. I did start to wonder where the eight years had gone since my last visit there, and mused that although Wanaka had not changed much, in many ways my journey had. On the shore of Lake Wakatipu the much smaller towns of Glenorchy, famous for its Lord of the Rings filming locations, and Kingston, most notable for its renovated steam railway and station, were also worthwhile detours for a quick visit.
Big Hill Walkway
Normally an 8.8 mile out and back from Arrowtown, up and down, I extended it a tad by including the final ascent to the Big Hill summit at 3730 ft elevation.
Tumblr media
My favorite part was the mountain beach woodland – located about halfway to the summit, it extended for about a mile on a level section of the trail.
Tumblr media
Dark, dense, silent and mysterious with reddy colored bark and a mildly funky smell from the soft carpet of decaying leaves underfoot, there seemed to be magic about in here. Indeed, on the return leg through the wood, a New Zealand fantail seemed intent on getting my attention – a native, small black and white bird with an oversized fanned tail, it futtered around my head with a persistence about it, a sense of urgency. I’m always on the lookout for signposts from the connected universe and attempted to understand its purpose, but to no avail.
Tumblr media
Big Hill Loop
The first 4.6 miles of this 10.7 mile clockwise loop followed the Big Hill Walkway route to the summit of Big Hill.
Tumblr media
Then a one mile open meadowland section along a ridge with amazing views followed by a 1.5 mile steep downhill to the Arrow River.
Tumblr media
The last 3.3 miles, which followed the Arrow River back to Arrowtown, started in the upper reaches as a narrow stream in a small, steep craggy valley where I had to constantly fight my way through spikey bushes which scratched my arms and legs. As the river started to level out and widen there was a chance to cool my feet down in numerous shallow river crossings before a final section high up alongside an enormous gorge leading back in to Arrowtown.
Tumblr media
Masters Traverse Loop
Normally a 7.3 mile anticlockwise loop from the Remarkable’s Ski Area, crisscrossing a 7000 foot mountain, I had to extend it by five miles due to the top 2.5 miles of road to and from the ski area being closed due to repairs.
Tumblr media
Once on the ridge after a long, steep climb, the trail followed an ill-defined track along the top of a fine line of scree, no more than a faint outline of dust left by fellow crazies, just below the rocky outcrop at the very top of the mountain. I envisioned putting a foot wrong, sliding down the scree and off the steep cliff just below, and wondered how long it would take for someone to find me given the lack of other souls up here. At some point the track seemed to disappear, even my All Trails app not helping, and for some inexplicable reason I started to scramble up the rocky outcrop, almost to the very top of the mountain! Under normal circumstances I don’t consider myself afraid of heights but the close proximity to the sheer drop, just beyond the slippery scree, made my hold on life seem tenuous. I felt very exposed, clinging to terra firma for dear life on all fours. I’ve realized over the years that in situations like this I seem to have some kind of intuitive early warning signal that stops me taking one more step before getting into a much more serious situation. So I did stop and take a deep breath. Then the only sounds in this thin air were the tinkling of falling rocks under my feet, my heavy breathing and mantras spoken out-loud to stop myself making a mistake or freezing -- ‘stay focused Paul, stay focused Paul, stay focused Paul’ and ‘fuck, fuck, fuuuuuuuck’! And, as always, the universe immediately spoke and pointed me in the right direction, the trail magically materializing as a thin line in the scree 20 feet below.
Tumblr media
I breathed a sigh of relief as I scrambled back down to it, thinking there’s a parallel with life here – yeah, live life to the full and go headlong into the lion’s mouth by all means, but always stay alert to squeezing the brakes if and when needed.
The scary ridge was followed by a time consuming, gradual two mile descent through a vast bolder field – rocks between five and 15 feet in diameter were generally too large to jump over so required much scrambling around and over them. I wondered when it would end and remembered thinking this is the very first hike I’d ever experienced where it seemed impossible to estimate the time it would take.
The bolder field gradually gave way to a lower lying area where silence surrounded a still turquoise lake. Bounded by a grassy meadow it was a rare moment of serenity within the midst of the soaring, wild grey rocky landscape.
Tumblr media
Just after spotting some rare wildlife, a pair of colorful, mating native paradise shelducks, I bumped into the only other humans crazy enough to hike in this area – two 20 something seasonal workers, Tom from Hungary and Christian from Argentina. They didn’t fancy walking the 10 miles back from whence they’d come, so, with my car being a bit nearer, we agreed to walk back to my car together, then I’d give them a lift back to their car. I was grateful for some fast company as we raced over yet another bolder field, bouncing from the top of one bolder to another back to the saddle of the ridge.
Tumblr media
I was now on my way to do a week of trail racing on the island with the Race2Adenture crew, but I knew I’d be back sometime soon for some more extra serious hiking in these magnificent mountains.

Shocking Footage: Shooter Caught on Camera Running Across Roof Right Under Secret Service's Nose
We have shocking new video footage today showing Trump's shooter running across the open rooftop in clear view, making no effort to hide himself, a full three minutes before the shooting.
This video, filmed by one of the bystanders who was actually hit by gunfire, reveals even more compelling evidence that the US Secret Service absolutely knew he was on the roof, in position and ready to assassinate Trump. Yet the Secret Service did nothing.
Even after the shooting began, the Secret Service waited a full 16 seconds - more than enough time for the shooter to unload a full magazine through his rifle - before returning fire.
This video reveals it is now absolutely certain this was an inside job, and that the Biden administration literally tried to murder Donald J. Trump.
We have full details on all that, plus a fascinating new interview with "The EMF Guy" with practical tips about protecting yourself from EMF pollution, in today's broadcast here:

Ukraine-Russia war live news: Zelensky accuses China of sabotaging peace summit as Putins forces take Donetsk village

Speaking at Asia’s premier security conference, Mr Zelensky said that China is pressuring other countries and their leaders not to attend the upcoming talks. He did not say which ones. “Regrettably this is unfortunate that such a big independent powerful country as China is an instrument in the hands of (Russian leader Vladimir) Putin,” he said at a news conference at the Shangri-La Dialogue defence forum. The Swiss had been hoping China would attend the peace conference in mid-June, but Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning signalled on Friday that that was unlikely. China has been calling for a peace conference with equal participation of all sides, including Russia, which has not been invited. Incoming Text for Tracey Edmonds & @YesJulz :
Hey, Tracey and YesJulz! I'm writing a synopsis for an action movie and I will show you my creative process, I'm sure you will giggle when you read my first draft, I use a very simple technique, before I even begin writing the screenplay, what I do is, I make a list of the stuff I want to see in this movie, and when I say a list, I literally mean, A LIST, I write down all the things I want to see in this action film, and when I have finished writing down that long list, I start building my story based on that long list. You can try this method at home, you can do it just like me *in my Eminem voice* Here it is, see below:
Here's a list of 20 scenes for your action film, incorporating elements of comedy, fights, suspense, thriller, and plot twists:

High-Speed Train Heist: A pulse-pounding train heist scene featuring a daring robbery attempt, epic fight sequences atop a speeding train, and a race against time to stop the criminals.
Urban Parkour Chase: A thrilling parkour chase through the city streets, with the protagonist utilizing their agility and resourcefulness to evade capture by both law enforcement and enemy agents.

Skydiving Escape: A breathtaking skydiving escape sequence as the protagonist leaps from a plane to evade pursuers, navigating through a stormy sky and engaging in mid-air combat before safely landing.
Cybernetic Showdown: The protagonist confronts a cybernetically enhanced antagonist in a futuristic showdown, featuring intense hand-to-hand combat, futuristic weaponry, and mind-bending plot twists.
Mountain Climbing Pursuit: A perilous mountain climbing pursuit as the protagonist scales treacherous cliffs and battles against hostile forces in a race to reach the summit and uncover a hidden secret.
Nightclub Brawl: A chaotic brawl erupts in a crowded nightclub, with the protagonist fighting their way through waves of adversaries while dodging gunfire, swinging from chandeliers, and improvising weapons from the environment.
Secret Base Infiltration: The protagonist infiltrates a heavily fortified enemy base, using stealth, gadgets, and cunning to evade detection and sabotage the operation from within.
Motorcycle Duel: A high-octane motorcycle duel through the city streets, with the protagonist facing off against a rival rider in a fast-paced and adrenaline-fueled showdown to settle an old score.
Final Showdown: The climactic final showdown between the protagonist and their arch-nemesis, featuring epic battles, shocking revelations, and a pulse-pounding conclusion that leaves audiences on the edge of their seats.

When it first hit theaters in 1977, "Smokey and the Bandit," the Southern-fried, high-speed adventure film featuring Burt Reynolds and Sally Field, became an instant American action-comedy favorite, featuring the exploits of Reynolds' wily character, Bandit, in a high-stakes, cross-country mission to fetch bootlegged beer for a wealthy family of race car sponsors.
Alongside Reynolds and Field, the vehicles themselves that were used in the production of the movie became characters of their own. Forty years later, those same vehicles - Bandit's 1977 Trans-Am, Snowman's tractor trailer and Smokey's mangled patrol car - will return to Atlanta, their original destination in the movie, and will be on display at the 2017 Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama at Atlanta Motor Speedway April 22 and 23.
Tyler Hambrick, a Smokey and the Bandit enthusiast who organizes the annual Snowman's Run that traces the original route from Texarkana, Texas to Atlanta, Georgia driven by Snowman in the movie, owns the replica vehicles and tours the country, making appearances at various shows where other movie enthusiasts gather as part of a non-profit charity to benefit wounded U.S. veterans.
"We are super excited to come out to the Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama with our Smokey and the Bandit vehicles as part of the 40th anniversary of the movie's release," said Hambrick. "We look forward to the opportunity to be a part of the show."

On December 14th, 2023, the New Beverly Cinema in Los Ángeles, California released its calendar for January 2024. The slate included many classics such as Funny Girl, Trainspotting, and In the Mood for Love. However, one show stood out; a five-movie marathon of The Twilight Saga on 35mm. I saw this and immediately fell to my knees. My mind was racing, thinking about not only what would happen if I went -- but also the dangerous corollary that would occur if I didn't. So naturally I forced my dad to take out his wallet and phone in the middle of dinner and dropped $72 on [two] tickets for this event.
One might ask: why would you go to this with your dad? And to that I answer -- I just didn't want to pay for my own ticket. Originally, he agreed to go to the first couple of movies then leave to eat then come back to see the last film. This did not happen. By the end of New Moon, my father -- 42, a film school graduate, and a hater of most female-centered media -- was so absorbed by the remarkable world of Forks that not only did he stay the entire time but hung around after to discuss with our fellow Twi-Hards.
The actual experience of the show was like none other. For context, I have seen Twilight (2008) in show at the New Bev twice before and have watched the Saga back to back at home many times. So although I'm VERY familiar with the films, this would be a feat like no other. Watching 720 minutes of this beautiful/terrible/heartwrenching/tragic/corny love story with a sold-out audience reminded me of why I love Twilight so much.
The collective awws, oohs, yays, and boos transpired cemented my belief in why this movie is so culturally cardinal. This is cinema. Regardless of the actual quality of the picture, Twilight has formed such a nexus with so many people that almost 20 years later they would sit in uncomfortable polyethylene chairs and watch all 5 films back to back. The purpose of cinema isn't to win the most Oscars or to make the most money at the box office -- it is to grasp the opportunity to bridge humanity on film.
I realize this reads more like a diary entry than a film review, but I find it important to discuss other aspects of film than just the quality on this app. So thank you Summit, thank you RPattz and KStew, thank you Catherine Hardwicke, and a begrudging thank you to Stephanie Myers. Because without Twilight, I would not be the daughter, artist, friend, person, or consumer...I am today.

CARMEL, Ind. (AP) — An Indiana Moms for Liberty chapter has followed the conservative group’s national playbook, challenging diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in school districts as part of its “parental rights” mission. But the chapter’s aims and use of a quote from Adolf Hitler in its inaugural newsletter unexpectedly spilled over this fall into a mayor’s race previously defined by local development. The polarizing nature of Moms for Liberty, which has gained name recognition for its push to pack school boards with its endorsements, has spurred some left-leaning candidates to capitalize on opposition to the group and stir voters against their conservative opponents. In Carmel, Indiana, the Democratic candidate for mayor has repeatedly used the group when attacking his opponent, even though the mayor's office has no administrative power over school districts, and the local chapter has publicly remained silent on the race outside of its traditional battleground.Democratic candidate and Carmel city councilman Miles Nelson asked his opponent on stage earlier this month to denounce the local Moms for Liberty chapter.Fellow city councilwoman and Republican Sue Finkam did not respond and later accused Nelson of trying to use national politics to inflame the race to lead the city of nearly 102,000 people located about 15 miles (24.1 kilometers) north of downtown Indianapolis. The Hamilton County chapter of Moms for Liberty told The Associated Press it can only endorse candidates for school board, but also accused Nelson of campaigning on “silencing parents.”Florida-based nonprofit Moms for Liberty has challenged curriculum and books featuring instruction on systemic racism and LGBTQ+ topics in K-12 education. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate and extremism around the U.S., classified Moms for Liberty as an “anti-government extremist group” earlier this year.Since its inception in 2021 amid opposition to schools' COVID-19 mandates, the organization has swiftly gained sway within Republican politics. Five GOP candidates spoke at the Moms for Liberty annual summit in Philadelphia this summer.Wealthy, suburban Hamilton County fits the model of areas where Moms for Liberty has sought to influence school policies, according to a report by the Brookings Institution. The city of Carmel itself went for Joe Biden in 2020 after backing Donald Trump in 2016. Trump held on to the broader county in 2020, though by a narrower margin compared to 2016, according to an Indianapolis Star analysis. The local chapter is relatively new, but its June newsletter attracted wide condemnation after quoting Hitler on its front cover. The chapter apologized shortly after and edited the newsletter.Nelson, who described himself as a “man of devout Jewish faith” spoke out against the group on social media at the time. As a candidate for mayor, he called on Finkam to do the same.During the Oct. 2 debate, Nelson directly asked Finkam to “denounce Moms for Liberty once and for all.”Finkam did not reply. Her silence was met by cries from the crowd.Finkam later said on social media that she was followed, filmed and called a “Nazi” and a “racist” after the debate. She insisted she would not “bend to my opponent’s theatrics."Kory Wood, senior adviser for Finkam’s campaign, said in a written statement that she has denounced the use of the quote multiple times. Finkam condemned its use in June while speaking at the Carmel Pride event, according to reporting by the Indianapolis Star.“Her opponent is unqualified to lead our city, and is repeatedly asking about Moms for Liberty to take voters’ focus off his incompetence,” Wood said. “Sue respects our resident’s ability to elect a school board to lead school operations and curriculum.”Paige Miller, chair of the Moms for Liberty Hamilton County Chapter, said in a written statement that Nelson has made opposing the group "a platform for his campaign.”“The oath of office for Mayor requires the elected official to promise to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America,” Miller wrote.
“We expect our elected leaders to uphold this integral part of office which guarantees citizens freedom of speech and the right to assemble, as stated in the Constitution.”Nelson said his continued opposition of Moms for Liberty is about supporting teachers and the school district. The mayor's office doesn't oversee schools, but local education is essential to drawing business and new residents to growing Hamilton County, Nelson said.“What stuck was this Moms for Liberty thing,” Nelson said about the debate. “Because she was silent and it’s a hate group.”Jon Valant, director of the Brown Center on Education Policy at the Brookings Institution, said while Moms for Liberty has rallied a base to its cause, the group also has generated staunch opposition. Affiliation with Moms for Liberty can hurt some candidates, as in the Carmel race.“It’s a clear example of how opposition to Moms for Liberty can galvanize people to vote against conservative candidates,” Valant said.On the other hand, Valant said, a politician distancing themselves from the group may alienate its local membership and supporters, even if the candidate is not running for school board.Diane Shaw, 38, said her family moved to Carmel from a Chicago suburb in 2021. She and her husband have two children, 9 and 6 years old, and were drawn to the school district and lower cost of living in the area.Shaw, a former teacher, said she is concerned about the Moms for Liberty chapter's influence in the county. Her husband David Shaw, 41, said he considers Finkam’s silence as “alluding to support” for the group he feels drives divisive, hateful rhetoric.“That, to me, just makes it a nonstarter,” David Shaw said. “I’ll never not vote and so it just means that Nelson is my candidate of choice.”
