It's been talked about that part of the reason why Halt gets seasick and hates the ocean is because of Ferris trying to drown him, and poison him with seafood, and this is pretty much canon to me.
But picture this: Halt hates walking under big buildings, or walking straight under the walls or close to the walls of the castle, because of Ferris pushing the roof tiles on him.
Him just getting really uncomfortable and nervous, and occasionally when it's particularly bad, or maybe the day reminds him of that day, when he thinks no ones looking, he glances up, just to be sure.

Hey umm do you guys remember the scene where Halt muttering something but the words he mumbles don't make any sense to Horace I bet its because he was muttering in Hibernian so his own language
Tumblr media
Because I can swear when he was unconscious he was saying whatever he was muttering in his mother language because his brain didn't translate it into the common language

Okay, so book one
Halt definitely spent some time picking out the right wild flowers.
Pretty sure he wanted his house to look homey to Will to make it feel less like Halt took away his home
Because imagine, the orphan whose parents died for you, that you brought to Redmont, watched him grow up and now have as your apprentice comes ‘home’ to a dark and scary place of the scary mysterious ranger. Something messy with absolutely no colours whatsoever. I don’t think Halt would’ve let that happen

A random headcanon about Crowley I have is that he grew up COUNTRY country, or the closest equivalent that they would have in that time, I guess. Like, he grew up on a farm in the middle of the countryside, and his best friends growing up were chickens sorta country, lol
That, combined with Halts extravagance and the fact that Irish insults are just hilarious, means that whenever Gilan is being particularly dumb the entire corps gets treated to some of the best insults they have ever heard
Also, Crowley doesn't really have a country accent typically, but sometimes, when he's ranting about something, he does. When both Crowley and Halt have accents, you know some crap's boutta go down
Idk I just realized we didn't even have any hints as to what Crowley's family or upbringing was like and I decided this is actually kind of amazing lol

Headcanon that Rangers are, as a whole, incredibly superstitious
Crowley only wears green socks. Halt carves a small good luck symbol into every bow he makes for himself. Will always keeps a pebble with him that he found on his first day back from Skandia. Gilan always keeps carrots on him, and whenever has to leave Blaze longer than a few minutes, he gives her one half before he goes and the other half when he comes back
They would never admit this, not to any other Rangers and especially not to non-Rangers. But Ranger work is lonely work, and when it's just you and a horse for weeks at a time and your life is on the line so often...well, sometimes you feel better with green socks, or when you make an informal promise to your horse that you won't get into trouble

Saw a recent post from @that-one-enby-ranger about how Halt loves ducks and I’m about to expand on it.
Halt loves ducks because Caitlin used to throw them rice. It made their parents very mad so Caitlin would do it behind their backs. One day when Half was walking by the pond, he saw her do it, and asked why she threw rice and not bread. She told him how bread actually hurt them by making them feel full when they weren’t, and how they like things like rice and lettuce instead.
Then Halt would go with Caitlin to feed the ducks and those were some of Halt’s favorite memories, of talking with his sister, playing in the dirt like a regular kid, and feeding the ducks.
So now that he is semi-retired, he finds more time to go feed the ducks by the pond, and it reminds him of better times.
A year later he sees one of the once baby ducks is wounded and decides to take it in to help it. And though Pauline acts disapproving, she sees it makes him happy and the duck ends up growing on her. Halt names the duck Lucy, because his sister had mentioned at the time that I’d she had a daughter, she would name him Lucy. He had acted like he wasn’t listening at the time, like a brother does, but he listen to every word she said. Her voice soothed him.

I just came up with a little head cannon (i’m sorry if someone’s already came up with it)
But what if Halt feeds the stray dogs in Redmont?
To me he seems like the guy to secretly go out, buy lots of meat and go to a place where lots of dogs are. I feel like he also did that in Hibernia.
But maybe got caught doing it once and was locked up in his room

specifically Will headcanons because i love him
As a way to cope, Will started writing poetry as an apprentice, sometimes just a few words and sometimes long sonnets. He still does this even when he's older
Despite Halt's criticism, Will's Gallican is actually pretty good, he knows some other languages too that he can get by with
And I know this headcanon has been said before, but Will knows curse words in about 50 different languages and uses them on the reg. Halt finds it hilarious
Will and Alyss used to lay in the grass and stargaze, sometimes using a chart and finding constellations, and sometimes making their own. After Alyss' death, Will still goes outside and finds their constellations, feeling that she's up there now, in the very stars they used to watch
He actually retired from the corps at a pretty young age in comparison to some, because he wanted time to explore the world one more time before truly settling down to rest
^This was his original retirement plan with Alyss, they were going to retire at 50, and travel the world, discovering new places and making new memories before they settled back in Araluen, where they would grow old together. Unfortunately, this never came to pass, but Will still retired at around 55 and traveled, he just did it alone.
One time when Will was bored he just impulsively decided to enter a world class archery competition (think Medieval olympics) he did it undercover, just for shits and giggles, and of course he won. So now there's a random Will Barton out there who holds the world record for best archer. The whole ranger corps knows it was him and they all laugh about it, cuz its just the funniest-most-Will Treaty- shit ever to be done.
There's a running joke that Will breaks all his mugs. Not all his glassware period, no, just his mugs. No one understands, not even him. But anyway that's why every holiday or birthday, at least 1 or 2 of his friends has to gift him a mug. Because he's always in need of new mugs.
Will died from Alzismers. Physically, he stayed in very good condition as he aged, but his mind deteriorated fast. He forgot his friend's names, he couldn't remember old missions, his profession, toward the end he couldn't even remember his own name. His own legacy. On his death bed, he was surrounded by strangers-- once called friends. The only thing he seemed to remember was Alyss. She was the name he kept repeating as his own mind soon forgot how to breathe.
That last one was unnecessarily sad so here's something not so cripplingly depressing: When not in uniform, Will's kinda got like a model off-duty look. Kind of a careless "yeah no thoughts were put into this fit but actually there were many thoughts" anyways he's kind of a style icon, even in sweatpants.

K so we all know that Halt is severely traumatized and we all remember that moment in the second book when he knew that it was Gilan by his footsteps well ITS A TRAUMA THING alike he memorized every single one kind of a footstep in the castle so he could react quickly when his parents were coming

One of my headcanons is that part of the reason why Halt cuts his hair himself is because he hates it with a burning passion whenever someone else touches his hair, even if he knows them, and he cant handle a complete stranger doing that.
If a stranger touches his hair for some fucking reason, his first instinct, half from reflexes and half from "don't fucking touch me I'll fucking kill you" is to just punch them.
If a friend does it he'll probably just grab their wrist super fucking hard or something (think when he grabbed Will in book 1. Harder than that) and shove them back
If someone close to him like Crowley does it could go either way. On the one hand, he's besties with him, but on the other hand, if Crowley does it on purpose and knows he doesn't like it he's getting decked. It would depend on the situation.
And if someone he hates does it they're dead.

You know what one of my favorite headcanons is, I think Halt actually has a good ear for music and a good voice he actually understand music and he can sing song, lullaby realy well but he hides it
I don't know why maybe it reminds him of his time in the palace when he was a prince and other things
And I think that since he was once a prince the same goes for dancing I think he already knew when they took dance lessons from Lady Sandra for the wedding

I imagine that Crowley had enough of unnecessary drama during the gathering and he thought of the hug it out rule. After drama they have to either hug it out or wear the get along shirt

Headcanons that also includes Hibernia because I don't see enough of them
Halt takes every chance he can to talk about his culture, trying very heard to not break his stoic persona in the process. He doesn't really have much interaction with his culture since leaving cause there aren't many Hibernian people in Redmont, but he still loves it, so talking about it is the next best thing
The one time he found a Hibernian person in Redmont, she was a traveler selling sheet music for Hibernian folk songs. She gave one to Halt for free cause she loved talking to somebody in her native language so much, and he gave it to Will. Will didn't really practice it that much at first, but eventually, he did play it for Halt on his birthday cause he just wanted to. Halt was very happy =]
Halt carved the words "Mo Anam Cara" ("my soulmate) into Crowleys bow when they were younger-ish. Eventually, that bow ended up getting snapped because of an accident, and Crowley was devastated. Halt noticed he had a new bow at the next gathering and was just like, "Oh, you have a new bow. Did something happen to the last one?" And Crowley like broke down in that 'half being funny half genuinely wanting to cry' way until Halt eventually just took the new one out of his hands and carved the same thingy into it again
Crowley has made a habit of picking up tiny little Hibernian phrases everywhere he can just to use them in front of Halt - Halt loves it

The RA boys as pirates:
Halt - captain of the ship
Will - lookout
Crowley - first mate, navigator and planner (actually the real captain but decided to let Halt have the honour) also makes sure they go on shore from time to time because Halt refuses to get seasick again
Horace - cook and rower
Gilan - rower and storyteller
Duncan/Arald/David - a trio constantly pulling pranks on people, but rowing harder than anyone else
George - left at the shore
Erak - constantly fighting over being the captain with Halt. When they have peace he's drink. He's always drunk and refuses to do anything like rowing
Svengal - rower and can't stop comparing everything that happened with his aunt. Everyone needs him to shut up but he doesn't get the hints
Selethen - actually useful. Helps Crowley navigating and a rower
Malcolm - healer of the crew
