💭 could I have Henry and Valerie please? :D
Gorgon, why did you choose this manchild? Henry stuffs some popcorn in his face as he watches a live feed of Olivier getting into another fight. He sips a can of soda right as Olivier lands a blow to Mike's face. You have questionable tastes. He sends the recording through an encrypted number. Henry sighs. But then again, I owed you.

[ Rainbow Six/Clancyverse Masterlist ]
A full moon shone in the sky as I pulled myself up out of the water to lay on the boulder half sticking out of the ocean. The elders forbade us from coming this close to the shore because there was too much of a risk that a human might see us. I didn’t care. They already shunned me for the most part because of my heritage.
Turning onto my back I stared up at the night sky my black tail still partially submerged in the water. There were times I envied the humans that they got to see such a wondrous sight at night. I had heard that the humans had even named some of the star patterns and called them constellations. But the moon and stars weren’t the only thing I had come up to see.
It wasn’t long before I heard the footsteps. I immediately slipped back into the water and hid as I watched the human take his usual seat on one of the nearby boulders at the edge of the water. For the last couple weeks he had been coming here late at night to sit. And for the last couple weeks I had taken to watching him.
At first I was tempted to drown him. It had been a while since I tasted human flesh. And the gun holstered to his thigh told me he was from the military base the local fisherman talked about. He would have made for a fun target. But as I got closer I couldn’t help but find him to be attractive, for a human anyway.
He was older with gray hair and a beard that was just as dark grey. His skin was paler than many of the fisherman who lived in the area, but not as pale as mine. He was on the taller side and had a decent figure. Well as far as I thought compared to other humans.
Keeping my eyes just above the water I watched him from where I was hiding behind a large rock. A part of me wondered what was on his mind that had him sit by the ocean instead of sleeping like the rest of his species. Tonight he was not just lost in thought. His fingers were idly playing with something metal.
Curiosity getting the better of me I slowly and as quietly as I could swam closer to try and make out what it was. I tilted my head to the side as I looked at the curious object. The bottom was a thick square shaped brass colored piece of metal. On top was a silver u shaped piece of metal attached. I hadn’t seen anything like it before. Maybe Elizabeth or Valerie knew what it was.
The man sighed heavily his gaze falling down towards the waves lapping at the rocks below him. I quickly moved back behind the rock. As I did I had made a splash and the man’s gaze turned toward me. He stood and moved closer to the edge of the rock, kneeling down for a better look. For a brief moment I thought he might have seen me but I wasn’t sure.
As I watched him from where I hid I saw the metal object slip from his hand. As it hit the water the man said, “Shit!” It was the first time I had heard his voice. I surprised myself when I found it pleasant to listen to. As he leaned closer to the water I had a sudden idea.
Diving under I swam closer until I was in the water under him. His brows furrowed as he stared down into the water where I was. I swam a little closer and he blinked as if in disbelief. Unable to help myself I began to hum softly. He leaned even closer to the water. Swimming closer still, I broke through the waters surface and reached a hand up to him.
I continued humming to keep him in a trance as I reached my hand up and gently touched his cheek. My fingers combed through his beard gently. It was softer than I was expecting. Being this close I could see his eyes were green and above his left eyebrow was a scar on his forehead. I traced it delicately wondering what had caused it.
As I did I he had reached a hand down and just as delicately traced the scars on my cheek. A part of me wanted to flinch and break away but I didn’t. The last time I had gotten this close to a human was how I got those scars. But his touch was gentle and soft. I didn’t feel threatened.
“Lilith?” My concentration broke at the sound of my name being called. “Lilith? What are you doing?” The man blinked suddenly as my trance broke. I quickly swam down out of view. As I did I saw the object he had dropped. I stopped and picked it up as Valerie swam over. “Are you alright?” she asked when she reached me.
“Yes I’m fine,” I replied as my gaze looked up. The man was gone. I sighed as an unexpected twinge of sadness hit me. Disgusted with the feeling I turned my attention to the object in my hand. Glancing up at Valerie I asked, “What did you want?”
“Just some advice is all.” She curiously looked at the item in my hand. “Oooh is that a lock?” I gave her a curious look.
“What’s a lock?” I asked as my attention turned back to the item in my hand.
“Humans use them to keep things from being opened. Where did you find it?”
“He dropped it.” I looked back up at the surface. When I looked back at Valerie she was looking at me curiously. “What?”
“You were watching him?”
“He fascinates me is all.”
“You know humans are dangerous.”
“I know.” Reaching my hands to the back of my neck I untied the black ribbon I wore and slipped the lock onto it before retying it around my neck. Valerie watched me with a raised eyebrow. “I think it’s pretty,” I said quietly. What I didn’t say was that I liked it because it was his.
“Right.” Valerie shook her head with a smile.
“So what was it you needed advice on?” I asked as we began swimming away from the shore.
-
It had been a few days since I briefly let the human see me. It was an accident really. Valerie had interrupted my concentration and my trance on him broke while I was still out of the water. It wasn’t her fault though. I was out of the water touching a human who in turn was touching me. So I really couldn’t blame her for being worried. It was a similar incident that had left me with a scarred face.
Ironically she had come to see me asking advice on her own interaction with a human. It would seem that she too had a fascination with a human. Apparently she had tried drowning a Frenchman but couldn’t go through with it. She was worried she had developed feelings for the human. I suggested she just watch him from a distance or maybe avoid the area she saw him in. Maybe keeping her distance would help her get over her feelings.
Crossing her arms she called me a hypocrite because she knew I wouldn’t do the same with my human. I had sighed and told her to ignore my advice then. She had seen how close I had been to the human and the way I was affectionately touching him. If I thought that she should keep her distance from the Frenchman then maybe I should keep my distance from the man I let see me.
So I did. I even avoided Valerie and Elizabeth. A part of me worried that Valerie would tell someone what she saw me do and I didn’t need anymore judgment from others. As I relaxed in my cave I couldn’t stop thinking about him. My fingers played idly with the lock on the ribbon I wore close around my neck. I stared at some of the human trinkets and items I had decorated my cave with. My gaze settled on the dark purple knitted crossbody bag I had once found dropped by a human.
It had a few interesting human items in it but I had found it to be useful for collecting shells and human treasures and bringing them back. Deciding I needed a distraction I grabbed the bag and slung it over me. I swam through the short tunnel that led to my cave. The entrance of my cave was covered by hanging seaweed that helped keep it hidden. Before leaving I made sure the plants went back into place.
As I swam around I eventually came across an old human ship. I could hear noises coming from inside. Swimming close to one of the openings I called out, “Elizabeth? Is that you?” Her head popped out not long after.
“Oh, hey Lilith.” She swam up and sat on the ledge. “You okay? Valerie and I have been wondering where you were.” I shrugged.
“I just wanted to be alone.”
“And it has nothing to do with your human does it?”
“Of course Valerie told you,” I muttered.
“She was worried is all. I don’t bother with humans for a reason. After what happened to you I’m surprised you would still take risks like that.”
“I had him under a trance until Valerie came along and broke my concentration.”
“Then why was he touching you?” I looked over at her. If he had been fully under a trance he wouldn’t have moved at all.
“I don’t know,” I shrugged.
“Well just be safe Lilith. Next time you might not be so lucky.” With a sigh I swam off leaving Elizabeth to continue her exploration of the ship.
-
As I swam along I didn’t find much. Swimming up to the surface I saw that it was beginning to get dark. Going back under I decided to head for the shore. I’d have better luck finding something interesting. At least that’s what I told myself.
When I got close I saw him. He was already sitting in the same spot he always did. I quietly swam closer before leaning against a rock to watch him. His gaze constantly moved to the waters surface. It was obvious our encounter had stuck with him.
After some time the man sighed and stood. I watched as he turned and began to walk away. Swimming over to the boulder he was just sitting on, I dug into my bag and took out one of the shells I had collected. I placed it on the boulder before making a loud splash as I went back under. Once I was back in my hiding spot I watched as the man turned and walked back.
He slowly knelt down and picked up the shell a dumbfounded look on his face. As he stood back up he looked around to see if there was anyone else nearby but saw no one. A small smile crossed his lips as he looked the shell over. He looked down towards the water’s surface, and towards the rock I was hiding behind. I smiled as I watched him put the shell in his jacket pocket before walking away.
-
The next night I returned again. My human was in his usual spot. And like the night before I silently watched him until he stood to leave. Tonight however he knelt down and placed something down on the boulder before he began walking away. I immediately swam over and picked up the item while leaving a shell in its place. Making sure to make a loud splash, I swam back to my rock.
I watched the man as like the night before he walked back over and picked up the shell. He smiled as he stood up and looked down at the water. I couldn’t help but smile to myself as I watched him again pocket the shell before turning to leave. My gaze then turned to the object he had left for me. It was a large glass marble with an iridescence of sorts swirled inside it. With a smile I looked back up where the human had been before retreating into the sea.
The night after that it happened again. Before he’d leave he would place something on the rock which I would then replace with a shell. This time he left a rounded and smooth purple stone. And the night after that it happened again and again after that.
Back in my cave I had made the shelf on the side of the wall next to the rock I slept on just for the trinkets he’d leave me. As I placed the latest trinket, a small glass turtle onto the shelf I smiled. I knew the others would disapprove of my interactions with him but I didn’t care. Seeing him and exchanging gifts the way we did brought me a kind of happiness I hadn’t felt in a long time.
-
I hummed softly to myself as I swam along the ocean floor looking for shells. So far I had found a couple nice ones but I wanted to find one that was extra nice to leave for my human. None of the others had discovered what I had been doing. However I was sure Valerie and Elizabeth probably suspected something was up. I was certain they both knew I had not left my human alone.
They were only worried for my safety because of what happened to me before. If not for their help when it happened I would have been killed or worse because of a human. But this man was different. He didn’t come across as threatening and his touch had been gentle.
For a moment I had been lost in thought, thinking about that night when he had touched my cheek. He had traced my scars delicately despite being under my trance. That still puzzled me. He shouldn’t have been able to move of his own free will but he did. It had me tempted to try putting him in a trance again.
My thoughts were soon interrupted by the smell of blood in the water. It was human. Realizing I wasn’t too far from the shore where I would watch my human I began to worry. I quickly swam for the shore. The closer I got the stronger the smell of blood became.
When I reached the area I would watch my human from I looked around. It didn’t take long to see him. As I swam over to him I could see blood in the water near his head. I wrapped my arms around his waist and swam quickly to the surface. It was still light out but overcast. Luckily there were no other humans around to see as I swam over to the small beach nearby. Using all my strength I pulled him out of the water and onto the beach.
I stared down at him with worry. He wasn’t breathing. Leaning my head down against his chest I listened for a heartbeat. It was faint. If I didn’t get the water out of his lungs soon he would die. The problem was I was better at drowning humans than saving them. Unsure of what to do I pressed down on his chest and abdomen. To my surprise it worked.
The man coughed up water, his head turning slightly to the side. I sighed with relief as he did before realizing he was awake and would see me. Before I could turn and slide back into the sea his gaze was on me. He stared at me silently a moment before his eyes closed again. I then remembered the blood.
Reaching my hand to the back of his head I felt the wound. When I brought my hand back it was covered in blood, the smell of it making my mouth water As I slid into the waves and back into the sea I figured he must have slipped and hit his head on the rocks before falling in. I swam down and began picking some of the seaweed before also picking some sea moss. While I knew they helped with our wounds, I had no idea if they would help a human’s wounds.
Despite this I swam back up and back toward the beach where he was still lying unconscious, the waves crashing over his legs. As I pulled myself up onto the sand next to him I checked to make sure he was still breathing. When I was sure he was still alive I moved his head and placed the moss and seaweed combo against the bleeding wound. Then there was nothing to do but wait.
I moved a few stray clumps of his dark grey hair out of his face. He really was attractive even if he was a human. My hand rested softly on his cheek as I continued to admire him. If Elizabeth or Valerie saw me now they would freak out. They’d probably even come up and drag me back down into the sea.
Suddenly I remembered the blood. If I had been able to smell it then others would have as well. With I sigh I turned to head back into the sea. Not everyone would be as understanding as Valerie and Elizabeth. I turned back and after digging a shell out of my bag and carefully put it in his jacket pocket.
Once back in the water I looked around to see if I could see anyone but I didn’t. At least not yet. Swimming to the surface I glanced back at the beach I left my human on. He was still there, still unconscious. I sighed hoping he would be okay before diving back under.
-
It had been a few days since my human almost drowned. Every night I went to the shore but he still hadn’t shown up again. A part of me was worried one of my kind had found him on the beach and killed him. Another part hoped he had been found by his own and was still healing.
I had been keeping myself distracted by looking for shells but the worry still ate away at me. There was no one I could talk to about it. Elizabeth would probably say good riddance. Valerie would say it was for the best. And I would just feel worse.
Truth was that I shouldn’t have felt anything for him. He was a human. Human’s were not be trusted. They were a cruel species who would kill or capture us if they could. But my human was different. I was certain.
As the light of day began to fade I swam towards the shore hoping I’d see him again. I had to know if he was okay or not. When I neared the shore something shiny in the sand caught my eye. Swimming closer I picked it up. It was a glass bead.
As I looked at it there was a plop in the water above me. Looking up I watched as another slowly sank to the bottom. I picked that one up as well and put them both in my bag. Then another bead was dropped in. After picking that one up and putting it in my bag I swam towards the rock I used to hide behind.
Cautiously I swam to the surface and looked out and saw him. My human was sitting in his usual spot holding something in his hand. With a smile I watched as he lifted a bead like the other’s I had found and tossed it into the water. Unable to help myself I dived down with a splash and collected it. When I surfaced back behind my rock I watched as he tossed another, this time in my direction. I dived under again and again didn’t care if I made a splash. Picking up that bead I quickly swam back up behind my rock.
My human had moved down the rock near the water. He tossed another bead in the water but not as far as the others. I knew there was a chance he might see me again but at the moment I didn’t care. Diving under again I swam over and picked it up. Before I could swim back to my rock he had tossed another into the water. This one was closer to the rock he was sitting on. Swimming to pick it up, I watched as another was dropped in and quickly moved to pick that one up as well.
Another was dropped right in front of the rock. I watched as it sank down landing softly on the sand. For a moment I hesitated. Slowly I swam over and picked it up just as another was dropped in. As that one sank down I grabbed it and put it in my bag. I waited for a moment but he didn’t drop anymore in the water. Reaching into my bag I grabbed the shell I had been waiting to give him and swam up.
Cautiously I reached my hand above the water and placed the shell down on the rock. As I did I felt his fingers softly touch mine but he did not grab me as would have been expected of a human. I was freely able to pull my arm back down under the water. After I did I watched as he submerged his own hand carefully. Looking closer I saw one last bead. I picked it up out of his hand and put it in my bag with the others.
As he began to pull his hand back out of the water I reached up and gently grabbed it. For a moment we remained still, holding each others hands. After a while he gently pulled his hand back. Instead of letting go I let him pull me up. As my head broke the waters surface my human smiled.
“You’re real,” he said quietly. I couldn’t help but smile softly.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” He looked a bit taken aback.
“You speak English?”
“Is that what humans call it?” I asked curiously. He nodded slowly his gaze falling on the lock on the ribbon around my neck.
“I see you found my lock.” My hand grasped it briefly. “Keep it,” he said with a smile. “What are you?”
“I believe humans refer to us in your stories as mer folk.” I watched as his gaze drifted down towards the water. With a smile I pulled myself up onto the rock next to him, sitting with the lower half of my tail remaining in the water.
“Okay,” he muttered quietly as he sat back a look of disbelief on his face. He remained quiet for a time as he stared at me.
“How’s your head?”
“You’re the one who saved me.” I nodded. “It’s better. Thank you.” I smiled softly.
“Why do you come here every night?”
“You’ve been watching me.” I nodded again. “It’s easier to clear my head here. It’s peaceful.” He paused a moment before asking, “So why have you been watching me?”
“Curiosity,” I replied as I leaned back splashing my tail briefly. “My kind doesn’t trust humans. Your kind historically hasn’t been kind to mine.”
“I can believe that.” He reached a hand out and delicately traced the scar on my cheek. “Is that how you got this?” I nodded slowly. “I’m sorry.”
“You’re different.”
“Sam.”
“What?”
“My name is Sam.”
“Lilith.” He smiled at me as he slowly removed his hand from my face. I couldn’t but find his smile to be attractive. Unable to help myself I reached a hand out and touched his cheek and beard.
A sudden splash nearby caught our attention. Looking back at him I said, “I have to go.”
“Will I see you again?”
With a smile, I said, “Of course.” I then slipped back into the water and began swimming away. As I did I looked around to see who it was that might have seen me but didn’t see anyone.
Suddenly out of nowhere a hand grabbed my arm. “What the hell is wrong with you?” Valerie stared at me with a shocked expression. “Do you realize how much of a risk you took?”
“You’re one to talk with your Frenchman issue.”
“Yeah but I didn’t go above the surface and have a chat with him while letting him caress my face.” I sighed. “Lilith I worry about you.” She gently rested a hand on my scarred cheek. “You’re one of my best friends and I already almost lost you once.”
“I know.”
“Humans are dangerous. Even your human could be dangerous.” I said nothing knowing she wouldn’t believe me. “Please be more careful. Stay away from him.” I looked away from her refusing to agree with her. Pulling my arm out of her grasp I quickly swam away. “Lilith!” she called after me but I didn’t respond.
Back in my cave I took a shell and carefully placed the beads in it then put it onto the shelf with the other gifts from Sam. While I still viewed him as my human it was nice to know his name.
With a sigh I curled up on the rock I used as a bed. I refused to believe he was anything like the other humans. He couldn’t be. I closed my eyes and tried to ignore the creeping doubt from my conversation with Valerie.
-
Despite Valerie’s warnings I continued to see my human, Sam. At night I’d swim to the shore and Sam would be waiting. We’d ask one another questions or talk about our day. He’d always explain the things I didn’t understand. The days went on and more and more I enjoyed spending time with him.
I knew Valerie didn’t approve. Luckily she kept my secret and so far was the only one who knew what I was doing. I assured her I was being safe and that he wasn’t going to hurt me. He was different from the others. And so far he had proved me right.
Tonight I was laying on the rock with my tail hanging in the water listening as Sam read from a book. I felt a little bad that I had to stop him every few sentences for clarification or to explain something. He didn’t seem to mind though. In fact he almost seemed happy to.
Eventually he stopped and we remained lying next to each other silently staring at the night sky. “Why are you so curious about humans?” he asked quietly.
“I never believed they were all as bad and cruel as the elders say. And your world and species are so curious.” I slowly sat up and moved my hair behind my shoulders. As Sam sat up he briefly glanced at my chest before looking away. “Why are you humans so averse to nudity?” I asked.
“It’s not that, it’s...” He paused as if not sure how to explain. With a shrug he said, “I don’t really know. Cultural differences I suppose.” His gaze returned to me.
“So it’s not that you think I look like a monster?” He frowned.
“Why would you say that?” I looked down at my hands in my lap.
“Very few look like me.” I sighed. “Most look more human in skin tone and eyes. Much easier to pass as human,” I said referring to my grayish skin tone and eyes with black sclera. When I looked back up at him his expression had softened.
“You’re not a monster.”
“My father was,” I replied. Sam’s head tilted curiously. “He wasn’t a mer. He was… something else.”
“And your mother?”
“She was a mer.” I smiled softly as I remembered her. “Despite what everyone said my mother loved my father.”
“What happened to them?” I looked away from Sam.
“My father died when I was too young to remember. My mother…” My voice trailed off fingering the pendant given to me by my mother. “She was killed by humans not long after I came of age,” I whispered. Slowly looking up at Sam I could see a look of sympathy on his face.
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s not your fault. I know not all humans are as bad as the ones who murdered her.”
“Still… I know what it’s like to lose both parents at a young age.”
“I’m sure you weren’t ostracized by your own kind.” He shook his head.
“Because of your father?” I nodded.
“He’s the reason I don’t look like others of my kind. Most mer look almost human but me…” I sighed. “My skin is grey, my eyes are black, I have claws and gills, sharp teeth.” Whispering I said, “I’m a monster.”
“You’re not a monster,” Sam repeated reaching a hand up and traced my scars gently. “Far from it,” he said softly. A feeling I didn’t understand came over me. One I shouldn’t have for a human.
“Even if I told you I’ve eaten your kind before?” I asked as I looked away from him. His hand flattened against my cheek moving my face back to him, his thumb delicately tracing my lower lip.
“I’ve done my research.” My gaze rested on his own lips. “I’m guessing you were gonna drown and eat me?” My eyes looked up into his.
“Yes,” I replied with a fang bearing smile. He only softly smiled in response. “You’re not afraid of me.”
“Should I be?”
“I could pull you under and drown you right now if I wanted.”
“And do you?” he asked leaning close.
“Maybe,” I replied leaning close as well. He closed the gap between us, his lips softly pressing against mine. For a moment I forgot myself but I quickly came back to my senses and pulled back. He looked at me puzzled. “I’m sorry, I have to go.” I quickly slid back into the water and began swimming away.
My mind was so confused and I was panicking. I shouldn’t have felt anything for Sam. He was human and I was not. And I let him kiss me. This was not good. I didn’t know what to do.
-
The day after Sam kissed me, I went in search of Valerie and Elizabeth. As I swam along all I could think about was the kiss. I felt torn as I knew it was wrong but it didn’t feel wrong. I shouldn’t have had these kind of feelings for him. He was human and I was not.
I came across an old shipwreck and decided to check it out. “Elizabeth? You there?” I called out as I swam closer.
“Lilith?” Valerie swam up from the other side. Elizabeth’s head popped up from a hole in the deck not long after.
“Hey Lilith,” she said as she swam up to sit on the edge of the hole. “What’s up?”
“Did you finally decide to eat your human?” Valerie asked.
“No,” I replied giving her a frown.
“Oh hush Valerie,” Elizabeth said.
“He kissed me,” I blurted out. They both looked at me in shock.
“You let him do what?” Valerie asked sounding upset. “Was sitting on the rocks with him to have conversations not enough of a risk?” Elizabeth looked at Valerie then at me.
“You did what?” Elizabeth asked. “Lilith that’s taking a huge risk.”
“Risk is an understatement,” Valerie interjected. “Humans are dangerous, Lilith. You have to stop this.”
“Sam is not dangerous! He’s different from other humans.”
“Oh so it’s Sam is it?” Valerie sighed. “Well don’t forget. That’s what you said about the last human you got too close to.” My hand subconsciously covered my scarred cheek.
“Val, you know as well as I that not all humans are dangerous. Why would he kiss her if he wanted to harm her?” Elizabeth asked.
“Maybe the same reason the human that almost killed her was so nice and inviting to her.”
“He’s not like that,” I muttered.
“No? I’ve seen him Lilith. He carries a gun and he’s from that military base. You know what guns are and what humans do with them. Why would he have a gun if he wasn’t dangerous?” I remained silent. “This has to end Lilith. I care about you. I don’t want to almost lose again. You have to stop seeing him.”
“No,” I said defiantly. Shaking my head I said, “I won’t.” I turned and swam away.
“Lilith!” I heard Elizabeth call after me but I only swam faster.
-
“Lilith?” I looked up from the rock I was resting on in my cave. Elizabeth swam in from the entrance. “Are you okay?” she asked? I shrugged as I sat up. “She’s wrong you know. Not all humans are dangerous and bad.”
“Sam isn’t.”
“I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt.”
“Valerie won’t.”
“She’s just worried. Val’s had plenty of bad run ins with humans just like you and I. She’ll come around eventually.” Elizabeth smiled. “Let’s not forget she was having problems of her own with a human.”
“She probably drowned him,” I muttered.
“I doubt that.” Elizabeth sighed. “Well it’s getting dark so I’m gonna go. And maybe you should give your human Sam another visit.” I watched as she left before getting up and grabbing my bag.
As I swam along towards the shore where I always met Sam I hoped he’d be there tonight after abruptly leaving the night before. A small part of me hoped he might kiss me again. With a smile I shook the thought from my head.
When I got nearer to the shore I could hear familiar faint singing. “Oh no,” I muttered to myself as I swam faster. As I got closer and the singing got louder I knew without a doubt that it was Valerie. As the shore came into view so did Valerie.
She was swimming near the surface singing to lure him into the water. Sam’s arm was reaching down into the water just above her. “No!” I screamed as she reached up and grabbed his arm, pulling him into the water. “Let him go!” I yelled as I swam over to her.
“Why should I?” she asked as she wrapped her extra long tail around him. “Why should I let him have the opportunity to kill you?”
“Please, Valerie.” I watched Sam as he struggled trying to get free while holding his breath. He wouldn’t be able to hold it indefinitely. “Let him go.”
“No!” she growled. “He’ll get you killed or worse! And I won’t let that happen again!”
“He’s different!” As I spoke I watched as Sam managed to free one of his arms. My eyes widened when I saw what he was holding. “Don’t!” I yelled as I swam over and grabbed his arm holding the knife. While I stopped him from harming Valerie, the knife cut deep into my arm and he dropped the knife.
Valerie let go of Sam in shock. As he swam up to the surface I cradled my injured arm against my stomach. Valerie swam over to me. “I told you,” she said quietly.
“Just go away.” I turned away from her. As she swam away my gaze drifted down, the glint of the knife blade catching my eye. I slowly swam down and picked it up cautiously. Looking up toward the surface I swam back up.
When I reached the surface I cautiously reached my hand up above the water and placed the knife on the rock. I then quickly withdrew my hand, my gaze now falling on my still bleeding wound. With a sigh I swam down to gather moss and seaweed to tend to it. After carefully wrapping my wound I swam back up to the surface.
With caution I slowly peeked my head above the surface. Sam was lying on his back on the rocks breathing heavily. Slowly I swam closer to the rocks edge. His head turned when heard me swim through the water.
“Lilith?” He moved closer to the edge making me swim backwards keeping distance between us. A defeated look crossed his face as he sat back. When he saw the knife he slowly picked it up and put it back in its sheath on his hip. Returning his gaze to me he quietly said, “I’m sorry.” Turning away slowly I dived below the surface and swam away.
When I reached my cave I curled up on my bed. Maybe Valerie was right. Sam might have cut me by accident but he was going to hurt Valerie. But she was going to kill him. I was feeling so confused and hurt. My arm throbbed in pain from my injury. With a sigh I decided to sleep. If my arm was still bad in the morning I’d go see Elizabeth of Valerie.

I had planned on going to see Elizabeth and Valerie but instead chose to aimlessly swim around. My arm still hurt but it was healing. I just didn’t want to give Valerie the satisfaction of being right about Sam. As my heart began to ache again I hugged myself. I had hoped more than anything he had been different. But the wound on my arm proved otherwise.
Sighing heavily I swam faster not caring where I was going. All I wanted was to escape the inevitable truth. All I could hear in my head was Valerie saying I told you. Why did she have to be right? Why did I have to fall for another human’s tricks? Why did I have to fall for him?
As much as I was in denial I had fallen in love with him. This only made everything hurt even more. Truth was my heart was broken and there was nothing I could do to fix it.
Swimming along trying to ignore my heartache I heard the sound of something in distress. I immediately recognized the sound as a shark the humans called great whites. Most mer avoided sharks because they were too dangerous. I however was fond of them and quickly swam towards the noise.
The shark was caught on a hook from a human boat. As it struggled against the hook I swam over and tried to calm it. “Whoa easy boy, easy.” I gently rubbed it’s side. “Here, let me help you.” Carefully I removed the hook from it’s mouth. “There you go. Now let’s get out of here.” The shark began to swim off but before I could I net came down around me. “No!” I shouted as I quickly became entangled in the net. The shark turned and watched, swimming closer and biting the net to try and free me.
The net started to be pulled up. Looking at the shark I said, “Go! Don’t get caught.” The shark hesitated before swimming off.
As the net broke the surface I looked up at the few humans looking over the side. One of the turned and shouted, “You are not going to believe this.” As the net was raised above the side I realized this wasn’t a fishing boat, it was a research boat. Based on the firearms some of them carried I couldn’t help but wonder if they were from the same military base as Sam.
“Holy shit,” one of the women said as she and the others all stared at me in shock. I hissed at her as she walked closer.
“What do we do?” Another man asked. I hissed and thrashed trying to free myself. The woman’s brows furrowed as she stared at me.
“We take it back with us.” She turned and walked away as a few men came over to the net. “Imagine what we could learn from studying a creature like this.” The men grabbed the net and pulled me out. Overpowering me they moved me below deck and put me into a small tank locking the lid above me.
I banged on the side of the tank but they ignored me. Curling up in a corner I hugged myself as the fear began to sink in. Whenever we’d say to each other about being killed by humans or worse, this is what we meant by worse. To be at the mercy of human scientists was considered a worse fate than death.
As I listened to the sound of the engines starting I realized there was nothing I could do. Closing my eyes I hugged myself tight. There was nothing anyone could do. I was trapped.

A/U
Do dumb things win stupid prizes
An A/U where NH never left rainbow and Achlys and gorgon never joined the military.(@poisonedtruth)
Just saying i know nothing abt russia so this is kinda a made up museum lol
"What do you know about her?" Zero asked as he held up a picture of a girl, "She's a General's Daughter, General Gromov. Why?" Confusion lingered on the face of the oldest Russian, "She has been assassinating People of high value" Zero pointed to a town in Russia "St. Petersburg is her next target located." Tachanka leaned back into his chair placing his legs onto the debriefing table, and because it's my town you came to me." He chuckled slightly, "To all of you. She is no easy target, The Army has been after her for too long. This is an unofficial Mission None knows except Harry, Ash, Nøkk, and us"
" if we catch her?"
"You bring her here. To us, Nøkk will be sent with you. She knows what to do." Zero pressed around on the tablet he held, " a museum. There will be a gala and I want you three inside. Glaz will be stationed on the building to the North, Kapkan will place traps around the VIP room, Tachanka will be inside with the VIP as one of his guards, and Fuze you're with Tachanka. Nøkk will try to find out where and when She will arrive and wander around the building."
Tachanka stands up with a groan, "When will we be going"
"How soon do you want to be back home?" Zero looked at the tablet he held.
"You Ready Gorg?" Achlys asked as she Fixed a drink, "Mate, I'm always ready" she adjusted her scope with a smirk, "Got a view of the target.. and oh shit.." they lifted their head from the scope, "We got a problem, Rainbows here." She spoke through their coms to the Russian, "Блядь.. how many?" She gave the man his drink and continued cleaning the bar, "Four on sight and a sniper, spotted him being dropped off on a building to the North." She looked to her scope to the Operatives entering the building, "Right, Take care of him last. I want his mates dead first if needed."
"Sure thing boss, I'll keep an eye out for ya" the other giggled, "Love.. you know how i hate hearing you call me that right?" Achlys shook her head with a smile, "You know I'm just teasin ya"
"I Know, now focus My sweet serpent"
While cleaning, she didn't notice the men approaching her, "Four shots of vodka and a mint julep sweetheart." The man who spoke was non other than Kevin McNeely. a Well known Businessman in America. A corrupt man is what he was, as many others, "Of course! Would you like to pay or open a tab?" A forced smile covered her face, "Cash." His Bodyguard spoke with a Thick Russian accent, "Alright, take a seat as I fix you're drink Sir." She nodded and turned her back to the man to take a bottle of bourbon and vodka, Mixing the cocktail she places the glass in front of the Man with a lemon on the side of the glass. Next, she poured the vodka shots and did the same, "That would be 35 dollars, sir." As achlys reached out to give him the bill, the bodyguard grabbed it out of her hand. "Call me Kev darling" He said as he drank from his glass, "I will kill that cunt" gorgon said with an obvious frown. Achlys just giggled.
"Moving VIP to his Suite." Tachanka said, "Copy that. Still haven't found the girl" Nøkk said as she moved through the halls, "Nothing suspicious on my radar" Kapkan said, " I have an uneasy feeling guys I won't lie" Glaz said as he scanned through the windows, Nøkk agreed. "Just continue keeping watch, Report anything suspicious immediately," Tachanka said. "You boys have a thick Russian accent. Where are you from exactly." Kevin asked Tachanka and fuze who looked unphased by his attempt at small talk, "Not Talkative, hm?" Kevin sat down in his suites office chair that had a big window behind him, "coming up" Kapkan said, "When you arrive place you're EDD" Tachanka spoke as he stood next to the door with fuze. "I'll keep roaming. And whatever happens, catch. The. Girl" Nøkk spoke.
"Hey, Mike! Can you cover at the front? I need to get some food, I'm starving, " Achlys said to her coworker, "Sure, make sure you're back before they notice you're gone, boss, " he said and took Achlys old spot. As She made her way to the lockers to change, she asked her lover, "You have the charge placed in the Powerbox?" Opening her locker to retrieve a smaller version of gorgons venom play and her Balaclava, a hum leaves gorgons lips and achlys nods at that. putting the mask on. Making her way up to the VIP suite with a Cart filled with Alcohol And Candy, she knocks on the door, Tachanka opens it. "Hi! I'm just here to bring sweets and drinks up!" Tachanka looked at her before placing a hand on the cart."We'll take the car -" "Let the women in! " Kevin said with a wave of his hand, and Tachanka let go. "Hey, sweetheart, Watcha got there, hm?" Kevin eyed the woman as she pushed the cart in the room, "I have some vodka, a few pre-made cocktails, Russian chocolate, and a few other sweets" Achlys Smiled at the Man, "Would you like me to pour you some whiskey Kev?" Of course, the sickening pervert smile. "Sure. What's up with the mask?" He said as he propped his head on his hands, "There's a masquerade ball going on downstairs, and The Boss wanted us to wear these. " She points at the mask. And kev nodded, While pouring Kev A drink, she spilled some of the whiskey, "Im so so sorry!" She panicked and wiped the spill with a rag that hung from her belt, wiping her wet hands on her pants. She pressed the button for the power box. "C'mere darling!" Kev said, grabbing achlys her arm and pulling her close. Leading her behind his desk, "It's me! dont shoot!" Kapkan yelled from outside the door as he slowly opened it. "Nøkk! Do you have any idea where the target is?" Tachanka asked over the comms, "No, Im still searching, " she said, her voice calm. Not like the others. "Glaz you?"No. Tachanka, how many people are supposed to be in the room?" Glas asked his voice low, "Five. Why?" As tachanka asked the other male, the light turned on, "Check the VIP!" Nøkk said through the comms as she came running up to the Suite, Tachanka walked over to the desk, peering behind it only to find a dead VIP and No Worker. "VIP dead. We failed." Tachanka said with a sigh.
"Tachanka, The VIP's bag! Is it still there?"
"Niet"
"The Bag has a tracker in it, if they didn't remove it i can find them!"
"Did they transfer the agreed-upon amount?" Achlys asked as she sat in their haven, "Uh yeah, We got the money Darlin" Gorgon said to their lover before placing her phone down, "What's in that bag anyway? Doesn't seem all that 'mportant to me?" She leaned on the table closer to Achlys whos searching the bag thoroughly, "Aha! Нашел хорошие вещи!" Achlys lifted two plastic bags out of the handbag, "Ugly thing" gorgon mumbled. "This my dear! Is the gooood shit" Achlys said with a smile as she opened one of the plastic bags, "Smell it" Achlys held the open bag to gorgons face who took a deep breath, "Is that?-" "Cannabis? Fuck yeah, Was probably expensive too. shit smells too good to be cheap" Achlys smiled, "And the other bags good ol' Cocaine!" Achlys lifted the other bag, "Put. That. Shite. Away." Gorgon said a death stare drilling through Achlys, "Alright! Calm down любовь!" Achlys threw the bag to the ground far away and pecked her Lover on the forehead, "We good?" Achlys caressed her cheek, Admiring her lover who leans into her touch. "Sure, if I get the good side of the bed tonight" Gorgon Cuckled, "Fine. Проклятье"
"Want a joint?" Achlys asked as she shook the bag up and down, "Sure Darlin" gorgon stood up from the table to lie down in their shared bed While achlys Rolled a joint, "Sooo Still crushing On That Singaporean Military dude?" Achlys giggled, "Ya still haven't forgotten that one?" Gorgon groaned with a smile as Her lover Lied down beside her, "Nope! He was kinda cute tho won't lie!" Achlys Said before Taking a drag of the now lit joint and passing it to Gorgon, "Sure he was But different work settings and all you know is wouldn't work out" gorgon Let out a sigh the smoke lingering in the air before disappearing, " Either way I'm Happy with Ya. Wouldn't trade that for nothin'" gorgon smiled and gave the Russian the joint, "Yeah Suree~" Achlys teased running a hand up and down gorgons side. " I ain't a liar babe" gorgon chuckled moving a strand of hair behind Achly's ear, as She took a drag from the joint. "How do you always manage to look so fucking hot hm?" Achlys said with a smile, her eyes fixated on the ones of the Australian. Pushing Gorgons shoulder softly to signal for her to turn on her back, Achlys Climbed onto her lap. Her hands tracing gorgons body, the joint thrown and disregarded onto the other plastic bag. Burning into the Bag, burning the substance inside it. The fumes lingerd in the air as the Two were caught in a makeout session.
"Glaz, Eyes on Target building?" "Affirmative Nøkk, no Movement inside." Glaz Zoomed in, watching for any movement, "Kap, Tachanka, Fuze You're with me." Nøkk said as she moved closer to the door, Kapkan and Tachanka following close behind. Leaning against the wall next to the door Nøkk signals For Kapkan to Break down the door and he does, Only to stop as soon as he entered the house, "Gorgon Look! A Butterfly!!!" Achly's pointed to a fly as she sat cross-legged on the desk, And gorgon on The bed. "That's a Cricket Hello?!" Gorgon flung her hands in the air, "Nøkk. They are High. Like Really High." Kapkan said with a slight smirk, "I can see that Kap, Grab em" Nøkk pointed at them before kapkan and fuze went up to each one, "Your mask looks hot!" Achlys threw her hand at Fuze's Mask to which he just Cuckled, "Спасибо" Fuze grabbed achlys her arm, "Lets go" Nøkk turned her back walking away as kapkan and Fuze Tragged the two Away.
Achlys and gorgon giggled their life away in the back seat, swaying from one side to the other with their upper bodies. "We're going on a trip in our Favorite rocking ship! Маленький Эйнштейн, понимись на борт, приготовься исследовать " (Little einstein, climb on board get ready to explore) Achlys sung while Gorgon leaned her head onto Achlys, falling asleep right away. "Пять, четыре, три-.." "What are you counting down for?" Kap looked at Achlys from the Rear View mirror, "Два.. один"
The car stops, rolling out its speed before stopping in the middle of the road. Stepping out of the car, fuze goes to check the engine to find nothing wrong with it. Walking back to sit in the backseat of the car, fuze stops. His brows furrowed as he watched how Tachanka held achlys close while the three of them slept, "Sasha" Kap said loud enough to sir the Russian awake, "Извинения"(Apologies) Tachanka moved pushing the two girls off him. Continuing the ride, Achlys spoke up, "The car broke down because you were in the middle of nowhere. It's common for cars to break down for a bit in these woods, especially electro cars." She snuggled closer to her lover as the car was cold. "How would you know?" Nøkk asked, but her question was ignored.
"Why did you kill him." His hands slammed down onto the desk, her hands tied down to it with cuffs. "Why should I tell you, hm?"
"Why shouldn't you tell me?"
"Why dont you let me go?"
A sigh left his lips, obviously frustrated as this would go nowhere. Both girls held silent for the last hour. How long will they last?
"Let Grim take over, They'll be talking in no time" kali said, impatient with Rainbows way. "We can't torture her. Again, her father is a general. Even if she's a criminal, we still have orders." Ash pinched the bridge of her nose in frustration, "Yes, but we can torture her little girlfriend," Grim said. Signaling with his hands to the green haird woman through the CCTV, "After all we won't hurt the his Daughter but get her to talk."
Achlys watched as They dragged gorgon in the room, sitting her in a metal chair with car batteries on each side. "Gorg! you good gorgeous?" Achlys yelled, a worrying look being held in her eyes, "im fine, luv" gorgon smiled at her.
"You either talk now or 'Gorg' will get hurt. Badly."
Achlys laughed at that, "You wouldn't." A man with a German flag on his shoulder lowerd to his knees to attach the wires to the metal chair, "You can't." "Oh yeah? Why's that"
"Becausd my father will kill you, you may not be torturing me physically. But you are mentally." Achlys smiled, a knowing look on her face that they had no other options except wait. "Grab her and move her back to her room." The old man in front of her signaled to the German, who followed his orders immediately. As soon as gorgon and the german left the room, Achlys leaned back in her chair, "Whats you're name sir?" She asked. "You call me Zero, little lady."
"You know zero? Kev, he had a bounty on his head," She said, scanning over her fingernails, picking on the skin that irritated her. Zero is now watching her with intruige, "Of course murder is bad, I agree with that." Achlys chuckled, leaning back in her chair as best as she could, "But.. how would you feel knowing you had the chance to stop bad man but didn't?" Her posture calm, but her eyes held anger. "A bad man you say, What'd he do." Zero leaned on the table, his head tipped to the side to get a better look at the woman before him. She laughed "Oh the list is long, alright." She lifts her hand, starting to count with her fingers, each thing she said. "Human trafficking, money laundering." She stops talking, thinking for a while until a smile creeps onto her face, "And extortion!" Zero nodded, "Why didn't you call police and instead decided to murder him?"
"Pschh," she waved her hand dismissively. "I wouldn't call it murder! I'd call it helping the people! And the police were aware of his doings, just like your spetznas men." Zero raised an eyebrow at that, "Shu, Maxi, Tima, and Alex! They knew, but since they decided not to say anything to you or the higher up, none happened." Achlys stood up, her hand free from the chains, "Its sad too, you know? You people are Rainbow, the people supposed to protect 'em" Zero backed away. "Dont worry, I won't hurt you! Im not a bad dude, more of a vigilante if anything." She sat back down, kicking her legs onto the table, "Let's make a deal, yeah? Me and gorg stay 'ere for a while. Help you and your teletubbies with the bad guys for a year. After that, we're free to go if we wanna. Soundin' good?" Zero looked at her, a sigh leaving his lips, "you'll call your whole gang here, and I'll talk to my superior." He places a phone onto the table and walks out towards harrys office.

Concern (R6 Oc Fanfic)
A silly little one-shot I thought of when I took a walk just a few minutes ago. This is just for laughs and none of this is actually how Nav tells them that she likes Kapkan.
other oc mentions: Samka @tachankas-whore , Gorgon @lethal-justice , and Lilith @illmetbymoonlight
"Ah... I can't believe me and Alexander have been together for this long now!" Samka said putting her hands together with a big smile on her face.
"Congrats!" Lilith said sitting back, her arms slung around the back of the couch. "I remember when Sam and I got together." she brought up one of her hands and ran it through her own hair. Samka chuckled then turned to Gorgon.
"Don't you like Lion? You should ask him out already ya know?"
Gorgon looked up with an unamused look on her face.
"Shut it. I'll do it when I do it." She huffed out and crossed her arms. "Ya know what?" Gorgon shifts her body towards Nav, who had been scrolling through her phone silently the whole time.
"Nav, do you even like anyone?"
Nav's head shot up.
"Oh um... it's unimportant..."
The three girls looked at her. Samka rose an eyebrow. Lilith put both of her hands in her lap and leaned forward.
"Okay, that's a lie..." Gorgon said, crossing her arms.
Nav tried looking away, all of their eyes were burrowing into her. She waved her hand.
"Oh come on just tell us!" Samka said, interested in what she was going to say.
Nav put both of her feet up on the couch and held her knees to her body, almost as if she was trying to make herself smaller.
" I said it's not important..." Nav squeaked out.
"Yes, it is," Gorgon leaned closer to her.
Nav's eyes went wide, her brows furrowed.
"OKAY FINE!" Nav threw up her hands, "I have a massive crush on Kapkan okay?!"
Everyone stopped...
It was silent.
"What..." Lilith finally spoke up. Gorgon and Samka looked back and forth at each other before their eyes went back to Nav.
"I don't want to sound rude but please tell me you're joking..." Gorgon finally said. "I mean... doesn't he collect knives... That's a bit worrying and that's coming from me."
Nav put her head in her lap. "...Damnit..." she mumbled.
Samka got up and sat next to her, patting her back. "Hey, it's alright we all have our...uh...types."
"Yea and Nav's is people who are emotionally unavailable who collect knives," Gorgon said sitting back and letting out a huff. Lilith gave out a soft laugh as everything was going on.
Nav could not look at any them in the face for 3 days after this incident

A Moment on the Training Field
Featuring: Valerie "Gorgon" (@lethal-justice), Ace, Lion, and Jaimie "Notch" (me) A/N: Just a short little drabble based on a conversation Ice and I had about Jaimie always getting shot lol.
--
"Why is everyone always fucking shooting me?" Jaime pops her head out from cover and takes a few unaimed shots in the direction of Silver Team, "I mean, I've been shot like 16 times during these exercises!"
"It's because you don't hide well, mate!" Valerie's voice carries across the field as Jaimie ducks down next to Håvard behind the concrete barrier.
"That is not true!"
"It kind of is, elskling," Håvard slides another clip into his rifle and Jaimie scoffs in response.
"You are all so full of it," she argues, and Håvard sighs in exasperation.
Valerie glances at Olivier, who grins and jerks his head toward the barrier where the couple bickers. The two of them creep to the next cover and the former pulls a flashbang grenade from her vest.
"I'm just saying, I get hit because I'm out there making moves while you guys hide!" Jaimie snarls as she reloads her rifle.
"The point is not to get hit at all!" Håvard snaps.
Jaimie swats at him and he swats back, the two of them too lost in the bickering to notice the metal sphere that rolls into their cover.
"Let's just get this-" Jaimie pauses and her eyes widen as they focus on it, "Is that a grenade?"
BANG
Their cover is bathed in an almost atomic brightness that Harry can see from the crow's nest.
Jaimie drops to the ground in agony, shielding her eyes as Håvard cries out and dramatically throws himself out from behind the barrier.
"Okay, okay," Jaimie squeezes her eyes shut and pinches the space between them with her thumb and forefinger, "Maybe you guys are right."
"Maybe?" Olivier stands over her with a wide grin painted on his smug face.
"I hate you," Jaimie reaches her hand up blindly and the GIGN operator helps her to her feet as Valerie prods Håvard with her boot until he rolls over and gets up on his hands and knees.
"The feeling is mutual."

Sunken Ships and Loose Lips
R6S Oc Fanfic
Valerie is owned by @lethal-justice
Mention of Lilith who is owned by @illmetbymoonlight
Lying on the bottom of the ocean. Slowly being lost to time. A large ship sits there. Unmoving. Unwavering. Scratches and bubbles came up from one of the holes in the deck. Metal snapping, more bubbles shot up hitting something that was swimming above the ship.
"Elizabeth?" Valerie yelled down at the ship, "For fuck sake it's cold here..."
Elizabeth's blonde head poked out of the hole. Her grey-green eyes looked up at Valerie.
"Oh hey," She pushed herself out of the ship, her feathered tell fluttering behind her slowly.
"I need to talk to you about something, recently, um... There is this French guy I tried drowning recently, but like... I couldn't bring myself to do it. I don't know what's going on!"Elizabeth listened to Valarie's worries. Slowly sinking back down to the ship, sitting on it.
"I swear to god if I am catching feelings for... for this...THING... I don't know what I will do! What do I do?" Valerie quickly turned towards the other mermaid sitting on the battleship.
Elizabeth shrugged, "I don't know... I haven't dealt with this before. I don't bother with humans. They're too much trouble. It's just best to watch them from afar and leave them be." Elizabeth crossed her arms before lazily letting them hang. "Then again I don't go out of my way to drown people."
"Now that's a fucking lie." Valerie crossed her arms.
Elizabeth looked away, knowing that she was caught. "Okay I haven't drowned someone in a while, but my point still stands." Her tail twitched, sending a few bubbles up.
" Fuck it, I'm going to go ask Lilith for advice..." Valerie swam off quickly, leaving Elizabeth alone on the battleship. She shrugged and swam back into the hole, going back to whatever she was doing.

I absolutely love that Lion request you wrote, thankyou! I could ask for more but-
Now I'm in love with your oc writings so can I request for you to write about Notch and Gorgon instead? (Since you detest that man so much so I'll spare you the pain🤣)
Especially when Notch found out that Gorgon joined Nighthaven, same time as the Sisters In Arms cinematic. It's all up to you! <3
Pairings: NONE (though mentions of Ace and Notch being together) Word Count: 700? Summary: Jaimie (my OC) learns that Valerie (@lethal-justice) and Håvard have joined the Nighthaven defectors.
--
"You know, they're not all bad, J," Valerie glanced up from her workbench at Jaimie, who scowled.
"They're PMCs, Val, they're all the same. Fast and loose, no rules-"
"I mean...you like Håvard, don't you?" Valerie grinned widely and dodged the archery glove that was lobbed at her head.
"He's different. You're different," Jaimie paused to adjust the broadhead on her arrow and winced when she pricked her finger on the sharp edge, "I don't trust Kali-"
"But you trust me, right?"
"Of course!" Jaimie scoffed, "I just...I've lost enough friends through the years. I don't need to lose any more."
"They've made their choice," Harry pushed his glasses up on the bridge of his nose as he paced in front of the operators, "We ignored the Nighthaven situation and now our comrades have decided to depart from our organization."
"No," Ash folded her arms and stepped forward from the crowd, "You ignored the Nighthaven situation. I warned-"
Harry waved a dismissive hand and Ash scowled as she stepped back into line. Jaimie glanced at her and offered her a reassuring nod. Truth be told, she was barely holding it together herself. The news of the defection had made her heart drop into her gut.
Valerie, Håvard-
She shook her head to clear it and returned her attention to Harry as he droned on about sticking together and staying focused. Ever the optimist, he was acting as if this wasn't an enormous blow to Rainbow, not just in terms of numbers, but in terms of morale.
Most of the people standing in the briefing room had lost someone they were close to.
Jaimie glanced at Lion, who was staring solemnly at the floor; he looked defeated, as if the very will to live had been stripped from him with the loss of Lera and Valerie.
Harry finished his speech and the room began to empty slowly as operators filtered out and returned to their respective workstations. Jaimie lingered, waiting for Lion in the doorway. He shuffled over and when his eyes met hers, she felt her a tightness in her chest.
The two of them had had their differences, certainly. In fact, Jaimie had said things to him that she now wished she could take back.
"Olivier-" Jaimie searched for the words, but they didn't come. Her mind returned to Håvard and she felt a lump in her throat.
Lion didn't wait for her to speak. To her surprise, he pulled her into a tight embrace. For a moment, she stood, stunned, before returning the gesture and wrapping her arms around his broad frame.
"I can't-" tears welled in Jaimie's eyes, "It doesn't feel real."
"I know..." Olivier murmured and she felt him shake slightly, as if holding back tears himself, "I thought..." he trailed off and Jaimie finally pulled away from the embrace.
She wiped her eyes hurriedly on the back of her hand and offered Olivier a weak smile.
He didn't return it.
--
Jaimie clutched the phone in her hand and waited, watching the screen with her lip pulled between her teeth.
Nothing.
"Damn it, Håvard," she bit back tears and powered the screen off before tossing her phone onto the bed and burying her face in her hands.
How could he do this?
No word, not a fucking word about what was happening.
Jaimie fell backward onto the bed and stared at the ceiling. She couldn't recall a time in her life when she'd been this miserable. Maybe during high school when some idiot boyfriend had-
A knock on the door to her quarters jarred her out of her slump and she sat up with a jolt.
"Who is it?"
"Gustave."
Jaimie crossed the room and opened the door to reveal Gustave, who was clad in civilian clothes and looked rather out of place.
"What is it?"
"I wanted to check on you-" he gestured vaguely and she raised an eyebrow, "After all of this...I know many of you are struggling."
Jaimie didn't move from the doorway. She wasn't in the mood to be psychoanalyzed, and, quite frankly, she just wanted to hole up in her quarters and get drunk. She wondered briefly if Håvard and Valerie felt even half as shitty as she and the others at Rainbow did.
"Did Harry tell you anything more than he told the rest of us peons?" The words tumbled out of Jaimie's mouth before she could stop herself and she watched as Gustave's face shifted, almost imperceptibly, "I'm- I'm sorry. I didn't mean-"
"Only what he told you," He replied simply and Jaimie felt a pang of guilt radiate across her chest, "I know you were close with Gorgon and Ace-"
Gustave lingered on that sentence for a moment before continuing, "I just wanted to remind you to take care of yourself."
With that, he departed, and Jaimie was left feeling even emptier than she had before.
--
Valerie stared out the window at the night sky as streetlights flashed by, illuminating her face. She felt a writhing sense of worry building in her gut as the car sped away from the stadium. One that burned hot and impossible to ignore.
No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't scrub Jaimie or Olivier's faces from her memory. They had looked so...
Betrayed.
And, she supposed, it was a betrayal in a sense. Valerie had always been loyal to Nighthaven first and foremost, and the others knew that.
It didn't make her feel any better.
Valerie sighed and reached into her bag, fumbling for a moment before retrieving a tattered photograph. It was a polaroid that Grace had insisted on snapping at the last team building event.
Valerie ran her fingers along the faces- Mozzie, Thermite, Ace, Notch, Dokka, and Lion. They had been tasked with a problem solving exercise together in the stadium. Considered the underdogs, they had subverted everyone's expectations and beaten the record time held only by Harry's old team decades previous.
Valerie felt a smile tug at the corners of her mouth as her eyes scanned over the photo. Lion was holding bunny ears behind Notch's head. Ace was lying in a mock-seductive pose on the ground in front of the group while giving a thumbs up. Thermite was giving hard rock hands while Mozzie posed as if he was holding an invisible guitar. She, Dokka, and Notch were grinning widely, all holding the enormous golden trophy that read "1st Place".
Valerie swallowed, hard, and put the photo back in her bag. Slowly, the streetlights became fewer and farther between as they entered more desolate territory on approach to the airstrip.
"You're making the right decision, you know," Kali said smugly as Valerie and the others exited their vehicles and approached the idling jet, "Let the children at Rainbow hold on to their petty grudges. You all are on to something bigger and better!"
Valerie glanced up at Håvard, who was staring blankly into the horizon. His face was devoid of his usual boyish grin. She wondered if he was feeling the same fears she was.
"Now come," Kali gestured to the jet where Smoke and Ela were already waiting-
"Today is the first day of the rest of your lives!"
