My Fair Lady (1964)
Date Watched: 23rd July 2017
Referenced in: 2x09, 3x13, 5x05 and 6x12
Rating: ★★★★★★
I adore this film. I’ve seen it many times and ever time I watch it I enjoy it even more. It is probably my favourite movie musical of all time. I’d love to see it on stage. The story is strong and although a long film, moves quickly. I ove to hate Henry Higgins and Eliza’s transformation is great, even beyond speech with the last 20 minutes of her being very empowered (and speaking some truths, see quotes below) and I love the round circle of the slippers. I enoy the uses of repeated lines... I’m a good girl I am, I’m dashed, and by george.
Amazing film.
Eliza Doolittle: I sold flowers; I didn't sell myself. Now you've made a lady of me, I'm not fit to sell anything else.
Eliza Doolittle: The difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she is treated.

2x09, Run Away, Little Boy (2001) Rory quotes the famous line to Tristan "By George, I think he's got it" when she finally gets through to him about Dean. RORY: You know what, forget it. TRISTIN: Hey, Rory. RORY: There is no point in talking to you. I knew that, yet I tried. Won't happen again. TRISTIN: You don't want me to tell Dean that we kissed. RORY: By George, I think he's got it. TRISTIN: Okay, if that's what you want.
3x13, Dear Emily and Richard (2003) Lorelai and Rory discuss their Europe trip quoting ‘the rain in Spain’ line. RORY: But we want to be spontaneous. Jump a train to Paris, head off to Spain. LORELAI: Oh no, it’s raining in Spain. But since the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain. . . RORY: Looks like Italy for us! LORELAI: Mamma mia!
5x05, We Got Us a Pippi Virgin (2004) Lorelai says, "By George, I think she's got it!" LORELAI: Why didn't you mention this to Mom at dinner? Maybe she would have been less panicked about what he's doing and the now-infamous glitter vest. RORY: I don't want to open a can of worms. LORELAI: How would that open up a can of worms? RORY: If I told her what I said, I'd have to tell her I had lunch with him, a lunch I had previously not informed her of and that would have made her jealous and defensive. The less you tell Grandma, the better. LORELAI: [She sits up with a mock gasp] By George, I think she's got it.
6x12, Just Like Gwen and Gavin (2006) Lorelai quotes Eliza's "the rain in Spain" line. LORELAI: What are you doing back? I thought you were stranded at your sister's. TAYLOR: Lorelai, please. (starts to push her back in an alley) LORELAI: Weird time for line dancing. TAYLOR: Fine. OK, I'm back. I got lucky last night and caught a plane out of Maine. LORELAI: Even with the rain in Spain? TAYLOR: Will you be serious for second?

Pinocchio (1940)
Date Watched: 6th February 2017
Referenced in: 1x19, 3x22, 4x06 and 5x05 (i may have missed some cause i usually work out the references from IMDb and it doesn’t have any for Pinocchio even though I’ve noticed multiple)
Rating: ★★★★☆
Never seen Pinocchio. As I’ve said in previous reviews my Disney film watching history has been limited by my sisters. I vaguely knew the premise, puppet comes alive, to become a real boy he has to be good forever (or that’s what I knew) I love Jiminy - he makes me giggle. Poor old Gepetto too, i don’t like it when old men are sad :( and man this puppet is dumb, and really doesn't listen.
I had no idea about the donkey thing? And I didn’t know Wish Upon a Star was from this film! Also I wonder how many kids tried that rock thing so they could walk on the ocean floor too!
Enjoyable disney film, would watch again, 4 stars.

1x19, Emily in Wonderland (2001) Lorelai references the nose growing when lying part of the film when saying she believes Rachel. LUKE: I've heard the speech. I know the speech by heart. LORELAI: Well, I think she means it this time. LUKE: You don't know her like I do. LORELAI: I don't. But she seems sincere. LUKE: How do you know? LORELAI: Her nose didn't grow. LUKE: Why are you taking her side? LORELAI: I'm not taking her side.
3x22, Those Are Strings, Pinocchio (2003) Title reference and Lorelai mentions Pinocchio when talking to Rory about her ‘no strings attached’ loan from Emily and Richard. RORY: I just left them now. It's a done deal LORELAI: Rory, honey, do you understand, the Gilmores do nothing altruistically. Strings are attached to everything. RORY: There are no strings. LORELAI: No strings? RORY: No. I just have to pay them back starting five years after I graduate, and I have to start going back for Friday night dinners. LORELAI: Um, hello, Pinocchio, those are strings.
4x06, An Affair to Remember (2003) Lorelai jokes about the nose growing in this film and Emily mentions the filming when scolding the humour EMILY: Is this the off-white or the cream? LORELAI: Uh, the off-white. The cream is more creamy. I cut those myself so they could be adjusted either way. I mean, they could be adjusted smaller. Taller would be tougher once they're cut, but, uh, if they tell a lie, they'll shoot right back up. EMILY: I assume you'll have servers. LORELAI: Yes, we will. EMILY: I assume you'll instruct your servers to omit the Pinocchio humor. LORELAI: Yes, we will.
5x05, We Got Us a Pippi Virgin (2004) Lorelai lies to Luke about eating her grapefruit, noses are mentioned. LORELAI: Hey, bring us some coffee, and I promise this grapefruit will be eaten. LUKE: [skeptical] Okay. [Luke exits] LORELAI: How long is my nose? RORY: Very.

Dances with Wolves (1990)
Date Watched: 28th August 2017
Referenced in: 2x12, 5x05 and 7x04
Rating: ★★★★★
Wow. The second of the three Costner movies for three faces of Costner movie night did not disappoint. I was a bit worried at the start as I could only find the directors cut, making it an hour longer than the theatrical release but at no point in this movie did I notice the length of it. Incredibly interesting film which held my attention throughout the entire 4 hours. Costner was great in it as well as all the Native Americans, Graham Greene, Rodney Grant etc. It was funny at times and heart wrenching nearer the end. I loved Cisco and Two Socks - the animals were beautifully used in the story. I wasn’t too keen on the Buffalo hunting scene as I always feel sorry for the animals but it makes me feel a little better that the buffalo that charges was running towards its favourite treats... Oreos. Costner did all his own riding as well which is very impressive and did a great job directing it!
I wonder what the third Costner film has in store!
Edit: Found this tidbit on imdb trivia... To prevent any possible animal cruelty Kevin Costner's Tig Productions spent $250,000 on animatronic buffalo to be used in the climactic buffalo hunt. <-- That’s brilliant!

2x12, Richard in Stars Hollow (2002) Lorelai suggests renting it for a "Three Faces of Costner" movie night. RORY: Hmm, next. LORELAI: The three faces of Costner – Bull Durham, Dances with Wolves, The Postman. Tom Petty playing Tom Petty, that great big speech about ‘Once upon a time there was a thing called mail.’ It’ll make you laugh, it’ll make you cry, it’ll make you wanna mail something.
5x05, We Got Us a Pippi Virgin (2004) Zach tells Lane that her seeing him cry during the film is proof that she knows him better than even his parents. ZACH: You've known me for two years. You've seen the good and the bad. LANE: Oh, yeah! I mean, yes. ZACH: You probably know me better than most people, including my parents. Neither of them have seen me cry during "Dances With Wolves," and you have. LANE: What's this about, Zach? ZACH: You, of all people, know that it takes me a while to process things, okay? You saw how long it took me to get that chord change in "Brian's Tune."
7x04, 'S Wonderful, 'S Marvelous (2006) Arguing that a film should be more than its title, Lorelai cites the film, saying it wasn't just one long wolf dance. CHRISTOPHER: Okay Lor, I respect your very valid feelings about snakes. LORELAI: Thank you. CHRISTOPHER: But I have to say we were fairly warned. LORELAI: No! No! A movie should not just be its title. "Driving Miss Daisy" didn't all take place in the car, "Dances With Wolves" wasn't one long wolf dance. But this was nothing but snakes, snakes, relentless snakes, snakes on a plane. Snakes, snakes, snakes on a plane!
