Working Girl (1988)
Tumblr media
Date Watched: 7th February 2017
Referenced in: 1x19 and 6x05
Rating:  ★★★★☆
First off all the amount of shirtless Harrison Ford in this film, yes, thank you, more please. Second of all, this star studded cast is BRILL. I love Sigourney Weaver even though she’s a dick in this film. The whole Jack thing was a bit predictable but it was a funny feel good film.
Let the river run bitchez.

1x19, Emily in Wonderland (2001) Lorelai references the film after seeing Emily in a suit and sneakers. LORELAI: I can't picture you at Teriyaki Joe's . . .or in jogging shoes. What's up working girl? EMILY: Well, Rory decided that we should take the grand tour of the town; that meant walking. I hope you don't mind, I borrowed your socks also. LORELAI: Oh, I don't mind. I wish I had a camera, but I don't mind. RORY: I'm gonna go show her the grounds. LORELAI: Oh yeah, good. On the way back, show her the gym. Jump on the treadmill. RORY: See you later. LORELAI: Make sure you stretch first.
6x05, We've Got Magic to Do (2005) Paris says she watched Working Girl to prepare for her first job. RORY: Hey, Paris. PARIS: Rory, I clocked in. RORY: Cool! PARIS: They gave me this card, and it had my name on it. And I shoved it in the clock thing, and it made the punchy sound, and I'm officially on the job. RORY: Great! PARIS: And I'm prepared too. I was a little nervous last night about making small talk with co-workers. So I went to the video store and rented "Working Girl" and the first season of "Just Shoot Me". Got a couple of Wendie Malick bon mots that have already come in handy. RORY: Very good. Welcome. PARIS: Thanks, boss.

Pinocchio (1940)
Tumblr media
Date Watched: 6th February 2017
Referenced in: 1x19, 3x22, 4x06 and 5x05 (i may have missed some cause i usually work out the references from IMDb and it doesn’t have any for Pinocchio even though I’ve noticed multiple)
Rating:  ★★★★☆
Never seen Pinocchio. As I’ve said in previous reviews my Disney film watching history has been limited by my sisters. I vaguely knew the premise, puppet comes alive, to become a real boy he has to be good forever (or that’s what I knew) I love Jiminy - he makes me giggle. Poor old Gepetto too, i don’t like it when old men are sad :( and man this puppet is dumb, and really doesn't listen.
I had no idea about the donkey thing? And I didn’t know Wish Upon a Star was from this film! Also I wonder how many kids tried that rock thing so they could walk on the ocean floor too!
Enjoyable disney film, would watch again, 4 stars.

1x19, Emily in Wonderland (2001) Lorelai references the nose growing when lying part of the film when saying she believes Rachel. LUKE: I've heard the speech. I know the speech by heart. LORELAI: Well, I think she means it this time. LUKE: You don't know her like I do. LORELAI: I don't. But she seems sincere. LUKE: How do you know? LORELAI: Her nose didn't grow. LUKE: Why are you taking her side? LORELAI: I'm not taking her side.
3x22, Those Are Strings, Pinocchio (2003) Title reference and Lorelai mentions Pinocchio when talking to Rory about her ‘no strings attached’ loan from Emily and Richard. RORY: I just left them now. It's a done deal LORELAI: Rory, honey, do you understand, the Gilmores do nothing altruistically. Strings are attached to everything. RORY: There are no strings. LORELAI: No strings? RORY: No. I just have to pay them back starting five years after I graduate, and I have to start going back for Friday night dinners. LORELAI: Um, hello, Pinocchio, those are strings.
4x06, An Affair to Remember (2003) Lorelai jokes about the nose growing in this film and Emily mentions the filming when scolding the humour EMILY: Is this the off-white or the cream? LORELAI: Uh, the off-white. The cream is more creamy. I cut those myself so they could be adjusted either way. I mean, they could be adjusted smaller. Taller would be tougher once they're cut, but, uh, if they tell a lie, they'll shoot right back up. EMILY: I assume you'll have servers. LORELAI: Yes, we will. EMILY: I assume you'll instruct your servers to omit the Pinocchio humor. LORELAI: Yes, we will.
5x05,  We Got Us a Pippi Virgin (2004) Lorelai lies to Luke about eating her grapefruit, noses are mentioned. LORELAI: Hey, bring us some coffee, and I promise this grapefruit will be eaten. LUKE: [skeptical] Okay. [Luke exits] LORELAI: How long is my nose? RORY: Very.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Tumblr media
Date Watched: 17th February 2017
Referenced in: 1x19
Rating:   ★★★★★
Ahhhh such a good film. Seen it a couple of times and it’s always good. It’s one of those  hour movies that just fly by and it’s over before you know it. So many famous faces too - even in the random side squads. Great movie from start to finish, doesn’t half make me cry though!
With this rewatched ep 19 is done!

1x19, Emily in Wonderland (2001) Lorelai mentions this movie. RORY: Do you think you and Grandma will ever be able to talk about all the things you've gone through? LORELAI: No. RORY: You didn't even consider it. LORELAI: I'm sorry. . . . No. RORY: Why? LORELAI: Because it would just end badly. RORY: It doesn't have to. LORELAI: It would be like the first 15 minutes of Saving Private Ryan but at least those guys got to be in France.

The Grapes of Wrath (1940)
Tumblr media
Date Watched: 14th February 2017
Referenced in: 1x19
Rating:  ★★☆☆☆
I know this is referenced by Emily so i was debating whether to watch it seeing as she is probably referencing the book but it’s in IMDb top 250 so I thought what the hell. I wish I hadn’t. It was pretty boring and felt longer than 2 hours. Maybe I just didn’t get it or it’s one of those films you have to watch a couple of times but it just wasn’t for me. It did get better in the second half but I was definitely contemplating turning it off 40 minutes in.

1x19, Emily in Wonderland (2001)  Emily refers to The Grapes of Wrath while commenting on her daughter's empty refrigerator. RORY: My mom found this great shoe cleaner. It's gets out pretty much anything. Do you want something to drink, there should be some iced tea in the fridge. EMILY: Iced tea would be nice. (opens fridge) Oh my god. There's nothing in here. RORY: I know, it's a little sparse. EMILY: It's the Grapes of Wrath. RORY: Don't worry. We eat fine.

To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
Tumblr media
Date Watched: 13th February 2017
Referenced in: 1x19, 2x08 and 3x06
Rating:  ★★★★☆
I’ve started to read the book about 10 times and never got too far through, I don’t know why but the film was great - maybe I’ll try my luck at the book again. The children are cute, couldn’t stop laughing at the ham costume though so that took a little away from the forest scene. It was the film debut of Robert Duvall as well who I love and although he didn’t speak in the film he played his part perfectly.
All round enjoyable film. God bless Atticus Finch

1x19, Emily in Wonderland (2001) Lorelai mocks Rune's character, calling him "Boo Radley." when discussing with Sookie whether to give him a job. LORELAI: Well I couldn't pay him very much. SOOKIE: Well, that's okay. Maybe he could just work for, uh, room and board. LORELAI: You want him to live here? SOOKIE: No! Well, what about the old potting shed? LORELAI: The old potting shed? That's where Rory and I lived when she was a baby. It has memories and little rosebud wallpaper. I don't want Boo Radley touching my rosebud wallpaper.
2x08, The Ins and Outs of Inns (2001) Jess says that the Stars Hollow town meetings "are so 'To Kill a Mockingbird.'" (this is probs a ref to the book cause it’s Jess referencing it but slung it in here anyway) RORY: You've got this whole town down on him. JESS: Really? How did I do that? RORY: You know how you did that. JESS: I'm not really familiar with the blue book laws in this town, so you can be talking about a lot of things. Dropping a gum wrapper, strolling arm in arm with a member of the opposite sex on a Sunday. [Rory gestures to the chalk outline] Ah. What about it? RORY: You did it. The whole town knows you did it. They had a meeting about it. JESS: You actually went to that bizarro town meeting? Those things are so 'To Kill a Mockingbird.'
3x06, Take the Deviled Eggs... (2002) Rory says, "Every town needs as many Boo Radleys as they can get." when talking about the town loner. LORELAI: The town loner? LUKE: That guy still lives around here? BABETTE: Somewhere in the hills, right? LUKE: I thought he was long gone. ANDREW: No, he came into the bookstore a couple times last month, never said a word. MISS PATTY: He’s a bit creepy. TAYLOR: Very creepy. LORELAI: But he’s our Boo Radley, and we don’t have a Boo Radley, unless you count the troubadour or Pete the pizza guy or the guy who talks to mailboxes. RORY: Well, I think the point is that every town needs as many Boo Radleys as they can get.

The Lost Weekend (1945)
Tumblr media
Date Watched: 11th February 2017
Referenced in: 1x19 and 6x04
Rating:  ★★★★★
Had no idea what this was about, just that it was directed by Billy Wilder and the other films I’ve seen with him at the helm have been awesome. This was no exception. It was beautifully acted, well deserved Oscars definitely. The whole tme I was enthralled by listening to Don talk and hoping he pulled through. I love Nat, he was cool. All the dialogue was just great and spot on too! Easy 5 stars.

1x19, Emily in Wonderland (2001) Sookie compares Rune's extended stay at Jackson's to The Lost Weekend SOOKIE: Well, [Rune]'s staying with Jackson. LORELAI: Again? SOOKIE: Still. LORELAI: I thought he was only here for a weekend. SOOKIE: Yes, the lost weekend.
6x04, Always a Godmother, Never a God (2005) Lane says that in the future, Rory and Lorelai will look back at their estrangement and see it as their Lost Weekend. RORY: Yeah, yeah... I just wish, that my mom could understand that. She's so... I doubt that she will talk to me again until I am back in a dorm room with a course catalogue on my lap, if then. I don't know. Maybe we'll never talk again. LANE: You two? Oh, please. RORY: We haven't talked in weeks. LANE: It'll blow over. RORY: She didn't tell me when she and Luke got engaged. LANE: Rory, look at me. You and your mom will talk again. This rift is just nature's attempt to find some equilibrium. You and Lorelai have gone too many years without fighting. So you had to have one big fight to make up for it. Now you've had it, and soon you'll make up and then this will all be just your lost weekend.

Queen of Outer Space (1958)
Tumblr media
Date Watched: 7th February 2017
Referenced in: 1x19
Rating:  ★☆☆☆☆
Ok so a classic old timey space film, with a play on the whole men are from Mars women are from Venus. First film I’ve seen w/ Zsa Zsa in as well which was cool cause she as a person is referenced a few times in the show. There’s so much objectification of women in this film though, makes me cringe and the tracker noise is hella annoying.
It’s kinda just an hour an a half of nothing happening except some astronaut guys just talking bout how hot all the women are and basically are only valued the whole time through their appearance. And the last 10 minutes is just annoying noise.

1x19, Emily in Wonderland (2001) The bookstore plays it on Movie Night. Opening credits are seen. (The lights dim and the movie starts.) LORELAI: So if Rachel turns out to be an evil fembot and murders Luke in his sleep, I'm not responsible am I? RORY: Only in an intergalactic court. LORELAI: Good. And Rachel seems really great. . . KIRK: You are now officially disturbing not just me but every person in this theater. LORELAI: Kirk, you're the only one who's disturbed.
