August 12th 1922 saw the birth of the Scottish actor Fulton Mackay.

Fulton is remembered as the prison officer, also named 'Mackay', in the BBC television comedy series Porridge and its spin-off film, and as the lighthouse keeper in the UK version of Jim Henson's "Fraggle Rock.

Born in Paisley, e was brought up by a widowed aunt after the death of his mother. Mackay was trained as a quantity surveyor, he volunteered to join the RAF in 1941, but was rejected because of a perforated ear drum. He subsequently enlisted in the Black Watch and served for five years.

When he was demobilised, Fu;ton decided to become an actor and trained at RADA. Apart from the two roles mentioned above, he appeared in many films, such as Ben in Bill Forsyth's Local Hero, and on the stage, notably with the R.S.C. as Christofferson in Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie. Fulton also played Inspector Davidson in the Jimmy Boyle biopic A Sense of Freedom. Other Scottish shows he was in over the years were Doctor Finlay's Casebook, The Master of Ballantrae and Rob Roy.

In 1974, he was considered for the role the fourth Doctor Who, but the role went to Tom Baker instead. He was married to the Irish actress Sheila Manahan.

Some time during the first few days of January, 1974, my parents and I went to the Aldwych Theatre, London, to see the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Sherlock Holmes, the 1899 play by Arthur Conan Doyle and the American actor-playwright William Gillette. (My research indicates that performances began on Tuesday, January 1st. I'm all but certain that we saw a matinée; assuming that Wednesday is matinée day in the U.K., as it is in the U.S., then this would have had to have been on the 2nd, as we would have needed to return to Chicago no later than the 5th, so that my mother and I would be de-jetlagged and ready for school on the 7th.)

This was the first time in more than 70 years that the play had been seen in London. It was a big enough deal that the R.S.C. put out a commemorative poster:

This really was a golden age.

That was a memorable afternoon at the theater for many reasons, not all of which had to do with the play itself, or even with the performance.

The performance was very late getting started. Five minutes stretched into ten and then towards fifteen. Finally, someone emerged from behind the curtain to tell us that Trevor Peacock, who played Sidney Prince, had been in a traffic accident and wouldn't be arriving at the theater any time soon, so someone was going to read his part. I don't remember who this was: it might have been the assistant stage manager, Philip Hoare, or Stanley MacKenzie, one of two deputy stage mangers (the other was Diana Bruce). In any case, he was terrific. If you know this play, you know that Sidney Prince is a safe-cracker, and the substitute actor used the script as a prop, consulting it at intervals as though it were a user's manual for getting the job done.

We had main-floor seats. When the lights came up for intermission, we saw that the house wasn't very full (which, again, argues for a weekday matinée). Indeed, there were only two other people in our section and row — and one of them was Paddington Bear! Well, okay, it was actually a very large plush toy Paddington Bear, but there he was, in his own seat, next to a young woman. We asked if he was enjoying the play. She said yes.

The big thing here is the age of consent. From what I've seen, even if we take the accuser’s special math and use the 4-year age difference, any consensual and physical relationship between Jane and PHW was not statutory rape.

If an accused is charged with an offense under section 151 or 152, subsection 173(2) or section 271 in respect of a complainant who is 14 years of age or more but under the age of 16 years, it is a defense that the complainant consented to the activity that forms the subject-matter of the charge if the accused:

(a) is less than five years older than the complainant; and

(b) is not in a position of trust or authority towards the complainant, is not a person with whom the complainant is in a relationship of dependency and is not in a relationship with the complainant that is exploitative of the complainant.

Plainly speaking, the age of consent is 16, WITH THE EXCEPTION that 14-15 year olds can consent to sex with someone within 5 years older than them AND there is no relationship of trust, authority or dependency or any other exploitation of the young person. With the special math or the actual math of 2.5 year difference, Jane and PHW are peers. There is no grooming amongst peers AND where there is no law being broken.

He had no position of trust or authority over Jane. Simply being a few years older does not by virtue in itself mean he had any type of authority over her. He wasn’t her teacher, doctor, babysitter, or anything where he had influence (position of trust). Simply being younger does not by virtue in itself mean she was subservient to him and could not give consent to a sexual relationship with a peer.

Is being charming and nice to someone while hoping for a legal, consensual, physical relationship grooming in the accuser’s mind?

PHW and Jane were peers who met and allegedly decided to have a sexual relationship. It’s more or less the equivalent of a Freshman and a Senior hooking up/dating at four years. Some might look at it askance, but in the end it’s not illegal and it’s not a social taboo in Canada as far as I can tell (any Canadians want to chime in?). A Freshman and Sophomore at 2.5 years (the real age difference) if that makes it more palatable for you. Either way, both ranges are legal.

Whatever people might personally feel about it is irrelevant, especially if they’re not IN THE RELATIONSHIP.

The accusation of grooming is not based on law or reality.

At the very beginning a striking female cellist sits on a bench beside the tree and plays some mournful music. It is a lovely moment. Nothing in the production ever matches it. One major difficulty is that the purpose of the setting is never established. One anticipates a new avenue into the play; what one gets is just another pretty decoration, later embellished with revolving balloons and twinkling stars. But where are we? And who are all these people? The costumes seem like 19th-century Italian and Spanish adaptations, the period dances are performed with masks and swordplay (a new R.S.C. principle—when in doubt, fence), but nobody has troubled to investigate why Shakespeare set his play in Messina or what may lurk under the surface of the wit contests, horseplay, and melodramatic con-frontations.

Page 3. ---- Labor Organizations Criticized by Judge ---- Labor leaders today are more interested in battling rival unions than they are in providing for the welfare of the worker, Judge J. A. Cloutier stated in finding David Cote, Canadian Congress of Labor organizer, guilty of inducing workers of Canadian Vickers Limited to go on strike and to remain on strike. The judge then fined Cote $500 and costs, with the alternative of spending the next three months in jail.

In a 14-page judgment, Judge Cloutier pointed out that the case was the first of its kind. In view of this, he said, he did not intend to compel the defendant to pay the costs of previous infractions of the law. However, he was convinced that the public would, in the future, be confident of the court's full support.

Cote, as organizer for the Canadian Congress of Labor, His Honor said, had encouraged employes of Canadian Vickers, Limited, engaged in war production, to leave their work in July and remain away.

"The accused." Judge Cloutier stated, "through his duly authorized counsel, admitted that the employer, Canadian Vickers, Limited, mentioned in the complaint, is, and was, since and be- fore the facts which gave rise to this case, an industry covered by P.C. 3495 as amended by P.C. 1708, and consequently, the Industrial Disputes Act, Chapter 112, R.S.C., 1927, is applicable to this case."

Judge Cites Picketing His Honor emphasized that the strike was illegal, as it stopped the operation of an industry engaged in essential war work. Even the accused admitted the illegality of strikes of the kind, the court said. Many employes of the firm were affiliated with another labor labor organization and were on the point of returning to work. They were prevented from doing so, the judge continued, as the group to which the accused accused belongs decided to picket the plant and prevented employes from entering.

Cote was present at the meeting when it was decided to engage men in picketing the plants. "This fact is of the utmost importance, His Lordship noted. "Cote definitely induced the workers to re- main on strike, according to evidence. Furthermore, the accused deliberately called 'scabs,' 'saboteurs' and 'strike-breakers' all workers of a rival union who wanted to return to the jobs, it is pointed out."

Judge Cloutier was surprised to have to decide on the first case of this type. Recent strikes through- out Canada, he said, should have resulted in similar actions on be- half of industrial war plants. May Menace Social Order "One illegality results in several illegalities," the Court declared, "and one may easily understand how such an an illegality may cause troubles les which may be a hindrance to the maintenance of pub- lic peace and social order.

"In virtue of what principle and in virtue of what authority can essential war work be suspended?" Judge Cloutier asked. "One may readily understand how far these strike organizers were from the rational, sane and legal application of the right of association whose primary aim is to grant to the working class a just and equitable remuneration for their work to their employers."

Judge Cloutier said that the sentence should serve as an example. But Article 61, Chapter 112, authorizes only one fine. Sentences imposed on other charges easily exceed in severity the one which may be given to such an accusation.

"In a number of strikes, the definite purpose of these labor troubles is not so much to protect the employe and improve his financial status as to fight competitive associations," Judge Cloutier said "The only possible outcome is social disorder to which the courts must find a permanent remedy."

I don’t think PHW needs to make a statement. If the whole thing peters out because it turns out the accusers haven’t actually gone to the authorities or have an attorney for a pending tort, then suing them for defamation might not be worth it and would only bring more attention to it.

We also don’t know his whole history. It could be that these specific accusers are lying or can’t prove anything, but maybe he’s admitted something to his legal team that isn’t related that they don’t want dug up. In that instance, it’d also be better to try to just lay low for a minute and let it blow over.

What is there really for him to do or say if they don’t sue him and the authorities don’t press charges?

I don’t know for Canada, but for the US, part of getting defamation is proving damages. As far as we know, he hasn’t been cut from anything yet, nor has any job offer been rescinded. I don’t know how he’d be able to prove that some places WOULD have offered him work, if not for these accusations. The story hasn’t been picked up by any reputable newspaper, that to me says no one finds the accusations credible so far.

Besides a hit to his reputation, he hasn’t actually lost anything yet. And the hit to his reputation appears to be solely with unhinged people on Twitter and Tumblr who jump to conclusions and are proud to weaponize their ignorance. Anons and randos on the internet who may or may not have attributed to his fame and wealth.

In the grand scheme of his career, do they really matter if all they do is shout into the cesspit of Twitter and Tumblr?

When it comes to defamation, depending on who is footing the attorney bills, then it might not be worth it to go after the accusers. Especially if the accusers don’t have any money. Maybe he can get a court to order an apology and retract, but are those worth the attorney fees he probably won’t be able to recover?

Sometimes the pursuit of justice is tempered with the reality of cost.

The thing I don’t know if he can ignore is the CSAM and Revenge Porn. Can he more or less bifurcate the leaked nudes issue from the SA and rape allegations to the public? Will the government of Toronto press charges regardless because those are crimes and PHW doesn’t have a say in that instance? He can only choose to not file a tort, which would be his avenue via civil privacy laws.

If the Crown charges them for the CSAM and Revenge Porn, the accusers can’t bring up the rape allegations as they aren’t tied to what they’re on trial for, and he hasn’t been convicted regardless. The CSAM and Revenge Porn laws don’t allow for “justification” for releasing those photos.

It doesn’t specify, but I believe that also covers how they obtained the photos. If they got it in a group chat with minors, it’s irrelevant. If they released them, then they released them.

They can try to get a lighter sentence to try to tie the allegations to their state of mind, but I don’t see a judge giving notice to the SA or rape allegations if they themselves never brought a suit nor was PHW even formally charged with a crime.

i’ll definitely try to make an actual tutorial when i have the chance, but for now, much of the magic comes from RetroSupply Co’s brushes! i mostly used their ColorLab brushes for that piece (for the halftones and the dirty effects)—they’re a bit costly for brushes and are only available for Procreate or Photoshop, but i think they’re a worthwhile investment and i think(?) they have sales sometimes!

they have some tutorials online, these two in particular have helped me a lot. these are for Procreate and i use Photoshop, but the jist is essentially the same! basically they give you a chart of halftone combinations and you mix them together to get all of your colors.

R.S.C. also has some freebies which i snag up as much as i can—this has a halftone brush in it that i use a lot when i’m feeling lazy/can’t find the right color combination, as well as some brushes you can use for some weathering/wear and tear! these are a godsend too!

i also like to find vintage paper textures on google (RSC has some too, i forget if they come with the Color Lab pack or not?) and set it both as a background layer and then one on top of everything set to multiply to make everything a little more yellow.

since i was going off of the comics themselves, i grabbed a bunch of frames and tried to study the way the ink behaved and the halftone offset and stuff like that! here are some that i used for reference on that particular piece:

i know this is pretty vague, and i’ll try to make a better tutorial when i have the chance, but i hope this helps at least somewhat! you don’t need expensive brushes to make things look vintage at all, i just found that those have helped me—studying the comics themselves and pouring through old comic books/identifying the patterns in the inking has helped me immensely!
