MEGA SPOILERS FOR @magicstormfrostfire‘s FIC “Rose Drops” under the cut!!!!! The wonderful cover art I added is screenshotted from the fic, I did not draw it and all credits go to the original artist.

Ok. So. I just finished Rose Drops. And. Wow. Ok. How dare you make me feel emotions. I get TWO CHAPTERS IN and I’m already sobbing because AMY ROSE IS DEAD?? And she left Sonic and Shadow a secret roadtrip plan to make them closer???? And Vanilla is now having to be taken care of by Cream because she’s so depressed about Amy, who was like a second daughter to her?????? SOBBING. SCREAMING. BOUNCING OFF THE WALLS. THROWING UP A LITTLE BIT.

AND THEN!!! Sonic and Shadow decide to go on the roadtrip to honor Amy’s memory. And they’re going to places of sentimental value. And then Knuckles uses the Master Emerald to connect Sonic and Shadow’s Chaos energies. So now they can feel what the other’s feeling. Whatever. If you care.

And now I dislike Jet the Hawk even more than I used to (he’s a mega douche in this fic. Seriously, fuck that guy. Never have I wanted so badly to commit war crimes against a bird).

And Sonic and Shadow start getting closer (I knew this would happen, I read the tags but MY HEART). And they start to flirt a lil’ bit (mostly Sonic but still). And at this point I’m so invested in this fic that I put it down for OVER A MONTH because if I look at it for too long I get so violently silly that the capillaries in my forehead start exploding. And when I finally pick it back up at 4 in the morning I’m crying all over again because I forgot that in this fic I’m watching Sonic and his friends (but mostly Sonic) go through all the stages of grief. And then Sonic and Shadow have intense say gex (nice).

And. Just. This fic. This is one of those fics that changes you as a human being, that make you see the whole world in a different light. Your entire worldview tilts on its axis and you emerge exactly the same as you were before and yet unfathomably different from who you’ve ever been.

And then you realize at 8:35 in the morning that one of the best pieces of literature you’ve even read is an angst-riddled hurt/comfort gay smut fic about two cartoon hedgehogs who probably have ADHD and autism. 69/10 I absolutely recommend (Rose Drops on Ao3 by Magicstorm101).

Listen I know this is going to get controversial but these are my favorite ships for each Doctor:

Nine/Rose or Nine/Rose/Jack (refer to my OT3 post about Nine x Rose x Jack or just...all of Nine and Rose's character development for Season 1 for reasons)

Ten/Martha (but like Season 4 Ten/Martha after they are on more equal footing/the Doctor has realized how he fucked up, they would have been legendary)

Eleven/Amy/Rory (in that sweet spot post-Season 5, pre-God-Complex)

Twelve/Missy (this is the one version of the Thoschei ship that could actually work out long term, and though I love the batshit deranged energy of TenSimm and SpyDoc, this is the variation I think complements each other best in not just their feral energy/foils to each other, but also in their genuine understanding of each other and devotion to each other)

Thirteen/Jack (I really want to say Thasmin but Thirteen/Jack fascinates me so much you have no idea, all of that history, all of that guilt and outsurviving everyone and understanding each other like no one else does...it's a ship that lives mostly on headcanon but hey, most Doctor ships live mostly on headcanon)

(And this isn't even getting into my non-canon ships for the magical universe where continuity between showrunners could have worked... R.I.P. to Eleven x Rose, Twelve x Martha, and Bill x Thirteen)

Constant Mongrel’s 2012 OOP debut "Everything Goes Wrong” is now up for free download on bandcamp right now. Only the finest labels got to work with this quartet, the likes of which included Wuss Tapes, Hidiotic, and of course my very own esteemed 80/81 Records. Don’t know how long I’ll keep it up for free, but it should be snatchable for a few weeks at least.

Recorded 2011 in Melbourne, Australia Released by 80/81 Records in the US. R.I.P Society got involved two months prior to the release and handled the Australian end of things. I'm grateful to Nic for finding the time and money to help, especially as he had a lot on his plate. He's certainly stuck by the band since, so kudos to him. But no, R.I.P. Society did not release this record in the United States, and it was originally going to be an 80/81 release exclusively. 500 copies pressed, sold out. R.I.P Society is welcome to team up with an American label to re-release it. Email them if you'd like to see that happen.

He Never Recovered From A 'Massive' Stroke’

Luke Perry -- the TV icon and heartthrob who rose to fame on "Beverly Hills, 90210" -- has died after suffering a massive stroke ... TMZ has learned.

Luke passed away Monday morning at St. Joseph's Hospital in Burbank. According to his rep, Luke was surrounded by his children Jack and Sophie, fiance Wendy Madison Bauer, ex-wife Minnie Sharp, mother Ann Bennett, step-father Steve Bennett, brother Tom Perry, sister Amy Coder, and other close family and friends.

As we first reported, he was rushed to the hospital last Wednesday morning after suffering the stroke while at his Sherman Oaks, CA home. According to the emergency dispatch audio -- obtained by TMZ -- paramedics received a call for a stroke at the residence. We're told when EMTs arrived, he was responsive and talking ... but his condition deteriorated.

R.I.P. Man Bun

So I wrote this imagine of the death of Kit’s man bun featuring myself as Richard Madden’s girlfriend (who also cuts hair). Please no hate mail -- I do love Kit’s hair. I can just imagine he’d be so ready to cut his hair once Game of Thrones is over. 

“This might be the bestest day of my life.”

Richard and Kit both laughed as Amy skipped through the flat.

“She might be the only person on Earth who is happy that Game of Thrones is over,” Kit said, wringing his hands. “I think I need a smoke.”

Richard nodded as his friend made his way to the balcony door. Amy continued setting her things up to her liking. Kit opened the door before pulling out a cigarette and lighting it.

“Do you want me to go first? Remind you that it doesn't hurt?” Richard asked, teasing his friend a bit.

“I know it doesn't bloody hurt,” Kit said, taking a long drag. “I just haven't made up my bloody mind, that's all.”

Amy froze, her face falling as she looked over at Kit. “You haven't? You mean you might not…”

“No, I'm going through with it,” Kit said, the smoke filtering out of his nose. “I just don't know what to do with it.”

Amy smiled gently at him. “It's a big step. Much bigger than last time.”

Kit nodded, taking another drag then slowly blowing the smoke out the door.

“I have some pictures on my phone. Might help you make up your mind,” she said.

Amy walked over and nudged Kit outside, sitting him in one of the chairs on the balcony. She smiled and winked at Richard before closing the door.

Richard smiled, watching his best friend and girlfriend through the window. Kit nodded as Amy sat down next to him. She pulled up some pictures and talked things over with him, his brow furrowing as he swiped through the images.

As excited as Richard knew Amy was to do this, he loved her for how patient she was being with Kit. He saw both of them nodding again, Kit stubbing out his cigarette in the ashtray.

They both stood and Kit opened the door and motioned for Amy to go first. He followed her over to the kitchen table, taking off his black denim jacket. Richard reached out and took it from Kit, draping it on the back of the couch.

“And? What did you decide?” Richard asked.

“You'll see,” Amy said, patting the kitchen chair. “We're kind of mixing a few ideas together.”

Kit slowly untucked his grey t-shirt and pulled it off, handing it to Richard as well. He looked over to see Amy staring at him. She wiped her lips which made Kit laugh.

“I am still in the room, you know,” Richard said.

“I'm just admiring this lovely piece of man flesh perfection,” Amy said with a dreamy smile.

Richard rolled his eyes making Amy laughed.

“You two could recreate season 1, episode 1 for me if you like,” she said, turning to the table as Kit sat down. “Is Alfie in town?”

“We nearly made ourselves sick doing sit ups before that scene,” Richard laughed.

“And tried to hold our breath when we didn't have lines,” Kit added chuckling.

Amy turned back, scissors flashing in her hand. Richard's eyes widened a bit when she stuck them into Kit’s hair. A second later, Kit’s hair fell loose around his shoulders, free from its restraint.

“Won't be needing that any time soon,” Amy said, combing her fingers through his hair to retrieve the band she had just cut.

“Shear him good, Tommy. He's never met a girl he liked better than his own hair,” Richard laughed, leaning on the back of the couch.

Kit half-smiled as Amy started sectioning his hair and clipping it on top of his head.

“As much as I would love to do that, I fear I might scare poor Kit here by recreating that part of the scene,” she said.

“Might actually help,” Kit sighed. “I couldn't back out then.”

He felt Amy pull on a section of hair at the crown of his head and then release it.

“Like that?” she said, tapping his shoulder.

He looked over and saw she held the section of hair in her hand. Richard started laughing at his poor friend.

“Aye. Like that,” Kit whispered, eyes wide. “Shit, Amy.”

She laughed as he took the hair from her hand. Richard grabbed it from Kit, draping it on his upper lip and making a ridiculously long mustache with it, making Kit laugh.

“Are you ready?” Amy asked. “We both know a lot more hair is joining that piece.”

“Aye,” Kit whispered. “Let's get on with it.No turning back now.”

Amy bit her lip as she tilted Kit’s head towards his chest. She placed the scissors at his hairline and slowly began cutting straight across, long dark brown curls tumbling to the floor. She then started cutting scissors over comb up the back of his head. Richard's eyes widened a bit as he watched his girlfriend work. He expected Kit to want to cut his hair after Thrones was over, just not quite this short. Kit glanced up at Richard, noticing the surprise and concern on his friend's face.

“I’m done with it. I want to be able to go out to a pub and maybe not be recognized for the first time in 10 years,” Kit said. “I didn't have that luxury like you did. I was in character all the time.”

“Besides, it’s just hair,” Amy said, straightening up Kit’s head. “It'll grow back.”

She came around to his left side, combed up the long hair there and snipped it off. The piece landed in Kit’s lap. He picked it up, straightening it out to its full length and smirked. Amy moved to his other side, cutting the other side to roughly the same length. She then set down her scissors, picking up her spray bottle. She watched the goose bumps pop up on Kit’s back as she sprayed the back and sides with water.

“Shit, that's cold,” Kit whispered as he shivered, making Richard laugh.

“Okay, close your eyes,” Amy said, taking Kit by the hand. “Keep them closed.”

Richard smiled as she led Kit into the bathroom. He followed behind, leaning in the doorway as Amy positioned Kit in front of the mirror. He readied his phone to take pictures of Kit’s reaction. Amy reached up, adjusting a few pieces of hair before stepping back.

“Okay,” she whispered. “You can open them.”

Kit blinked a couple times before leaning into the mirror. His eyes grew wide as his right hand slowly reached up to touch his hair. His chocolate curls framed his face, maybe two inches in length on top and half an inch on the back and sides. His fingers raked back through his hair as he turned his head back and forth.

“Bloody hell,” he whispered.

He started when Amy tapped his arm. She gave him a hand mirror.

“So you can see the back,” she said hopefully.

He turned himself around, angling the mirror so he could inspect Amy's work. Amy bit her lip as she watched him, fingers running across the back of his head.

“Bloody hell,” he whispered, turning to face the mirror again.

His face slowly broke into a grin as his hands kept running through his hair. He turned, picking Amy up in a bear hug.

“Thank you!” he said, giving her a big kiss on the lips.

“Careful now,” Richard warned playfully. “That's my girl.”

“And thank you for dating her!” Kit said, coming over and kissing Richard on the lips.

Kit turned back to the mirror as Amy laughed at him. Richard turned when he heard the buzzer to the street door. He slipped out of the bathroom unnoticed. Kit stared at himself, moving his hair this way and that, curling it around his fingers.

“Do you think we could maybe take it a bit shorter?” he asked, turning when he saw Richard was no longer alone, his girlfriend also standing in the doorway.

Rose’s blue eyes were as big as saucers, her mouth forming a small O. Kit smiled broadly at her.

“Hi!” he said, walking over and kissing her.

“I… Richard… text…  haircut... Kit… short!” she stuttered. “So short!”

Her fingers reached up to touch his hair, but froze less than an inch from his hair. He laughed and tilted his head to meet her hand.

“Isn’t it awesome?” he asked. “I can’t wait to shock everyone at the wrap party tonight.”

He frowned when her fingers didn’t move. His hand reached up to meet hers.

“Rose?” Amy asked. “Are you…”

Rose shook her head to clear it, a single tear falling down her cheek. Kit took her hand from his hair and held it to his chest. She reached up with her free hand, brushing back the curls off his forehead.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked him.

“I wanted to surprise you,” he said, searching her eyes.

“Aye. You did a good job of that.” She took a deep breath, meeting his eyes. A smile slowly spread on her face. “I won’t lie, I’ll miss the man bun,” she whispered. “But maybe only a little. Have your eyes always been so… so…”

Kit smiled at her, leaning in for another kiss. Amy slid herself around the couple to Richard's side. Rose’s fingers worked their way through Kit’s hair as they continued to kiss. Richard looked down at Amy and winked at her, pulling her from the bathroom door out into the flat.

“Thank you, “ he said, leaning on the back of the couch.

He pulled her in between his legs, arms wrapping around her waist. He drew her in for a long deep kiss.

“For what?” she whispered, leaning her forehead against his.

“For being so good to my friends. For being so patient with Kit earlier,” he said.

“You're quite welcome,” she said, kissing him again. “But I've also come to see your friends as my own. There's no way I would've pressured Kit into something he wasn't ready for.”

She turned when Kit cleared his throat. Richard chuckled at the way Kit’s short curls sprang from his head at different angles.

“So, as I was saying before Rose got here,” Kit said. “Could we maybe take the sides and back a bit shorter? But just the bottom part? Not all over. I don't know if I'm explaining that right.”

“I believe what my friend is trying to say is that he'd like you to taper his hair,” Richard said.

“I know that,” Amy said pinching Richard's arm. “And yes, we can.”

Kit smiled at Rose, squeezing her hand before going and sitting in the kitchen chair again. Rose slid in next to Richard leaning on the back of the couch. Richard gave her shoulders a squeeze.

“Thank you for texting me,” she whispered. “I had no idea this is what he was planning when he came over here.”

“Neither did he,” Richard chuckled. “I think all he knew was that it had to come off today.”

“Whoa, what is that?” Kit said, jumping from the chair. “What are those?”

Amy laughed as she turned off her buzzers. She patted the chair, Kit staring at her warily.

“They're clippers, love,” Rose said.

“You didn't use those earlier,” he said, slowly sitting down.

“No, I didn't, but I'm using them now,” Amy said. “Babe, come here,” she said to Richard.

“What for?” he asked getting up from the back of the couch.

“Demo purposes,” she said.

He stepped over beside Kit and turned around. Amy pushed on his shoulder until he was squatting in front of her. She flipped on the buzzers.

“They're just like what you'd use to trim your beard,” she explained to Kit.

She pushed Richard’s head forward, slowly running the buzzers up the back of his head. Kit watched as a small path of shorter hair appeared where Amy cut.

“They don't hurt. They're just a bit more efficient,” Amy said turning them off. “Especially for tapering. Thank you honey.”

“Wait, how short did you just cut my hair?” Richard asked, reaching up to feel the back of his head.

“They're all a bunch of big babies,” Rose said, smirking.

“4-year-olds who shave,” Amy chuckled.

Richard sighed, standing from his crouch, still trying to inspect the back of his head with his fingers.

“And if you don't stop pouting, I'll make sure it's extra short when I finish,” Amy said, flicking on the clippers again.

Richard leaned on the couch again next to Rose. Amy took her comb and started tapering Kit’s hair.

“I thought maybe you could start the reverse mohawk trend,” she said bumping shoulders with Richard.

“Only if you try it with me,” Richard laughed.

“So Rose, how much do you think we could make if we bagged up Kit’s hair and tried to sell it?” Amy asked as she worked.

“Good question. Do we have provenance?” Rose laughed.

“Richard took pictures.”

“We might be able to make a good chunk of change. Start a “You Know Nothing, Jon Snow” scholarship fund,” Rose giggled.

“Ha, ha, ha,” Kit said. “Very funny.”

All 4 of them laughed. Amy turned off the clippers, taking a towel and brushing off Kit’s neck.

“Go take a look,” she said.

Rose followed Kit into the bathroom, watching him turn his head back and forth, brushing his fingers over his hair.

“You know,” she said quietly, “I’m beginning to like this look. I might not let you grow out your hair ever again.”

Richard walked over to Amy, sitting in the chair after she pulled off his t-shirt.

“Remind me not to be your guinea pig again,” he said.

“Hush,” Amy said, turning on the clippers again. “You know I wouldn't leave you like that.”

“But it feels like you went really short,” he sighed.

“It's just hair,” Kit laughed as he came out of the bathroom. “It'll grow back.”

“You might've created a monster,” Rose told Amy.

Kit grabbed his shirt off the back of the couch, slipping it over his head. Rose picked up his jacket, draping it over her arm.

“We'll see you tonight then?” Kit asked.

“Yes,” Richard said with his head bent to his chest.

Kit walked over, kissing Amy's cheek. He winked at her as he bumped her arm, making the clippers go another inch higher.

“Hey!” Richard said, hands flying to try and check the damage but being batted away by Amy.

“Oops,” Kit laughed, taking Rose’s hand as they walked to the door.

“I'm going to make a rope out of his hair and strangle him with it,” Richard muttered.

The Week in Tech: Navigating the Chinese Minefield

Each week, we review the week’s news, offering analysis about the most important developments in the tech industry.

Hello, Bits readers, I’m Erin Griffith, a tech reporter filling in from New York. Here’s what happened this past week in tech:

The Chinese government has increased pressure on foreign companies that don’t toe the party line on protests in Hong Kong. That has created a minefield for American companies, Amy Qin and Julie Creswell wrote. First, the National Basketball Association apologized to China after a team executive tweeted support for the Hong Kong protesters. Despite the apology, some Chinese sponsorships, broadcasts and preseason games were canceled.

Then Activision Blizzard, the gaming company, suspended a professional e-sports player for voicing his support for the protesters, saying it damaged the company’s image. The move prompted a vigorous backlash from fans and lawmakers. And a group of Blizzard employees staged a walkout to protest the company’s move.

Chinese media also attacked Apple for approving an app that lets Hong Kong protesters track police officers, leading to calls for a boycott of its products in China. On Wednesday night, Apple said it was withdrawing the app, HKmap.live, from its App Store just days after approving it because the authorities in Hong Kong said protesters were using it to attack the police.

That’s all in just one week. Nike, Tiffany, Riot Games, Marriott, Zara, Delta and many others have also complied with China’s requests.

I should note that one American group was defiant. The television show “South Park” issued a searing mock apology last Monday after it was banned from the country: “Like the N.B.A., we welcome the Chinese censors into our homes and into our hearts. We too love money more than freedom and democracy.” Ouch.

The escalation is set to the backdrop of an increasingly tense trade war. Writing for Opinion, Farhad Manjoo argued in a column that dealing with China wasn’t worth the moral cost.

Facebook’s political ad conundrum

Facebook’s decision to not ban ads that spread political lies set off a fiery debate about whether the social media giant is shirking its democratic responsibilities.

The company gave the O.K. to an ad from the Trump campaign that falsely claimed former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. offered Ukraine $1 billion in aid if the country pushed out the man investigating a company tied to Mr. Biden’s son.

Cecilia Kang wrote that Facebook’s decision, which was criticized in many circles, was further evidence that the company did not want to weigh in on political fights that would make it look like it was siding with one party.

Facebook isn’t the only company to agree to run the ad. Twitter and YouTube also said it did not violate their policies.

Some observers supported the move, arguing that making political ads available to public dissection was more democratic than censorship. But others said it was “empowering propaganda,” a craven play for ad dollars, bad for democracy and “toxic.” Some called for regulation, and others pointed out contradictions in Facebook’s policies. Chris Hughes, Facebook’s co-founder, said the policy was the equivalent of siding with President Trump.

People haven’t been willing to give Facebook the benefit of the doubt for years now. That doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon.

Start-up change of heart

In light of weak receptions for the initial public offerings of the highest-profile start-ups this year, a new gospel is spreading among Silicon Valley start-ups: Profits are cool!

In a novel shift, venture capitalists and start-ups are beginning to focus more on business fundamentals over cash-burning, top-line growth. It’s especially true for companies with untested business models, including gig economy start-ups or those disrupting old-line industries like real estate, orthodontics and exercise bikes.

If this feels a bit familiar, it’s because start-ups have undergone a “pivot to profit” moment every few years for more than a decade. In 2014, there were predictions of “dead unicorns” and markdowns from mutual fund investors. In 2016, venture investors warned start-ups to raise money before the market closed. And most famously, in 2008, Sequoia Capital presented a dire slide deck, titled “R.I.P. Good Times,” designed to scare founders into preparing for the recession.

But despite a few blips along the way, things have gotten only bigger and more bubbly in the enchanted forest of start-up unicorns. Even the recession of 2008 didn’t hit the tech industry that hard. Will this moment of austerity last? Investors are hopeful. But if recent history is a guide, I’m not holding my breath.

Rip Torn, the versatile actor with more than 200 credits to his name, died peacefully in his home on July 9th, 2019. He was 88 years old. After making his film debut in 1956, Torn enjoyed a diverse and illustrious career in such films as The Man Who Fell To Earth with David Bowie, Men In Black with Will Smith, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and Albert Brooks’ Defending Your Life.

Torn is perhaps best known for his brilliant turn as talk show producer Artie in HBO’s The Larry Sanders Show. During the show’s six-year run between 1992 and 1998, Torn earned six straight Emmy nominations for Best Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series, with a win in 1996.

Off-screen, Torn had a wild life marked with erratic behavior that would sound made up if it wasn’t true. He struck author Norman Mailer with a hammer while making the 1970 film Maidstone, which lead to an actual fight between the two that made it into the final film.

During a 1994 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, actor Dennis Hopper accused Torn of pulling a knife on him during pre-production on Easy Rider, leading Torn to be replaced by Jack Nicholson. Torn sued for defamation and won more than $900,000 in punitive and damages. In 2010, Torn was arrested for breaking into a bank in Lakeville, Connecticut that Torn mistook for his house.

As news of Torn’s death became public, the actor’s friends, former colleagues and admirers paid tribute on Twitter. Actor and filmmaker Albert Brooks tweeted,

“R.I.P Rip Torn. He was so great in Defending Your Life. I’ll miss you Rip, you were a true original.”

Actor and director Seth Rogen also had some kind words to say about Torn’s role in the comedy classic, tweeting,

“Rip Torn was incredible. His work on The Larry Sanders Show was hysterical but nothing is better than the way he says ‘Big Bear’ in Defending Your Life. I still laugh just thinking about it.”

Phantasm and Beastmaster filmmaker Don Coscarelli tweeted,

“As a young filmmaker I was blown away by Rip Torn’s performance in PAYDAY. We became friends working together on THE BEASTMASTER. I’ll always look back fondly on meeting up at his little crash pad for lunches in Malibu- and the great Hollywood stories he’d tell. RIP dear friend.”

Actor Griffin Newman reminded his followers about Torn’s groundbreaking TV comedy work, tweeting,

“Rip Torn was one of those people who just became electric on camera. Anyone who hasn’t seen THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW should correct that immediately. It’s on HBOGo. His performance helped ‘legitimize’ TV at a time when it was still (falsely) considered a lesser medium for actors.”

Comedian and Freddy Got Fingered co-star, Tom Green, tweeted,

“Just heard the sad news that the great Rip Torn has passed away. Rip was a class act. He was an incredible actor. One of the greats. A true legend. I am proud to have worked with him and to have known him. Rest in peace Rip.”

Ashley Clark, senior programmer for BAM Film wrote,

“Oh no, RIP Rip Torn, the only man whose surname – as a friend once pointed out – represents the consequence of having performed the action indicated by his first name. So great, and so unsettling, in so many films, particularly The Man Who Fell To Earth!”

Men in Black co-star Vincent D’Onofrio reminisced about time spent with Rip and his first wife, Ann, tweeting, in part,

“Our younger generation of actors may not know of Rip or Ann but they should. Rip as unique an actor as any1 could ever hope 2b.”

Torn leaves behind his wife, actress Amy Wright, six children, and four grandchildren.
